OK so I see planning starting for the PA Gunks gathering and while summer is just underway, why not plan for the fall? So my question is aimed firstly at the Conley family then at previous Rumney attendees. Jules, will Pa be looking to fill the cottage with dirty smelly hungry climbers for the Cdn Thanksgiving/US Columbus Day weekend? The dates would be 8th to 10th October. If so you'd better bloody be there..... K? Oh and Jules, I already did the hard part, came up with a different way to number it - get it...... RU-4 it  For anyone that usually flies in, consider that the weekend after is the PA gunks gathering. Not too shabby for a weeks vacation idea.

In reply to: If the Sra is back in time, I think we might finally be able to make it back to Pa's place. Hope you are still doing good Darkside.... -DD- DD - or should I call you Mr Moose  what a pleasant surprise. After your world tripping I'm glad to have some contact with you again. I certainly hope this year works out and we get to meet up again. Remember that wet afternoon many moons ago when a few of us headed off to the bar......... and we ALL laughed. How terribly delightful to hear Sra's uncontrollable laughter. It would be nice to have a few long distance birds fly in again but there were some good folks at the table with us that day eh? We've been keeping up in your absence and I'm sure I can cook up a little bacon or veggie eggs and stove toast for you both, erm and the other 20 or 30 hungry souls that seem to turn up each year. Needless to say that I'm doing well enough and I look forward to seeing your ugly mug again if you can make it.

Sorry guys. I probably won't be able to make it home for the weekend (money and bad timing-- right in the middle of midterms.) My dad's presence in the state that weekend is dependent on mine, so if I'm not there, he's not. If anything changes last minute, festivities could be moved to our place, but for now I've got to say no. :(

I'm in 2! I may just have a camping area up my sleeve that will be more then enough room for everyone. No lake, but a lot of room, music, bon-fire (if allowed), about 15 minutes from Rumney and about 10 minutes to the store. It's a couple of fields (1 mowed - 1 not) on a 30 acre lot on Canaan/Dorchester line. I need to ask if I can use it again. Shouldn't be a problem ... Any other ideas? Alan edited to include that there is a lake within a 15/20 minute ride.

The owners have given me permission to use their "back yard" and understand how a bunch of low-down dirtbaggin climbas act and have no issue with it at all. Yup, there can be laughter into the night, bone fire roaring in the twilight and music keeping the beat for those who can't resist the urge to shake it up a bit! This can be fun ... Before I get too far into the process, I need to know if this is what we want. Are we tough enough to stand the morning chill of camping in October? Does it matter if the only way to become clean is in the chilly waters of a nearby lake? As far as cooking goes, I can get a couple of large 55 gallon setups for those who fancy a big meal. Oh yea ... port-a-potties! Post up so I can get an idea if this is how we are going to do this or not. hj

In reply to: Any suggestion to make this a memoriable experience are welcome. FYI ... the owners are excited to have you all, so pass the word to other climbers. hj My preference on these types is KISS. The Conleys have always been incredibly generous with food etc but I think the best bet is the "Here's the spot, fend for yourself" mentality. Then if group meals or feasts materialize it's a bonus. You know your friends, what gift or donation would be appropriate for their hospitality? $10-$20 a person? And definitely porta pottiy (ies). Oh, while you're mowing... My tent is big. 8x8 or so. so clear me a good spot.

