Sometimes I wish I had a nice 4WD truck. But then I realize how amazing the mileage I get on my lil Saturn is. I made it from Hollywood to Joshua Tree on a quarter tank of gas this weekend. And can make it to Yosemite and back in under a tank. What kinda mileage do you guys with trucks/SUV's get? I've always been curious. I know some of those things can cost $40 per fill up.

I drive an 03' Tacoma extended cab... not exactly a dirtbag climber yet... ;) (but it's a goal in the future...;) Anyway, I get roughly 17-20mpg... My local crag is about 50 miles north of Fairbanks, Alaska, where I live. It usually costs a little less than $10 roundtrip to the crag... (which means I bivy out there quite often... ;)

I've got a Honda CRV (smaller SUV) and I love it for climbing trips. It goes about 28mpg on the highway and costs about $25 to fill up. I can go round trip to Yosmite on a tank of gas. Plus you can lay the seats down and turn them into a bed. If its too nasty out you can sleep in the car very comfortably. I've put four people and all our camping gear in it with extra room. It also has picnic table stashed where the spare goes. Sweet car. Supposedly they are coming out with a hybrid someday. Has 80K miles on it and runs perfect. Taken it through snow and off roading in Death Valley, did grea. But you can't tow anything with it and I wouldn't ever thing about offroading in sand (only a V4) or deep snow.

In reply to: What kinda mileage do you guys with trucks/SUV's get? I've always been curious. I know some of those things can cost $40 per fill up. I drive a 1988 Isuzu pickup (4cyl, 2wd) and it's making more and more strange noises everyday. :) But...I got 26 mpg this past weekend and my tank is about 12 gallons..so that costs me about $18 to fill it up at current prices. Well I got a Z71 pickup a few months ago, the sticker said 14 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway which seems about right. Costs close to $40.00 to fill it up. I doubt that I could make it to JT or Yosemite on a tank full. Since I got rid of mustang cobra that only takes 93 octane, I don't feel the pain so much though.

02' Kawasaki KLR650....about 55-60mpg x 10 miles each way to the local crag x $1.80/gal of regular = about 60cents round trip. However, if you figure in all the other crap; payment, insurance, maintainence, registration, etc...your milage really doesn't amount to jack squat in the big scheme of things. I guess its good topic of conversation though.

I'm a road bum, so I have to balance fuel efficiency, storage space, and crag navigability. I decided on a '95 Chevy S10 with a light aluminum cab. It's four cylinders, so it gets great gas mileage (I drive the speed limit,) and it's enough of a truck that I can take it off road in Bishop. Of course, my mileage drops fast with every person I pile into the back for road trips to Utah.

I pull 40 miles per gallon on flat highways in my manual 92 Corolla. That translates into 400 miles for $12. Now if only I could consistently go 400 miles w/o bathroom breaks.......

98 Subaru Forester. Its rated at 19/26 MPG, but I've sometimes gotten around 28 MPG, especially if I'm not using AC or the heater. A small SUV/wagon like the Forester (or any of the other Subies), Honda CRV, or Toyota RAV4 are good choices for climbing if you don't need a ton of cargo room. While the all-wheel drive system does not give enough torque for serious off-roading like a true 4WD system; the AWD gives plenty of traction on slick highways, as well as muddy dirt roads. All these cars have decent clearance, so you won't bottom out on ruts or rocks as long as you are a bit careful. The also have the wicked Japanese reliablity (especially the Honda). If you really need the added traction of AWD or 4WD, a small SUV is a good compromise between mileage, cargo room, and traction. I gave up a 94 Chevy Blazer and am happy I made the change. For me, I have found that my Forester has enough cargo room 99.9 percent of the time, and I save a bunch at the gas pump. Plus, the Forester is fun to drive, handles more like a car, and the newer models come standard with side impact airbags.

In reply to: I've got a 91 Jeep Cherokee, costs about 28$ to fill, and gets 340 gallons to the tank, so about 19 miles to the gallon (18 gallons). Keep in mind it also has 220k miles on it :D That is SOME jeep! My 96 only holds 19 gallons. Where did you put the tank? I get 20 mpg, city or highway, morning, noon or night. It has the straight 6 cyliner 4 liter. Oh, it has 180,000 + mile on it, the vasy majority I am pleased to say, is recreation oriented! We also have a family van for kid moving capacity. And my wife's old car is a Saturn. It's a girls car through and through. It drives like crap and I'm ashamed to be seen in it, though I must admit it gets excellent mileage. Not because its a Saturn or a girl's car, but because its painted gold. If I had to commute I'd opt for the Saturn, embarrassment or no. Nothing, or perhaps I should say, few, things say "I am an emasculated man" than a guy driving his wife's gold sedan. Men don't guy gold sedans. And if they do..., check their pants. They may be a woman posing as a man! DMT

If I drive the Ford Focus 4 door hatch, I'm getting about 27-30 highway. 25 town. If I drive the Chevy Prism, I'm getting about 30-33 highway 30 town. Used to have an old 5 speed Chevy Sprint. Used to get almost 50mpg highway with that thing. Damn clutch went on it.

