It isn't made clear if he is ice climbing, he is referred to as a hiker, but was wearing crampons when he fell.

OK, I found a text article, at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27318016/ It was on Mount Adams in Washington State. Described as an "experienced climber", he had scaled 11,000 feet when he turned around due to weather, then at some point slipped on ice and fell 1,000 feet, injuring his ankle. |

wicked... So, didn't tell anyone of his plans? Slipped on snow? Hadn't checked the weather report? Just saying. |

I am a member of the Mountain Rescue Unit dispatched to look for this man. While not an experienced climber, he is young, brute tough, and lucky up until the events that occured on Mount Adams. This is a prime example of the "Fast and Light" approach being taken up by those without the experience to get away with it. This man is in a world of hurt right now, and will likely be suffering for the next few months. Wicked... No. Credit owed to Derek for staying alive, but with a bit more knowledge and the bare essentials, he could have stayed out of the papers. |

By yourself with skills and abilities and a positive mental attitude = solitude and serenity not stupid at all in my book |
