101 things to do with old gear...

Can't Post

I hate to throw away my old gear, even the stuff I won't climb on anymore, so I thought it would be fun to start a thread that could put some ideas on the table. Here are a few to start:

OLD FIGURE EIGHTS - I actually took them out of my rack entirely, due to a higher number of accidents related to the device. Things of the past. I actually took some fishing line and an old caribiner and maid a pretty cool wind chime. It sounds GREAT, and it's hanging from a bolt I attached to my facia on the back patio. I LOVE IT!

Here is a picture of the contraption: http://www.rockclimbing.com/photo/photo_show.php?list_sort=highest_first&list_keyword=&list_category=0&list_filter_user_id=&list_comment_user_id=&list_per_page=25&list_album_id=&list_CountryStateID=&list_AreaID=&list_SectionID=&list_mode=my&list_period=None&list_start=29&id=61500 (Figure 8 Chime)

OLD ROPES - plenty of obvious uses here... tow lines, rope climbs, tree swings, etc. But how about this: A Rope Pyramid! One pole in the middle, with several main lines staked to the ground, then tie lines in between them in your own creative spiderweb style pattern.

OLD HARNESSES - I have no idea...

Anyway, what else??!

UPDATE, October 2, 2005:
We've finally got all 101 ideas! Here is a link to the results: http://www.buenavistaclimbingclub.com/101Gear.htm, and a poll to rank the ideas for popularity. We'd like your input and feed back, so we have created this list from the online forum so you can vote on your favorite ideas, so that we may eventually rank all 101 items. It doesn't matter if you vote for one or all of them. Just vote, and we'll do the counting. Obviously not every idea made the list, and some of the ideas may seam a little trivial. So at the bottom of the page is a box for you to enter your feedback and/or suggestions. Have fun, and thanks for all the input!!

Update, October 6, 2005
So far, Wind Chimes and Rope Hammocks (items 1 & 10) are tied for first, but we need more VOTES! Keep 'em coming!

Update, October 11, 2005
Okay, we have a few votes, but we need more... otherwise it looks like a PIPE is going to be the number one use of old gear... What does that do for our reputation, huh?

Okay, as of January 8th, 2006, these are the top 10 from the list:

3. Rope Rugs
10. Rope hammocks
101. Nearly any piece of old climbing gear can be turned in to a bottle opener.
1. Figure 8 Wind Chime/Gear Wind chimes
65. Hanging bunk beds from old portaledges, or with rope, biners, and boards
30. Daisy chains and caribiners for a dog leash
47. Make a slack line with old biners (for the pulley system) and webbing
89. Make nothing out of your old gear. In other words, Weld/melt your gear together and sell it for thousands at a modern art museum in New York
98. Use a creative combination of climbing gear… (Ice axe, big bro, ascenders, etc.) to make a “pipe.” (a.k.a. “paraphernalia” - This has probably been done a lot!)
8. Christmas tree ornaments!

Of course, a few of them are tied, and the last one (8.) is actually one of many tied for number ten. (I just picked it alphabetically.)

So, keep on voting, and eventually we'll have to edit the ones that nobody seems to like! I'll post those next...

Hey, remember the guy who used cams for boat anchors? He was boating in a place with lot of rock instead of a shore line and wanted old and damaged cams cheap so he could tie to the rock without using traditional boating methods (like finsing a huge boulder to wrap the rope around).

An earlier post, http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=835316#835316 talked about making throw rugs from old ropes.

There was a post listing this web site http://www.roperugs.com/ as a resource for rope rugs.

Give the gear to some young poor high school or college kid with promise as a rock climber. He/she will treasure the gear and it will be put to good use.

Keep a few pieces for sentimental value and for conversation pieces while climbing (like my old U stem Camalots).

Okay, did I mention the ideas don't have to be practical? Let's have some fun here!

How about a hangman's noose?

Or soak it in molasses (?!) and give it to a cowboy for ropin' calves!

That's numbers 15 and 16... at least 85 to go!

I hacksawed my old Figure 8 in half to use the loops as rap rings. The first one is atop some Adirondack ice route. The second awaits a more obscure fate.

Old slings often live in the car for towing. Figures, the only time I had to tow someone I didn't have any old slings and sacrificed some current gear.

a few weeks ago my sister and I found some stray horses. Having nothing in my truck but climbing gear...well. I had something similar to a slack line between two trees and biners to webbing allowed the three horses to each move freely in thier respective areas of the slack line.

