Hey all you West Coaster (and anyone else)

I am in the process of palnning my vacation right now, and it tentitavley looks liek I will be down in OR in teh middle of Aug (the week of the 11th) and was thinking of trying to get a group together at Smith.

I have never been, but I know of a group of local Portlanders who go quite often (Brogan, T, and others) what do you think.

This is a thoguth in the process...what say you all. And any others who want to come check it out.

The Russman

Do I ever complain????Not I....
I will be as quiet as a mouse...

ask anyone in the Joshua Tree RC.com group...
they'll vouch for me, at how quiet I am.

I am not a complainer!! Just a little bit squeeky...
like a mouse...quiet as a mouse.

that is what I thought. I knew I could count on Brog and T. I know Brog like lives out there in the summer

My in-laws want to go camping in sisters for teh week...and since I will not be able to make it to SLC, I thought I am close enough to take a couple days and go to Smith. I figured that would spark a jump

As soon as I know more for sure as far as dates, I will throw them down here. I am trying to get teh week of Aug 11-17 off and we can go from there. as far as what days.

And Brogan, I live in teh desert year round. 90 degrees will be cold compared to what I am used to at that time of the year I might bring the lil_cwboy out for a day too, will jsut have to see

Well, i know that I will be down in Smith in the end of April or so, but perhaps again in Aug too.

Not sure if I can make it yet, but sure sounds like fun.

When you guys get to the planning stage let me know what the plan is and I will try to make it out.

The camping is right nexxt to the rock but there is no Fires and you can't camp next to your car. There is a safeway 3 miles up the road and the crowds are minimal in Aug. In the middle of the week it will be a ghost town, everyone stays away in the heat. My house is 35 miles away on the Dechutes river. My neighbor rents his house out to my friends and family.

Ok, I'm officialy thinking about it. I have to run these things by the boss though and that means I might have to sacrifice my Devils tower trip but sofar I havent found anyone to take me on that anyway, and now that everyone knows that I have to check with the boss, I'll have to come up with a really good excuse to post here if I get shot down. Example excuse #1: Ahh man tha flights are full I can't get out there. I'll work on some better ones, I got all kinds of time.

I'll be gone to Texas then, but sounds fun! FYI, I am an avid Smith Rock freik, and I climb there year round, but I thought that you all should know that in August the temps are in the 90s, its super dry, and the holds are pretty greasy. Don't get me wrong, I have climbed hard .11's and low .12's during this time of year, but it is really demanding. I guess the point is, know what you are getting into, and if your okay with that, have fun!

There is also camping, for free, at the Grasslands which is about two miles east of the park, and is more suitable for large groups, car camping, and general rowdieness!

We then would carpool to the park, alieviating some of the already sick parking problems.

On a side note; There have been, for about a year or so, break-ins to newer Subarus (well not breaking, they have a master key), hopefully this will be solved by the time we go. With a key they've been able to get into cars in broad daylight.

When it is hot, there are many ways to hide from the sun. The upper gorge is nice (woman in the meadow is overrated) the rock is much more friendly than the volcanic tuff that the main complex is made of, and it is a crack climbers paradise. With most of the routes being fairly short it makes a wonderful toprope area. The "backside" is especialy nice in the morning, and the Pheonix area is good in the afternoon.

I hope this helps, if anybody needs more beta just let me know!

this one.
But, smith in august?
"whew" I'm melting just thinking about it.
Sounds way kicka$$ though!
I'll just make sure that most of the
weight in my pack will be water!
Because its gonna be hot!

Can I handle this one? so soon? I might try to sneak in, but don't write my reservations in Pen.... please use pencil..

I would really like to do this, but i am not exactly caught up at work, and I already am taking a week in July (no not Yosemite )

Anyway, the blue toes are gone..... and now I have the climbers blues.... You guys were fun, and I can just imagine how fun Oregon could be.

Here's the plan, I will play it by ear. If things work out.... I might bring a passenger up from SLC (spouse or climber - her choice of course)....

If not this one... definitely the next one!!

I've decided to come ut and just ask this rather difficult question to bring up.
Please try to understand my reasoning behind the question.
My husband and I are toying with the idea of making this gig. However... as usual whenever there is a large group and possible partying...I must always be very careful. I learned at a very very young age that I have a severe alergy to the second hand smoke of pot(convulsive seisures... been triggered by just walking through a cloud). I know that there are some that do partake and I want to know if this would be happening at the campground where most of the folks would be staying. If so..then Marmot and i could make arrangements to stay elsewhere...but we would like to have an idea before i put myself into a very risky situation. Please be honest.
Thankyou,
Otter

Otter:

thank you for your candor.

