i called my airline that i am flying with tomorrow. here's the conversation.

Me: uh high, i hear you have some allowances for overweight luggage if the items are sporting goods.
Airline Rep: Well that depends. What are you bringing?
Me: Climbing equipment, like a rope and other climbing gear.
AR: Is it flammable?

Make-up your own dumb answers!

Last time I traveled via air, I filled one of those giant gear bags with all my climbing stuff. It must have weighed 70 lbs, so I just casually lay it down for the ticket agent (woman, maybe 100 lbs) to pick up and put on the belt.

When she tried to lift it, and failed, she asked what was in it? I said "climbing gear", she asks "Oh, you take your window cleaning stuff with you?" I said "Yeah, the hardest part is folding the scaffold and getting it in the bag!"

My favorite was when I was doing the "Tour De Platte". Just finished the first dome and this group of mullets were hiking up to the summit just as we were getting there. The lone girl in the group asked how we got up. "Did you guys just throw your ropes up until it caught something then pulled yourselves up?" Yep, that's exactly how it's done.

There's a little cliff in a park that I used to go for some quick climbing. There's a camping ground and RV Park there as well, so lots of tourists and little kids who think they are cool.

I'm leading a hard route (5.10a) and these kids walk up the trail to the top of the cliff, looking down, watching as I climb. I don't mind people watching me climb, but they were right over top me.

After watching me for a bit, they walk down to the base near my belayer and one of them says "I could run up that!". Once I got to the top, I said, "run up it, eh? Show me!" and they just kinda shugged it off and moved on.

That's happened twice. Kids saying its easy and that can run up it.

Also... at the same place...

"You know there's a trail around back" -- im like, urggg....

I work as a birthday party belayer at the local gym. Here are some funny things kids say about their first time climbing expirence:

(We tighen their harnesses)
I feel like a sumo wrestler!
It feels like a diaper.
Do we really have to wear this?

Some kid came up to me once and asked "can you tighten my furnace? see, it's loose" I had to politely explain to him amongst my laughter that it is actually called a harness.

One kid encouraged his friend who required help on the wall saying "use that brick over there!"

Kids always think that the bouldering cave is the kiddie wall.

One kid tried to use the rope in one hand and a hold in the other to climb the wall.

Kids always make me laugh! Some of these aren't so funny, but its cool to see the misconceptions people have about climbing.

I'm originally from India but am living in Tucson.

I find it irritating when people assume that I've climbed/been to/ want to climb the Everest.

I haven't even been close to that place and alpine stuff scares the crap out of me.

Another favourite that non-climbing people like to point out - "There are many ways to the top of the mountain. But once there the view is the same."

I helped run the portable wall at the last air show and we had 95% kids climb. some of them would grab the rope with both hands and try to climb with their feet, or think we were going to pull them up! Kids amaze me, the ones that think they're the toughest can't even make it up half way, then I belayed a 3 year old deaf girl and she went all the way up!! Oh, then the dumb ass parents calling their kid scardie cat and wimps..I was ready to smack 'em up side the head!! I even told them I'd like to see them try it...non of them had the guts enough to do it.

Describing bouldering to non-climbers...they just don't seem to get it.

"It's so low, how is it any fun? You're not going up anywhere"

or from parents who bring there kids into a gym

"first work on getting up that wall (bouldering cave(!)) then I'll let you go on the big walls" wha-??

Yea, I go through the same thing working as an instructor through 3 different gyms. The parents can be frickin' ridiculuous at times. One time we had a parent screaming at her 3 yr. old son to get to the top of a 40' wall, telling him that he couldn't come down when he wanted to. Was she belaying? No. I cut in and simply let the poor guy down.

Urg.. frickin stupid.

i get this from friends i take climbing (usually when grabing a crimper): Wow! how do u hold onto that?!

another great thing to watch is when new climbers (again, usually my friends) try bouldering or whatever and they purposely try to grab the biggest slopers on the wall, thinking that oh, the bigger the hold, the easier it is to grab, right? always fun when they go for the boss or something like that!

Do we really care what non-climbers say about our sport? Heck, I oughta start a thread "Dumb things non-engineers say." We could populate it with all the misinformed comments from people who try to explain how a kilonewton "weighs about 225 lbs." Have you never said something dumb about a topic with which you are not familiar? Give the hikers and tourists a break. They find what you do both interesting and dangerous and that suits me fine. The more dangerous they find it, the less likely they'll be hogging my favorite route anytime soon.

We all say and do dumb things.
I know just about everytime I speak I re-enforce my village idiot status
but how many of us super enlightened people (read climbers) actually knew "how did they get the rope up there?"?
Fortunately, we now have the most meaningful knowledge anyone could ever want, we know climbing lingo!
Ain't we cool!
Wow, you know the difference between soloing and free climbing, awesome!
I just can't get over that people can actually live with themselves without knowing that bolts aren't pitons.