As far as cooking goes, I can get 2 55 gallon drum grills. You can bring your own cooking gear if you want, but there will be enough room for a feast to be cooked. I didn't consider the Conley's feasts that they were famous for ... any ideas on that? Never thought of donations either. Guess you can donate when you get there, if you want. I'll crop my pictures of the area so they can be posted for this event. This way, everyone can get an idea of the layout. Since my son does music, I'm sure I can get him to DJ for Saturday night. Bring your cd's and the rest is taken care of. As far as renaming this post ... never done it and not sure I could if I wanted to. We could follow that historical way and call it Rumney Gathering IV? Thoughts? hj

I like the idea of donations. That should cover the porto-potties, necessities, and be a good surprise for our hosts. I think the person who started the post is going to have to be the one changing the title of the thread, or would a mod have to do it? Dan

I just submitted 4 pictures of the camping area so you can have an idea as to the size. When they get approved, I'll post them. Just talked to the owners and they'll be gone until Saturday night, but I'll still be there Friday around 6 pm for those of us who want to start the weekend early. I'll post the directions when I post the pictures. Should be quite a show, them comming back from a buisness trip to see a herd of drunken climbers, some dancing around the campfire, others slacklining (if someone wants to set one up) and the rest just howling at the moon! In reply to: In reply to: Grant, let me know if you want it changed back. I just think we'll see more action of our targeted audience this way. MOD ABUSE! ;) - d. OH.... OH... ouch. I feel so abused and dirty. So what happened here? Jules bailed and Team Grant disbanded, now I see some sort of drunken debauchery being planned for some isolated field. It's almost like escapees from the coffee shop want to get together and make a dome chair  To be honest I haven't logged into RC.com in a week or two and thought RU-4 wasn't going to happen this year. Ideas of a fall visit to the Red had developed. Now I don't know what I'll do. Maybe I will still head to the Red but if I opt for RU-4 and have to sleep in a field then I'll probably be nesh and crawl out of my sleeping bag late when it's warmer. With no cast iron wood stove for heat or cooking, the Darkside Cafe may not be serving as much bacon. :?

I've always been too far away to get to rumney gatherings.... I'm going to do my best to make it up since rumney is all of about 3 hours from me now that I'm a New Englander again, I can't really say no..... but I was making plans to head to DC and visit pals that weekend. With the gas prices the 3 hours will beat out the 7 hours any day, so I'm a definate maybe :) I'll know better as time draws closer, but am all for the field, and making a donation to said field owners. :D

Tai, no. I still have it but may save it for a trip next year when my skills are not so weak. Wasting a trip to the Gunks now seems wasteful, having only climbed 4 days ALL season.

Chad, I'm very disappointed you won't be at either of these. I was looking forward to meeting you and climbing with you. I was looking forward to getting 1/4 of a ton on the same rope with 2 guys. Guess now I'll have to climb with Abi and Kimmy. Won't be any records set in that group, unless it's the amount of time it takes me to belay them. Remember the gunks is closer to you than me. Maybe next year, but I hope to loose some weight. I climb almost every week sometimes 3 days in a week, and I'm no better than I was three years ago.

OK, as I just told Tai in a PM I'm gonna try real hard for the Gunks. The deal breaker will be if I don't have my downstairs apartment rented by then, or at least under agreement. If it's still empty then, then I'll have to spend that weekend showing it. Gunks WOULD be fun....

Been battling the size police with my pics of the campground. Finally got them down to under 48K and will post them as soon as they give the OK. I agree that it'll be different with Jules not there, but lets not let the spirit of these Rumney Gatherings dwindle to nothing ... it can still be a great time. It's up to us to keep it going, and I don't think Jules would like it if we let the fire go out while she was away. Keep in mind that this is not to replace her gatherings, just a different place for this year. Alan

Just a little over a month to go! Since this thread has been in moth-balls for awhile, I thought I'd pop it up on the front page to try and spark interest once again. If you are still planning on comming, I'd appreciate a PM. This way, I can ensure that I get everything necessary and enough of it. Thanks, Alan

BUMP....is anyone going up to this from the PA area? I need a ride up for me and my gear, but don't need one back down. Even if you are passing through on the way from further south or if I can meet you in NJ/NY somewhere (preferably if it's not too far out of the way of my drive from the Gunks down 87/287 as that will be the way I'm coming home) please PM me! Will gladly supply some gas money and refreshing beverages for your troubles! Thx! K.

