Ok, we gotta do this.. Who's in favor of a killfile stats page? Most recently killed... Killfile King, Most often killed... Ressurrected, most often unkilled... Top Ten killed ... Top Ten killers ...

I like it, I think that could almost do a better job than the old rating thing at letting people know about users on the site.

nb. I whacked a lot of youse's killfile lines because I had used the wrong datatype for the damn OffendingUserKey in production. Oh well. Just whack them again next time you get a PM from them.

I just know that if RC.com has a "killfile" page that shows who's been most "killfiled", we'll quickly see a contest for the "winner". Now that single PMs can be sent to multiple users with one click, it wouldn't be hard to spam the crap out of other users to try to win the title.

yep, and they could be very proud of that, and they would deserve it, and new members of the site could see who acts like a moron the most. I think the only way to find out the really bad problems with this plan is to do it. If, like the old rating thingys for users, we don't like it, it can be removed.

I don't know what issues of resource use this might involve, including what might happen if the PM system gets inundated with spam PMs. I guess the logic of the self-serving moron theory is okay, but not at the expense of site resources.

For what it's worth, I concur that a Top Ten Most Killed, etc would be a bad idea and would condone unfavorable behavior here on the site. Though, I'd be down for bringing back q-votes.

I didn't mean to suggest posting who killfiled who - but aggregate numbers as to who was killfiled the most? It would give newbies a clue who to ignore in threads, or a place to check for known trolls and flamers if the get a nasty PM.. .. Transgender Killers - most of killfile'd alternate profile for same user

Yeah, so you can treat those people with the type of disrespect you treat other people that you know don't like you ?!? I'm not too keen on the feature, but I really like it's current implementation. If peeps don't want to read stuff, they don't. Figuring out who doesn't want to read you or how many people don't want to read you or how many people that people want to not read more than they want to not read you... IS ALL EGO STROKING. This post was dedicated to those who have killfiled me. I love you all.

No Cody... I think everyone should be able to see who is "ignored", not just the Admins. I can see so it, so I don't need it. I have been killed by one user so far, for "busting" his multi-user IDs I suppose. Nice unprovoked flame attempt though.

You childen should take your petty flame wars to Community, both of you. I suggest Tim extends the killfiles to posts, as well - and I'll be more than happy to have adam killfile Lox, and vice versa. Maybe then the children around here stop bickering at eachother. - d.

Lox, No - it's when you whiny bickering children disagree with EACHOTHER, that it's a flame war. I'm tired of you bickering about adam all the time - and I've told adam, I'm tired of him bickering about you all the time. Don't you two have anything better to do, like climbing rocks? Sauron. First off, bickering is an activity 2 people at odds engage in. Adam cannot bicker "about" me, unless he's doing it with other people. Since my little break, I have not complained one bit about Adam. I tend to make jokes to people based on a mutual history. I challenge you to find more than 1 instance SINCE my hiatus in which I attack rrrAdam maliciously. Now, to this thread: I wouldn't just up and flame someone for no reason. I really wouldn't. When I see someone like Adam state an opinion like "make killfile lists public" I question the motive. Even he himself says that the person who killfiled him was someone who's second identity he exposed. This is the sort of maligned use of information that users don't appreciate from site admins. I di not support giving the site admin MORE information that he can just use to abuse the usership with. Call this "child-like feuding" or whatever you will, but that IS my position on the matter and it has everything to do with the dynamics of killfile, it's implementation as it is on the site now and rrrAdam's past use of sensitive information. I rest my case and will say no more, as this isn't a "flame war" so much as a concerned user raising a valid point... and I know people are watching me here, so I would be best to aviod flame wars with those in power who obviously don't like me. If I respond to this thread again, it will only be to hold you to your offer to buy someone a beer if they could explain the term "homonecromanics," which I did. I'll take a pint of Arrogant Bastard and the 30 minutes of good conversation that comes with it...

Lox, Quote: First off, bickering is an activity 2 people at odds engage in. Adam cannot bicker "about" me, unless he's doing it with other people. According to dictionary.com: [blockquote] bickering n : petty quarrel [syn: bicker, spat, tiff, squabble, fuss] [/blockquote] You two engage in petty quabbling, and thus - you two bicker. Quote: Now, to this thread: I wouldn't just up and flame someone for no reason. Adam is an admin, he already has access to this information. So do I. Stating that he would like the lists to be public, empowers (as in information awareness) you, the users - not us, the admins. Quote: If I respond to this thread again, it will only be to hold you to your offer to buy someone a beer if they could explain the term "homonecromanics," which I did. Wrong. I was referring to my *plonk* with the offer - not your homonecromaniacism. - d.

