Aha! freakin posers. I can't stand "fake" people. People who say they do things that they don't do to look cool bother me. I met a guy once who called himself a climber that had climed ONCE...in a gym...many years ago :roll:

there are a hundred climbers at my high school. Most of them climb because they want to be cool. That pisses me off.
I don't climb to be cool. I don't climb to be popular. I definately don't climb to be trendy. Hey, I don't even climb because I'm good (cuz I'm not). I climb because it's fun!

They don't think they are 'fake' it's just that we know you gots to have experiences before you call yourself a climber.
They ain't climbers.
Hell, I only became a climber this season after twisting my ankle on a hiking descent. This after having been using ropes for ascending rocks since the 80s.

Actually it could. If some idiot that can't place a nut correctly decides to lead trad at my favorite crag and dies it affects me. Not only will my parents be even more weary of me climbing but the area could be closed. Tis already in danger.
These people I'm speaking of are the people that decide that climbing looks fun and they run into it like it is basketball or soccer. They don't take the time to learn how to do things properly and that puts them in danger and (sorry to sound like a dick) areas in danger of being closed. It doesn't matter why they climb as long as they learn to do it correctly, but if they're not serious about it, they aren't going to put forth the effort to learn correctly.

bang on dude, there was a quarry near me where there was summin like 75+ routes then some retarded teenage prick (yes i realise that i am one and therefore a hypocrite) decided to boulder round the base by the lake in the centre he fell and drowned now the area is patrolled by guards 24/7 stupid pricks :evil:

Posers piss me off, because nobody else knows they're posers. Everybody thinks they are as cool as me, when they don't know what the word "lead" means.

I live with it, and I never see any of them at the crags, so it all works out well. :lol: :lol:

I have seen this before the "posers" are usually people more concerned with the idea of being a climber than actually climbing. I guess they like to impress people. Also this syndrome usually goes along with tons of PrAna stuff, especially those stupid beanies.

i guess i am lucky because i have not met one other climber yet at school without previously knowing them from school.
I love climbing and just to climb but it is really fun when a big football jock makes fun of me for being really skinny and then i challenge him to a pull up contest.
Big strong LB that benches 280 versus me, weak puny rock climber
him 10 pull ups.

LOL there is only 2 climbers at my highschool! Me and my boyfriend!! Some people act like it, but like you said, they think you mis pronounced "lead" for led.. as in a pencil! I bring my nalgene to school everyday and it has webbing on it to carry it... the 1st day of school no one knew what a nalgene was... now like 50 people have them... I feel like I started a trend, but at the same time I liked being the only one with one...

eh I disagree. Its a style He likes. If the people don't climb, i doubt having a nut on a necklace is going to impress them; "dude you lead trad?" They won't know what it is. Do skaters wear DC Shoes and element shirts because they are "Cool shirts" or they like the brand. Chances are if they skate on element decks or use their DCs to skate, they like the brand. Nothing wrong about wearing clothes from a brand you like.
especially if under those clothes you have...
personality.
Now, for those of us who lack one, thats a different story. ;)

Yeah, my friend actually got it from someone at his work. He was telling him how to get to his house so he could mow his lawn. He just used it casually and never explained himself, just left it at that. I'm not sure if the lawn was ever mowed.

I'm so paranoid about being "that guy" (read: poser) that I go out of my way to NOT wear anything climbing/backpacking related to work or school. The nalgene/biner thing is everywhere now and means nothing. So, since I know real climbers think that everyone with a nalgine with a 'biner clipped on is a poser, I don't use a nalgene except in outdoor situations so they won't assume I'm a poser... weird logic but who gives a flip. Why would I need a liter of water in a non breaking container at school or work anyway.
As to the prissy girl wanna-climbers... I wish we had more of those around here. I need a girl who is 1) hot and 2) not a better climber than me who *thinks* she's a climber. In such a case I'd be guaranteed to impress her, since, as you said, she can't really climb. Pull of some 5.11 or so (5.12 is reallly pushing me at this point) then ask her to climb it. When she falls off the 20th time 3ft up, I'm set for at least 2 dates ;-).

