If you anonymous Internet types aren’t too bashful, I’d love to get an idea what various climbers weights are, and if the heavier ones have found any good techniques for compensating for the extra "baggage".

I started this year, weigh about 240 now, and am practically useless on any overhanging climb. Any help would be much appreciated.

You're just going to have to beef up your climbing muscles, especially fingers and forearms. Everybody fights gravity, just some more than others. Another reason to maybe drop some weight is that 10% decrease in mass is a 10% decrease in force on your gear.

to answer the question: I am 6'3" and weigh 145.

I agree that you should try and lose some weight. But you should do it the safe way. Ask your doctor about safe dieting or, if your problem isn't eating, ask your doctor about some aerobic exercises that you can do safely.

I think that the key to weight loss is to be safe.

Losing weight isn't a problem (I've actually lost about 80lbs over the last year already), but it takes time! Problem is, last time I was thin to the point of scaring my friends and family, I still weighed about 195. Maybe I can get down to that weight in about 4 months, but I'll still be a freaking ox. Also, what about this summer!?

235 (at 6'7") here and I've made it over 1 overhang in 3 years of climbing - an overrated 5.7 gym climb through a short 2' roof. My failures were all strength related - I just couldn't hold on long enough to make the moves.

Thanks to a temporary move, I'm on a 1 year break from regular climbing so I'm hitting the weights and hangboard to see what gains I can make.

6'4" - 240 lbs.

I tried loosing weight, but was excercizing at the same time - lost a lot of body mass (fat), but no weight whatsoever..

The key ends up being a lot of technique, and a fair amount of brawn... Before my foot injury, I was almost able to do laps on this one long overhanging route at the gym..

5'8" 162lb. 17% body fat. big legs. Hop on that treadmill dude and start lifting. Since I am no tiny lightweight, I have had to deal with alternate techniques for cruising overhangs, like working on footwork and good technique. mostly, I've just chosen a different type of climbing to do most of the time since its not fun to flail on hardman strength problems. Another thought comes to mind - don't start hopping onto super crimpy stuff until you build up your hand strength, no need to blow tendons. Then again, I've heard the best training for climbing is climbing! Good luck whatever you do and be safe!

5'8, and I'm 205lbs, and it's not all the good weight either. I could probably afford to lose a solid 40lbs of fat. I've pulled some roofs in the gym and nice little overhangs climbing outside, but man did it hurt. I wonder if my climbing would get any better if I lost the weight....

5'9" 200 lbs, down a whopping 5 lbs since I took up climbing. My weight hasn't changed much but the fat/muscle ratio has flip flopped a bit. I climb about three times a week so I have developed pretty decent climbing specific sort of muscles. I know if I could drop 20-30 lbs I could be a much better climber.

My partner is 5'9", 130. She is not that strong and she has climed only about 8 times but she makes stuff I struggle with look soooo easy. Especially overhanging stuff.

Keep working the overhangs. When I started I would practicly curse at the thought of trying them. Now I can actually do fairly well at them but it is still HARD work! Push with those feet man. Bring em up high when you can and PUSH! Hang on straight arms like a monkey and push with those feet and you will be surprised at the progress you make.

Gosh yes!!!!!

Think of it this way:
That is 40 less lbs. of force on your fingers, on the pro, and on the little holds you are on.

Start running long distances. Start off easy and build up. You will lose weight and you will build endurance for those long roof problems where the abs are tight like a runner with a fat guy hangin on....

I am 5'10" and 180 pounds. Definately try to work on climbing fast over overhangs. Try up climbing, then downclimbing to a rest, then up again to try the crux, then down again. Rest a bit 1-2 minutes, then fire it. I am 6% bodyfat, but would like to get down to 175. I do about 1.5 hours of cardio (run/walk uphill on treadmill, stairmaster, swim) about 4 times a week, and climb 2 days on the weekends. Training for The Nose so have been working more on endurance and pain threshold rather than pure strength. As a personal trainer, my clients always ask how I get my legs so big. I just say that I rockclimb and that humping pigs really builds the quads. Actually I don't actually say "humping pigs" because I don't think they would remain a client for long, but they get the point.

TRADitionally yours,

Cali Dirtbag

I'm just under 6', weight about 155

When I started climbing I weighed about 175, but I don't know that I did anything but train hard. Muscle uses more calories than fat, so the more you have , the more you burn.

If you can't lose the weight, maybe try working on hard slabs for a while--it helps you use your feet way better, which will relieve some of the pressure on your hands!