Dom. Why are you so pissy this morning ?!?! You don't need to be all animositous to me... duh ! I only stepped up to your challenge of buying someone a beer so maybe we could go out and have a good time. I mean, it's not like I really ever see you at the crag or even the gym or anything, so I thought you might want to do something with a flesh and blood rockclimber... Was I wrong in your challenge ? Did I not earn the beer rightfully ? Quote: hishopper Homonecromaniacs - List of all those who have killfiled themselves sauron *plonk* $2.50 and a cold beer that Tim's the only one who'll figure that one out. I think I did. BUT IF YOU CAN TELL ME WHY I DIDN’T, I WILL BUY YOU A BEER. (Or other pansy-assed I don’t drink alkamahol style beverage of your choice… “A shirley temple for the big guy here, please…) And as far as Adam and my “bickering” goes… we don’t. Granted, we don’t see eye to eye on things either. We disagree about stuff and razz each other a bit in that, but when you and he make it out to be some terrible feud that is perpetrated on the people of this board, you insult them and their intelligence… Kinda like how when Adam makes having multiple aliases out to be the bain of the nonanonymous messageboard scene and exposes them… it’s a slap in the face to those who are trying to have harmless fun. AND WHAT IF THOSE PEOPLE REALLY HAVE MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES ?!? You guys are ALWAYS all about how vast and diverse your usergroup is… why not make even the polyconscious feel welcome ?!?! Apparently, at least one person agrees with me enough to use the killfile button, eh ? (Segue back to the TOPIC.) Either way, I still don’t support ANYONE being able to look at my killfile list. The decision to ignore someone is not something that should be made public, if for no other reason than: If the killfile feature was implemented partly to stop certain users from being harassed by other certain users, making the killfile lists public would GIVE THOSE OTHER, HARRASSING USERS MORE FUEL FOR THEIR IRE. I think it’s safe to say that if anyone is an expert on this subject, it is Doosh. And I am the source closest to him… I understand the need for admins to be able to manage killfile lists. I have said I really like the killfile feature as it is implemented right now. Please do not publish these lists. As someone who is prolly pretty high up on the list, I can say that it would only serve to create more animosity and anger. Is that what that feature was about ? Or was it about the EXACT OPPOSITE ? Aside to Sauron: Boldering tonight… you in ?

First off: EVERY DISAGREEMENT IS NOT A FLAME WAR. Hey, guess what ? People disagree... there can be a healthy exchange of information between people on 2 sides of an issue without it becoming a "flame war." I see no flames between the admins here. I see some stated concerns by all parties. I think Dom and Tim make some good points about how THEY FEEL without being insulting or accusatory. I hope these concerns are addressed. And that is all I am going to say about that. About your last point, Adam... (which is the main reason I am replying, and I AM ON TOPIC !!!11 OMFG !!) If I misunderstood your intent, I apologize. However, I think that publishing any such list or making public any system of ranking will encourage either anger on the part of the listed members or competition between THE VERY SORT OF PEOPLE YOU HAVE ALWAYS HAD A PROBLEM WITH. I mean... wouldn't it stand to reason that such a public list would encourage the Matt Parker-like behavior that you felt was so wrong as to break the law to guard against. I am against any information to be published about the killfiles. As someone who is annoyed, angered and burdened by the presence of trolls, Adam, I would expect you to be against anything which would bring more potential trolls to the site... [backhanded]Of course, you never really realized your implication in the existence of Doosh, now did you ?[/backhanded] And if you did... you couldn't tell anyone now could you ? Releasing too much information concerning private matters designed to reduce the negativity on the site could have an opposite outcome than the most desired. SAU. BEER + CLIMBING AT MCK TONIGHT. IF YOU CAN'T BRING EITHER OF THOSE, BRING HOT CHICKS.

