Since my car is not terribly reliable this season, I am trying to hook up with anyone else who is going to DL via I-90... Most people out of the city or my area (NW suburbs) take this route of course. My car is always reliable enough to get me to a pickup point just off of 90. So it won't be any extra time on your trip. I am a very outgoing and positive character. I have a rack big enough to set up most top ropes at DL. It's a very unused rack however because I normally submit to the Seniority of my more experienced climbing buddies. I have climbed with Wildtrail, Tim Greene and Tom (I'm not sure his screen name but he lives in Algonquin). Anyways just a few references from the site if your uneasy. Please let me know if you have any questions or good news   ! :!: Also please do post any plans to go to DL even if I am not available to go. Let this serve as a place for people in the area to meet new climbing buddies, save gas and money and just climb more! My cell: 630-417-4633 Email:aaronkeup@comcast.net

Weather permitting, I'll be heading up to the Lake this Wednesday, May 18th. Some buddies and I are going, and I'm not sure yet whether or not we'll have room in the car(s). I'll give you a call once I know more!

i've been hitting dl every other weekend this year so far. im going to head up there this weekend and will have room for at least one more. i live in westmont/downers grove area and wouldn't mind taking someone else along (the more the merrier :D ). im probably going to be driving in the morning and coming home that night either sat. or sun. dont really care which day (whatever works) let me know if you want a lift. by the way i have everything to set upat least one rope (maybe 2 if i get a chance to head to rei for some more beaners).

duality, because DL is granite, the climbs that are rated 5.8 or 5.9 could be considered 5.10s elsewhere. If you've climbed other areas, you'll notice how much easier it is to toe-in or get grip at RedRocks, etc. compared to DL, especially when its humid and the granite is sweating.

Ok... thanks for the clarification. I always thought DL was quartzite... anyways, I can TR 5.10 in gym so i dont know 5.7 lead, 5.8 follow then? How does the friction compare to Mississippi Palisades?

Not sure about the MS Palisades, never been there actually. Though its about comparable to Red Wing, MN though a different rock entirely, its pretty slick on some routes. There was a sport climb that was a 5.9 or 5.10 and I thought it should be an 11 based on the crux. Anyway, I was just saying that the route difficulties are relative, really. Anyway, hope to get some climbing in this weekend at DL - weather is looking decent. Will probably stay over at my buddies house in Baraboo and kong some routes early AM before anyone else shows up. Great AM climbing when the sun is just coming up and no one is there yet. You can hear people talking down at the lake its so quiet...

DL is quartzite check this out
In reply to: You are standing at the top of a mile-thick layer of quartzite. This tilted layer plunges deep below the town of Baraboo, Wisconsin, curves back to the surface, and re-emerges a few miles north of Baraboo. If you could pull the quartzite layer out of the ground, you would see that it is bent downward into a giant fold, just like a buckled piece of paper but immensely larger and thicker. The quartzite was crumpled into this shape by colliding continents 1.5 billion years ago. and Adi, I think I am going to be up there on Sunday, I am planning on meeting Ian and David from MNC.com there. I think you met both of them at the DL gatering this fall. PM me if you don't have my number anymore and Ill get it to you. I may be up for some bouldering around the lake on sat. if think you can go sat but not sun. Give me a call and we will work things out Andy

no it's a statue under a roof. the roof is hold up by three pillars that have rock edges. I am probablay doing it around 12 on thursday, not definite yet. it's possible to make at this 6 routes with a top out. Very easy for people who have strenght to brap a flat ledg of concrete and able to pull themselves over, for me there will be some difficulty.

apparently near providence high school in new lenox (I-80 and RT 30), there is a little structure to climb. i would love that just don't get frustrated with me. i promise i'll give it everything i have. i would erally love to learn from a more experienced climber. and one thing i've noticed is that the climbing community is very strong and close-knit. not all friends, but at least willing to help each other out. so, i will definitely go there. hopefully by late june i'll be leading and at a solid 5.10 range.