6'2" and 185-188 lbs, depending on water intake.

I work out at the gym a lot (4-5 days/week), and I've stopped that at points in the past...eventually I drop down to about 175 without weightlifting. Even though I know the -10 lbs would help my climbing, I don't want to give up decent overall strength for simple climbing fitness.

Find that balance between how you want to look/feel and what you want to do, performance-wise. I personally wouldn't call typical hard-core climbers/triathletes/marathoners my "ideal" body type, so I don't strive for that as a goal.

I'm 5'10" and 175-180 #s. I did get down to about 162 #s when I was running a lot (ran lots of 1/2s and 1 full marathon). I'm starting that again so I'm hoping I'll get back down to around 165. 165 feels damn good!

Don't push it in the gym (yet)... at your weight you're begging for tendon injuries... take it easy, do some cardio, and you'll get there. Most of all: Have fun!

I'm 1.84 meters (or so) so about 6' 1" or 2 or something. Depending on what time of day it is. I'm about 82 kilograms (or about 180lbs or so).

I could stand to lose a bit of off-season flab (I took a month off and then injured myself so took abother month off so my fitness went bye-byes). But meh, it's not a lot, and if I reclassify it as "Emergency Alpine Food Storage", then I'm not actually overweight at all, just well stocked;)

6'1", compressed down to about 6' and 1/2" by years of dirtbike riding (no kidding... ask your chiropractor). My weight goes between the fat (205-2i5) cycles of summer, when I can't get out and really crank as much because of work and the weather, and the lean (195-205) cycles of midwinter, when I'm burning as many calories to stay warm as I use to move up the rock.

Since I live here in the jugs-and-overhangs-ridden south, I learned to climb through roofs back when I was a fat, new climber, and the technique has stuck through the years, regardless of my weight, which is currently 207... shooting for 195 this summer, but the weather seems to conspire against me... just gonna have to cut the carbs (which means beer... and pizza... oh, the HORROR!), up those crunches, drink more H2O, and ride more miles uphill when crosstraining.

205 & 6'. I'll be about 180-185 by the end of the summer though, thanks to the extended daylight hours to get out and climb/ride/swim in this georgeous Colorado summer. But when the cold sets in and I'm forced inside more and more as the days become shorter, the stout and lager consumption increases directly, and I will return to 205 (or so) again.

To everything there is a season :)

Depending on length of fall and rope length between the leader and the falling climber, a 10% decrease in body wieght I believe could relieve more than 10% of the heavier fall.

5' 9.5", 166 lbs. I weighed as much as 185 lbs. 7 months ago. Since, I've dropped most of the fat (I'm now pretty lean--maybe 6-8% body fat). There are two essential things you must do to loose fat: do more cardio and eat better. Eating better means eating reasonably healthy foods and eating a little less than you would probably like to. Focus on eating more in the morning and less at night. It is important to avoid pigging out before going to bed. avoiding food within three hours of bedtime will help you keep your calorie consumption down. You shouldn't starve yourself, though, otherwise you will lose a significant amount of muscle as well. Instead, try to drop no more than a couple pounds a week. And keep climbing; build those climbing muscles up! You might try some regular pullup training to build more muscle mass in the arms and back. Not only will the increased muscle mass in these areas help you pull harder, but it will also help you to lose fat. Muscle burns calories much faster than fat. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism. I used to eat only a few times a day without ever really feeling hungry. Now, I can't go more than about four hours without getting hungry again, even if I do eat a big meal. By the way, I should point out that when you're trying to lose fat, it is best to eat more small meals (5-8 is good) than fewer large ones. Good luck! 8)

let's make this easier and just divide body weight (lbs) by height (feet)...

I am 26.19721
155lbs/5'11"

5'11" => 5 + 11/12 => 5.91666

Since I'm not a college kid I don't get your math...

If you calculate your height at 5.11 then you are 30.33268. But thats goofy, you can't be 5.11. If you convert to inches that reallly doesn't work. (2.1830)

huh?

maybe you should use BMI (body mass index) as a guide: weight in kg (2.2 lbs per kg) divided by height in metres squared (2.53 cm per inch - divide by 100 for metres).

Weight [kg] / (height [m] * height [m])

So, my BMI is 22.28.

For non mathemeticians, divide your weight in lbs by 2.2, and multiply your height in inches by 2.53, then divide by 100 for metres.
confused?

