"Dayum, Cleetus, you got the best Rendezvous they is."
That's what we hear every year in May at the New River Gorge, and this year, we'd like to hear you say it, too. Check (http://www.newriverrendezvous.com) for all the info. We have not raised the price of admission this year! It's still $25 for food, drink, clinics, camping and much more (comp registration is extra). Space is limited and once again, pre-registration is required. Word on the street is that hundreds of spaces are already gone, so don't wait until it's too late.
New River hospitality, trad, sport, bouldering and TR competitions, thousands of world-class routes and boulders, a beautiful venue, a rockin' par-tay and the greatest volunteers on Earth, who, BTW, get free admission and schwag (HINT). What more could you want?

They're asking only for volunteers from previous years. It's on the webpage somewhere. You can find it.
Hopefully, I'm in. I moved away last year and missed it, so I went ahead and registered for it this year in the hopes that it will force me to buy a plane ticket and take off work. My old rendezvous shirts are getting a little stinky; it's time to get a new one...

Thanks.
I'll probably be out there for a couple days prior anyway. My exams end on the 13th, at the latest so I'm going there or the Red for a couple days before I go home to work.
Already registered a few weeks ago. Last year was my first year and it was a blast. I'm still trying to convince all my friends to go, but none of them can seem to commit to it yet, but hopefully I'll also meet up with the group I met and climbed with last year.
Really want to go this year. My younger DD is 6yo now, so she will be able to participate in kid's activities, hopefully.
Jay, a question:If I am going with kids, do I have to register/pay for them separately, or are they covered by my registration?
I'm a dork, I couldn't figure out what it means when the Website says "Event T Shirt Kids ages 5 are free and do not have to register". (Taken verbatum from the registration form)
Under-5 are free, but older still need to register? All are free and the ones over 5yo get a T-shirt? I need a translation please.

I'm in! w00t! Already registered, waiting with bated breath for April 1st to register for a clinic.
I don't know if I'll be able to convince my friend to head down with me, so I'll probobly be looking for partners. Lena, if you're bringing the kids does that mean you'll be down with Kostik?
I have a question on the crack climbing clinics. Has anyone attended them? I've been trying to get better at jamming every time I go out but still get worked on certain sizes. The description says be able to TR 5.7 but I'm climbing 9s and some different style tens on trad lead. Is this clinic going to benefit me? Thanks.
Also, what's the deal with dogs? I'm going to the NRG as soon as school lets out and my dog is coming with. I plan on staying through the vous until the next weekend so I can't really leave him somewhere.

I took this clinic last year and we got on New Yosemite at Junkyard Wall , if you can get this route, you'll get more 5.9 crack practice than you can handel, on TR of course. Just get your instructor to leave quickly so you can claim this route. Good Luck

Sorry, I haven't been around much. I'll try to answer some questions and redirect the others.
1. Volunteers: we still need some, and it is NOT limited to previous volunteers. Email rendezvousvolunteer(at)yahoo.com, if you're interested in helping out. Word is that we may not need any more 12-hour volunteers (or we may -- I don't know!), but if not, we probably still need some folks to do a few hours here and there. If you're one of those, you won't get schwag, but you will be on the VIP list and you won't have to pay the $25 to register.
2. Children at the Vous: email Maura(at)waterstoneoutdoors.com. She's the final word on all this. I think, but am not certain, that kids 6 and up have to pay.
3. Overqualified for the crack clinic? I have no idea. Email Maura.
4. Dogs? No problem, but they have to be leashed. Even if NRAC is flexible on that, the Park folk won't be.
(This post was edited by j_ung on Apr 10, 2009, 2:33 PM)
If anyone is interested (re: kids): Maura says that kids under 12yo are free, and you don't have to indicate anywhere on the registration form that you are bringing kids with you.
There is a kids climbing clinic this year! Sounds cool!