But on a serious note,
Of the course the bouldering cave is the kiddie wall!

Sorry for trying to be that voice in your head that says "don't make fun of people." It's just that these threads seem to always take on that sort of tone. "Ha! Look at all the stupid hikers and thier silly misconceptions about our sport....I'm so cool."

But if the spirit of the thread is all in good fun, I do have one to add that put a big smile on my face. I was walking around top to set a TR wearing my small rack on a gear sling and a school group was hiking through. When I passed this cute little second grader, he tapped his buddy on the shoulder and said "wow! look at all those keychains!"

And collegekid, i can't think of a single engineering class I've taken in the past 3 years that isn't math based. Physics? Statics? Thermo? EE? CS? All of them have strong math components. Just where do you attend college?

Just wait until you graduate and get in the real world , you'll understand.

My personal fav is, "how do you get the rope up there?" I usually just say, "you don't," and start climbing. Though another good one was a few years ago, I was in the cafeteria on the summit of Mt Washington, after hiking Huntingtons Ravine, and discussing with my friends about doing one of the routes on the head wall of the ravine. When a hiker passing our table looks at us, and says, "yeah and then they can put your name on that plaque over there." My responce was, "no that plaques for all the stupid hikers who don't know when to turn around." My statment wasn't true in the least, but it got the reaction I wanted out of this guy, totally indignity.

Being a physics major, and having taken some engineering courses. Egineering is decidedly devoid of math in comparisson of my current classes. I was like, "Where are all the proofs? How do you derive that? Why do the problems give me actual data? You where looking for me to solve it numerically, not symbolically?" Yet I don't get math analysis classes at all.

while walking with a bouldering pad on my back...
Hiker - "what the heck is that thing on your back?"
Me - "we use it incase we fall, so we dont hurt ourselves"
Hiker - "yeah, I guess these trails can get pretty hard"
I guess they thought it was like a butt pad.. Man!

While bouldering...
Hiker - "sooo, what are u doing exactly"
Me - "its called bouldering, a form of climbing rocks"
Hiker - "ohh, you're training to climb the big ones like Everest eh?"
How annoying is that one?

I wonder why a lot of you think what non-climbers have said is dumb. I could see it being funny, but dumb seems a little much. Just because a majority of us have climbed for a while, know how things work and why we do it doesn't give any justification to say that what non-climbers say is dumb. For non-climbers, climbing is like Latin to them. Meaning they have know idea what it's about or how it works. Just think of any job, sport, hobby, etc. that you know very little or nothing about, do you think you've said someting dumb like the Everst thing? I'd say more then likely a majority of us have. With some of the jobs I've had throughout life I can tell you I've heard funny things, but not dumb.

Longalong,

I think almost everyone here would agree with you, I just think the original title for the original post was maybe done in haste or without as much thought put into it as has been by now. I think, not speaking for the creator of this thread, but I think that there context of "Dumb" probably would have been inter-changable with "Funny", and not meant in a truly derogative manner. Again just my $0.02.

Middle school There were times we woulda made sailors blush. Maybe it's a boy/girl thing. Maybe girls wash their minds out more than boys do.

Then again, maybe she thinks "belay" sounds even worse. Even climbers pull a joke out of that one from time to time.

"It's too nice a day to climb."

Uttered by a pseudoclimber friend of mine way back when, spawning merciless teasing there for a while.

I think it was actually code for "Hooooly crap! Little 30-40' climbs at Great Falls was one thing. Now you want me to climb THAT!?!"

"That" was Seneca Rocks. I might have been a little less merciless had I decoded the meaning way back when.

You should hear some of the dumb things engineers say about physics! :) Come on, this thread was fun. Poking fun at non-climbers is a fulfilling bonding experience. Enjoy it!

When working at the local gym over the holidays I often get from mainly young kids, "can you 'do me' on this one", with like the YMCA groups and scouts and stuff. I don't correct them, i just say i'm not wearing a harness so I can't and I have to make sure nobody is doing anything wrong so, "no I can't go put one on".
The hard part is fighting back the urge to say somethign dodgey when attractive 17 year old girls say the same thing to me, (me being 17 myself).
I also see the parents that expect their kdis to get up the 26 (australian/n.z. system) that I've just demo climbed for them, and won't let them down until they have done it, until I go over and tell the parents that their child isn't 'tall' enough to make it (even though it's not true).
And I get the guys that say "are those ballet slippers", and when they see me climbing a roof section, I get "are there magnets in those shoes". And i'm thinking "yea, and the holds are made with iron fragments".
When I'm outdoors climbing on the mountain I get "oh look he's taking the shortcut", or, "you know there is an easier way up, right?"