I've definately got a rope rug.

I set up a volleyball net and rigged with bootied biners

I give away hexes to those who might actually want them.

I've planted flowers in old shoes (I'm not home enough to water, and they died)

Not climbing but I have a broken bicycle fork (carbon fiber) that I made a lamp out of.

Why hasn´t anyone mentioned keychains? Pretty much anything can be turned into a key chain.

Hell, if I could fit her into my pocket, I´d turn my belayer into a keychain.

I have a dropped/retired quickdraw hanging from the rearview mirror in my jeep

A retired cam i gave to a friend ... its his first piece in his rack (he knows he cant use it so it hangs over his bedroom doorway to remind him to make some money and buy some cams)

Retired/bootied gear is always good for bailing if you need to use it (when in doubt, run it out folks. dont bail!)

I use and old 12mm rope for towing while 4wheelin

Making a rope swing/chair hammock from an 11mm rope

Hexs have no real use and neither do pitons... im still dreaming one up tho

Sweet, we have a solid 25 good ideas. I'll add a couple more cheesy ones... I've been compiling the list into a word file so that everyone can have the list with them once it's complete, in case of emergencies... well, at least once we have 101 things to do...

Maybe we should go for 1001?!

I was thinking of a couple more ideas...

-It would be cool to somehow stitch a pair of chaps on to an old harness... then what? Then go for some serious off-width/chimney action... Knee bars with chaps? What do you think?

-I'm still trying to dream up a usefull idea for hexes... other than midievil style weapons... ??? I have a nice curved set that I NEVER use... I'll think of something...

okay i know wind chime is a repeat, but i think hexes (especially the large ones) would do great on a chime. i have a tendency to call them cow bells anyway.

on of the coolest things i have seen made out of gear was a mobile for a child's room. i have no pictures, but my friend took some wire clothes hangers and cord and hung everything from them. ice screws, pitons, cams, carabiners, nuts, and a few more things. the kid is almost two and can identify almost all the stuff. i guess it doesn't have to be in a kids room if you are artistic.

how do you know when to retire things such as a hex, or nut? the stopper on the necklace looked fine (to me maybe thats why i am not tradding yet....)

you could take old webbing and weave it in a chair frame for the seat part.
does that make sense?

Hate to admit it, but my clothes line (solar-powered laundry dryer) is anchored on one end by a cinch-type rivet hanger over a wood screw on a patio post. The other end is attached to my apricot tree via a clove hitch.

If you cut it right, old harnesses can be made into makeshift gear slings for lead climbing. Or just cut the leg loops off and make a sweet belt. I think that counts as 2 different ones!

Okay, these ideas are great! I thought of another one that will bring us to 40... so we're making pretty good progress...

I don't remember what they're called, but does anyone remember those old wooden russian... dolls? They fit inside each other, and pull appart in the middle... ??

Seems to me, curved and regular hexes would fit inside each other well... a little primer and a good artist and you have your self the climbers version of whatever those dolls are called... And if you paint numbers/shapes/letters on them, they would double as a sort of learning tool for kids. (Same principal as that pyramid of doughnuts, only much more expensive...)

I guess that might count as two, but I'll wait on the russian dolls till someone finds out the real name, then I'll give them the credit!

Sweet, Kaleidoscopes RULE! Great idea!!!

Anybody remember the name of the russian doll things yet?

I though of a few more... then I gotta hit the sack.

42. Hex candle sets (fill with wax, or use as holders)
43. Paper weights
44. Old crash pads make great camp chairs (probably a common use anyway.)
45. Old crash pads make great “changing tables” (I have a new daughter...)
46. This is the truth... I actually used a piece of the high density foam from my crash pad as a GASKET for the top bolt on the front suspension on my Jeep. It was just a temporary fix when I did it, but was still working 6 MONTHS LATER!

good night!

At two in the morning i think it's just me and you....jeezus, I gotta go to bed.

#47: Make a slackline with old biners (for the pulley system) and webbing...I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet!

#48: Take that same webbing, but put one end way up high, clip a biner to it and you've got a zip-line! Use a harness to tether in or just use old slings as handles...maybe even ascenders or a big-bro as a handle too!

There's a lady up here in AK that uses tubular webbing as handles for hand-bags.

Retired biners are good for hauling cans of bear spray...

I make a hobby out of painting things that really don't need to be painted... so if I had retired hexes sitting around I'd paint flowers or climbers or something on them.