...mileage is inconsequential.....it's the hrs. per tank...when you are talkin 4wd. The bigger the tank the better. I can cruise for 11.5hrs at 70mph avg. without re-loading. Thats what counts!!! Go for the largest tank you can get. MR

I've got a 2003 Jeep Wrangler...gas mileage sucks. With the current prices here in San Diego (around $2.00 a gallon) it costs me about $30+ to fill it. I love the car (looks good) but hate the $$$ I'm putting in it...oh well. I've had Honda's and Saturns my entire life, it was time for an impractical car! 8)

In mentioning small SUV's, the best of the lot was omitted. Chevy Tracker, $16k loaded, 26 mpg, ($87 Indy to Boulder) real (part time, high and low in the transfer case) 4WD that'll climb with a CJ7, full ladder frame, two comfy reclining seats (way better than a thermarest on the ground) and a pair of welded lugs front and rear for hauling the wish-they-wuzzes out of the mud. It'll carve three foot sustained snowdrifts, and mine's done Nellie Creek, Engineer Pass, Henson Creek North Fork, Schaffer Gulch (twice) Cinnamon Pass, (too many times to count) and the secret 4wd road to TK's free camping spot.

Last year I had a miata and rented a room in Yosemite. It was cheaper than running the Tacoma. No kidding.

2001 Dodge Ram Quad Cab Short bed - highway, I get ~ 20 mpg, which gives me ~ 350-400-and-change miles to a full tank (I've never driven far enough in one leg to empty a full tank, yet. :( ) Round-trip to e-rock, is 203.2 miles, which costs rouchly $15 in gas. - d.

I have a full size f150 extended cab that gets about 20 mpg highway. The mileage bites, but I make up for it in saving hotel cost and sleeping in the bed. The capped bed is nice when the weather is bad and I can haul all kinds of creature comforts.

I've got a 96 Disco' that's gets about 15 mpg -- but only use it when I need real 4wd -- my trusty pos 94 Saturn gets me to 90% of the places I need to get to climb (including off roading!). Less than thirty bucks roundtrip to yosemite.

In reply to: I've got an older "suv", a 1978 fj40 I get about 14-17 MPG Nice truck, I love old toyotas. Great vehicles with lots of neat little things not always found in other brands. I'm looking for an older Lcruiser or an Early Bronco or flat fender jeep but I'd prefer to have somewhere to work on it before I go investing in another money pit.

I've only read a few post on the thread but it seems like it's gonna get messy in there. I get about 29 with a canoe, 34 with skis or bikes, and about 35 with just the bare rack on top. Maybe 37 rackless. To the Gunks that's a little less than 1.5 gallons, to the Daks it's anywhere from 2 gallons to 3 gallons. Smugglers it's 5 gallons, and N. Conway it's 6 gallons. Basically, I can go anywhere in the Northeast US or southern quebec/ontario on about a tank of gas or in Northeast gas dollars about $22 in gas.

Don't buy an SUV. I've had a 1992 Jeep Cherokee Sport with the 4.0L 6-cyl engine and it's bleeding my dry on the gas. I'm pretty sure I've got a 70L tank and it will take me about 400km So let's see here....250 miles 15.4 gallons.... 16.2 miles per gallon? Sucks.

Ive got a 1973 Dodge van. It is huge and gets horrible gas mileage, but I love it anyways. I get like 15-17 miles at any given time, which is better than most older vans because mine is a stick shift, but how many trucks out there can comfortably sleep 5-6 people in it? With that many people in there, gas costs get divided and go down quick. Road trip baby!

 I Just bought a Jeep Cherokee Sport cause I've always wanted one. They aren't making them anymore so it was now or never. Anyway, I took it on it's first trip this weekend and it was great. Cleveland Ohio to Boone North Carolina. I got 360mi per tank. I was surprised. I didn't think the mileage would be that decent. Im happy with it.