Cheers, from pudding

There is this hill where you can climb one side or just go through a path on the other side.
I was climbing with my girlfriend and when I got to the end of the route I set the anchors and started belaying her.
An old lady stared at me for a little while kind of funny, when she finally saw my girlfriend she was shocked...
She got close to me and told me: "There is a path if you come this way, you know?" and she left saying we were fools that we didn't even know there was an easy way way to get to the top...

Well, some of the non climber's stupid comments aren't really cool.
The people "gently" telling you there is a trail around the back are often doing it thinking that it will show how much of an idiot YOU are.
That's how life is... so laughing about them gives me some comfort.

Kids on the other hand just don't know what's up, most of the time.
After a month of belaying summer camp kids in an indoor gym, I got pretty fed up with "did ANYONE ever get to the top of THAT ONE???!!!" pointing to the taller lead wall (51', 20deg overhung for 30 feet).

Its kind of a disillusion when I ask them how they think we put the hold on it, or that I can't even warm up on it (5.8ish with all the jugs) because it's too easy.

There are moments of pure gold however while belaying kids, the best of them always being some little girl beating the asses of all the toughie little boys by climbing the wall in record time while they can't even top out.

I like it when non-climbers ask questions about the sport. Whether the questions sound dumb or not, at least they want to learn/understand. What I find funny are non-climbers pretending to know everything about climbing.

Here's a situation: I used to work at a camp where they had a little dinky climbing wall for the kids. To make switching kids on the ropes faster, we clipped them in with locking biners attached to a figure-eight knot.

My boss called upon all the "certified climbers", as they said, (aka: people that passed a top-roping course in a gym and got a gym membership within the past year) in the camp to explain the climbing wall procedures. He goes on explaining how we will be tieing the kids in then said: "Make sure you tie a rewoven figure-eight. DO NOT tie a figure-eight on a bight; it is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!"

My climbing partner (who also worked at the camp) and I later confronted our boss about what he said, and asked him why he considers figure-eight on a bight so dangerous. "Because it twists the rope, causing it to break. I swear it's true! Some guy told me he saw a rope break because it was tied with a figure-eight on a bight!"

Where people learn such things, I wish I knew.

While at Devil's Lake with Bolderror and psalmadventurer, and psalm's bro., we were hiking up for some bouldering:

Hikers or whatnot: What's that pad thing on his back?
Hiker's friend: That's a funny thing to sleep on.

Hahahahahaha. No.

I overheard someone the other day say how she thought John Ashcroft was only doing what should have been done years ago. Now that was some dumb shit, and I pretty sure she wasn't a climber.

OK, stupid things climbers say . . .

We were at Lover's Leap and I was about to start up something when an older looking couple, man and woman, nicely dressed come up and ask "What are you doing?"

"Climbing," I say, condenscendingly.

Then I noticed they were holding a guide book.

At the local outfitter's... I was talking to the guy behind the counter, and someone was in line behind me about to ask about fishing gear

Me: (explaining why I wasn't buying the $150 harness) Hmm... well, I dont really have the money, and its not like i'm 5.12 yet, so I really dont think i need that yet...
Dude Behind Me: You mean 6 foot? (Apparently thinking that I had meant 5'12" as in my height)

All I could do was turn and stare. I was so speechless I couldnt even eek out the word "wow"

An actual conversation I had with a friend over instant messanger before going climbing:

Him: hey whats up?
Me: I'm going climbing
Him: off a cliff?
Him: can i have your computer?
Me: no.. up a cliff
Me: and I'm not going to die
Him: ah nuts

Sure enough, I climbed up a cliff and not off it.

And sure enough, I didn't die.

before i learned to climb i was sightseeing with a gf at a local waterfall where there is also some climbing. at the time i didn't know anything about climbing.

a guy and girl were walking down the trail back to the parking lot carrying climbing gear. here's the conversation i initiated:

me: how was the climbing?
him: good
me:how high did you get?
him: well we climbed some routes
me: oh, so did you get to the top of the falls?
him-frustrated: partway.

i was so clueless!

I was helping set routes at the YMCA gym so there were holds spread out on part of the floor. There were these kid climbing who had his buddy belaying him. The kid on the wall wasn't doing a route or anything but he was stuck. He said to his buddy, "Hey hand me one of those rocks on the floor! I need to use it!"

I was putting up a few routes at Smith Rock a couple of years ago, hiking down to the park fully loaded: a full pack of gear and ropes, so I was carrying my rack. A young couple was at the observation area, and the man noticed his girlfriend looking impressed by my load.
Man: "He just wears all that gear so he will be photographed."

Another time at smith, I overheard an old guy say, upon noticing the draws a climber was clipping:
"I've got snaplinks like that on my tractor!"