Marc,
Probably wouldn't hurt to drop those pounds now while your young just from a health standpoint. As to climbing, develope your technique an style especialy if you want to be climbing latter on in life. As a friend told me many years ago, "Climb with your legs, You can't do pull ups to the top forever" I am 6' and weigh in at 175 I am also 53 years old. Sure I can't climb routes I did 30 years ago but I still enjoy it and isn't that the whole point?
Take care and climb safe

Another reason to maybe drop some weight is that 10% decrease in mass is a 10% decrease in force on your gear.

Depending on length of fall and rope length between the leader and the falling climber, a 10% decrease in body wieght I believe could relieve more than 10% of the heavier fall.

Good call there. Since g acceleration is in m/s^2, you're looking at more like an exponential increase, depending on fall distance. It's been many years since I took physics, so hopefully things haven't changed much :D

Same basic principle as momentum in a car. IIRC, a 4000# car moving at 60mph has 4 TIMES the impact of a 2000# car at the same speed, not double as you might be inclined to assume.

6', 152lbs. Definitely working on gaining muscle.

Anyone who tells you that a greater strength to weight ration won't help you climb harder either just plain doesn't know what they're talking about or doesn't climb particularly hard themselves.

I have no problems hanging out in the low 150's, but am very slow to build muscle :(

Hey..you can do it....just work on it gradually. Upper body strength definitely helps on those overhangs....I don't have a lot, never will, so it makes steep overhangy stuff difficult for me.
Watch the footwork too since sometimes that can be the difference in go no go.
And don't worry if you seem to be slimming but not losing weight...muscles weigh more than fat but your body will be leaner and stronger  ...and don't forget, some of us are just heavier than others!
P.S. Don't push it too hard on the crimpy stuff until you build up good arm strength, etc. A friend of mine blew his bicep muscles trying hard crimpy stuff before he was in better shape :(

I could probably afford to lose a solid 40lbs of fat. I've pulled some roofs in the gym and nice little overhangs climbing outside, but man did it hurt. I wonder if my climbing would get any better if I lost the weight....

Try this little experiment... wear a 40 pound pack... do a couple of pullups... take it off.....

If you loose the weight, just think how much more crap you can carry with you... hehehe

By the way, I am 5-10 and currently at 170 but was considerably stronger when I was 165 (more muscle) which is why I am heading back that way... Sucks not being as good a climber as I was.

so I guess it all depends on which side of the scale I'm on that will determine how hard I can climb..

I used to pump out quickly, when I started climbing 11/02, but can go much a longer time now, before my forearms start feeling like burning cement. I have also stopped weightlifting regularly, my forearms have developed (grip strength inprovement) while my biceps have atrophied slightly.

I have problems on vertical stuff that's all tiny crimps and toepockets, trying to keep my weight close to the wall, so that it's not constantly peeling my fingers off the crimps.

There's a reason most of the world's best climbers are not large people (always exceptions of course, but talking majority - Sharma, Graham, et al). The same physical principles are readily apparent in the sport of gymnastics where virtually all the world class competitors are small.

There is a tremendous disadvantage in carrying extre weight in that the relatiohship between mass and gravity is not a linear one, but more exponential. This is why a toy poodle can jump vertically several times its own height, while a full size poodle cannot. Or more extremely, a flea can jump like a hundred times its height, while an elephant can't jump at all.

I'm 6'3 about 210lbs. Its nice to have a long reach but then I have to pull my lanky self up the rock. I agree with everyone else, its all about technique. You can weigh whatever, you just have to have the strength to manage yourself on the rock. But if you're concerned about your weight remember this: everyone loves a fat man on the belay!

6'3", 200lbs

I think about this all the time and try to watch what I eat and how heavy I want to lift weights (on the few times I do). I STRONGLY feel being big and heavy is a disadvantage in this sport (despite what smaller lighter climbers claim "oh, well you can dyno better!" BS! For the most part, as climbs get harder, holds get smaller). I have several lighter and smaller friends who will always be able to climb harder simply by their genetic makeup. I bugs the crap outta me when they talk about a route where they have to crimp (half-pad) on holds only 2-3 fingers wide. You do the math, but to me that's usually like a quarter pad for me, 1-2 fingers. Take my 200lbs and that equates (if the route is as extreme as having no feet ) to 100-200lbs per quarter-pad per finger. To them, its like 40-60lbs per half-pad per finger. Don't get me wrong, I love climbing, it's just I have to accept that I probably won't ever be able to crank super hard climbs because I'm bigger.