Yes, indeedy. Odub is taking the kids climbing on Saturday! That dude is aces.
FYI, I'm helping with the volunteer coordinating now, 'cause my wife is slammed. AND, WE STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS! We don't need any more 12-hour folks, but we do need others to fill in isolates slots here and there. PM me here at RC.com or email me (rendezvousvolunteer(at)yahoo.com). You won't get schwag, but you will get in for free. If you've already registered and paid, we'll refund you cash when you get there!
Hey Everyone, Just wanted to put the word out there that I still have room in some of the clinics for the Vous weekend. You can check out the full line-up on the event website http://www.newriverrendezvous.com/clinics To sign up for a clinic, first register for the event and then email me your registrations at info@newriverclimbing.com

Laters!
Well, why don't you update the website so people know what classes are open and which one's are full.

Hennessey, Great idea, why didn't I think of that? FYI...The event website is updated almost daily where you can get all the latest news as well as info on which clinics are full and which are still open.
In regards to the clinics. As per the rules, I have registered for my one clinic, and one clinic only. But can you show up at the Hospitality tent and get on the waiting list to take a second clinic?
I only ask because right now it looks like I'm heading down solo and taking clinics is a good way to meet people/make the most of your day.
Also, I wonder if anyone is sticking around in the area on the Monday after the Vous? Since it's a holiday I was hoping to climb till early afternoon and I'll need a partner.

You sure can, just show up in the morning at clinic check in and if there are any slots available you can slide right in. Bring your climbing gear with you so you'll be ready to roll. Clinic check in starts at 8:30am at the NRAC Hospitality booth.
I bet loads of people will stick around to climb on Monday, I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding climbing partners.

Hey GG,
If you find yourself partnerless and don't mind dragging a gumby around (start cursing on hard 8's/9's, fall up easy 10's) I could be talked into sticking around until midday on Monday since I probably won't get a chance to climb during the event since I'll be busy breaking stuff in the NRAC tent....
-a.
That would be awesome!
And FWIW the New kills me. I can't crack climb worth a crap and I still don't do very well with the style of the sport climbing either.
When it comes to the New I'm pretty weak sauce myself.
I'll track you down at the gear breaking area during the 'Vous. I'll have to go through the booty pile at home and see if I have anything interesting to bring you too.

How would this event be as an introduction to the area? I mean, I realize it's not going to be a tour, but does it assume knowledge of the area? Would it be better to have been there before? If so, I suppose I could always just spend a few days there beforehand if I need to.

If you are planning to compete on Saturday, then yes, prior knowledge and climbing experience of the area would be helpful b/c you need to tick a certain number of climbs and you might want to strategize which area/areas would be best-suited for your goals.
Othervise, I cannot see why you would need to have any prior knowledge. If you are signing up for a clinic, I am sure the instructor will instruct you on how to get to where you need to go.
And if you are just hoping to climb with other people, going to the 'vous is a good introduction to the area b/c there would be lots of people around, and you'll be able to get advice from the regulars about where you should go to best suit your needs.

Of course! Just stop by Water Stone Outdoors, the climbing shop in downtown Fayetteville, they have tons of gear, clothing, guidebooks and loads of other stuff. You can get directions of their website. They're open 8-8 everyday. http://www.waterstoneoutdoors.com

EDIT- And pick up Spikeddem on your way. Make a weekend out of it, whydoncha?
I'm still trying. Might just have to try and hitch, but we'll see... If one more person gets pussywhipped into not giving me a ride, I'm gunna teabag them in the teeth.

Too bad Minnesota is kinda out of the way
Get to the I70, we'll hitch together. Not going to make it to the NRR, but we'll hit the red and the new.

Hey Aric....I didn't catch you on Sunday morning. I found the "special" sling that Nathan wanted me to give you. If you found it I hope you thought it was funny and not creepy.
And if you did find it creepy blame Nathan. That's what I do anyway.
Anywho, it was great to meet you, and too bad I couldn't find you to see if you wanted to get a bit of climbing in on your last day. It might have been just as well because Sunday was a day of a lot of hiking and a bit of mighty flailing by Adam and me. Hope to catch you around another time!

