Shot of my cat (i hate cats, but not this one) while sitting in bed last week, post ACL reconstruction. One of my first shots with the Pentax K10D.
He was cleaning himself and I knew he'd yawn but it
came a little too soon as the clouds came in and turned
the window light down a few stops before i could up the
iso. ended up shooting at f/2.0 which was much too shallow.
One of my first shots with my Pentax D (the original Pentax DSLR). Actually this was the 9th image i'd shot with the camera. ISO 800 and nice and clean in the highlights shadows
aren't too shabby either.
And the big adventure.
My wife looking very concerned in the family waiting room before we got called back to preop holding. She wasn't concerned about me, just the $31,000 bill she is the guarantor
on...actually our share is a meager $4000.
The best surgeons in the world aren't free.
And the $31,000 knee along with my albatros (aka. the brace)

of our nations greatest heros. The changing of the Honor Guard is something I've loved since childhood. The Honor Guard of the 3rd ID has ceremonially guarded the Tomb of the
Unknowns 24/7/365 for about the last 70 years. Hurricanes, blizzards, 110F heat, they walk the mat. And they do it voluntarily on their free time. Every motion, step, even the
shoulder they carry the rifle on while walking the mat has a symbolic purpose.

I like the hockey shots (though not the teams in 'em). I also think we should veto any more kitty/dog shots. Howvever the canine redpoint free solo of the 5.3 was pretty badass...

Had a chance to shoot the gymnastics with a 1d Mark II, and you have not lived until you shoot at 8.5fps! Now just have to work one of those into the budget...

your golden eagle shot is awesome...very tight and sharp!! Lens and distance info please?
btw, was this a natural shot or in captivity. the background looks clean so matter what it's a nice shot but your so close it would require a super specialized lens to get such a good shot in the wild.

Thanks! The eagle was in captivity, she is a rescued raptor, in the shot you can see her wings aren't exactly even. When I saw her, she was being handled outside her cage and fed a freshly killed prairie dog. They let me get about 10ft away from her. I took all of the shots with my D70, and the eagle shot was: 1/400s at f5.0 using my 70-300mm VR lens at 165mm.

definitely would have been tough to crop in like that in a natural setting with the 70-300 but it looks like it was the perfect lens for the job. good exposure and nice and sharp. really like it. all my eagle shots have been natural and the bird hasn't been far off (in a tree under our boat several times) but I've always been caught with the wrong gear (wide-short tele zooms and a converter in a rocking boat, gear that works best for paddling, not wildlife) while paddling. the results are heavily post scan crops and not so sharp.
fresh prairie dog...yummie!!!

Nice landscapes too. I like the line of small rocks in the 2nd photo that lead your eye into the photo from left to right.

I believe only one shot I posted was HDR.
Yep, I mess around with it. I usually bracket everything (film, JPEG or raw) so it gives me an option in the end.
HDR is a great tool if used right. I've seen so many bad images and I've seen many good ones. Some people like the extreme end of it, where they get 15 stops of light in an image, I prefer gaining just a few extra stops and still having a natural looking photo.

Wow, these are great! Are those light sticks that the kayakers had? That's like lightning on the water.
I really like that last picture. Well composed, well lit foreground and of course that lightning with the purple sky! What do the figures in the foreground represent? Did you tweak the overall color?

Spc Magnuson is the first one, SSG Cune is the commander of the relief...the third guy got kicked out I'm pretty sure...thats funny...good pictures though - I showed them and they were like....wtf? why are there pictures of me on a rock climbing forum?

To answer your questions:
The kayakers were a guided group, and had lights on top of poles sticking up off the back of their boats.
Ih the last picture, I believe the sculptures were erected to celebrate the Sydney 2000 Olympics. The foreground was lit by a street-lamp just to the right of the camera. Overall colour balance is pretty close to what I remember (maybe pushed slightly towards the blue.

Sweet, thats a small world. Those guys are so robotic thats it's funny to think of them as real people.
I love the symbolism of everything involved though.
Yeah, I took those in September so they are definitely recent enough to still be on post.
That's hilarious though, not that someone from somewhere recognized them, but that it was on RC.com on a random thread.
A little boredom set in the other night so a did a little head and shoulders portrait of Yoda testing out my wireless flash using a homemade snoot and diffuser. Yoda is only 2 inches high and this was a 1:2 macro at 300mm.

he was probably almost 6inches long.
i've only seen about two in my life, one on the Caney Creek backpacking trip, and one I don't remember where.
They are rare, or at least so well camoflaouged that they aren't often seen.
What is more rare these days, something I used to see all the time as a kid, are Praying Mantis. I used to keep them as pets. Now I've went maybe 8 years without seeing one. Same with grasshoppers, although I see them frequently, they are not in the same quantity as even 10 years ago.

Balanophyllia elegans, one of the few corals on the California coast. It's a solitary coral that doesn't form reefs. This specimen is about 1/2 inch wide.