Before you start spouting about all these big climbers (Loskot, Nicole, etc) I'm just saying as a rule, the lighter climber will be able to climb harder.

As I once heard someone say "I climb just as hard as Sharma, just on easier climbs"

5'8" - 150lbs, can't do chin ups, I get a little jelous of these little 105lbs girls that I've climbed with, but I don't really have much fat to lose.

This is just the way I'm built, I think I'd be unhealthy at anything lower than 130lbs, and if I want muscle I'm stuck at being a little heavier.

But you know what? I don't really care anymore that I can't pull as hard on overhangs, can't crank as hard as some when I head out bouldering. I'm young and healthy, and compared to how I felt and looked three years ago before I started excersizing I look/feel great.

Hurrah! Just get out there and have fun. Every thing else will gradually fall into place.

I'm 6ft even and 245 punds.

A year and a half ago when I started climbing regularly in a gym, I was 265-268.. depending on what I had for lunch..

In the last 8 months I haven't lost a pound, but I am climbing 5.10s instead of 5.8s

I noticed my greatest improvement in my hand strength (duh  ) as I started climbing more everhanging routes.

I think any big climbers best bet is to get fit. Not just low body-fat percentages, but aerobically fit. Train for endurance in the gym by doing laps on routes that are moderate for you. If you climb 5.10, do 10-20 climbs in the 5.8-5.9 range.

I can finally knock out 10 routes in an hour, and I'm working on 20.
In the gym I go to, that's 320 feet for 10 climbs.

Also, as much as big guys hate it, try a little walk/jog/run.
Start out with a mile, get to where you can run the whole thing without stopping. Then bump the distance up by half miles.
This will not only allow you to lose more fat, but it will lengthen your muscles and increase you overall endurance. Enabling you to hang longer on tough routes without getting too pooped to pull.

That's my buck fifty.

Scott

Not that this is much help, but I'm 5' 11" and weigh 145. Of course I am border-line anorexic (never any time, I'm not on a diet to begin with, so don't ask) which may affect that some. You might have excessive bulk which is useless for climbers. Go instead for well toned and low body fat.

6'4" 240lbs. I have never found my fat ass to be a great disadvantage to my climbing ability (5.6 -> 5.11 in 2 years). I simply need to build up my climbing endurance... its been getting lower. Probably b/c of this stupid office job of mine :(.

And of course its all about technique. Foot work is REALLY important but also mental toughness. I find in the overhanging sections I have to really WANT to hold on and squeeze the heck out of the holds. I find that grunting b/t moves helps out quite a bit as well. Maybe thats just a guy thing though.

Ethier drop some pounds, or get friggen strong or who knows you could work on both!

but as for myself I shouldnt be giving advice on this as I have never weighed more than 160lbs wet.

A: more than a duck and less than a Buick.

don't worry so much about the numbers and set realistic goals for yourself if you are trying to ditch the saddlebags. if you are serious, the truth of the matter is you are probably going to have to give up consuming something you really love: sodas, Icky Mickey's hot apple pies, whatever. eat just enough to send that climb you've been working for 2 weeks, but not so much that you feel like your harness is a self-purging device.

don't worry, some chicks dig a gut.

I am 5'10" and now weight 165-170, though I am building muscle as well as losing fat. I've been eating quality food, and enough of it to continue to grow muscle. Though once summer season hits hard, I will start cutting back the diet big time. I run usually 2 or 3 days a week "aerobic, not hard running" and it seems to be working for me. Usually by fall, I am rather anorexic "compared to when I am building muscle" , though I do eat enough food to keep my muscle base up.

Thanks to everyone who responded here. I'm new to climbing and new to this forum, so I'm very impressed and grateful for the generosity with information you folks have offered.

Guess I'll be losing weight this summer and just riskin' it in the meantime.

Hi,
I weigh 176 on the ground and aprox. 400 when I start to climb. This is only an estimate as it may be more.
Just keep working at it!

5'3 and 100. OK, maybe 103.

Yes, I am a "skinny little weiner-bitch-waif-scrawny anorexic wench-eat something you twig- you only climb that grade cos you're so tiny-whine whine whine"

Don't hate me because I'm beautiful ;) (note: that was a JOKE)

But seriously.

It's time for another Hillary Editorial. !!!

