Beer Suggestion?
Can't Post

I need a beer. My wife does not like the hoppy/bitter/dark beers I like. I dislike watery beers and absolutely hate sweet beers (Fat Tire)

Can anyone suggest a good ctaft brewed beer available in AZ that isn't overly bitter or hoppy? It can be dark just not bitter or cloyingly sweet.
I, Myself love IPAs.

i don't know what kind of beer is available in AZ, but i'd like to trade spouses. I love IPAs, but the hubby seems to get allergies from hoppy beers. we're always arguing beer choices at the grocery. He always wants a stout or a porter

Blue Moon or Central Waters' Honey Blonde, which probably isn't available in Arizona.

A stout/porter sounds good although it can't be too dry. Maybe a cream stout that backs off the lactose a bit.

Well, IMO, the opposite of hoppy/bitter would be sweet and the opposite of dark is often watery. But it’s easy to throw around these terms and not really get anywhere.

Lets get down to the facts. Color, or darkness, is a factor of how much and what type of malt is used. The sugars stewed out of the malt is what the yeast eat, so in one sense darker could be called sweeter, though most would probably just say maltier. Of course, those people make up words to describe things they can’t explain. Brewers also put plain old sugar, molasses, and other adjuncts in for various reasons. This can often lead to a distinct sugary taste. I have no idea what New Belgium puts in Fat Tire, but they should stop, because it has a repugnant taste that Caughtinside informs me tastes like a horses ass.

Hops leads to bitterness, and is often put in to fight sweetness. As your wife doesn’t like hoppy, and you don’t like sweet, you’re trying to find a middle ground. Depending on your definition of “Sweet” this will either land you in a malty beer (of which the British make many fine examples) or something lacking both malt and hops, which is watery American beer.

Long-winded rant aside, I’d start with a good mellow malty ale. Not too dark, not too light, hardly any hops, just goodness. Caffreys was one of my favorites, but you can’t get it in the states anymore; not sure if you can get your hands on it. Boddingtons is similar. Honestly I don’t know the official category these are put in. But I’d look to London Ales – aka mild ale (Fullers has a good one), brown ales (Newcastle being the paradigm, though you can get them far less sweet – they use brown sugar), pale ales (ask someone else, not my beer), and most forms of stout; oatmeal stouts are very mellow yet flavorful (Samuel Smiths), as is a dry/Irish stout ( Guiness et al).

A cream stout, aka sweet stout, is about as sweet as they come. Though if you're up for it, try Mackesons (sp?).

Yeah, if you can find one that's not too sweet, ambers can be right tasty.

Traddad, have you tried 4 Peak's Kiltlifter? They make an 8th Street Ale that's fairly decent, too, but perhaps a wee bit too hoppy for the missus.

My problem with 4 Peaks' Kiltlifter is that it is NOT a scotch ale. It tastes exactly like a lager. Fine, fine, but they advertise it as a scotch ale. Try Moylan's Kiltlifter, or, better yet, McEwan's Scotch Ale to see the difference.

I'll try out their other selections (preferably on draft, next time) before I make a brewery judgment on 4 Peaks though.

A_B's selection of Newcastle didn't seem too bad. Although, Newcastle is definitely on the sweet side. Perhaps one of the Belgium or Abbey Style Ales would be good. North Coast makes Brother Thelonius, which is an excellent Abbey Style Ale. I also highly recommend Brother David's Double Ale from Anderson Valley, although they are a mite expensive. You can find these beers at a Whole Foods or AJ's in AZ.

1. Go to beer store.

2. Buy variety/seasonal pack of [insert local brewery]

3. she likes some, you like others

this works for me (i like dark, boy likes lighter beers).

I would say #9 is just as fruity as Fat Tire, in fact the two remind me of each other, so not sure #9 would be a good choice (though I really enjoy their current Oddnotion... it's dark and smooth and just really nice). You probably can't find that in AZ though.

I really hate fat tire. I like the company (what little I know of it) and even used to live in FC but the beer is so sweet it gives me indigestion. What's up with that? Do people actually like that? Sorry, but there are things that just shouldn't be sweet.
I bought a bottle of ranch dressing the other day (I had a hankering) and just about puked. Who thought sugar would go with ranch? Went back to the store and even found bleu cheese dressing with corn syrup as the third or so ingrediant. America is truely in decline.
The beer store thingie is a great suggestion, tho.

I've never been a fan of #9, MO it's a kids beer.

For VT beers

1. Ridgrunner any kind
2. Trout River, Oatmeal Stout
3. 3 Needs Triple Boch
4. Alchemist
5. The Shed Mountain Ale

Good luck finding any of these out west. Although I did find Magic Hat in Whitefish, MT.

As far as western beers my favorite is Rogue.

