Darkside's ENFORCED roadtrip

Well a little under five hours ago I got some news with mixed feelings. I was called up to the office just before finishing work to find out I was the winner of a no expenses paid vacation.....I am now laid off.

As I listened to the news I had two thoughts.......
1. This is BULLSH!T
2. ROADTRIP http://smilies.crowd9.com/...alhappy/luxhello.gif

So what now? well as I have no more money coming in it's time to get back to dirtbagging. This weekend I will continue with my plans and head north for the weekend before returning and putting things in order.

But then what? Will south be too hot? Is heading east a good option? Should I explore further north? Do I drive or could I possibly find a cheap airtix? What wonderful new crags await me if I could score a really cheap tix? What old friends could I look up?
Oh the opportunities!!!!! :D

Money may wind up as an issue so I guess a multi month trip is out and climbing partners may become a factor in where I go or who with. It is also just a temporary layoff so they could call me back anytime....except during a crux, I wouldn't be able to answer the phone :P

So what should I do......decisions, decisions. http://smilies.crowd9.com/otn/confused/qusans.gif surprise me.

EDIT: For my latest antics or where I am looking for a partner for tripping to, check the last page.
Tripping partner needed. See page 4.

First I'd like to say I'm sorry for your misfortune. I am a soon to be college graduate and I know how bad the job market sucks. On the other hand, just like you, I decided to go travel instead of cry about my sh*tty situation of not getting any damn jobs! I would recommend Alaska to you. This time a year, so I hear, the weather is great and it is just far enough and unique to call it a full blown experience. Just my $.02

Writing a travel/climbing piece could pay all of it for you! :D Then you can have your expenses paid-by travel bureaus, establishments, yada yada. But it depends on the publication; some don't let you do that because it might bias the article, but if it's a travel mag to begin with, then you can do what you want if they don't pay it for you themselves. :)

I'm certainly biased, but you really can't go wrong coming out to the old CA. I mean, talk about the summer selection. You've got the E. side of the Sierra's, Tuolumne, Lover's Leap, Tahquitz, Yos Valley, The Needles and tons over other 4 star trad spots. Plus killer sport climbing all over the place. Pretty unbeatable!

 Squish had occurred to me, but timing may be the issue. Why can't I head to NS? don't you like me anymore :P I would thoroughly recommend Sorrows End for some beautiful granite lines and amazing views. Try to find a local to get you to the crag though as the guidebook details an approach over private land, also once up into the barrens, the crag is not visible until after you go over the height of land.
If you try the bouldering at Peggys Cove then stay away from the ocean as frequent rogue waves devour the odd unsuspecting tourist each year. Granite_grrl will also be back in NS next week for 3weeks so contact her for a partner/tour guide.

 Maybe it's you that's stalking me on MY trips, waiting for me to contact the elusive krillen. I saw him at Nemo last week but where were you? 8)

Hey Grant, Skippy just bought a new car, has a tonne of vacation time, and an itch to go roadtrippin'.

I'd go but my summer/Fall/winter are all booked up.

Hey....did I tell you guys I'm getting married in October! That's why I can't hit Jules place for Rumney in Oct.

Yeah but being able to fly could make for a cheap roadtrip......climbing may be a little less interesting with no need for a belayer though. :?

Anyway it's looking like my options are
1. Fly out to explore some Yorkshire grit and see my mother(not seen her in nearly two years).
2. Fly out to Calgary and trip through the Bow Valley, then onto Skaha, Squamish, or wherever.
3. Drive the car around a bit dirtbagging the north and east.

I actually came online to start doing some price checks on airtix. 8)

:( Ouch, flights to the UK seem to be upward of $800cdn. That puts last nights ideas of a side trip to Chamonix in a dim morning light.

Looks like the dirtbags car and clymbers couch may be getting more consideration.........