This is a beautiful little 1 inch long sea slug from the California coast. It feeds on animals related to sea anemones which have stinging cells for defense. For some reason the stinging cells don't explode when Hermissenda feeds on them. Instead the stinging cells migrate to those colorful plumes which you see on the back of the sea slug. There, the stinging cells become part of Hermissenda's arsenal of defense.

A few from my 12 week post op visit to Manhattan. Monday March 5th. Exactly a year after I took a 600ft fall in under 15 seconds.
Not the best weather. Actually typical March in the Northeast.
Rain, snow, sleet, gusty winds, some warm sun, dreary, nice sunset from the express bus, then brutally cold at night. When I got off the train in PoK it was below 0F.

I used a Nikonos I with extension tubes on a 35mm lens and a wire frame for focus and composition. I think the magnification was 1:1 or perhaps greater.
The film used was Kodachrome.
It was lit with a handheld Honeywell Stobonar 600 (one of the original potato masher strobes) in a cast aluminum flash housing. The housing was made by the Anchor Shack, which later grew into Oceanic Products.
I'll post another one in a bit which I just recently found in a shoe box (as were these!)

Thanks Paul. My camera is a Panasonic FZ50 and I used a Raynox DCR 150 macro lens with the zoom at the max telephoto setting. The light is a desk lamp nothing special. I found the ladybug at night so I went outside and plucked a leaf off of the tree to give a more "natural environment".

I wrote a 8pg article on it (photos included) that was published in my alpine clubs journal.
Nuts and Bolts of the accident:
really a stupid mistake top of the climb, reached for something blowing away (partners glove) and edged my crampons. tough to self arrest on ice :) even harder intermittently airborne/bouncing and touching down (or as my partner put it on the way out, "you must be tired from the changing so many time zones during your flight"). i had three attempts at arresting and couldn't get the pick to bite at all, just bounced out, tearing some muscles in my sternum from the force. the 40ft vertical onto the 20ft snow pack was the highlight of the flight.
In the end, just a torn ACL to show for it. Repaired now, so with any luck nothing but some time and some medical bills and an renewed appreciation for the fact that mountains don't mess around. They don't know grades or elevations. Gravity is gravity, wind is wind, cold is cold and mistakes can be serious.

Paul, cool photo for sure, though I have had my 70-200 (non-is) for a couple years now. It is a rad lens, though the 400 2.8L IS is even better. The sharpest lens I have ever used. Amazing, really. Except that it weighs nearly 13 pounds and costs more then all of my other gear, combined...

A few from the ECAC Hockey Tournament in Albany.
#5 ranked Clarkson defeated #18 ranked Quinnapiac for the ECAC title. #14 ranked St Lawrence beat #11 ranked Darthmouth for 3rd place in the tournament.
Good seats but the glass was beat to crap in front of me. Shot with my old SLR (small and easy to sneak in, camera in one pocket, lens in other) and my slower travel tele lens. Mostly ISO 3200 JPEG. Really it did OK but so sluggish compared to the new one.

I just got my Canon 24-105 F4 Image Stabilized lens. Here's one of the first shots taken with it. I think this along with my 10-22 mm will be my two climbing lenses. After a 10 year absense I'm ready to start climbing and shooting again!

I love the shot of the dog with that green ball. I can just feel the slime as you pick it up to throw it!
Those concert shots are fine. Did they let you on stage? What kind of ISO and shutter speed did you need to caputure the guitarist mid-flight?

Thanks much, those balls do get a bit slimy for sure. But, they just keep bringing them back. Over and over and over.
Nope not on stage, just bouncing with the hippies in the crowd. ISO 3200, F2.8, Av mode was how my 5D was set up, actual EXIF should be still embedded in the photos. The light was all over the place, so I had a lot of really bad shots as well. And, I just had my 15mm Fisheye, which was too wide, really. Next time going to try to bring something like 16-35 2.8, or even a faster prime. The show was killer, and I can't wait to see them again.

RAWHIDE, you should fade the WM a bit more or make it smaller. It's too visible to the point of you nice work being completely obscured by it.

I put the camera on a tripod and shot remotely for this one. This is from my local action pistol club match from this last weekend. The idea is to shoot and move as quickly as you can and still be relatively accurate. You go too fast and you lose because your accuracy goes to hell, if you go too slow because your trying to be accurate you will also lose! This shooter is doing something which requires a lot of practice to do well and that is move and shoot at the same time!

Photography has turned into a good thing to do when I'm injured. Granted a point-and-shoot with a crappy lens does'nt help much but the lack of hours of painstaking preparation seem to be what really holds back my random forays into the woods. Luckily my memory of these days is still sharp and fresh.

thanks. It is servo focus, but I wish I had zone focus thingy.... That little guy is really fast and sometimes hard to track... Nope, not a filter, it is shot using one of the earliest canon EF lenses, EF 135/2.8, not the fastest af but being a f2.8 lens, 20D can use high precision tracking. Also designed as a portrait lens, it has beautiful bokeh...