I am naturally thin. I have a small frame, "bird bones" as they say. I am not anorexic or bulimic or on drugs, and frankly, when I see cute little tag lines like "Real Women Have Curves" it's a bit hurtful because I AM a real woman too. It's awesome to be comfortable in your own skin, as long as you're maintaining a physically healthy lifestyle and aren't in any legitimate clinical danger owing to your weight (like my dear mother, 5'4 and 165, who has heinous hypertension and is on the road to Heart Attack City, because simply, she is too fat. Her doctor said so.)

But I think it's a bit hypocritical to embrace a Zaftig frame (whether it's healthy or not) while taking potshots at naturally petite people. I am small. I am a size 2. I am not rubbing this in, it's simply fact. It is largely a genetic gift, but I also am an active person. I climb as hard as I can as often as I can, hike, take the stairs, walk to the store, and I am enjoying the rewards by having a healthy, muscular, yet small body. And when people who are larger than I say "well, you're just so skinny" or "Real Women Have Curves" it feels like they're cheapening my experience (with a cop-out no less). Yeah, guess I'm too sensitive. Please, somebody, say "oh waaah waaah wahh" now, eh? ;)

Little people may take up less space, but we're not ACTUALLY lesser people ;)

I think what matters most is proportion.

Climbsomething: this is only meant in the kindest way, but you don't sound (nor look) disproportionally skinny so I wouldn't worry so much about . I'm a foot taller, about 100lbs heavier, and a male. I don't think someone with your proportions (or mine) is THAT skinny or THAT heavy, at least if viewed walking down the street. However, the difference comes when trying to fight gravity as for the most part anybody disproportionally heavy is probably going to have a harder time.

My whole thing about weight is that usually heavier people are taller, and most likely have bigger fingers which leads to higher weight-distribution per finger.

That being said, nothing but sheer determination should prevent someone from climbing hard, regardless of weight.

6'0" I've weighted in the 170s for most of my climbing time, but I've started to slowly eat weight by eating slightly better and slightly less and now I'm into the low 160s. My goal is the high 150s.

Oh, it takes more than that. :P

I'd say don't take it personally. "Real women have curves" is a backlash against a society that tells women who have let's say more generous curves that they fall short of the ideal. I find it all kind of pointless really. To each his (or her) own, and let it go. A good friend of mine who I've since lost touch with found women under 300 or so unattractive. While not for everyone, if it makes him (and them) happy, what's the problem? I suspect you get less grief for your appearance than his past, current, and future SOs.

hillary,
i think as long as you're active and healthy, you're all good. at 5'5", my weight's gone from 115 (college) to 190 (most pregnant). i'm at 135 pounds now, strong as hell, and a decent size 6. i've found that you get sh*t at either end of the spectrum - the more you deviate from some intangible/subjective number on the scale, the more your size invites comments/criticisms. (and it sucks. i've been there.)
but i also think that what we criticize most in others is strongly related to something that we're not comfortable with ourselves, ykwim? i'm not condoning it in the least, but i think that's where it's rooted in. in other words, it's their issue, not yours to deal with.

True, true. I think I am fine in my proportions, really. I am still smaller than most though, and many get snarky and point it out like I just don't know. But Jen is right, you get comments at either end of the spectrum. Ah, I guess I was just spewing a little

Its overwhelming to look at the number of messages in this thread. Personally for me I have gone through a pretty good size weight swing since my rediscovery of climbing last year. I went from 225, to about 170 now. I am 5'8, and I think the thing that has improved my climbing the most, especially when I was carrying the extra weight, was balance. I found that some of the balancing exercises I learned in my old ski racing days, as well as( I know some of you hate it) slacklining, helped me a lot. Being able to position all that weight can be a big help in improving your climbing.

If you are looking to lose weight, I do have a suggestion. If you can afford it get some sort of manual labor job. I am a college student and last summer worked pouring concrete. A 10 hour day lifting and shoveling and finishing will work the weight off quick trust me.

I hope all goes well, just keep climbing and don't get frustrated if you can't look like your well defined skinny friends. Work on your own climbing, your own body, and be happy with both.

I started climbing at about 230 (6' 2"), now I'm down to 205 and moving so much better! I'd say try and lose a few and if you do it right (ie not starving yourself and losing muscle) you'll notice a huge difference.