You are more then welcome to park yourself as long as you wish. The last couple of times I was at the Rumney Gathering, there was a group of climbers heading to Cannon Mtn for a days climbing and then returned. Who knows ... may happen again for those who would like to climb multipitched trad. If all goes well, I'll be at the Gunks PA Gathering myself! Have to see how this weekend goes first. Jammer

A friend of mine wants to head down to Rumney and I have a project or two that needs sending, so I'll be down either the weekend before the gathering or the weekend of. Most likely I'll be down for the gathering given that it's Thanksgiving long weekend and I don't think I'll have much in the way of work. Maybe I'll see y'all down there... although you might not notice anyway since I'm pretty quiet and reserved.

5.8 barefoot Rumney slabs? I never make the same mistake twi... er, four times. I have my eyes on Stormtrooper (I think that's what it's called). Definitely not slab and given that I got beat down somewhere in the middle, probably not an 8.

Sounds like a good weekend. I just need to know where at Rumney, like which cliff, or whatever (I've never been, forgive me). Also, what the hostel situation is, and last but not least, how long it takes to get there from Ottawa, or Toronto or Montreal (if have info on either one, it's fine. I just need a rough estimate). Peace Ryan

I've driven from Ottawa and from Toronto, and Ottawa was a much shorter drive. I think from Ottawa it was eight hours, but I'm not entirely sure. It'd definitely be longer to go through Toronto if you're heading from Kingston. As for what cliff... everyone will most likely congregate at the campground right at the crag (I believe directions and such are listed in this thread and in the Rumney section in the routes DB), and then disperse from there. I think it's $7 a night, but you don't have to pay for parking since you can walk to the climbs from camp.

Ryan.. there are many different cliffs at Rumney but there will be people scattered among probably most of them so basically you can find people that are interested in the same routes or areas and go with them.. or whatever http://www.rockclimbing.com/routes/listArea.php?AreaID=576 the route data base is pretty up to date with most of the walls basically people either meet at where we are staying or in the parking lot and decide where to go hostel situation looks like mostly camping in a field at Jammer's friends house. look through the thread for more info on that and pictures

The campings free at Colleens and it's only a 15 to 20 minute ride from the cliffs. I'll be there from Firday night to Monday morning and it's open to everyone that wants to climb. edited to add ... kim, you're correct. They are two different places.

Looks like there may be a small crew going there (though it was going to be independently, only just saw this thread) from Niagara Region. Two are taking the week off after Thanksgiving (Canadian), then there's my friend Kelly from Hamilton, and myself and my boyfirend who would be leaving from Buffalo/Tonawanda area. I think that we all wanted to get some good climbing in, but it'd be cool to meet some other RC.commers. Will the cliffs be insanly busy that weekend? We'd like to conserve gas so carpooling would be a plus, but the three of us who'd only be there for the weekend will likely fill a mid-sized sedan easily. Grant - I have to talk to Kelly J and Nathan to see if this is going to work for us, who's car we're going to take, and how much stuff we'll need to bring. I'll give you a call either on the weekend or early next week about this.

granite.. the parking lot was really busy (carwise) last year one of the days. the other weekend day wasnt as hard to find a spot. The cliffs will vary depending on what routes you are looking to get on.. if you want to do parking lot or meadows stuff then getting there early or coming back later is your best bet. individual routes up higher it will depend and earlier will be your better bet anyway it's hard to judge.. some weekends are packed and some are scarily empty and you wonder where people are

Don't be surprised if there are those who'll be right behind you! Cannan is also just up the road a bit and it's common for trad and sport to share the fire, have some brew and shoot the shit at these gatherings. Well, weather permitting, Meaghan and I will arrive early on Sunday and stay over one night. Her SATs are on Saturday, and she needs to pull a 1350 to get some nice financial aid at Roger Williams University. I know I will be keeping my fingers crossed! See everyone then.