Unless someone has suggestions for cheap flights

I'd first like to say sorry to hear about the layoff Darkside... However I do know how you feel. Our company is currently going through a slow period not to mention we lost a contract renewal. So we had to lay some people off. When I was told I thought for sure that I was going to be one of those people. When I came in on the Monday I was surprised to hear that I was not one of the people. I was so happy that I wasn't laid off, but when I thought about it I realized I could have had the entire summer off and part of the fall to do some climbing so I take your layoff as a good thing gives you more time to climb ! :D I say enjoy and have fun

hound: thanks dude. I'm actually hoping this temporary layoff doesn't end too soon, it's great to have some time but the money side sucks. Things like this can be like new doors opening, grand adventures and new directions could be awaiting.

If my travels take me your way I'll see how bad work is screwing with your climb time and maybe we can do a route or two.

I just have to remember to get some Mr Noodles next time I get groceries.

Hey good luck on your trip.. If you drive through Dallas and need a place to crash for a night or two. Let me know we have an extra room and wall in the garage.

I would recommend Leavenworth or squamish for a destination.

My bro and I will be pissing time away up in Colorado, Wyoming and Squamish later in July. You are welcome to hook up with us.

Email or PM me.

Fawkes: Nah I WON'T be spending my time in Calgary/Lake Louise/Canmore in early August. So you really WILL miss me.

Grant my suggestion to you is grab Skippy and got to NS. It's cheap, 16-19 hours, you could hit up New England on your way there/back and the dacks too. Skippy's got a rack, rope, new car and an undieing desire to roadtrip.

Lordy knows what will happen while I'm away

I will be heading out either tonight or early tomorrow for Weir and Val David Quebec and Bon Echo on the way back. I will have my cell with me if anyone needs to get me.
Krillen: could you have Skippy call me, I'll PM you my number. If he can't head out right away I have other plans too for after.

Scottcody: the trip you're making sounds sweet but I'm stuck in the east for now. Hope to make a trip to Squamish and Skaha soon if my luck holds and I find a cheap fare. I'll see if you're around when I do.

Got stuff to do but I may get chance to check in again later.

Bon soir dudes,
In Quebec watching that Osbournes show, what a set of retards but what the hell........
Climbed some routes at Mont Rigaud today and two rare things happened. I didn't place a single piece of gear, and I actually sweated right off a hold and fell. Hot as hell but the swim in the pool later cured that ........ and a couple of beers.

Onto Weir next and probably no more internet access. No call to return to work yet :D

Back home once more and already thinking of where to go next. Maybe a little local stuff and then down to the Gunks.
Quebec was fun, got to meet up with a number of old friends and some new ones and despite some rain, got some nice time on the rock. Will do a report later but heading back to bed again for now.

Well Quebec was good with new climbing at Rigaud, Weir, and Val-David to add to my travels. I also got to spend a day east of Quebec on a wetland study with an ex-climbing buddy, that's ex-climbing, not an ex-buddy. A sad state of affairs caused by his current attentions. I'll tell you, I looked around at one point and the area was flat as a pancake; nearest to verticality was the piles of peat moss being farmed. Mont Morency Falls down the St Lawrence looked mighty fine though...roll on ice season... :D

Anyway I'm stuck at home and a trip to the Gunks would be nice for next week
ANYONE WANNA HIT THE GUNKS.........

grant - i'll be in and out for the next few months, but if you make it to colorado you can stay at my house whether i am there or not. i live 10 minutes from eldo, boulder canyon, and the flatirons, and an hour from rocky mountain park, lumpy ridge, the south platte, etc. all the trad you can handle, and partners are easy to find(especially if i am home). also not so damn humid as back east, and if its hot you just go higher up.

I'm having trouble getting on the RC.com site so e-mail or calling my cell is the best way to get me. Money is still OK and no recall to work yet :D

I have stuff tying me up for weekends till mid August but would still like to do a longer roadtrip west by car or still hoping for a cheap plane to England. I've actually not been doing much climbing lately but having a blast anyway. I got up to the area north where I do some ice and did some rock and some tubing on the lake.

Works out..... climb on.