One of my favorite from a non-climber was again at Smith. An older woman, knowing nothing about climbing and obseving a person following a pitch, quietly asked me:
"Excuse me? How do you thread those links?" Pretty good observation!

I was climbing at an overhang near town, when a tourist came up to me and my climbing partner and said:
"so you doing some rock climbing?"
"yup"
"are you using ropes?"
"yup"
"aw, that's the sissy way"
"well sir, we kind of have this fear of death, so we try to avoid it"

Also, my climbing partner was talking to his cousin about climbing.

"why do you climb rocks?"
"to get to the top"
"but what's at the top?"
"nothing, you just get to say you got to the top"
"I woulden't climb up there unless there was a penthouse at the top"
"There's always a penthouse at the top of my rock"

"Have you ever fallen from up there?"..Asked by a hiker after watching an 70 foot rap.

"Why do you wear those funny shoes?"

"If you get stuck up there, how do you get down?"

one of the best I have ever gotten while belaying for a party at my gym is, "are those shoes just for looks?"

Also there was this one heavy lady while I was doing a pretty hard bouldering route on the bouldering walls, and
she asked, "why do you start all the way down there, why don't you just reach up and grab as high as you can?"
me-, "umm, the bouldering route starts right there"
her-"still wouldn't it be easier?"
me-,"yah but the point is to finish the route"
her- why would you wanna finish the route, isn't your only goal to get to the top the fastest?"

Also when kids ask me about rockclimbing competitions they always ask me, "so, what's your quickest time?"

I also get a lot of, " hey look he's like spiderman!"

One really stupid one is, "one time I rockclimbed. And it was really high."
me-"cool, where?"
them- " you know at P.F. chang's where those big statue horses are"

And by far the worst of all is, " why don't you use real rock on these climbing walls?"

I work at a gym so we get a lot of the standard stupid comments but the best came when I was belaying at a birthday party. A girl about eleven was climbing pretty good and got up about 25 feet then made the mistake of looking down. Rather than chicken out in front of all her friends the conversation went as such:
her:"I have to get down, RIGHT NOW !".
me :"Why? You were doing so well?"
her:"The rope is breaking, I hear it snapping"
I couldn't help but giggle but the best part is when her seven year old brother answered "I told you she was to fat to climb up there!". I almost dropped her I was laughing so hard. Needless to say no tip for Al.

when my friend and i first started climbing we went with a good friend of ours who was more muscular then we thought. i was belaying him and he fell and i flew into the air and smacked the wall across from us. it was hilarious a few days after, when i wasnt black and blue all over. from then on, whenever one of us belayed him the other one would have to hold the back of the oher's harness so that they wouldnt fly through the gym.

Just a couple of weeks ago I bought some bungee cords for my truck bed to hold stuff down ya know? And my dad sees them and asks me if I got those to protect myself while climbing. Okay, not that funny but I thought so.

It is so funny when I'm at the gym and little kids come in and tell their friends in a joking way "you're going to start on that wall!" pointing to the bouldering. One time this little boy that was like a foot taller than his friends jumped up and touched the ceiling by a bouldering wall and said "these walls are easy!"

also ive had people convinced that the down climb for the bouldering wall at my local gym is the way to the top. yea we just put the lil holds on for decoration.

forget non-climbers i love watching noobie climbers try to get on v10s or really nooby climbers that skip the start hold and start on the highest part of the problem they can reach.

"Now, are 5.3 and 5.7 numbers of minutes it took to climb in the lead? When they led were they the ones putting in those clamps or hooks that the people behind them are connected to or is leading more of a scoping out the foot and hand holds thing?"

Those are just climbers that are tired of contrived sit-starts and are experienced enough to know that if you can reach the top of the boulder then you've already solved the problem.

At our gym, there are normal walls, then one part that has 3 sections of overhanging wall. Everyone thinks that that is the hardest route, even though they are the easiest.

no believe me I am experienced enough to recognize a good climber, besides good climbers also dont grab the "ladder" downclimb that is clearly marked out.

I hate it when i see new people doing this:

"Look at that 5.13! It looks so easy!"
*They climb it using ALL colors. They ask the manager a question*
"Man these routes are too easy, you got any harder ones"
*the manager replies*
"Ya, this 5.12 is pretty hard"
*soon the guy does it with ALL colors*
"Its too easy" he says
the manager then replies, "Its hard when you do it in one color"
They newbie tries it with ONE color, and couldn't even get off the ground. He soon heads for the 5.5s.

(This has happened basically every week Ive been at the gym)

after yelling at a kid to get off the bouldering wall downclimb by telling them that they have to have a rope on.
"there's no rope on this wall..." duh...

to try and stop the back talk about the bouldering wall i started saying its for advanced climbers only
"I am an advanced climber i can get to the ceiling"

I've had parents get mad at me for bouldering because I'm "setting a bad example for the kids"

lauged a bit...