And of course I hang my hammock with retired gear.

They're called Russian Matrioshka (or Nesting) Dolls.

The larger hole on a Super 8 or Safety 8 could be used as a picture frame for your favorite climbing photographs!

Or do the same thing with large carabiners.

This recycles it back into climbing, but...
Old tubular webbing as rope protector for anchor lines (slide the rope inside a section of the webbing).

A small hex inside a big hex makes for a nice bell. Like a bear bell for your pack or dog in grizzly country.

With a little glue, a big hex could also become a nice candle holder.

I was thinking of trying to make a hammock out of an old rope and some webbing.

I've used old rope for belts, swiss seats, gear slings, car rack tie-downs and an occasional tow rope.

Wait... are you telling me that the fuzzy thing hanging off the back of my harness isn't supposed to have a beer in it already when I'm climbing?

Sorry, no new ideas for old gear unless you want to get real crafty and build a contraption for hanging your mailbox (instead of encasing it in brick like they do around here) or potted plants from the thatched roof of an outdoor patio.

There might be some lighting ideas involved with hexes, too... If you can run old xmas lights into them, who knows.

Here's a brilliant (yet somewhat demeaning) use for old hexes.

When your wife or girlfriend yells at you to set the table for those bastard friends of hers....... use the hexes as napkin rings. Everyone will appreciate the metal shavings, dirt, and encrusted chalk on their linens. They might just learn something about class.

Hey all,

At Disneyland's California Adventure there is a store that has climbing related stuff all over the walls as decoration. Anyway, they have a shelving unit made from Climbing rope and boards. It hangs from the ceiling and all the shelves are held together with ropes and biners. I check it out every time I am there. I had the same idea to make some kids bunk beds in the same way when the time comes. I had planned to make the beds look like portaledges. You could also do the unit in a cantilever fashion where the first shelf is tied to the wall with the rope at 45 degrees. Hell even a TV holder.

Pretty cool huh!

take a static rope and tie it between 2 tall trees, as close to the top as you can, clip a rope to the middle and tie yourself into that one and just jump of the horizontal rope...the trees flex, creating some good elasticity. just make sure your measurements are right or...well you get it.

you could put some hexes on a board in such a way that you could make a coat rack. with some spacers you could use just about anything to make a coat rack: figure 8, nuts, cam lobes. pitons could be driven into the wood for the same purpose (i think. i don't have any pitons though.).

you guys/gals should really check out http://www.readymademag.com/. they are my new favorite magazine that does a lot of recreation of new things from old stuff. they made a coat rack out of old orange juice boxes a couple issues ago.

i may just have to retire some gear so i can make a coat rack.

I used to have a gerbil named Harold. Harold was a pretty good gerbil but he was also somewhat onrey and bit me every time I tried to pick him up and pet him like they do on the box he came in from the pet store. Most of the time I'd just start crying and violently shake my finger (with him biting in deep) until he flew off and, inevitably, landed in my sock drawer.

Is all of this completely meaningless? Probably, but perhaps not... It did spawn an idea for (are you ready for this? are you? huh?) a habi-trail!

* Take a bunch of old, smelly, ratty gym socks (gerbils like those anyway)
* Cut off the ends (or just leave those holes your toes made)
* Stretch the end of a sock over a large hex and use it as a connector between socks by stretching another sock over the other end, and repeat. You can wrap them around your bedroom floor or drape them over things. Heck, you might even just suspend it from the ceiling!

Now, I know most hexes are not that big but I've always been told that gerbils can fit into some tiny places. So, use smaller hexes as well. If the little crap factory won't run through the smaller ones you can entice him with peanut butter or light the socks on fire. That should get him moving.

Old carabiners can be used as either curtain rings or shower curtain rings. Me and my boyfriend plan on using some old D shaped biners for the curtains, but decided that Ovals would be better for the shower.

uses for hexes?
plant some plants in the bigger ones. put them on a saucer or something, so that you dont get your desk wet, wen you water them. the coolest thing would be to put a bonsai in one, expecially one in the root over rock style. or just make a mambonsai out of it, with some model railroad rockclimbers. hm, i might just do that, i just need a hex, since all of mine are in regular use.

if i go out on weekends, i always have got an old biner clipped to my pants, to open beer bottles with. also a good way to start a conversation  "are you a real free climber? without the rope and such things??"