A few recent shots from a global climate change rally in Albany, NY organized by Step It Up 2007 http://www.stepitup2007.org. The Albany rally was part of 1300+ rallies held April 14th all across the US to foster awareness various ways to reduce individual footprints of CO2 emissions, as well as enact national policy change aimed at reducing carbon emissions 80% by 2050.

More Action Pistol. I'm working on refining my technique for this kind of photography. The camera was fired remotely. This shooter has an "open" gun. He has a red dot sight (not a laser) and a magazine which usually holds anywhere from 27 to 29 rounds. On the front of the gun, either the barrel or slide has slots or holes bored into it which lets the escaping gas be directed upwards to help control recoil.
Scoring is based on speed and accuracy. The little blue box being helf over this shooters head is a timer that counts the shots being fired and assigns a time to each shot. This competitor is moving from one shooting location to another and reloading during the transition to save time. Notice his trigger finger is not inside the trigger guard. This prevents accidental discharges while reloading.
This competor's gun is a "limited" category gun. It is more like a "traditional" gun having fewer modifications than the "Open" category gun.
Let me tell you, Camera gear freaks have nothing over these guys when it comes to equipment knowlege!

All shots were with a point and shoot Kodak Easy Share Z730. The flower was shot with a macro and wide angle lens. The iguanas shot with the same. The rest just standard internal lens.

Some beautiful photos appearing here - a few are simply awe-inspiring.
I'm visiting Sydney for a few weeks, for work - knocked off early and wandered down to Coogee beach, then did the post-processing in a burst of insomnia - it's 1:55am here now. Hope you enjoy! One caveat - these were all processed on a crappy laptop screen, so colour may be a bit out. First three are stitched panoramas.
A line of dinghies along the beach:
Flowers on the cliff edge.
The Coogee Bay Sea Baths
An imposing face in the rock, staring out to sea
A funky sculpture in the park above the sea cliffs
I got lucky with this one. The almost-full moon was rising in exactly the right place to beautifully back-light the sculpture. The streaks in the sky are from planes, but come out looking like meteors, giving a distinctly "other-worldly" appearance to the scene. My favourite, I think.

A few from this weekend:
A note on the photos, some have said they seem overly saturated. However, I DID NOT UP THE SATURATION. The colors in all but one photo are accurate (or as accurate as my sensor portrayed them in RAW). The only photo with distinctly boosted saturation is the HDR shot of the D&H building and it mostly affected the blues and greens. If you view enough of these tulip photos you'll notice they all seem to glow with strong backlighting. And while I was going for that effect I did not realize how pronounced it would be till i was viewing them at home.
A lot were taken with a 35mm shift lens which is quickly becoming a favorite lens. I was hoping it wouldn't be a novelty lens when I got it and thus far the more i use it, the more I want to use it.
The HDR Image...I'm not really a fan of HDR because it looks so fake but it can make a higher contrast scene look decent. This was taken around 4pm. I went back the next morning at 5:30am to retake the shot but I haven't looked at those images yet.

Nice - very colourful!
Visited the Sydney Botanic Gardens yesterday evening, and came across the most incredibly tame wild flock of cockatoos I've ever seen, feeding on fallen seeds. Lost a (full) memory card while crawling around on my belly amongst them  but gained an amazing experience.
This inquisitive fellow was particularly fascinated with the strange bird behind the glass.

Yeah - mostly they just completely ignored me, except to perhaps hop a few steps out of the way as I crawled through. Most of the pics are from less than 30 cm - I had to clean a streak off my UV filter from the last guy. Beautiful (and intelligent) creatures.

Nice work Wes. Love the wolf shots.
Some from my minor adventure this weekend...my first hike in 6 mos (although I've been mountain biking for about 2 weeks now). my knee is a bit sore but felt good while hiking. realistically, i should be doing hard trails in less then 6 weeks and perhaps climbing by the late summer....yay!!!!

From Saturday:
First time testing the new camera and the 2.8 80-200 together outside the house.
Tracking these fellows isn't easy as they run the course at about 20ft/sec or for American football fans it's about a 6.5sec 40Y. But for perpective imagine at combines the players had to jump hurdles, run through tunnels, climb ladders, ramps, cut tight corners, and weave during that 40, and the 40 lasted about 45 seconds. Basically I'm saying this is faster then any professional human sport and a great way to test out the capabilities of a camera.

A few recent ones from a paddling trip with my Dad.
From my annual birthday trek to beer fest in Montreal with the family:
This one I was ridiculed for the mini tripod but no one complained about the end result.

All three taken with a truly off brand Arax 35mm Tilt and Shift. Honestly one of the best value lenses I have ever owned, and SOOOO much fun to use, and I've only scratched the surface of it.

Nice work with Niagara from the Canadian side.

Looks like you were there in mid day light which is even more impressive...I will probably also be there fairly early this time which has me worried.