"Hey, so you're going climbing this weekend?"

me: "Yep"

"Do you go freeclimbing or do you use ropes?"

me:"Huh?"

"Because this one time (probably at band camp), I went freeclimbing up this one wall with those plastic thingies on and it was like 10 feet and I nailed it, without a rope. You should try it, its more EXtreme."

i feel kinda bad posting this one as it was a family member who said this.

I want to climb everest. and I just plain love climbing. When i told my aunt about the things I'm doing and that i wanted to climb everest, she said, "thats an unattainable goal. its so dangerous and its so expensive." right because nobody has ever climbed everest before right, because its "too dangerous and too expensive." HA!

She was talking about how incredibly difficult kilimanjaro was and how i'll never be able to make it up 14ers. I don't doubt that kilimanjaro was hard but i kindly stated that there are more difficult mountains to climb (K2, Everest, Annapurna, DUH!). She told me that on kilimanjaro she climbed a 200ft rock wall without ANY gear. no pro. no harness, rope, shoes, chalk, nothing. except her pack. I didn't have the heart to say this but that just sounds stupid.

now i'm no expert climber, i've been climbing for three months, but 200 feet with almost zero experience, and NO gear? that sounds like a prayer to the grave.

Can't bag 14'ers? Nonsense! Go do Mt. Evans. Round trip from summit register to car ~75 yards.

English girl watching me stepping out of the train with my Franklin crashpad at hand:
-ooooh I love your yellow suitcase!

A friend looking at a climbing magazine at home
-So they plan to climb this 800m wall? Impossible. There will be no oxygen up there!

My boss during my job interview
-So it says here you a rockclimber?
-Yes
-So do you climb?...I mean.. vertical walls?
-..um..yes
-well, I mean...completely vertical?
Funny though I got the job :)

This happened to my climbing partner who was traversing the main wall at the gym and a girl 16-17 said to him... (my partner is only 17)

Girl "You are climbing the wrong way"

My partner just ignored her and kept going, then made his way back down the wall

Girl "excuse me, you know you are going the wrong way?!?!?! your meant to climb up not across"

Partner "Its called bouldering love" in a real condesending voice

Q - How do you get the rope up there?

A - We have a harpoon gun and we shoot it to the top.

or

A - We tie it to a trained ground squirrel who runs it through a big bolt at the top for us.

(that always seemed to be the favorite question of wandering tourons at Veedauwoo. The squirrel answer was used only when one of the little beasties was scampering around on some 5.impossible, hoping for us to throw it a peanut).

Q - isn't it dangreous to climb on ropes?

A - yes it is. It's a good thing we aren't actually climbing on the rope, isn't it?

Q - how does the last person get down? (asked when they find you just coming off a rap)

A - Just like I did

Q - well, then who carries the rope down?

A - No one, we leave it there for the next party of climbers. (this usually said as last person down is pulling the rope ;p )

God Bless,
mik

Often heard in gyms.

'They could climb higher because they have that bag behind them (chalk bag).'
I then tell them that they could borrow one from the counter or offer my chalk bag to encourage them.

After failing again...
'It's cause they have those special shoes.'
Try to help them out by telling them they could rent shoes but explain that they don't really need climbing shoes for standing on big holds.

You hear someone letting out a primal scream while climbing then looking over to see that they are climbing a 5.8. Crazy

Someone walks in the gym, looks like at a climb and exclaims loudly 'That does not look like a 5.12'. Then proceeds to struggle on a 5.8

Climbing by the lake where tour boats pass by.
Tourists pointing at us shouting 'Look, climbers!'
We point back and shout 'Look, tourists!'

"Ya, this 5.12 is pretty hard"

"Its too easy" he says
the manager then replies, "Its hard when you do it in one color"
They newbie tries it with ONE color, and couldn't even get off the ground. He soon heads for the 5.5s.

(This has happened basically every week Ive been at the gym)

I've been to the gym when (on two separate occasions) some little kid is kinda following me, bouldering the routes that I just attempted. It took me a little while to realize that the kid wasn't looking UP to me, but more looking DOWN to me because he was just sending all of the routes I was succeeding/failing on.

Of course the kid at that point didn't know enough to stick to a route and was using every hold within reach, but it still hurt my ego a little Unsure

Back in '96 I was telling a co-worker about the Everest tragedy. I went into a long explanation of the hazards, techniques, and dangers associated with climbing the mountain. At the end, she asked me "Is Everest the one with all of the faces?"
I sat confused for a minute, and after realizing what she was talking about, I replied "You are thinking of Mount Rushmore."

How difficult can it be to climb Mt. Rushmore if there were dudes up there sculpting faces?