i also always wanted tu use a bigg #11 hex (preferably new and shiny) as a necklace, for going to some stupid gangsta club and make myself also cool and bling bling and stuff. "Disco Stu likes disco bling- bling" 8^)

Ice axes? Medieval/klingon weapons!!

many biners make good brass knuckles

make a belt out of webbing and biners

suport you kinky fetishes. eights are available in different sizes, so pick the right size and uses it as co##ring, a cam the fits into a fist sized crack also fits into something else where some people like fists
Kids! dont do this at home! it will be extremely anyoing to tell mom and daddy about why they need to bring you to the doctor imidiately.

my friend introduced me to another use of old carabiners. brain teaser.

here is the game. take 3 carabiners and link them together so that unlinking anyone of them unlinks them all. so linking them in a row and undoing the one in the middle doesn't count, because if you undo the one on the end two of them are still connected. does that make sense to anyone?

if anyone wants i might be able to describe the solution, but you can probably figure it out (assuming i have made the directions clear enough)

Anybody remember the name of the russian doll things yet?

They're called Russian Matrioshka (or Nesting) Dolls.

Sweet! Thanks fargoclimber... you get the credit for that one.

We're up to 76, NOT including the figure eight co**ring, and cams for... uh... fisting... That's disgusting. I edited those out... but you can all put them on your own list if your interested. They won't be on my list!

There are some great ideas though! I changed the wording on some of them a bit... hope you don't mind... trying to shorten them a bit. The hamster idea was hilarious. I put the whole idea in for clarity. I like it!

Here's the list so far:

101 Uses for your Old Climbing Equipment (Practical or otherwise)

1. Figure 8 Wind Chime/Gear Wind chimes
2. Rope Pyramid/Playground novelty
3. Rope Rugs
4. Boat anchors (in canyon rivers) with old cams
5. Tow lines (Static ONLY!)
6. Rope tree swings
7. Knotted ropes for training
8. Christmas tree ornaments!
9. Chairs from old harness and/or ropes
10. Rope hammocks
11. Chalk bag fleece to make gloves (sewing skills)
12. Hand-me-downs for young climbers (good gear only!)
13. Conversation pieces, for old time sake…
14. Hangman’s noose!
15. Cowboy’s rope for Ropin’ Calves (Soaked in molasses for some reason…)
16. Earrings! (Or for other body piercings)
17. Safety lines, painting the house!
18. Necklace from old cam pieces or nuts
19. Fig. 8’s for rap rings (caution!)
20. Rear view mirror gear!
21. Crazy key-chains
22. Jimmy-rig a volleyball net
23. Old shoes for flower planters (lots of miracle grow needed!)
24. Make “medieval” weapons and join a biker gang
25. Old harnesses for a “sex swing” (???)
26. Combine old harness and chaps for crazy OW’s and chimneys
27. Make a rotating baby mobile, especially with painted HEXES!
28. Cow bells from old hexes
29. Horse gear: lead and picket lines from old ropes and biners
30. Daisy chains and caribiners for a dog leash
31. Weave old webbing in to a chair for the seat
32. Close line (a.k.a. solar powered laundry dryer) from an old rope (of course)
33. Webbing/rope for a dog collar.
34. Use an old haul bag, build an internal frame, and use it for a dog house
35. Old harness rearranged to be used as a make-shift gear sling
36. Cut off leg loops, use old harness for a belt
37. Old buckles from harnesses for belts, packs, accessories…
38. Hex salt and pepper shakers! (Welding/Plugs?)
39. Hex mugs (A little welding)
40. Integrated children’s learning blocks with old hexes (Hex pyramid)
41. Big-Bro kaleidoscopes!
42. Hex candle sets (fill with wax, or use as holders)
43. Paper weights
44. Old crash pads make great camp chairs
45. Old crash pads make great “changing tables”
46. High density foam from crash pad as suspension bolt gasket (or other gasket type)
47. Make a slack line with old biners (for the pulley system) and webbing
48. Use old webbing as a “jimmy-rigged” zip-line. Use a harness to tether in or just use old slings as handles...maybe even ascenders or a big-bro as a handle too!
49. Tubular webbing as handles for hand-bags
50. Retired biners are good for hauling cans of bear spray
51. Make a hobby out of painting things that really don't need to be painted... i.e. retired hexes sitting around - paint flowers or climbers or something on them.
52. Caribiners in general are excellent for hanging stuff… anything… flower pots, hammocks, engine blocks, whatever…
53. Old Hexes would make great Russian Matrioshka (or Nesting) Dolls
54. Picture Frames: The larger hole on a Super 8 or Safety 8 could be used as a picture frame for your favorite climbing photographs! Or do the same thing with large carabiners.
55. Sell old gear on eBay to make a sleazy buck or two! (not recommended!)
56. Old chalk bags and/or boulder bags would make interesting purses for the ladies.