I can enthusiastically second that. I used to lose weight on a 3-4000 calorie a day non-diet. Having a job that frequently requires lifting things that weigh more than you do and occasionally up to 3-4x what you do burns energy fast and builds exceptional strength. Then you get an office job , quit climbing, and turn into jello. :P

Have you checked your weight to height ratio? You can be 240 pounds and 6' 10". That is 2.92 pounds per inch. I am 5' 5" and weigh in at 136 that is 2.09 pounds per inch. I am at the lower end of the chart for my weight. Where as 240 is at the upper end, even for some one 6' 10". Bottom line try to move toward the middle of the scale, you are definitely to heavy. Gee if I was 240 my ratio would be 3.69 pounds per inch. That would be obscenely obese. Climbing is a sport, got to be in shape for it, no ifs and buts about it. Lots of good beta given already in this thread on how to loose weight the safe way. Good luck, and rock on my friend.

Great idea, Pirate.

As for my height/weight ratio, I have one of those bodies that defies averages. I'm built wrong for climbing...I'm all torso and have the bone mass of an African rhino. Anyway, I am currently 232lbs/6'2". (That weight figure is correct, those of you keeping track will note my previously stated weight was as of a whole week ago.)

The trad climber would weigh more. They've got a lot more gear.

Anyways I'm 6'0 and weigh 175 on a good day. I normally vary anywhere between 165 and 175 depending on the time of day.

Oh, I've heard the original joke! A pound of trad climbers. Everybody knows sport climbers are just a myth.

Actually, once you get outside of North Carolina, your chances of getting lynched for sport climbing decline dramatically.

Two arguments:
1. A pound of trad climbers. Everyone knows that sport climbers are hollow, insubstantial beings.

2. A pound of sport climbers. They hit the deck way more often than trad climbers.

6' 2" and between 180-170 pounds depending on how much i have to eat that particular day. if you want to lose weight, go on gruelingly long hikes (30 miles +) with little in the way of food. You'll shed pounds like a dog sheds fur.

Ford checking in here... and still the winner in the height to weight ratio. We're talking 5'3" and 185 lbs. I still work the overhangs at the gym when i can. my peak strenght is HUGE. I could crush bones with my grip, but only for 10 minutes a day. (ONE overhang per session, please.) Any tips for improving endurance??

6'3" and about 210.

Gotta remember, it's all about power to weight ratio - being big has it's advantages too. If you get enough power at my size to tear overhangs apart bare-handed, your grip power and extra reach on smaller routes will leave the slim-hipped stick men gaping!

Go gorilla!

5'6", 200 lbs. Yes, it sounds like I'm hugely overweight - however, no one has ever said that I looked that heavy, even though I do have more body fat than I want. My thighs are 27" around, my calfs are 17" around, all solid muscle, I have a 24" vertical leap (enough to hit on a regulation men's volleyball net), and I take a size 44 jacket. My muscles and bones are so dense that I have trouble floating in water. The least I've weighted in three years was 184; I was cycling nearly 100 miles per week at the time. People say I'm built like a powerlifter - or, like a fireplug. *snicker*

Consequently, there's really not much I can do about losing weight unless I lose muscle mass. *shrug* You learn to cope. Where others climb up smoothly, effortlessly reaching the out-of-reach holds, you have to develop your footwork technique and use your legs to your advantage. Keep your arms straight as much as possible. And as other's have said, make sure you work your forearms before trying crimpers - I'm recovering from a pulled tendon in my wrist, because I didn't allow enough time for my forearms to get stronger.

It isn't a measure of fatness. I'd have the same BMI as a 203 lb, 5'8" couch potato or a 203 lb, 5'8" bodybuilder.

The correlation between BMI and body fat % is about .8 for adults; thus BMI is an approximate, indirect measure of body fatness. It was developed for surveys in which direct measurements of body composition are unavailable, as is the case in this thread.

While it is interesting to see the diversity in climber's weights and heights, I think a better question is what is a climber's relative strength/body composition in relation to weight and height. I am about 10 lbs heavier than I was last december, but I am much stronger and much leaner. For the record, I am 5'10.5", 158 lbs and about 9% bodyfat. Also, I can climb harder routes, campus, and do a pull up with over 50lbs in my backpack. I could not do any of this 6 months ago, so the little bit of muscle mass I have gained has translated very well into my climbing/strength gains.

one thing to keep in mind is wieght doesn't matter, thats right it doesnt matter!!!! its your strength to weight ratio that matters. the prime example is john dunn, if you dont know who he is first watch the flick "Hard Grit" or look him up in some older climbing mags. but to answer the question 5'10" 180lbs.

I'm 165 and a little over 6' tall. I think I'm at the good weight for my build and the type of activitys I do. About 4 years ago I was 186 and I felt to heavy to do anything. weight does make a diffrence

5'10" @ 140lbs, but i've got friends who can outpower me easily at the same height and 20-40lbs my better. but weight should only matter as much as you let it kinda the same way height matters only as much as you let it.