In reply to: In reply to: If there is still room (and if we can bring our 9 yr old daughter) we might be for it Saturday evening onward. Still have to talk it over and figure out family logistics. Alan, is there space for us if we can make it? Please let me know. Thank, Tiff Had you down from the start ... Yes, wonderman, myself, and 9yr0ldclimbergirl will be there Saturday night. Is there anyone else bringing children? It would be cool to hang out with other kids. Dakotah is a solid 5.6 climber. Josh

Kimmyt ... check your PM's People can bring their kids if they want. Colleen has two young-uns and a teenager, Mike. Maybe Mike will feel like joining us if he sees other kids his age climbing. He's a laid back type of kid ... really nice and sport minded, but mostly Football, Baseball ... stuff like that.

Sadly, I am officially out for this one. I sprained my ankle last Friday, playing soccer; I was hoping that it would heal up in time, but, while I could make the 6+ hour drive, I wouldn't be able to enjoy the climbing at all. My ankle should be in acceptable shape for the Gunks gathering. Hope to see some people, there. T

On the topic of kids... we're bringing my 12 year old daughter. Apparently this trip rated high enough that our 'uncool' factor was a nonissue, so she'll be allowing herself to be seen with us this weekend. Depending on weather we plan to come up Friday Night and stay till possibly Monday Morning...

Thankfully, my youngest is 16 ... no more of the uncoolness factors playing in. My two oldest will be there and possible the two middle kids will show up, but I doubt that my youngest will show ... Bring 'em on! jammer

Wow... well, I'll have to remember that when we meet for the first time this weekend and keep the wife away from you... you're too damn fertile! If she gets pregnant and we have a kid that climbs the walls like a fly, I'll know it's not mine and come knockin' on your door!

Meg just turned 17, so she is probably classified as an adult, however she leaves soon to become an elementary school teacher. I am sure she can welcome anyone into the fold, and she is a very fine coach as well.

Sadly, I'm having to pass this time. I could list all the reasons I've rationalized, but it wouldn't be worth your time to read... A mix of RSI, distance, money (or lack thereof), people not making it, etc... Hopefully, I will be able to make it next year... - d.

Well, on Sunday and Monday there is only a 40% and 30% chance of rain! Besides, who trusts the weatherman anyway?

Wow: Tonight - Heavy Rain - 100% Saturday - Heavy Rain - 100% Sunday - Rain - 80% Monday - Few Showers - 30% I think I made the right choice in the end by not using up my vacation time and then driving for 8hours to Rumney this weekend. I did get myself all excited about it though....maybe I'll still get a chance to get there before the end of the season.

Unfortunately, we did not get to go. We bailed because of the rain. It might have been tolerable but between the way I deal with being cold and wet and having to camp with a 9yr old girl who has never camped in the rain, it jus would not have been fun! I have great admiration for all of you who stuck it out and hope you had fun! Sorry, I'm just not that tough! Tiff