... yeah, it was very close to midday, on a bus tour. Just enough time to take a ride on the Maid, run up to Horseshoe falls and snap a few frames, and then it was off again. All handheld, which can be touch-and-go for panoramas, but I'm getting better!

Perhaps one of my favorite grab shots. Taken yesterday while on Noonmark. I was set up for this shot without the bird but just packed up because my DOF wasn't quite what I needed (i was using a ultrapod and needed more height). Anyway, this guy flys in turned the camera back on (Canon G3) which takes 3 seconds and fired away. Unfortunately my settings were not perfect but I still like the shot.
This is the whole range in vertical JPEG. Came out darn well for a handheld using the cameras built in pano mode and lots of care. I also shot quite a few in RAW which might turn out a bit better (more DR). Obviously this was mid day light so I'm not expecting much difference after the RAW conversions.
And if you're interested the big 4000pixel version without border...the original is 16,000 by 2200 pixels

Heh. It would seem so! I particularly like that one since it proves that my hands are getting steadier - the shot was taken handheld at 27mm and no less than 1/2 a second!

Very cute!
I entered these three in a recent photo competition (Better Photography Magazine). Didn't win anything, but I like them anyway.
This last one probably needs a little explaining. It's the new Eleanor Schonell, or "Green" Bridge linking the University of Queensland to the other side of the Brisbane River. The little boat in the bottom corner is the now-redundant Dutton Park Ferry, and just visible under the main span of the bridge is the Dutton Park Cemetery. These kicked off the whole "past to present" theme I tried for here.

The NY skyline will never look right to me without the WTC. The best view is/was on the BQE just before/after (south of) the Brooklyn Bridge. It made having to go across the Verazano and into New Jersey (the Garden State) bearable. I still haven't figured out where they keep the garden in jersey but it's by far the biggest craphole state we have in the US. I hope you weren't exposed to NJ in your adventure.
Nice shots though, I like the pigeon mid jump on the steps. The pano as usual is great.

Thanks! Yours are, as usual, great as well. I especially like the last pair.
We did make a few forays into NJ. Rahway was, without a doubt, the most hick town I've ever visited. Rutgers University (in New Brunswick), on the other hand, is simply beautiful.
'Twas a fun visit. We've decided not to make the move there, though. Unfortunately, we decided this after Yang told me I could buy a 70-200 2.8IS and 2X teleconverter when we went back, and had safely gotten me out of the country. Now she knows how much cheaper they are there (at least $1000 less for the two of them), it's going to take me forever to convince her to let me get them here!
Anyway, a couple of other panos I thought came out well.
Statue of Liberty - due to the strange perspective and wide angle, the stitching software blew her out to look positively obese. I used Photoshop's Warp function to put her on a diet.
St Paul's Chapel in Columbia University - I may not agree with their theology, but damn the catholics know architecture! This is stitched from four shots, handheld at 17mm.

It's odd how much cheaper stuff is in the US for some reason, and thats before taxes. I know the Brits on these boards are always complaining that the pay US dollar prices but with a pound sign. Essentially double.
On the flip side, until the dollar got really weak, and the US retailers closed the loophole, I used to be able to buy all my climbing equipment from Barrabes or other european retailers for 50% of US retail after tarriffs and shipping. And I found the canadian price was the same as the US in amount but after the exchange rate about 20% less. For me it paid for a weekend trip to Montreal, to go up, drop $500 on gear, spend a few nights and get my taxes back and then head home.
Of course now that the Canadian Peso (it's a joke) is rising as the dollar continues to become worthless, Canadian retail gear is again more than US gear prices.

The girls on our tour posing on the old wooden bridge at Salzburg. I can't believe how clear that water is and how much of it runs down that river out of Lake Lucerne.
Ceiling decorations in a very old restaurant outside of Vienna.
I gotta send this one into Jay Leno.
Speaking of architecture, the Vatican's St. Peters Basillica is gob smacking. That dome is something like 475 feet high. The large ring around the base of the inside of the dome pictured here has a ballustrade with people behind it walking around up there. You can't make those people out because they are so far away. With the naked eye they are like ants. Then there is another ring of ballustrade way up there in the top of the dome with more people, even with my eyes straining I could not make them out. You just cannot fathom how beautiful this place is, it almost ranks as one of the seven wonders of the world.
Sorry for gushing, I am by no means a Catholic but I can apreciate wonderful works of art and this is one on a monumental scale let alone all the individual pieces of sculpture on display and part of the building. I never thought it would affect me in the way it had until I saw it. I was quite ambivalent about even going there. A trip to Rome is not complete without seeing what the Vatican is about as far as architecture and art goes.

First shot with the new Sigma 10-20mm. Good lens at half the price of the Pentax 12-24 (probably about 95% of the lens optical quality) I unloaded for funds for the 50-135 2.8 weather sealed that was just released.
Weather sealed (body and lens), stabilization, f/2.8 and USM for under $2000 total body and lens!!!! Try that with another brand!!