1) They keep calling us RAPELERS

A friend was belaying me from the summit of Urca's Hill. Tourists kept asking "did you go down here"
A: No, I came UP.

Watching monkeys on the sumit of Corcovado with the rope in my hands, a cab driver comes by:
¨Cool uh? and they rapel faster than you do!!"

---------------

2) They keep calling bolts as HOOKS

"But, those places you go, already have hooks, right?"
¨Do you put the hooks there?"
"Who puts the hooks there?"

You know how when you get down from Devils tower you get the normal questions about whats up there and how long did it take and then they ask if they can have a picture of you. So the last day we were there me and my buddies after climbing go up to some people and are like "Are you hikers?" They answer back with a confused yes. So we say "Well can we have a picture with you guys?" They seemed pretty confused but we were laughing are asses off

Not entirely true. Climbers are akin to "Natives of the Rock" rather than fat tourists who step outside of the car, snap a picture, and quickly jump back inside in the off chance that they might actually breathe something that is clean.

Certain people are supirior at different things. Sailing junkies are masters of the wind. Scuba junkies are masters of all-that-be-under-the-waves. Surfing junkies are masters of the waves themselves.

Rock junkies are masters of ..... the rocks! Heh, that rocks.

Anyhow, during the winter/fall/spring, I spend more of my awake hours climbing than I do in my home so I don't think it would be a terrible stretch to call the rocks my home. I think that many others here would be willing to make the same claim (well, maybe rock gyms are their home :p )

You've never felt a spiritual connection between yourself and nature when you climb?

And not superior in general, which you have a lovely way of puting words into my mouth, just that there are places where they are home. Tourists are by their nature, in a place where they are not home.

Of course I feel the connection and it sound like you do to. That does not make us any better than any other tourist. 99% of climbers drive to the mountains / climbing area, have thier fun and go home. Same as hikers, photographers, bird watchers ect.
My point isn't that we do or don't feel at home or close to nature or that we do or don't gain from our experience. My point is, we are no better than other people who are out there. I don't think you used the word but some one was saying "tourons". My point is, we are ALL tourons. Climbers are the same as everyone else who visits an area. We just find our enjoyment a bit more vertically.

Working with kids over the summer my favorite is:

non-cllimbing kid 1: Did you fall?
climber kid 2: yeah, a lot
kid 1: did it hurt?
kid 2: nah, the rope caught me
kid 1: what color was the rope?

When at a sport area in Alberta we overheard a father explaining lead climbing to his little boy....."See as they go up they climb up they anchor the rope to the calipers. You see all the holes in the rock, that's why they like climbing here...because makes putting the calipers in and out a lot easier" Crazy

I'm not sure if he was talking about the bolts, our quick draws or getting it mixed up with gear climbing, but at least he understood how we got the rope up there.

Not entirely true. Climbers are akin to "Natives of the Rock" rather than fat tourists who step outside of the car, snap a picture, and quickly jump back inside in the off chance that they might actually breathe something that is clean.

Get over yourself Crazy. That "fat tourist" you see and judge might be my out of shape grandfather. The one that spent 70+ years of his life hunting, fishing, hiking, and farming and knows more about nature than you ever will. God forbid he now has lung disease and can't walk very far. What a touron he is, and how cool you are.

wow that great lol

so working at a new gym now on campus. Most of the kids think that i dont know what im doing because i'm a freshman (lol). So i tie in this girl pick up the grigri and tell her she's on belay. she approaches the wall turns around and asks "so you know what you're doing right?" it amazes me how she was about to trust someone with that doubt in her head.

also the other night this guy starts telling me what all the tape is for because he thought i didnt know what i was doing. he tells me how he got this red one, "yea i followed the red tape see, i got all the way to there (pointing) before i had to grab that other blue rock to finish. It a good route" LOL

One evening in a social function, one girl asks the people in the group: "So, what do you guys do for exercise?"

One guy--probably trying to impress the girl--says, "Well, I lift weights."

So then I answered: "Me? ... I just lift my own weight ..."

To which the girl replied, "Haha ... Yes, I do that to ... I lift my own weight 300m every day to and from the Metro station ... You know, that's a LOT of WORK!"

And I replied, "(chuckles) Indeed ..." Laugh

This story is from the cute not dumb catagory:

I took my 5 year old to the gym for the first time with dreams of beginning a lifetime of climbing together. He got about half way up the wall and froze. He told me he was scared but would not let me lower him. I told him I would bring him down and he screamed "rock climbing is stupid". When he got to the bottom I asked if he wanted to try again. He said, "yeah, maybe when I'm like 15." There is always hope for his 3 year old brother...

Forget non-climbers, try climbers.

Upon seeing my partner a guy at the crag remarked that "She should get herself a pink rope."

He shut up after she flashed a route that he'd been hang dogging.