66. Cantilever shelf system (also good for a TV stand)
67. Tree bungee: take a static rope and tie it between 2 tall trees, as close to the top as you can, clip a rope to the middle and tie yourself into that one and just jump of the horizontal rope...the trees flex, creating some good elasticity. just make sure your measurements are right or...well you get it…
68. Crimpers for your climbing wall: Take some hexes, and larger nuts, put some decking screws into the holes and screw them to your wall. Put them on a overhang for some super sick pinches.
69. Drawer handles for household furniture
70. Hexes (or any loud gear) and beer cans (or any can) as a “wedding streamer” from the back of your buddy’s car after you tried to talk him out of it!
71. Coat rack made from any old gear fastened to a board or wall
72. Habi-trail!

73. Old carabiners can be used as either curtain rings or shower curtain rings
74. Old hexes would make interesting Bonsai planters
75. Brass knuckles from old carabiners

Weave a basket out of old climbing rope, then hang it from a ceiling or set it in a corner somewhere. In fact, depending on your skills, you could weave pretty much anything out of rope or webbing.

What could you use a belay device for? I'm thinking one cool ornament... 8^)

Tube-style devices would be great for dried flower arrangements.

I could see ladies using a bugette or similar small device as a scarf...holder-thingy. Whatever those things are that you knot and twist your scarf through to make it stylish-looking and hold it in place. Or.. shawl.. or... whatever those are called.

If I had a fish tank, I'd drop random climbing gear in to watch the fishies play in it.

And when I retire old cord, I knot it up and let the cat chase it. His favorite toy!

Wow, some of this is getting... confusing. I tried to make the best of it... we're up to 86.

I'll throw down 87... hmmm... thinking... aha! No, taken... let's see...

Got it!

Line an old helmet with saran wrap and use it as a punch bowl.

My wife suggested a helmet as a planter... even better, a CHIA PET!

That's 88.

Weld/melt your gear together and sell it for thousands at a modern art museum in New York.

That's 89.

Bring it on.

Old, big hexes as pen holders. Its pretty classy.

I use alot of my old gear (and some new) as extreme tree climbing gear (ropes, acenders, harness ). Good stuff

Once again, it dosent have to be retired, but; pulleys + rope + pull up bar + a couple biners + a harness = romantic night with the misses (or Mr).

havent tried this, but maybe make a light out of an old forged friend, just mount it upside down on a nice base and then rig a light on top so you pull the cam trigger to turn the light on and off. it would be a design challenge to get the lamp parts connected to the cam and make it look all nice. if you have any old forged friends to donate to me I'd love to try it (or maybe just keep climbing on them... :D

Well, you could
1) Take a #11 hex (wow - all this focus on hexes), cut slots with a saw, and stand your CD's up in it.
2) Take smaller nuts & glue them to a board, creating slots to place the cd's in.
3) Do the same with cams - that might look cool, be a little hard to reach the triggers to remove the cd's.

Old hexes could be used as a branding iron by adding a pole. Hell you could brand yourself or friends to show how dedicated you are to climbing. Maybe start a climbing cult. Or maybe a ranch. Hexcentric ranch beef. I'd eat that.

I think that a belay tube would make a pretty kick-ass belly button ring.

I have a buddy who has those 3/4" spacer earrings in his ear lobes, so he has these giant holes there when he takes them out. Carabiners would fit rght through there. If you want dangly earrings, hang a few small nuts or nut tools off of the carabiner too.

Okay, only 3 more and we'll have 101! Let's make these good ones! Then I'll post the entire list for everyone to read, and maybe we can clean up the list a bit. Then I'll put it in a nice word file that you can store on your computer for safe keeping, and in case of emergencies!

Okay, THREE more! I can hardly wait...

99: ??
100: ??
101: ??

Maybe we could even rank them for popularity sake?! (The "bong" would automatically be given a handicap, of course, for fairness sake... not to jump to conclusions about all those psycho, tree-huggin', lovie-dovie, hippy climber freeks.)