Haven't really taken anything new for a while, but here's a couple I liked from a few months back. Nothing special, just a trip down to the local reservoir to try and get to know my 100-300 lens a little better.
I especially like this one - it has a very Monet-esque feel to it.
Playing with the manual focus...
Finally, I only noticed this guy when the dragonfly I was tracking suddenly disappeared!

Yeah I have been chasing a decent lightning pic for years and managed to score this one at last.
Then I had to redo a pic that I failed on last time I was down at the Ashford Caves.

Go check out the lightning group on flickr, you will be blown away with how great those shots are. Makes mine look like it was taken by an amateur which of course I am but that is beside the point. They also have an excellent discussion on that group letting people know how to take better lightning pics.

Meet The Mutts.
What should have been a grea baseball day turned into 9 innings of watching the last placed Marlins beat the Mets into a bloody pulp (who were fighting for a playoff spot on the last day of the season after being in 1st place all year).
Not being a Mets fan I can tell you that it was painful to watch, imagine the opposing pitcher seeing your rightfielder dogging his double down the line, he sees this and legs out a legit triple. Basically that, and the fact that Glavine hit the pitcher to walk in a run in the first inning while giving up 7 runs pretty well covers the game.

All my panoramic shots are put together using The Panorama Factory - cool software. This one, for instance, is stitched from five shots taken with a pretty crappy old Olympus 3.2 MP point-and-shoot.

Thanks Pico,
I used two flash heads triggered by wireless. The key light was a vivitar 283 and the second flash (aimed at the picture) was a canon 430 ex. The 430 was snooted to illuminate just the picture and the vivitar had a cardboard gobo on it to keep its light off of the background wall. I lucked out with the cone shaped light pattern on the background wall, that was from an existing flourescent light fixture!

More on Lake Tahoe.
Animal Ark north of Reno, NV. This cheetah was as close as it looks and running 50+ MPH to catch a lure on the string. (edit) it was going 50+ before it passed the lure and turned around. This picture is towards the end of the turn-around as it's about to pounce. I have more of these pictures on my website (the image URL will show you the way if you want to see them).
I had the cheap camera set to take repeated pictures. Out of 50 pictures, this, the previous picture, and about 5 others came out good.

ok i have a cannon dslr xt rebel. i got like 3 lenses for it and am curious how do i take photos like the ones above where it shows like a long exposure but no blur of the objects walking or such. If it was photoshopped nm but i know you can take long exposure shots just not sure how you go about a longer shot than what the camera permits. Ie 6 sec.

The moonlight/snow shot was only a 30 second exposure (pre-remote shutter release days), and I just had both people stand as still as possible. So, there's no PSing, just subject manipulation.
I'm using the same camera as you too.
Also, you mention 6 seconds as a limit on shutter speed, but you should be able to do 30 sec without switching to bulb, and I think up to 2.5 hours on the bulb setting. I've only done up to just over on hour, though, so I can't confirm that.

LOL ...never took anything you said as an insult! Funny thing is, I've never used Photoshop myself. I find that Corel Paintshop Pro XI does all that I need, and for a fraction of the price.
As far as tutorials go, I just bought a couple of books.

Just a couple of shots from the holiday period..
Just playing around with Mt Cook (highest peak in NZ) as my background... Not a bad effort for a side of the road quicky
A bit of a change from the norm, first time using the new camera at the drags...not as sharpe as I would have liked but they came out alright. My ISO was perhaps a little high as well and shutter speed was a little slow for some of the other shots.
Another from the Waterfall shoot the other day.. one of my fav's

I hate the way RC.com resizes the photos, but anyway this is my fight/check collection from the last few weeks. What a sport, god bless Canada for having the balls to come up with something this violent yet beautiful, it's like Jenifer Garner in alias, hot but deadly.
Oh, and unlike other sports, the refs/linesman get in on the action. 4th one from the bottom shows that. Just like the wild west, even the law gets down and dirty.

wish I could shoot inside the glass...we don't even have portholes...by mid season it gets hard to find 6 inches of scratch free glass.
i don't envy you though, even with ISO6400 (and probably 2.8 or faster) it looks like you are struggling for light, and the lighting looks awful overall.
Good light makes things easy, I'm a little worried about the Broom County Arena in Binghamton for the AHL all-star game in 2 weeks. Only been there for a concert but it looked old and dim. Should be interesting.
Oh, might as well post a few shots from this weekend.

Thanks much! Nope, no modifiers at all, just played with the power and zoom settings. It is an easy place to shoot - they have a nice observation tower right behind the climbing, so east to move around, and to change the flash position. Also, had an on camera flash, but didn't do as well with using it for fill as I could have...

Wes, I see that you shot the gymnastics pix at ISO 1600. The noise looks minimal. Did you apply some noise reduction? If so, what did you use?