All right, this is something stupid a "climber" said, though I hate to call him that.

One day about two years ago, my buddy and I were climbing at Stoney Point, and some douchey boulderer who thought he was God’s gift to rock decided to attach himself to us for the day. Even though he wasn’t even that good of a climber, he was screaming out move-by-move beta on every problem we did. After about ten minutes I wanted break his wrists so he could never bother anyone on the rock again. The three of us turn a corner and BAM, walk smack into Michael Reardon. My buddy and I were slack-jawed in awe, but King Douche obviously had no idea who he was. Reardon stepped up to do a pretty stiff high ball, and this tool looks at him and says, “Hey, you want the beta for that problem?”

Doesn’t get much stupider than that.

I can't believe it, 8 pages and no mention of the worst of the worst. Let me explain.

My wife was introducing me to a friend and proceeded to tell this friend that I was a climber and mountaineer. She simplified the latter by stating that I climb mountains. Her friend looks at me and says. "Oh, like VERTICAL LIMIT".Mad

All of you elitist climbers can go to hell, because none of you are more or less valuable than a Big Gulp toting NASCAR fan yelling yelling questions to all of us "freehanders" as we "scale the mountain" at our local crag.

I couldn't agree more. In my opinion elitism of any kind is born from insecurity. Although, it doesn't hurt to have a laugh at someone's simple ignorance. As long as it's done with respect for the fact that we were all ignorant at some point. Never forget those early flailing gumby days, sometimes I miss them.

Oh no. No no no. It gets much worse than vertical limit. I take it you've never seen Sub Zero? Apart from all of the other plot holes (like climbing a K2 with trees on it without hat, gloves or goggles in order to retrieve a glorified Rubik's cube with the inexplicable power to destroy the world), it also makes heavy use of "piton guns" and mysterious life-saving "safety lines" (a la "oh my god, the avalanche is coming and going to pull us off the cliff - quick, use your safety line!")

Ironically, I think the only people who will ever get any enjoyment out of it will be climbers enjoying the idiocy of it all...

I didn't really have anything special to say until very recently... I dunno necessarily what this is but...

I climb very often at my local gym since I don't live somewhere where I can climb outside in the winter...

So today I was joking with a friend and solo'd some 40' easy peasy route... and I get to the top and then climb down and this middle-aged man comes over and says, "I don't mean to be an asshole, but don't do that again while I'm here"

Now... it's not necessarily a dumb thing for him to say... but... it's like... wtf? He wasn't an employee and had never been to the gym before ...

... please tell me you are trolling. If not, how old are you exactly? I've never been to a gym that would be even remotely okay with someone free soloing above shoulder height. Even if you think you know what you are doing, you have no idea what shape the holds are in and whether there could be spinners or not. And it's not just your own life you're putting at risk. What if you were to fall and land on someone?

Even if this "middle-aged man" didn't work at the gym, he probably still has a vested interest in not seeing it get shut down when a kid like you goes and does something stupid and then your parents somehow find a way to pin responsibility on the gym.

Also judging by your profile and ascent log I don't think you're at the level where you can get off calling anything "easy peasy."

Wow, you made a lot of assumptions in those two posts. Good work!

Added: To answer your question, I'm not a kid (under 18, even under 21) ... you are correct about the fact that most gyms don't let people go over shoulder height...

I'm sorry if this upsets you. And in regards to spinners etc: 1) I am aware of the risks, 2) most routes that are "easy peasy" that are indeed freaking "easy peasy" generally have sooo many effing jugs and massive gargantuan foot-holds that it's not an issue. I bet I could campus that entire route... in fact, tomorrow, I think I'll give it a shot

weak troll jmagnus. Learn make better jokes and indeed try to campus those route up until failure...

The dumb this non-climbers say are almost all the time the same. "You climb, but with or wothout rope?"

Much more funny are the dumb thing climbers say. Like this conversation between a climbing woman and her belaying man. She was struggling hard in a route and could not get any further. He responds to her moanings "I alway told you that you are way to fat"

Ouch...

So what's the specified height limit in your gym? That's really the issue here, and I doubt their policy allows anyone to climb 40 feet unroped. An issue aside from your personal safety is the added risk you subject other clients to. If I witnessed something similar, I'd call you out on it.
i called my airline that i am flying with tomorrow. here's the conversation.

Me: uh high, i hear you have some allowances for overweight luggage if the items are sporting goods.
Airline Rep: Well that depends. What are you bringing?
Me: Climbing equipment, like a rope and other climbing gear.
AR: Is it flammable?

Make-up your own dumb answers!
actually considering many climbers bring a stove for camping (which could also include fuel)... the question makes sense. In fact, even without the fuel it could be an issue. I had my msr whisperlite (without fuel) taken due to trace amounts of fuel in the fuel line. Luckily I was able to have a shop keeper ship it to me via us mail - AND it made it to me eventually.