HA we had a pretty good time depending on when you climbed and what you got on. Thurs. got picked up at my new living space in Nashua by kate and decided against the planned climbing by headlamp in favor of sleep. Crashed at jammer's place. fri. Woke up to smiling faces of KimmyT, mel and Erik and planned to meet up with them at some point during the day. Did a warm up or 2 at the meadows.. went to find kimmy etc at parking lot wall. Did a few routes there including a new on i hadnt done Squeeze my lemon.8 Laughed a bit as erik got himself truely stuck by stuffing too many things onto one bolt and took a bit of work to get himself down. Headed off to attempt to find G-spot but gave up and did a few things at lower New wave instead. Finished the day off back at the meadows to do Reposession. went back to jammers.. ate chicken, mashed potatoes and s'mores. Met Denny G, David yount and a few others i cant remember names (doh) sat. wake up to rain.. ugh.. knew tht would happen. stayed in the tent for quite a while.. no real hurry to hit up the wet rocks. decided to head up.. met everyone at Lower vader. led Obi won in probably the worst condition it can get into yet the bottom was still dry and the holds up top are jugular so it was still fun. pulled the ropes and showed them up to Upper vader which was pretty wet but they were happy to be on rock so they set up TR's.. kate did Frosted flakes and then we decided to bail to some place out of the rain. no good movies were playing in plymouth so we checked out the local sports store then the book store until it was time for dinner. got chinese take out and went back to jammers. Hung out in Dennis's beast of a trip-mobile.. they had taco's and beer then David found marshmellows and they tried playing some game that involved funny words and chipmunk cheeks full of marshmellows.(pics to come). called it a night sunday. more wet rock but not much rain. unfortunately the stuff i thought maybe do-able wasnt quite even close. bonsai was a waterfall except for some 12's on the right face. we did obi won then hoped Man with a hueco in his tights at Triple corners would be dry.. which it mostly was but the first bolt that needs to be stick clipped has a completely loose hanger that i couldnt get clipped so we bailed for wet slabs at the meadows instead. Did one of the 7's in wet but ok form. went to find G-spot again and succeeded. not knowing what order the route data base is in we guessed at what we thought was a .7 and did that before dark. walked out and got pizza for dinner. had mashmellows and s'mores with jammer by the fire he made. monday. got out fairly early with jammer and warmed up at the meadows. headed to lower vader to do some video of me on Obi won for giggles. 4ish total burns later we hoped bonsai would be ok but it wasnt. went back to the meadows for a few routes.. said bye to jammer.. did another few routes at parking lot wall and drove back to nashua. found out that almost all of the video didnt come out due to it trying to tape over old recordings which mini dv doesnt like i guess :( Fun times despite the weather... thanks jammer for hosting.. its too bad more people didnt come but we made do with who and what we had. Jake

Melissa and I went up Thursday, and both Thursday evening and Friday were nice. We bailed Friday night for Maine (made plans due to the forecast) and it looks like it was a good thing we did. It was miserable in Maine, and the radar looked like NH was getting a ton of rain as well. Fortunately, we were in a hotel, not a tent. :) Got to meet Jammer for the first time, he rocks! Also good to see Jake and bigevilgrape again. And thanks to Kimmy for ropegunning and putting up with us. :) And yes, apparently a draw, backup locker, and quickclip are just too many things for one bolt. Sorry you couldn't find the g-spot Jake. Practice, practice....

For some reason I will forever associate NH with waterfalls and climbing in the rain....funny, that. :) Thanks for a fun weekend, it was great to meet everyone. I think I have a few funny pics of the Chubby Chipmonk games in the camper, will probably write up a TR at some point later this week. Jammer, thanks for organizing the whole shebang. Sorry again that the weather turned so bad, but you'll be glad to hear that WE SAW MOOOOOOOOSE!! It was on the drive from NH to NY, somewhere in either NH or VT and we're trucking along at full speed when we see cars pulled all over off the road, so we yell, 'MOOSE!' and screech to a halt (rather hard to do in such a beast of a truck as Dennis') and tumble out in the dusky light to see people standing alongside the road staring at three rather large dark shapes that we're assuming are moose. Well, they were certainly large enough, and one had rather impressive antlers. They got scared off though (assumingly from David's massive energy.... it would pretty much scare anything off) and ran off a moment later, and we were back on the road again. Sorry, Mel, no pics, the light was too bad, but I guess the whole Moose thing isn't just a theory drummed up to get tourists into the state! K.

K ... I've put a tr here:http://www.rockclimbing.com/topic/99083 but I'd like to read what you saw, felt, heard and imagined ... sure will be fun reading, I'm sure! As for the moose ... that was just Bigfoot dressed up early for Halloween. There are no moose up here  You even said so yourself as you drove off! Let me know how the rest of the week went for you. I saw that the three of you made it to the top of our world! Then there are pics of what looks like Thin Air ... fill us in! jammer