ISO 1600 is really clean on both my Mark III and 5d, as is 3200. Haven't had to break out the ISO 6400 yet, but just playing around, it looks totally useable. The mark III has about a full stop better ISO on the 5d once you are over 800 though. Aperture has some built in NR, and I used that on those, though you can really only see a little bit of difference, even at 100% on a 23 inch ACD. So, I doubt you would see much difference, esp. on web sized images.
Here are a few from last night - first on is ISO 3200, rest are 1600.

Yeah, the newer bodies are really nice with the high ISO, as long as your exposures are pretty good. Noise will really show up in the shadows and in the under exposed parts. Mark III is a aps-h, which is a 1.3 crop factor. The 5D is full frame. I have decided I really like those much more then the 1.6 crop for my style of shooting. Lets me use the 70-200 a lot more, and lets my wider glass act like wide glass. The only place that I miss the aps-c is for wildlife.

The noise issue on underexposure was always there.
It's funny people don't realize just how good the older bodies, even CCD were/are. The D1H still produces images that rival that of the newer bodies for web/news use. Only upon printing big do you notice limitations.
That said, I'm suprised at how few pixels you really do need. I started a smugmug account recently to simplify orders from some of the little league stuff I am shooting, and ordering test prints, of 8x10s with 1300pixels on the long end that look damn good. Believe it or not, if you're only printing to 11x14 (the largest size I offer for the kids sports), you don't need more than a D2H or even D1H. Or parelled the original Canon 1D. Anything over 4MP is over kill, unless you intend to crop the hell out of it. In that case, buy a lower MP used camera, and spend money on better long glass so you don't need to crop.
BTW, my take on this longevity of legacy digital cameras, out of camera noise reduction is superior in the last few years, Nik DFine 2.0 clears the noise based on colors I set which I select with a dropper, I then can tell it how much to reduce each selection, it also maintains detail. RAW converters are better, I only shoot RAW even for sports, and printers are better and now optimized for digital files. EZ-Prints (Smugmug) actually uses 3 different printers. The one for the smaller prints does print best at 300DPI (the fuji frontier which ran for a long time) but the next two (which are used for larger prints) actually use far less DPI. The printer used for the largest prints only needs 80-100dpi. Do the math, that means a clean file from my D1H can print a flawless 20in print and the 10MP cameras can produce 40in prints.

Yes, I guess Nikon is the first of the majors to quit upping the megapixel ante. Their top of the line dslr the D3 as well as the d300 has topped out at 12 megapixels, and are getting rave reviews because of low noise.
I have to admit I have been drooling over the D3, would produces low noise even at 6400. But everything I own is Canon. The D3 is pretty heavy though, so I probably would never bring it climbing or even backpacking, so its usage would be very limited for me...low light, fast action. But that being said, I'm very impressed with Wes's DIII pictures at 3200!

Nikon actually has 2 more FF cameras in the works. One to challenge the 1Ds and one the 5D. I expect those to have more pixels to compete with those cameras (or Canons next offering) since they are more aimed at studio and landscape photogs. I've seen a lot of complaints that the MP count at LOW ISO on the D3 isn't good enough for landscape/fine art.
Don't forget the D3 has a crop mode so while it's full frame it actually is more 1DMIII than 1DsMIII.
That said, it is good to see the MP race slow down. While the noise levels with a good exposure on the old cameras were very good at optimal (expose just to not blow out the highlights) the future will hopefully allow ISO1600-3200 to have the same .5stop latitude you get at lower ISO.

Josh - cool photos! Weddings are really fun when you have such a great location, and a cool couple to work with. Meet them when they were in the red a couple years ago.
Ption, yep KY is can be a very pretty place, no doubt. I ride my road bike through the middle of some very nice horse farms. Did you make it to the red?
Paul, Thanks much! I have really been off the 10fps a lot lately - going with single shot or with the low speed drive. But, there are some areas, like volleyball, that the speed really helps, as that ball can pass into and out of the frame amazingly quickly.

Another Week day at school... Learned the basic's of flash and controlling flash and ambeint light exposures... This week's assignement "Mixed Lighting"...
I think this set is my best so far, mainly because I think its more my eye/style than my tutors "art" style he encourages us to shoot.

Not bad. Are you limited to single exposures for this assignment? If not, you can have quite a lot of fun:
From memory, there's over a 100-fold difference in exposure time between the shortest and longest exposure in the above image.

The reviews of the G4050 are all poor because of the software, but when you find reviews where people went with the silverfast to run it, they are overwhelmingly excellent.
Anyway, I got the 4050 because batch scanning on the Scan Dual was just ridiculous, considering most of my film scans will be nothing more than web photos.
The G4050 can batch scan up to 30 frames of print film (negatives) and 16 slides. I got it with the idea of basically scanning a roll per day (hasn't quite happened, but when I dedicate myself to it, it's possible). Put them in at night before bed, or in the morning before work and when I wake up or come home I have 16/30 fresh digital images archived.
A lot of my film is over 10 years old, so it's already begun to see some color shifts. This is annoying to say the least and not really a reflection of the scanner quality.
For $270 with the Silverfast I cannot complain. Other options are the Epson V700 and V500.

