However, I feel like even asking if they want help can appear to be presumptuous. No matter how you phrase it. It sounds like you are saying "Hey, you aren't going to figure that problem out on your own so let me show you how". I figure that if someone is too proud or determined to ask for help then being humbled by trying to figure out that tricky V1 might actually be good for them.
