The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that sport climbing is on it's 8 item shortlist of sports that will be considered for inclusion in the 2020 Olympic Games.

The final decision on which sport will be included in the 2020 Olympics will be announced by the IOC in 2013, in Buenos Aires.

The original list comprised of 12 sports that were to be considered. This list has now been shortened to 8, which include: Wushu, karate, roller sports, softball, baseball, squash, wakeboarding and lastly sport climbing. The four that were dropped off the list were netball, bowling, surfing and dancing. Currently the thought is that the favour would lie with baseball or softball, sports which were also considered for the 2008 Olympic Games.

The decision was welcomed by the IFSC President Marco Maria Scolaris who spoke about the success and growth in sport climbing over the past 4 years and how he looked forward to the direction in which the sport was heading.
Should sport climbing find its way into the Olympic schedule it will no doubt bring in a new dynamic to the sport.

My vote is for baseball. Wushu looks dorky as hell, karate is panzyland compared to the martial arts they already have, softball is baseball but without the pitcher getting to pelt the batter once in a while, I guess wakeboarding is neat to watch, but climbing is boring as hell. Squash is in a close second, mostly due to it's massive WTF bonus.

5 out of 5 stars Having been (briefly) a member of the USA Climbing comittee to gain inclusion of competition climbing in the Olympics, I say, "It's about time." The sport doesn't have to be flashy to watch to represent the excellence of human competition, and climbing is one of the oldest, most pure forms of human endeavor, modern rules necessary for competition not withstanding.

Speaking of sports that are boring as hell to watch, enter baseball. No amount of hot dogs, cotton candy, peanuts, and even beer can make baseball entertaining. My question, however, is how on earth is Curling an Olympic sport while some of these others are not? If Curling is in, so should shuffle board, yard darts, and washers.

Climbing is one of the most physically demanding sports around. I think it should definitely be included.

Rock Climbing demonstrates true athletic ability and should be included in the Olympics. It is amazing what the climbers can do and I am sure the waiting public would appreciate the talent.