I also love PBR's, Hamms, and Shaefer. Speaking of which if you mix Shlitz and Hamms, you will get schlammed.

I enjoy both Fat Tire and #9, but I also find that I like some sweeter beers. Not, like, lambics, but I do enjoy a refreshing lightly fruity beer like both of the above on a warm day.

But then I pretty much like all beers. Except Blue Moon and the generic Light Beers.

My fiancee and I do a beer club at his work where a bunch of people chip in x amount of money and one dude buys a bunch of cases of various microbrews, then mixes them all up so you get a really big sampler of different types of beers. It's a nice way to try things without being stuck with a huge amount of something you might not necessarily like.

if its a beer from these fair breweries er ment shores, you need to be trying theakstons, Black sheep, Jennings, Abbydale, wentworth, green king and Sam smiths at a push if nothing else is avaliable,

Thanks for the suggestions but I only drink 'Murkin beer....otherwise I'm with the terrorists. Osama drings Euro beer.
Those are French....right?

nar, they are from the peoples republic of yorkshire with two exceptions. Jennings is cumbrian and greenking is southern so aye its nearly french

this works for me (i like dark, boy likes lighter beers).

I would say #9 is just as fruity as Fat Tire, in fact the two remind me of each other, so not sure #9 would be a good choice (though I really enjoy their current Oddnotion... it's dark and smooth and just really nice). You probably can't find that in AZ though.

Yes, at AJ's/Whole Foods you can get singles of beers from around the States/World, so buy a variety and have a taste-off. The selections, even here in AZ, have been good, but I haven't seen the #9 or Oddnotion.

Fat Tire tastes like what I imagine a yeast infection would taste like. I guess if that's your gig...

Try Blackened Voodoo Lager. Its very dark but is nice and smooth. It could be a good compromise. Edited to say that I think Fat Tire is aweful as well. I volunteered to drink the first one, was forced to drink the second one at a company party by my boss and I won't drink the third one without a fight.

Hey, T-dad?

If you can, get a hold of some Ju-Ju Ginger (Left Hand Brewing Company.) I *think* you can find it at the liquor store on University, just W of ASU campus, south side (near the Oreganos, but just East of there.)

You need to comeover to the dark side... the side where others will carry all your gear into the camp in exchange for you loading a haulbag with a pony keg and a couple 26's of Whisky to have in camp for the weekend.

I often have Oban, McCallen, or Dalwhinnie in mine.

Makes for a nice relaxing sit down on the summit when combined with a good summit cigar, or a nice pip.

Mine is still half-full from a quite winter. I like a nice fiery end to my winter summit malt :)
Perhaps that'll have to be polished off and replaced with a more mellow summer malt like Old Pultney or sommat.

As a style, see if you can find an Irish Red Ale from your favorite local brewers.

A touch of malty sweetness, well balance with hops, but not bitter. Among my favorite "session" beers.

Here in Western NY state, theres a great one called "Aviator Red".

I too would rather you blow a German Shepard before I would drink another budweiser. I just don't want to watch.

I'm not impressed by Bass. It's good in a black & tan? It just doesn't taste distinctive to me. Like you said, different taste buds.

True, Bass is not on my top ten but I love a good black and tan. I have had a few of those lately when we go out to eat.(however I do prefer Murphys over Guiness in a black and tan)

I, Myself love IPAs.

Beer really isn't all that good until you distill it--and age it in oak for about 12 years. Cool

If I ever decide to go completely alcoholic, I think I'll go for those little travel bottles. Then, I can truthfully say, "I only have a little drinking problem."

I'm not an alcoholic.. I don't go to the meetings.

It seems the majority of your jokes come from t-shirts.

I blame myself. My really lame joke goaded him into it.

Well....Here's a report from the weekend.
Had a couple of Zinns. Also had an IPA followed by the (thankfully) last Boddingtons.
DO NOT EVER DO THAT. Really.
The Decadent IPA was a bit sweet but palatable with it's hoppy edge. The Boddington's tasted like it had set out on a Phoenix loading dock in June for three weeks or so. Flat-ish, thin, with almost a rotted taste. Not the worst I have ever tasted (that goes to an attempted IPA where the brewer loaded it with sugar in a vain attempt to raise the ABV and produced something gaggingly sweet with no redeeming values at all)
If I want a sweet drink I would rather go with a real Margaritta with Herradura and Damiana (made in the Cafe Roka in Bisbee)

Clearly you have never had a fine Irish cider.
And I mean Irish, not "Irish"-made-in-the-states shit.
:), tasty stuff, but sometimes a bit sweet.

Oh, I know you're not tossing that shit on my lineage. Cider? Irish? pffffft. Sure, we'll drink it occasionally, but hell we'll drink rubbing alcohol if we're in a bind.

The sweet part is why most girls drink it. That's some foul shit anyway you look at it. Pfffft. Cider.