Well then my apologies for assuming that only a 17-year-old could write things like "some middle-aged man" and "... but... it's like... wtf!?!" and clearly not understand the risk involved in what he's doing. Also I find it ironic how you just posted in another thread about how "Most of these accidents [that occur in rock gyms] are 9 times out of 10 someone being a dumbass." ......

Anyways, as far as other dumb things I have heard climber types saying goes... one of my favorites was overhearing two guys at my local crag arguing over whether a route they just sent was 5.8c or 5.8d . I didn't have the heart to say anything...

I heard (in a gym) 2 guys that were really quite full of themselves arguing over a similar thing: If the boulder problem they were climbing was a V2d or a V2e. LIke you, I didn't have the heart to say anything.

When I was in high school, I had a teacher that climbed (pretty damn good, too) and one day, after exams and all that gash when we were dossing about in class, kid draws a slightly diagonal line on the whiteboard and says "Hey, Mr Durran, could you climb somthing as steep as that?" he's like "yeah" then this kids like "I mean on the underside" "and I mean yeah." so kid draws like a million lines, each just slightly more steep than the previous, untill he gets to horizontal, which again the reply is "yeah" so this kid gets total rilled about it and starts being like "whoah, no way! no you can't!". dude was amazed, well funny.

It is true. The geologists are especially bad, given the number 'regular' words they use that have specialized meanings.

Okay, I could possibly see the 5.8c and 5.8d conversation, but I have doubts about the v2d and v2e boulderers. I have this feeling they were just doing it to mess with other climbers.

Looks like it worked.

I was setting up a TR and some guy came up behind me and said, "I don't understand why you're climbing this. I mean, you went around back and tied the rope to that tree right?"

Me: "Uh, yeah, kinda."

Him: "So why are you climbing it?"

Me: "Practice, I guess."

Him: "Oh, well, have you ever heard of climbing gyms?"

And then you killed him and stuffed his corpse behind a flake off route I hope.

"So do you shoot those things into the rock when you're climbing?"

No

"They don't have those things do they? Things that shoot ropes into the rock like on Bond?"

Putting up a climbing calendar in my cube is sure to bring more hilarity like this. Crazy

I showed my 83-year old neighborhood pictures of me climbing and his response was: " How did you get that rope to the top of the rock. Did you use one of those ropes with a hook on the end like ninjas have"

Little kid at a birthday party "Can you below me?" sounded just like blow me, nearly died.

Back when I worked at a climbing gym, kids rarely remembered the term 'belay' or even the phrase 'hold the ropes.' Conversation between a group of ten-year-old girls I was belaying for: "Can you do me here next?" "No, I want him to do me in the corner next." Luckily they caught the innuendo themselves before I ended up a registered sex offender for 'doing' a bunch of prepubescent girls (on their parents dime no less).

A family of four has hiked up to a climbing area for lunch. Unaware that my partner and I can hear them they begin discussing how we got the rope up the wall, and the function of quickdraws ('To grab on to')

I begin leading the next route, and the mother quickly catches on. As I am beginning the crux moves, I hear the light go on in her head

"So if he falls, it's going to be twice the distance past that metal thing."

My reply: " We generally don't think about those sorts of things"

It was a classic moment.

Last summer I spent some of my time in Bangor, ME. Whenever I had some free time, but not enough to climb, I'd boulder on this a watertower that's out there. Once, while I was trying to circumvent the tower, a group a second-graders were walking around with their teacher. A little girls asks her teacher
"What's that man doing?"
"He's practicing."
"Why?"
"So he can be big and strong when he climbs The Grand Canyon!"

My only advice for all of you is to stop talking shit about people who don't get what you're doing.
Yes, you may be able to sport climb 5.radical, but if you sit and spew garbage about non climbers, realize that those same folks would think of you as inferior (yet not judge) if you asked questions about things they were into, like being able to compose a sentence with good grammar, or operate on a sick little kitten.
Just because others don't get what you're doing gives you no reason to look down upon them.
The trend in this thread seems to be sport climbers, cool, but understand that while at a sport crag you are bound to encounter inexperienced folks, as sport climbing is the easiest, cheapest and safest way to 'climb'.
Even if the folks you come across are not climbers, give them the benefit of the doubt and remember that they would not talk shit about you were the tables turned. Maybe...(maybe you deserve it,self righteous fuckers)
Cheers, B-

Why do people get worked up about a few cheap laughs? Do you write angry letters to a comedian after he makes fun of Bush? Ignorant behavior/ statements are fun to poke fun at.

If you can't compose a sentence with proper grammar, and you're a normal functioning adult, then you deserve it; and I would perfectly expect it and accept it, as I have in the past.
