DiGiulian and and Marin Redpoint multi-pitch 5.14 in Sardinia
by Paul unknown
Sasha DiGuilian and Spaniard Edu Marin successfully redpointed every pitch of the 1,000 foot route Viaje de los Locos (Voyage of the Crazy), a 5.14a in the granite paradise of the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, off the coast of Italy. Although the route was established a dozen years ago by rock superstars Daniel Dulac and Dani Andrada, DiGuilian and Marin's Oct. 9 send is only the second ascent of the route.
As most American climbers know, DiGiulian easily holds the title of "America's best female sport climber," and is one of a handful of women in the world to have climbed 5.14d (9a), having sent the grade both at the Red River Gorge, and in Spain. However, she has also sent some amazingly hard multi-pitch routes, including an onsight of Camillotto Pellissier (5.13c) and a send of Bellavista (5.14a), both in Italy's Dolomites. This summer, DiGiulian had her sights set on the multi-pitch 5.14 Orbayu in Spain, but decided to hold off on it after a controversial dispute about "professional climbers' rights" with Nina Caprez and Cedric Lachat, who wished to climb and film the route during the same time.
Marin has been DiGiulian's partner for many of her bigger endeavors, and is an amazing sport climber himself, with ascents into the 5.15 range. Congrats to both climbers for sending this amazing route!