Whoops...fell asleep
I was supposed to be packing but sleep won. I just printed some directions and should get back to getting the hell out of dodge again. Heading for Kamouraska this weekend although the weather is looking iffy, still at least I'll be on the road :D

Upcoming attractions: Gunks, Daks, Lionshead, Bon Echo, and Devil's Rock are calling. I'll get around them eventually, lack of work permitting  ....and more, I'm open to suggestions. Send me a plane ticket and I will lead or belay for you in some exotic location :P

So I get to Kamouraska which is some 10+ hours from home and apart from the other ten people in the group I'm not really expecting to know anyone. As we do the first climb, this dude looks over at me and asks me if I was at Weir a couple of weeks earlier. So much for incognito. That krillen will be appearing soon I thought :P or will it be crazylikeafawkes :?:
Well despite some rain here and there we got plenty of climbs in but I never placed a single piece. This turned into a wet trip on the lighter side but what amazing rock. Within a couple of hours of rain ending it would be dry and was even climbable in light rain. Does anyone know what sort of rock type it is :?: It has a texture somewhat like granite but must be sedimentary judging by the formation and awesome pockets. The routes DB lists it as quartzite but is different to quartzite I have climbed on before. I'd love to know.

So I was looking at airtix to Britain again but still expensive. I really want to take off somewhere though and western Canada is calling. I am thinking of driving out but would anyone be interested in going and sharing costs. I would be stopping by the Rockies, Skaha, Squamish, and would likely head down the coast to Smith and the Cascades. Coming back could include City of Rocks or Devils Tower. If this interests anyone please post or PM me and maybe schedules etc will match up. I know some folks along the way so some free accomodation could be up for grabs, even a bed here or there.

Heh. Grant, work told me I had to take a mandatory week off from work by Aug 31st.

Unfortunately, with my ankle still not recovered, I'm suckin' it with regards to climbing... BLAH.

Anyways, and stuff.

Wow it is over a week since coming in here. :o
Dom:if the ankle is up for some climbing feel free to look me up. If not then maybe I will see you at Rumney 2.0 for more jackass antics.

I think this is my 700th post.

Since my last Quebec jaunt, I've had the chance to introduce a couple of guys to the joys of the dark side. Rain tried very hard to mess with that but was pretty much unsuccessful. OK we had to spend the first day out at the rock completely ground bound under overhangs but they went home that day already in love with the joys to come. The second day I scared the crap out of them both when they realised the implications of placing their own pro. We were thwarted yesterday by some wet rock but not stopped until late in the day by a downpour that left us all soaked not from having just got off a climb in time but rather from the bushwhack out. The shortened day left them with a new experience of "Dancing in the Dragons Jaw". I'll not rag on them too much for their overhang experience while on TR  even though I lead it.

I have also been climbing up in the Bruce with one weekend involving no more climbing than trying a home woody followed by water skiing and tubing. I'm going to blow my own trumpet here and shout about how despite not having tried much water skiing, that having been over a dozen years ago...... I got up on the skiis FIRST TRY.
I even fell off them shortly after without trying.

This past weekend I did get out to climb at Lionshead, though after more rain. On Saturday night, a buddy opened his property for a weekend and hosted his annual party. I had a great time, talked access issues briefly, drank a couple of pops, and cooked with fire. There were wax bombs galore and when I hit the sack at 3.30am there were bodies passed out and many others going strong. Strangely it was fairly quiet when I got up at 6.30am :?

Well airtix are still looking expensive so I am really wanting to take 3-4 weeks to travel west. If anyone can join me to share driving duties and costs I would welcome the company and climbing partner. Maybe I can hook up with some other RC.com'ers along the way too. I'm looking at the end of the month - beginning of September.
Anyone wanna roadtrip :?:

I think Oregan will be as far down the west coast as I will be likely to make it, but if you wanted to head up the coast from Cali, I would be happy for more RC.company.

Tentative departure date is around the 21st August. Anyone want to join in for part of the journey at least?