I was in Utah...thinking that certain things might be outta hand...too. Drinking or too hard of partying.

Ok...not a soul that I know of...was partaking in any form of Pot smoking. Even drinkin was to a minimum...under control, that is.

I think your asking is GREAT! Stating your needs.
I don't see this as an issue.
But, for you own safety...maybe staying at a small hotel/motel...would give you an out...for safety sake.

I hope this helps.
Utah: 65+ people...
not a single issue.

keep in touch...k?

Hi everybody I'm new to this site, and was curious if these trips are open to anyone? My climbing partner bailed to Utah and your trips sound cool. Do I have to have partner to go with?

I should be leaving Corvallis, Oregon on Wednesday about 5 or so. I plan on staying till sunday (prolly midday or so). If anybody wants to tag along, I'm going to have open seats. Let me know VIA PM and I'll arrange something. Also, I have no problem picking someone up from pretty much wherever in Western OR, Portland/Metro, whatever. Let me know if you wanna ride with me.

Portland Int'l Airport: cheaper...just a 3 hour drive to bend.
We need to coincide rides!!
What days, all are coming in...

I have a car...seats 4.

Hey, I just logged on to this forum and am from Eugene so this sounds like fun. Let me know if you are still open to others. I can lead 5.8/5.9, so if there are others at this level it would be sweet. Can someone either email me or call me and let me know the scoop? My number is 731-1725 and email is annnaleemcbee@yahoo.com
AND if this doesn´t work, and any of you Oregonians are interested in climbing on Sundays, Mondays or Tuesdays, let me know. I´d be stoked.

It's BLUE! Polish stays BLUE!! You gotta keep it with the rest of the Gatherings of Rc.com.

I've been asked many questions on where to camp.
There is an area called "grasslands"(I have no direction on this as of yet)
Smith Rock camping is easiest... right when you drive into the park...Camping is to the left...park and walking into the camping area... no fires in either area.
smithrock.com also has tons of information.

redmond or Bend have great places to stay.

All cellphone work in the park well.
Meeting up at the ticket(day pass) booth early in the morning like 7:30 for cooler temperature climbing.
Then: re-meeting up at
noon, meeting at the picnic tables...at the top parking area for lunch and then back down to the park and chase the shade.

Do have an agenda on what climbs we/ you're doing...only because of the busy-ness of the park.

Starting there early in the am like 7:30
morning glory and the dihidrals...ventureing to the back side or the gullies as the day goes on...redwall...Basically to chase the shade.

I have a stick clip.
never before used

Bring your gear
head lamp
Water
Food
and the WILL to climb
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!
too fricken exciting

T
I will be adding to this as beta comes in.

Portland-ites! I might be down with this myself. I've never caught up with and RC event, but am pretty amped up to get to Smith again. I have a suburban and can take a lot of bodies with gear. Keep me in the loop as the plans get solidified. Hope to make it,

Alright, this is my understanding of the campground situation. The "Grasslands" also called Skull Hollow (that's what the signs say, people call it the Grasslands) is free. It's about 5 minutes away, not easy to find if you don't know the way, but not at all hard to find with directions. I don't know the exact directions, but I can get them easy enough. The camping at smith rock is pay camping. It's very close to the climbing area (for those of you that haven't been there). It's about as close as you could get without camping right next to the wall. Either place would work just fine. Organizers, let us know where we are to go/meet.

T: The stick clip will come in handy, I wish I had one last time, just used good spotters

I'll post directions to the grasslands for anybody that wants to camp there as soon as I get my greedy little hands on some (should be today yet )

Hope to see ya'll there. Gonna be fun.

ALrighty, I found some directions to Skull Hollow.

http://www.smithrock.com/aboutsr/maps/images/map6.gif

It is a map of the route to get there, it's free camping, kind of very open, but it's close and free. Hope that helps!

I do what I can . Bringing this back up to the top... can't wait to see you all there, oh yeah, this should prolly go in roll call, but I will have another person with me if that matters at all.

Also, I'm still available for rides, if you need one, let me know, I have room for 2 more people (3 if you REALLY wanna) and room for gear. Just let me know!