5'10" 140lbs as it seems a large chunk of this site is....I think of myself as scrawny, but I will say the lightness is great for rock climbing. As I climb more and more I just keep getting stronger. Sometimes I think about going to the gym and getting bigger, but I'm kind of happy with less weight for climbing so I just climb.

To give you an idea. I am 5' 9" 145lbs with 11% body fat. and send 5.12 sport and trad and climb A3. I have been as heavy as 185 and let me tell you it makes a difference. I Have also been less then 140lbs and i felt weaker. I have seen very heavy bone climbers with probably 20% body fat send Midnight lightning V7-V8, so go figure. There's no subsitiution for technique. CHEERS>

190Lb: Strength training for one and running more than 20 minutes on three separate occasions each week. Running helps cut fat and improve stamina, and weight/strength training helps improve strength so that I, a big climber, can pull off moves meant for small climbers.

I can do overhangs (hell, I HAVE an overhang!) and climb just about as well as my partner who I outweigh by 60. Ran 6 miles Saturday, so I'm working on it, mmmkay? :)

I don't get to spray about my climbing prowess (though I'm a damned good faller...), so I'm gonna resurrect this thread to spray a little.

Update: 5'8" (nope, still haven't grown) 184.0 this morning.

But I still have an overhang. :)

6'3" and 155... overhangs are fun, but they're still a bit of work. it's really not how much you weigh or how tall you are, it's more of a strenght to weight ratio... if you're 250 but can do 50 overhand pullups, you'll probably be golden

M/130/5'7" The weight machine @ the store said I have about 8% body fat. I have also weighed the same since jr. high. Fast metabolism I guess. I'm also extremely flexible. Definitely helps on overhangs which are my favorites. My only wish is to be slightly taller just to get those crimpers that are just. a. little. higher.

I thought I might try and get stronger by pumping a little iron as cross training for the winter months, however i oddly enough started losing weight ~5lbs. although I think it has something to do with the ski season starting early here in the wasatch. I don't think my body is ready for those long ski tours!

I totally suck on overhangs now, primarily cuz I climbed indoors for about 3 months, took 6 weeks off and have only been back at it for about 2 weeks. Lost loads of finger strength...

6 foot, 240 +/- 5lbs. I climb comfortable at 5.9, if I drop down to 215, I can crank!

You gotta use certain techniques to your advantage. For example, highstepping can be troublesome for a fatbody, so you have to get a good side pull, place your foot and then roll over it. Overhangs are a bitch, but if you can get a good hand, or fist jam, it's all good..... that plus getting super strong in your upper body. Also, core strength is key.... remember that if you get your midsection involved, it causes less strain on your grip.

The most important thing is to stay on your feet as long as possible, and once you've got good pro, gun through the cruxes.

my 2cents.

I am 5'10", 180 lbs. Have thick leg muscles, not much of a sport climber. I weigh too much and dont have the hand strength. I do run alot and can go for 12 to 20 hours in the mountains. With that, I prefer long alpine/trad routes, moderate to easy 5.10 to include chimneys and offwidths. My body type is more of a baseball players than a gymnst.

As junior in high school I weighed 265lbs @ 6' roughly. I lost 80 pounds over my junior summer and through senior year. Now at about 180lbs, 6'3. I have very little trouble with overhangs as mentioned in the beginning of this thread, but it took lots of hard work and practice. LOTS. Fat kid -> leading 5.12 sport in three years. Yep.

ive found that the best way to loose weight / loose fat and gain muscle is to just boulder in the gym a few times a week

if i didnt id be 400 pounds and the size of a dumptruck

Right now, I am 5'9", 155 with 2.6% bodyfat (just had it tested yesterday in a BodPod for track). I have a pretty good strength to weight ratio- can crack out 50+ pullups and do 1-armed pull ups, pushups and abs for days. The explosive training for track (I'm a sprinter) helps with core strength.

During track season we aren't lifting as heavily, and I drop to about 145 or so. But I get faster.

5'10" and 205 currently. I boulder V7 and redpoint .12s when I gots the endurance. I also climb mid .10 on gear.