Sweet!! Thanks for the info! One day soon I'll need to get those old pics "modernized" before the film decays. I used to use Velvia a bit and those pics are more valuable to me.

All of them had levels adjustments in the post processing stage and a couple had adjustments to color or saturation. I've only gone through about the first 800 photos of the 1600 I shot for that weekend. Lots of near identical images though since I was shooting on CH for most of the time and I had the battery grip on there so it bumped my frame rate up some.

Love the macros, not crazy about the star shots. On one hand they are pretty cool, but the other they look noisy.
What ISO and exposure did you use? Lens?
We've all been there, I was all big on building my wide angle lenses for a long time, and then I wanted longer teles. Now I'm convinced I need a 90mm 1:1 macro in place of my extension tubes and belows!!!
The just released 35mm 1:1 Macro I am testing/reviewing for the next month might end up being a purchase as well, if only the 70mm wasn't already ahead of it. If only $1100 grew on trees!!

Yeah, they're noisy all right. I kinda decided to go for the surrealistic look with them, so bumped the saturation and brightness right up. Experimental, as much as anything. There was no moon - good for stars, not so good for lighting up the foreground... anyway, I'll probably do some more playing around with the best of them, and try to find a more happy medium.
The lens was my 17-40 f4L, at 17mm and f4. Most of them are ISO 800 with bulb exposures (somewhere around a minute, but I was just timing by counting). A couple are ISO 1600 and 30 seconds. Bumped up something like 2 stops in the RAW converter. Looked ok on my home screen (although I was pretty tired, and it's not all that great a screen). Doesn't look quite so good now.
This is somewhat closer to what they looked like straight out of the camera:
Perhaps I'll find some time to do some masking and selective exposure adjustment.
I remember reading somewhere about instructions for adding Peltier cooling to a Canon 300D - would assuredly make a difference, but I think I'll wait until I can afford a spare...

I like the more natural looking HDRs, always been the case. The more obvious ones don't do much for me. However, nice set, they all seem well done.
I'm super backlogged on images. 10GB or so behind over the last few weekends.
Here are a few boring shots from my sisters graduation:
This one with the new Pentax 35mm Limited DA 1:1 macro...too bad I don't have $600 laying around to buy it, nice lens!!
This one with the K20D at ISO 2500...not bad if you ask me. It was fill flashed with a Sigma EF-500 Super DG but handheld at 1/60th second at 300mm (450mm effective). No complaints for an $1100 camera!!!
One from NH (2 shot stitched pano) with the Dynamic Range expansion feature of the K20D turned on...definitely adds about 1 stop to the highlights.

Full afternoon sun + ISO 100 + F2.8 = 1/8000, but still get remote ettl flash with the radio poppers! Just played around for like 15 minutes with them today an so far I am very impressed. The applications for climbing photos are great, as even in full manual mode, I can adjust the remote flashes power from the on camera master, or just use ettl with fec/ec.
Processed RAW with Aperture - contrast, saturation,etc. Pretty much the same all my images get - nothing special about the post work with these.

Wow, remote ettl at 1/8000. Its nice to hear the poppers work as advertised. This can be a great rock climbing photography tool No more restrictions on shutter speed on those high contrast bright, sunny days at the crag!

K20D, 21mm DA Limited @ f/13 with hyperfocal focus, 27 seconds @ ISO 160. Love this lens, just 1 inch thick!!!
Focus a little off with the shallow f/4 DOF. Have no idea how anything is in focus on an f/2 telephoto...

1:3(ish) macro shot with a Pentax K20D, 35mm DA Limited, f/16, ISO 400. This is a hell of a lens. Put my camera on an ultrapod right in the pond about 3 inches from this guy. Nothing like putting $2000 worth of gear in a pond. Part of why I'd never buy a camera body that sells for more than $1500, the stupid shit I do for a photo, will eventually bite me in the ass. Of course, I'm only testing the camera for a review
From Memorial Day (Yeah, I'm that far behind, I just posted this).
And here is where better equipment would have made the shot (you will not hear me say that often)...had I had Wes's kit this would be great, considering I was camped out on this shot I just needed more shutter speed (more ISO specifically).

A few embedded JPEGs from the RAW files. Really not bad quality, I believe they are JPEG 95 at 2MP. One thing I noticed is they have inherent noise compared to a stadard JPEG or a RAW conversion...but considering 1) JPEG is pointless, and 2) they take up no additional buffer or card space the embedded 2MP JPEG is a real bonus for camera to web expediency...
A few shots from Pittsburgh this weekend. Obviously growing up in NY I'm not easily impressed by "BIG" cities but Pittsburgh is a really cool town, even if it is located in the middle of nowhere. Here is a very small slice of 10GB shot over 2.5 days.