Lox, Quote: Was I wrong in your challenge ? Did I not earn the beer rightfully ? Quote: hishopper Homonecromaniacs - List of all those who have killfiled themselves sauron *plonk* $2.50 and a cold beer that Tim's the only one who'll figure that one out. I think I did. Wrong. My post should have read: [blockquote] *plonk* ($2.50 and a cold beer that Tim's the only one who'll figure that one out.) [/blockquote] .. as the *plonk* in usenet terms, often is the sound that someone will reply to a post with, before they killfile the person they are replying to. I would expect Tim to know this, but very few others. So no, I was not referring to the homonecromaniacism of hishopper's (or yours). I'll take either a Newcastle Brown Ale, Black & Tan, or Screwdriver. As for bouldering, I'd intended to hit Bull Creek (conveniently close to my home, and you'd mentioned a few problems I thought I'd work on) - and I have a pre-existing engagement at 7pm, so it'd be annoying to drive to McK, and back. On the other hand, if I can sneak out of work early, I might be able to run down to McK for a while, provided I can get out of there by 6-6:30-ish. (I don't remember how bad traffic is back up 183, etc - I have to be up north by 7-7:15pm) - d.

I stand corrected regarding the plonk. Let's hope they have Newcastle at the Gingerman. How does next week work for you ? Regarding the deletion: I stand corrected again. I guess I came across as a little harsh in that post, but I am the one who looks stupid, standing alone in the middle of the room with my dick in my hand... lol. And barring a collosal accident on 183, you should be fine getting to North Austin in 30 from Mck... either way, you should come out sometime. I think the next time we're going to posse up is TOMORROW, so it's not like this is a one shot deal. If you really want to go, I'll pm you directions as to where we'll be. It's possible that we'll be downstream from McK proper...

On one hand, I think the publicity of killfile stats will promote competition and cause some battles on the site (which we already have a lot of), and on the other hand I think that it will uncover the menaces to the site, and what is one more battle on site? I am leaning more in favor toward the former, I think. Now, this a dumb question I know, but when someone has been killfiled how do they know? Are they notified only when they try to send an pm or, do they have something in their pm window area that states "you have been killfiled by:" with a list of killers or whatever? (the answer to this has probably already been posted somewhere, so sorry if that is the case) -Rachel [ This Message was edited by: spider_woman on 2003-01-22 13:13 ]

Rachel, the simple answer: They won't know they've been killfiled. The slightly longer answer: The purpose of killfiles is simple - to gag the offending person - they won't know, unless they find it out somehow (Send a PM, expect answer, and not receive any answer, etc) - d.

I agree with Lox and the others that the Killfiles should be private. I know of one instance where the feature proved EXTREMELY helpful (in fact, it was the reason the feature was started in the first place)... and if the information got out about who killfiled who, serious consequences could arise. And I mean more serious than an Internet flame war. PLEASE, keep them private. Leave the feature as is.

daisyfay, As it currently stands - if you don't get a response to a PM, one of the following has happened:
- I've forgotten.
- I've down-prioritized you, and it's not your turn yet
- I'm ignoring you on purpose
I didn't need any killfiles for that... It's called "self control" - d.

Quote: PLEASE, keep them private. Leave the feature as is. Given that it ain't broken, I have no intention whatsoever of 'fixing' the lack of punitive features in the killfiles. Rest assured that I will probably get around to encrypting the entries in the database, however, since the only thing I believe killfile stats are useful for is as a counterweight to forum postings (eg. someone who starts a lot of flamewars, but is also killfiled by a lot of people as a result, isn't going to get the same 'points' recognition as someone who actually posts useful content... and that is precisely where aggregate statistics come in handy.) Since Eric's traveling and I'm about the only person writing serious new code, this thread is less of a discussion than an evaluation: I ain't gonna change how they work. Thank you for your feedback, everyone. Now let's move on to 'discussing' points. See forthcoming (and sure-to-erupt in flames) points thread. I'm thinking that forum killfiles should be deployed right about when the upcoming points war begins to devolve apocalyptically, for maximum statistical veracity...

For the record, LOX is due one Sam Adams (or beer of lesser value if prefferred) - he correctly chose the term to match the idea I was trying to convey; AUTONECROMANIACS, or those that killfile themselves. I thought HOMO (self) would convey the same thing, but that shows my mastery of the Greek language! (Or english, for that matter)

Hishopper, Trust me, you'll loose the arrogance competition here. Now, go read my post on Page 4 - which in DETAIL explains what I was giving the Beer out for. No, it was not for him figuring out what "AUTONECROMANIACS" meant. It was for what my "*plonk*" meant. Dumwit. - d.

Is there a way I can tell if I have been Killfiled by someone? I have not tried it on anyone so do not really know how it works.