I am a very balanced individual right now, with a very strong upper and lower body. I just came off of a season of guiding which put me up 10-15 lbs. and put my onsight to low .11. I am currenly redpointing high .11, with .12 in the near future. I can still boulder aights, but need to be lighter. I can still crank .10 on gear

My peak was 177 lbs. but I took a job as a professional mover, which gained me some lbs., and I started bouldering constantly and my muscle content just skyrocketed. When I was that low I couldn't boulder more than V4/V5, but I could climb easy .11s on gear all damn day.

I'm one of those lucky fellows who're strong as shit. I can still do about 25 pullups from a half hang, probably 20 from a full hang. At my best I Was doing 35. I've definitely lost some, just cause I Was a pro walker this past summer on Mt. Shasta, but I'm coming back.

It can be done by the big dudes. Believe it. I'll have a pic on my profile soon

I weigh 192 lbs. If you could slim down to 200 or 205, somewhere in there you should have no problem. That is if your not all fat! I weigh 192 and have less than 4% body fat, sooo..just cause you loose weight doesent mean a thing. You must loose body fat!

Its been this weigh (ha, little pun...) for me since I was a sophmore in HS, now a senior in college. There was no freshman 15 when I went to school (we get served slightly worse than prison food) and even when I do nothing but drink and party for what seems like weeks, I gain nothing but 2 or 3 lbs which I can lose on the throne reading the news. It helps with climbing though, I have a pretty high strength to weight ratio. Also better for XC running, which I have been doing since HS too.

it's power to weight ratio. i lost about 25 pounds sport climbing and when i hit 150 pounds (I'm 6'1") i noticed a big change in how much easier pumpy routes got. train hard and don't over eat. it's that simple.

Ok I'm not a very big person but I got put into the heavyweight climber catagory because I weighed in at 175 at a gym user friendly comp. It was a joke, I was by far the smalles for the catagory I mean I am thin the guys I was copeting against were fat old dudes. No offence to you guys I just chalked that up to experience on your part. I am back down to 160 now so I'm still not considered a heavy weight by the gym. I think they made the cutoff at 170.

Male, 46 - 5"9" 182 lbs.

Would prefer to be back around 168 - have taken up running again (4 days a weeks for 3-4 miles per session). Also do high-rep weight lifting 3 days a week. Weekends are for climbing or skiing.

So far - haven't lost much weight, but my muscle mass has increased.

Eat a pretty clean diet - fiber in the am, no red meat, no fast food, etc. - but will admit to a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale jones

i just started climbing about a week ago and have gone twice. i weigh 267# at about 6'0" but a lot of it is muscle. and the first route i did was a 5.7 and i had no prob getting up it. i took my local gym's 101 class and started with my buddy right away. anyway.... my way of looking at climbing for me is that i am my only opponent. so i'm heavier and cant possibly make it up anything more that a 5.9 but that is just my level. i don't mind. i guess that i look at a 5.7 for me as being like a 5.9 for all the other skinny kids there and it doesn't bother me, anyway i was just wondering weather or not anyone could give me any info about equipment failure for someone of my size.

I am about 5'7 and weight about 145... when I first started climbing I weighted about 150 and I have noticed a difference between then and now and I think it got easier after losing those 5 pounds.

I'm 5'10, and I weigh 170. (Good grief, I'd be a heavyweight at lidosis' gym!). I put on 20 lbs in the last 3 months (heavy weightlifting and heavy eating!), and I didn't notice too much of an effect on my climbing. Granted, I'm pushing my limits on trad lines (mostly easier than 5.11), so the story would likely be different if I was doing overhung crimpy gym routes.

6'0" 125lbs 4% body fat

I've gained almost 10lbs (and lost 2% body fat) since I started climbing; I was at the opposite end where strength and endurance was an issue due to lack of mass. I think I'm one of the few climbers that has benefited from gaining weight.

Being that skinny (I'm trying not to say weak) forces you to work on form as much as carrying extra weight (though I did manage to pull myself up a 5.10a on my second day climbing). ;)

No great climbing accomplishments, not enough time yet.

I bought my harness a little while ago. I don't consider myself big by any stretch of the imagination but I had to buy the XL harness size  . I figured most climbers must be pretty skinny. I wear 34" pants, soon to be down to 33 or 32, not from losing weight though. I figure I'll still be around 180.

On the harness, It was a BD Blizzard and it MAY have been the largest size it came in.

I'm about 5' 8" (male, just short) and weigh 141 lbs. Losing weight can be hard (my parents were noth fat) especially if you include exercise, and not just dieting. With exercise, you will often gain muscle, as you lose fat, and therefore not really notice a difference in pounds.