Very nice work la_rouche. "Urban art"!
Here's a shot of Jacki Florine tending to her foot during this years Death Valley Badwater Ultramarathon. She covered 135 miles in 45 hours in the middle of July!
This was shot with a Nikon D3 at ISO 12,800 @1/100 sec, f/3.5.
Although there is noise in this shot I was amazed I even got something. And yes, the moon was really in the shot!
Not only did she participate in this event she was her own foot doctor as well! This was shot with flash at ISO 200.

the pics were taken with either a 50mm 1.2 or a kit lense. all i imagine were taken at 1600iso. i cant remember any more details for the life of me. the pictures dont have any noise reduction done. and edited through picasa *at the time i didnt have photoshop

Got a little preview of one of new paintball courses going in at red river outdoors, in the RRG. So much fun a had to put the cameras up after a little while and just play! The first two are posed, the others are during live games. Was kinda cool to be in there with a wide angle lens and a flash stick, but not easy to get the photos I was wanting, so I switched to a longer lens. Will be giving the WA another go next time though...

Fun stuff! I like the 4th photo shot with the long lens best. By flash on a stick did you mean TTL on a monopod held up and out or something like that?
Seems like it will be hard to go wide and not get splattered when you go in close!

Wes all these off camera flash shots make me want go out and buy a wireless setup.
Here are a few from this past weekends trip to Tuolumne. For those shooting a non-full frame Nikon or Canon setup and are looking for an alternative to the really nice but really high priced Nikon or Canon wide angle lens check out the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8. Awesome lens in my opinion. I was very pleased with the quality I was getting on my first test run of this lens this past weekend.

Paul, yep - live games - got hit once with the WA lens, and flash setup. It is a canon flash with the Radio Poppers on a monopod.
Wireless flash is cool! Works OK with just holding it yourself, but really rocks when you have an assistant.

Ok... here's what I have been working on for the last nine weeks (I know you guys missed my weekly photo's )
This was our first major assignment at art school and I kinda bombed it big time. Chased another route for 5 weeks and then had 3 weeks left to find another idea and shoot it....
Anyway.. I won't post them all up (as there are 10 but only 9 online) but here are my favourite four. They are all part of the series called "Shadows"..

Way behind partly because I was running low on drive space, and partly because I had no desire to sit in front of a computer.
Well, solved the drive space issue, just added 1.5TB of space, now running over 3.5TB!!!

This trip to the tetons and yellowstone was quite a bit slower then the last three, photography-wise, but still had a great time. Even if they are too far out to photograph, watching and hearing 11 wolves howl is something special. Most of these are with a 500 F4, with and without a 1.4 TC, except the first few.

It was the fourth trip in 18 months! We usually work in a few days of climbing in Vedauwoo or lander as part of the trip. Trying to build a portfolio large enough to start selling images. Think we are just about there now though, or at least enough from the park for now. Yellowstone is the next best thing to going on Safari in Africa. In one morning, with some luck - you can get close enough to wolves, bears, elk, bison, etc to get great shots, even with something as short as a 300mm. It is kinda crazy though, and the last few trips it was getting pretty thick with the long lens people. That said - if you are into any kind of outdoor photography, you should defiantly try to make a trip out there. There are also plenty of amazing landscapes, I just suck at that kind of photography, so don't take very many.

Yeah, we were supposed to go to the Winds this summer but ended up bailing a week before. I was hoping to make a side trip through either yellowstone or glacier on the drive out.
Truth was Winds were second choice over paddling in Canada, and in the end, the cost was getting close to paddling which we decided against cause it was too much right now.
This year my brothers wedding/bachelor party is going to suck the life out of me, so no big trips either. Hopefully 2010!!
Not really a wildlife shooter but I figure if there is a fish in a barrel type place where you can get quite a few good shots in a short time, why not add some stuff to the portfolio.

Dude nice work on the church...I shot the same subject myself in colorado in 2005 on good old Provia!! Glad to see I wasn't the only one that found this place neat. fortunately you had better weather. it was dreary when I got out at dawn and not better on the drive back to camp. I knew the church had a lot more potential!!!

Those are lenticular clouds. Very cool (literally as well as figuratively). A Google Image search brings up some amazing specimens.

Not into the tilt DOF thing.
I have a Tilt and Shift lens and what I like about it is extreme DOF.
I use the shift to give me view camera like flexability out of my 35mm and digital SLR.
I'd love to see the shots without the DDOF though, they look cool!

Finally spent some time with my camera while out in Joshua Tree today. I was fortunate enough to be out with some friends who were more then happy to let me shoot some photos of them and play around with some stuff while my buddy got his redpoint of Rubicon.
I'm very new to the off camera flash deal and the first three were shoot with a single SB-800 using the Nikon CLS.

Thanks! It's very cool, actually - in value, the prize pays for that trip about twice over.
As for getting into the thread, that wasn't a bug in the thread, it was a glitch in the forum which has now been fixed.