Weld a hex to the exhaust of your car. much cooler then those oh so custom sport exhausts everyone has nowadays.

built an mp3 player or usb stick into a hex. would definitely require some skills, but i could imagine it would be worth it.

not really something for "old" gear, butstuff some climbing emergency stuff into your biggest hex. some first aid gear, a small light, a small knife, a lighter, a space blanket. and if you remove all, you could use the hex as a tube style rap/belay device.

nearly everything can be turned ionto an bottle opener. I have opened beer bottle with neraly everything. hex, ice axe, biner, and whatnot.

if you are into knifemaking, using a big carbiner for the handle of a knife might be a fun idea. i have no idea how to attach the blade to it, but since the biner then hasnt neccesarily to be full strenght, there is shurely a way for it to be done.

skinnyclimber: i'm sure a pipe could made made out of an ice screw. or a bong out of a nalgene (if that counts as climbing gear)

i've found that if you cut the camming part off of petzl ascenders so you only have the oval handle (or U, as it may become), you can sharpen the side opposite the rubber and make it into a pretty neat knife. it dulls very quickly though

For your pets.. Old webbing, esp tubular webbing, is great as a leash, and doesn't get too annoying when it does twist (climbing rope twists VERY badly)..
and the old dynamic rope, I use as a tether in the yard for a malinois - this way if he runs too fast, his 2" collar and dynamic rope give him a nice "catch" :)

SWEET, 101 has been reached! I'm going to post the list below. I am also going to put it on my web site so we can start taking ratings on a 1-10 scale (10 being the highest), then we can rank them for creativity, usefulness, and whatever else you think is relevant. We can also decide which ones should be scrapped, and replaced with something better... When it's finally finished, I'll make it into a nice document that everyone can print, fold up, and carry in his/her wallet for safe keeping...

Great thinking everyone!

The link for the VOTING will be here, as soon as it is ready.

Here is the list, please post your feedback for opinions on what needs further explanation, and what may need less... New ideas would also be great, to overwrite some of the "less interesting" ones:

57. Old chalk bags as...drum roll please... BEER COOZIES!!!!!
58. Old tubular webbing as rope protector for anchor lines (slide the rope inside a section of the webbing)
59. Door Handles from big old hexes
60. Tie downs with old rope and/or webbing… webbing could be used to replace ratcheting cinch straps
61. Get real crafty and build a contraption for hanging your mailbox
62. Luminaries: Old hexes or big bro’s (or whatever) with candles and/or Christmas lights inside
63. Napkin rings out of old hexes
64. Neckerchief slide for a scout scarf from old hexes (or other gear…)
65. Hanging bunk beds from old portaledges, or with rope, biners, and boards
72. Habi-trail!

”Now, I know most hexes are not that big but I've always been told that gerbils can fit into some tiny places. So, use smaller hexes as well. If the little crap factory won't run through the smaller ones you can entice him with peanut butter or light the socks on fire. That should get him moving.”
73. Old carabiners can be used as either curtain rings or shower curtain rings
74. Old hexes would make interesting Bonsai planters
75. Brass knuckles from old carabiners
76. Brainteaser: Here is the game. Take 3 carabiners and link them together so that unlinking anyone of them unlinks them all. so linking them in a row and undoing the one in the middle doesn't count, because if you undo the one on the end two of them are still connected.
77. Make hand rails for stairs or trails from old ropes and webbing
78. Old piton or hex would make a decent guitar slide
79. Rope bridge from… old ropes! (and webbing)
80. Lashings from old rope and webbing (make LOTS of things with lashings…)
81. Diagonal river crossing rigged with old rope and biners
82. Back pack ornaments (for conversation… or wannabe’s)
83. Weave a basket from rope… (Elaborate: how about a basketball hoop?)
84. Tube gear (i.e. big bro’s, large hexes) for dried flower arrangements
85. Fish tank accessories out of any old pieces of gear.
86. Toys for your pets… rope bones (dogs), dangling things (cats), etc.
87. Line an old helmet with saran wrap and use it as a punch bowl.
88. Use an old helmet as a planter... even better, a CHIA PET!
89. Make nothing out of your old gear. In other words, Weld/melt your gear together and sell it for thousands at a modern art museum in New York
90. Hexes or Big Bros as a pen holder
91. Use “retired” gear for “extreme tree climbing” …At your own risk!
92. Old hall bag would make a good laundry basket
93. Make a light out of an old forged friend, just mount it upside down on a nice base and then rig a light on top so you pull the cam trigger to turn the light on and off.
94. Make a CD rack: 1) Take a #11 hex (wow - all this focus on hexes), cut slots with a saw, and stand your CD's up in it. 2) Take smaller nuts & glue them to a board, creating slots to place the cd's in. 3) Do the same with cams - that might look cool, be a little hard to reach the triggers to remove the cd's. (You are responsible for your damaged CD’s, no one else!)
95. Old hexes could be used as a branding iron by adding a pole. “Hell you could brand yourself or friends to show how dedicated you are to climbing. Maybe start a climbing cult. Or maybe a ranch. Hexcentric ranch beef. I'd eat that.” Marc
96. Belay tube/plate as a belly button ring…
97. Old quick draws (the webbing part) could be sewn edge to edge to make a nice hot pad or trivet.
98. Use a creative combination of climbing gear… (Ice axe, big bro, ascenders, etc.) to make a “pipe.” (a.k.a. “paraphernalia” - This has probably been done a lot!)
99. Use a large hex to “pimp” your exhaust pipe… this should raise some questions only a climber could answer…
100. Use an old rope to make a bunch of “tether-ball” lines at the local park. (You’ll also need some poles, old tires, and concrete…)
101. Nearly any piece of old climbing gear can be turned in to a bottle opener.