Just to make sure you guys weren’t misinformed, when leading at DL you are leading on gear. There is NO sport climbing at DL. I'm not trying to come across like an ass, but a lot of people are surprised of that fact when they show up. Adi, my plans might change but I don't think Ill be able to make it on Monday.

Jun 25 weekend looks fine. There are all sorts of climbing there. I have been there just once, but mostly top roping. There are some trad routes where you can practice your lead skills, but you would want to get some gym exp before u head out there, for lead. Adi

In reply to: what kind of climbing is there for noobs? i hope to be educated in the world of lead by then, just so i can practice...would that be a good place? As I stated before, DL is all Top rope, Trad (or really short AID I guess) and bouldering. IF you are starting to get into Trad leading make sure you have someone qualified to teach you, the quartzite there isnt very forgiving for new trad leaders. Just dont want to see anyone get hurt. And Trad leading is a totally diferent mental game than (gym) sport leading, not sure gym leading will help that much for the mental aspect of it, but it will for the physical aspect. Andy Edit: spelling

Devils Lake has plenty of easy lines for a new trad leader - queens throne is a 5.4 and that is great for a first lead. Most placements are with your feet stemmed on ledges, making for many 2 handed placements, and it protects often and easily. IMO, leading in a gym won't help you leading outside at devils lake. For one, it's all on gear. Second, you will be doing something real easy, RIGHT? If it's that easy, you will have no problem correctng a back clip. The idea behind your handful of first leads, is just to get the feel for it - its not about pushing your abilities or anything.. I never led anything indoors before outdoors - I have struggled with a few clips getting the hang of it, and I may have done some backclips, but the more experienced person with me corrected me on that. Once you are pretty good at sizing up pro from practicing with top rope setups, get on the sharp end and have fun :)

there is NO sport climbing at devils lake - top rope and leading with gear only. There may be a couple fixed pitons here and there you can clip too, thats kinda sporty  Better off going to jackson falls for sport leading, really nice place too, great sandstone.

In reply to: there is NO sport climbing at devils lake - top rope and leading with gear only. True. They don't want bolts in the rock. I don't blame em. It ruins the look and the rock. Secondly, they have been attempting to ban climbing there for a few years now, so don't do anything to give the authorities more ammunition. As it goes, they think climbers trasht he place with food wrappers, etc. when it is really hikers and families with small children> Every climber I've ever seen at DL, and I've been there a lot, takes more off the rock than they bring with them.

i certainly dont mind it...if you arent exaggerating thatd be great to see some decent climbers 7 years younger than me...but if you're too good...i may drown you.

If any of you will be there it would be great to meet you and climb. Let me know. Ages from 19 to 26 3 noob climbers and 2 non ie. hikers, moral supportists and photographers. thanks guys and gals s.

I may have to bail on the 25th. I'm guiding a camp at Palisades that weekend. Also, Danegerous - how is the clothing company coming along?

The nice thing about DL is you really don't need much to climb 85% of the climbs if you're top roping. You just need to know what to use where. Some long webbing - about 8 pieces (1-40ft, 2-30ft, 2-15ft, 3-10ft) to get around any large boulder or nearby tree, some nuts (get a set) and a couple cams (one large, one med) and you're pretty much good. You should be able to set any rope with that. Of course you need some locking biners to double up at the anchors and rope, as well.

Ya'll should come on down to Southern Illinois, I have plenty of gear and can teach ya' to lead sport or trad if you want!!! There are 5.6 and 5.7 sport routes down here for the n00bs. Only about a 5.5 hour drive and camping is free!!!

In reply to: a couple cams (one large, one med) and you're pretty much good. Just thought of something, you could just get another long 40ft piece of webbing instead of the cam to sling a far tree, that would be cheaper than the cam. All in all not much is needed to set three good anchors at a lot of the climbs. Hopefully you guys will have a great weekend like we just did. Low traffic, uncrowded. If there's no wind and I can't kiteboard this weekend, maybe I'll cruise up and do some climbing too.