Well I had some news today about an important meeting about Access matters being postponed. This leaves me able to hit the road a day or two earlier. Right after I spend a bunch of $$$ on the car.
It's the car that has been taking my money lately, well that and tickets. I just had to replace the alternator, got a cracked windshield, along with getting two speeding tickets and a parking ticket. The alternator cost nearly $400, while the windshield I hope to get fixed at the cost of the insurance. I got rid of one ticket by going to traffic school, another was dropped by 28kph so there was only a small fine and no points, and the parking ticket was waived because I was parked in a lot on Access Committee business. :D
I still have to get the car serviced, a $200 exhaust problem fixed, get the emmissions test done(fingers crossed), and renew my licence stickers.

The last couple of weeks I have been doing some climbing in Ontario and last weekend I got what may be a first ascent. Between the speeding ticket on the way there and the big red dyke at the top of the climb I decided to call the climb Redlining It.

I'm still looking at that long drive across the prairies on my own though if anyone has an urge to join me :!: ......Please

So I hit the road late and compounded that by stopping off for a burger with Ontario_guide. It was my first time travelling through northern Ontario and quite different to what I had imagined. Driving along through the hills, you crest a hill and start to drop down around a bend and  BOOM. There is yet another big ass piece of rock.

The display of northern lights was pretty big too although not the multi-coloured show of legend. I had spent two days on the road and was still in Ontario :? Sheesh who made this country so big.
The third day on the road saw me crossing the prairies. It was big but not AS flat as I had heard told in legend. The day passed as I listened to CD after CD and so did the provinces, Ontario to Manitoba to Saskatchewan to almost Alberta. As I passed through Saskatchewan I slowly came to realize that I did indeed have a travelling companion.....me. And so it came to pass that I had many conversations with myself
me: "Did you see that BIG sheep?"
myself: "You mean that 40ft high one?
me: "Yes"
myself: "No"
me: "No neither did I".

Coming into Alberta and yet another time zone I knew my journey was soon to stop, that day sometime anyway. :? Driving through the Rockies is always a pleasure although this time it was not for climbing, my destination was near Kelowna, BC.

Only 20km left to Kelowna and no sign of those fires I heard of. I tuned into a local station to hear of yet another fire on the west bank. Crossing the bridge I could see the planes and choppers getting water and attacking a plume of smoke to the north. Then as I drove the highway towards the town of West Bank, away to the east I got a panorama of devastation. The older fire that had caused the evacuation of nearly 30,000 Kelowna residents was there for all to see and stretched for miles along the eastern shore.

Kelowna is a town under seige. It has affected everyone here and my thoughts are with anyone living around here.

Well with the closure of Skaha to climbing to all intents and purposes, I managed to get a brief evening on a small conglomerate crag on the west bank of Kelowna. Shortly thereafter I decided to head over to Squamish.

I stopped off for a couple of days in an outskirt of Vancouver to visit with a friend before heading out to the mecca known as Squamish. Check out this for an arrival schedule.
4.30pm arrive and make a couple of phone calls, check messages/mail.
4.45pm hit the grocery store for some supper items before heading to a buddy's place.
5.00pm pick up my buddy Dan and head to the Apron below the Chief.
7.00pm get back down from the climb and back to the car having just done a 500ft route in about 40 mins. Simul-climbing can be an incredibly fast way to knock off a climb right after hitting town :D

Today though we woke to a front page warning of mandatory backcountry travel bans with $10,000 fines with 6 month jail terms. After a call to the local district forest service for news on affects on the climbs, I learn that the backside trails are closed along with all forest service roads. Day use areas and campsites remained open. Although I went to the boulders below the Chief with fiend and lilabbs this afternoon, news starts to circulate of closures spreading to include more climbing areas such as the Smoke Bluffs. By the end of the weekend it may be time to find somewhere else to climb, like south of the border.

Hope the bad weather isn't following you Grant! Have fun on the rest of your trip.