I haven't read this whole thread but...

Since I'm making a wind chime out of worn and bootied nut tools and belay devices, I had to post

Peace

Does anyone have the plans for turning your old rope into a rug. I thought it would look great on the front step of my house.

Okay, we have a few votes, but we need more... otherwise it looks like a PIPE is going to be the number one use of old gear... What does that do for our reputation, huh?

Okay, here's the top 10 so far:

ROPE HAMMOCKS is first, followed by wind chimes, then the last of the top 10, in no particular order:
3. Rope Rugs
30. Daisy chains and caribiners for a dog leash
65. Hanging bunk beds from old portaledges, or with rope, biners, and boards
98. Use a creative combination of climbing gear… (Ice axe, big bro, ascenders, etc.) to make a “pipe.” (a.k.a. “paraphernalia” - This has probably been done a lot!)
101. Nearly any piece of old climbing gear can be turned in to a bottle opener.
8. Christmas tree ornaments!
20. Rear view mirror gear!
47. Make a slack line with old biners (for the pulley system) and webbing

VOTE HERE: http://www.buenavistaclimbingclub.com/101Gear.htm if you want to change the results!

Okay, here is a list of the items that haven't gotten a SINGLE VOTE! If anyone thinks they are good ideas, then you'd better hurry up and cast a vote or they may be lost forever, traded for something like " making a Christmas wreath from old caribiners and gear." Here they are, the rejects to date:

7. Knotted ropes for training
11. Chalk bag fleece to make gloves (sewing skills)
14. Hangman’s noose!
22. Jimmy-rig a volleyball net
40. Integrated children’s learning blocks with old hexes (Hex pyramid)
46. High density foam from crash pad as suspension bolt gasket (or other gasket type)
50. Retired biners are good for hauling cans of bear spray
55. Sell old gear on eBay to make a sleazy buck or two! (not recommended!)
79. Rope bridge from… old ropes! (and webbing)
80. Lashings from old rope and webbing (make LOTS of things with lashings…)
83. Weave a basket from rope… (Elaborate: how about a basketball hoop?)
86. Toys for your pets… rope bones (dogs), dangling things (cats), etc.
88. Use an old helmet as a planter... even better, a CHIA PET!

Oh, yes, don't forget to vote here:

51. Make a hobby out of painting things that really don't need to be painted... i.e. retired hexes sitting around - paint flowers or climbers or something on them.

That totally made my day... lmao

i'd be willing to bet that while it's not very creative... most people just use their old biners as "gear" biners... i.e... non-essential/life threatening securing of equipment or items. It's by far not the coolest answer, but i'd bet it's hands down the most common.

i've personally used a quickdraw as a makeshift banana hanger before... it works great until you've got only 1 banana left.

additionally... while i've never seen anyone wear them permanently or for more than just a few hysterical seconds... i know for a fact that dudes/ladies with 1/3" or bigger plugs in their ears could benefit from a fine pair of "BIN-EARS" ... i.e... biners as earrings. See also lips etc.

Normally I use a Spirit to hold my keys and open beer bottles but at the moment said biner is holding my car's muffler so it doesn't fall off.