Double Trouble.
A Rendezvous legend that we all hope returns year after year.
Hey Eric?Aric it was nice to meet you and I think everyone really enjoyed the pull testing equipment. I feel certain that next year you will be a lot busier since the word is out.
Wadda Rendezvous! I'm still in pain! Aric, the gear pullin' is something we seriously need to have every year! But um, yeah, a net cage or something would be wise.
Crazy stories abound this year...
1. Some poor fella got drunk and fell of the slackline, possibly breaking his collar bone. Sometime in the middle of the night -- in a pea-soup fog -- he then got up, strolled out to Rt. 19 (a 4-lane highway), turned right, walked over The Bridge, past Fayetteville to a hotel and checked in... all without telling anybody. The next morning, his friends were panicked and we had to call 911 to file a missing person report. Right after the NPS police showed up, he strolled back in.
2. Some asshole and his wife and/or girlfriend made the rounds stealing shit from sponsors, including a set of Big Bros from Mal at the Trango booth. But he was fingered and busted, and almost all the gear was returned to its rightful owners, after being found in his tent. He and his drunken ho were kicked out of the 'Vous the next morning after sleeping it off. Mal's got his name. I can't remember it. Bryan something.
Awesome party! I got there when it started raining on Saturday and saw Aric break some stuff (awesome!) I didn't get a lick of climbing in, but enjoyed the night immensely. You guys do an awesome job! Hopefully I'll be of more help next year.

Geez Santana... You're Tuna? Never thought to ask if you're on RC and I remember seeing that xray a while back. Looking through your posts it seems we've chatted about a bunch of things over the years... Nice to finally meet you!
The RC.com connection can strike at anytime. Though I think it would be weird to ask everyone you meet at the crag if they're on here.
In case you didn't realize, Santana, we were chatting at Jay and Wendy's on Sunday night.

Wow!!! How did I miss that story?
Have you and Wendy regained your sleep balance yet, or are you still running on borrowed time? :)
And yes, GG, it was nice seeing you again, and nice meeting you, Aric!
Now Jay let's set the record straight about how you threw your back out. For those who did not witness the mighty strugle between Jay and the 30lb bag of unpopped popcorn. Let's just say the bag won. Have you gotten around to actually getting the bag completly inside the house?
And here I was feeling bad, thinking that it was all the trash bags that Jay had to heave out of his truck and into a dumpster that caused the back problem...
Do you think you would still have some of that popcorn by Christmas, jay?

Hey Granite_grrl it was nice to chat with you two Sunday night. Sorry I was so tired. I think we all were worn out. Hope to see you two again next year.
I think Jay will still have a bit of that popcorn for the 2011 Christmas.

Someone needs to start a book about all of the crazy stories. Including the guy in last year's band who took a 20 foot fall off of a cliff in the woods. Poor guy was just goin' for a piss.
As for #2... I caught the news about that on the NRR website. Bryan Newman from Morgantown with a wife. Sounded quite familiar and I'm 99% sure it was this guy: WVUCLMBR. What a douche and so glad he was caught.
I remember at NRR #5 I found an iPod in the parking lot and felt like such a good samaritan when I turned it in, only to find out someone stole the "lost & found" box later that night!
Sucks I missed "Double Trouble"...

dang, the guy deleted all his personal info on his profile! I remember that he used to post quite a bit here a year ago or so...
Hey camhead, I'm pretty sure that was him. Drunk as hell and totally working in cahoots with his wife. I'll never forget sitting in the ranger's office giving a statement and listening to him raving at me, "I can't believe you're doing this to me, man. I'm you friend on Facebook!"
So on Saturday morning I went on to his Facebook page and posted the arrest report. Three days later his Facebook page was shut down.

Of course I did it from my iPhone. I was waiting for my clinic group to assemble when I had my flash of insight. Hey, I would love to meet the real climbers from Morgantown. I'm sure you (they) are a great crew.