You know who I really hate are those people who climb mountains to enjoy the view. Ohhhh and sport climbers who don’t lead 5.12, and trad climbers who don’t aid, Ohhhh yaaa top ropers who “say” they climb but really only move upwards on rock and try not to fall. Not to mention supposed “climbers” that only own one pair of shoes.
When I first read this I thought it was a troll! Maybe I have been out of highschool too long but who cares if they say they are climbers. Is it because it cheapens your status? I thought you were climbing for the climb, but now that is cheapened so I guess you’ll have to go back to finding a new hobby that can make you special. Maybe Fencing?
Nalgene bottle are some of the few on the market that don’t make your water taste like plastic, now come in cool colors, and are catering to a wider market. Again….who cares.
Stop thinking you are so elite.

My responces were all serious. I personally dont like having too much attension on me and so I dont especially like to stick out to much. The fact that I wear a bath robe to school aside, I dont care if there are a lot of climbers/posers at my school. What bothers me is the posers that get themselfs killed and ruin the statistics. In the back of "Accidents in north american mountaineering" they should differenciate how many posers die and how many cllimbers die.

True. I'll back down at this point. I haven't heard of many... er... any posers getting into accidents, but i have heard posers talk. And the way they talk it's a good thing alll they do is talk because they really dont know what they're talking about.
But I will agree that this is a pointless conversation. Who cares who pretends to climb or not. Once I do hear about a poser getting into an accident I will take back my previous views about posers.

I've been outta high school a long time too. It's so strange to hear about how all the dynamics are still the same though. Back in my day there was no such thing as a climbing gym so I guess I never had to deal with climbing to make yourself cool issues. They don't take the time to learn how to do things properly and that puts them in danger and (sorry to sound like a dick) areas in danger of being closed. It doesn't matter why they climb as long as they learn to do it correctly, but if they're not serious about it, they aren't going to put forth the effort to learn correctly.
I would agree but then when some like me does try to lean im called a gym rat or pussy sport climber. cant have it both ways (not to say it was you who called me that)

Is it just me or are we lacking a serious amount of apathy here.
1. As sad as it is, I'm gonna be coldhearted here and say, if someone dies at the crag due to inexperiece and incompetence, then our gene pool is better as a result of it. Elimination of the dumbest.

Why limit what people do. I've found anyone who accuses that is as shallow as the stereotype. They just assume depth.
And before anyone argues the point that, if I don't care, why am I arguing, I enjoy arguing for the sake of it :wink:

Really. This thread is preety rediculous. But on the flip side it does have quite a bit of merit. Merit that is there and so I wont bother repeating it. I think I am being swayed more to the views of "who cares whether they're climbers or not. How does it effect you?" My main gripe was that I dont want people dying for fear that the areas will be closed. 3 people were reported to have died climbing in utah in 2002. I guess I can't be all to paranoid about the gate buttress being closed due to an idiot dying.

Thankfully, I've met a lot of climbers who've been doing this for a while but are still willing to take a newbie under their wing and help them become the kind of climber they want to be.
Maybe these "princess poser wannabes" would really like to improve but don't have the contacts to get out on the crag and learn on real rock.

I'm more into posing myself. You know, been climbing since december 2002, climbing outside since July 2003. Plus, I own a nalgene. Posing is waaay easier than actually going out side and gettin dirty. The other kids at my high school just don't understand.

The whole problem with sort of idealogy is that you think that being a "climber" puts you into some social club and gives you the right to put down others because of a) how good they are b) what clothes they wear and c) the reasons they climb. If want to classify yourself as a "climber" you fall into the trap always associated with stereotypes. Don't be a "climber." Be yourself. Climb. Enjoy it for what it is, not what it makes you..in this case "cool." And please, from another woman climber, don't ever put down other women climbers because you see them as betty belays. Just because we chose to climb with men doesn't mean we are posers too.

My foriegn exchange student is on the only fencing team in TN.... if I wanted to I could be on it.. but hell its not as cool as climbing.. I climb because I love it, and climbing rocks! ( no pun intended!

wow, never thought this topic would be that big of a deal, but seriously, i wear climbing shirts from prana not because i am a climber, nor am i sponsored, i like the style of the shirts and the fact they dont fall apart.
I proudly have worn my adidas shirt shorts socks and other stuff to local crags and my gym. Why because I play soccer and adidas has some of the best stuff around.
I really dont do anything to impress other people. This society is becoming so about looks and everything else. I am frankly sick of it, its like ooo loook at me and how good i am, BAH. I set a problem up at the gym and I didnt brag about it nor even mention the fact I set it. When the one guy asked who the climb was put up by because it was a nice moderate problem that flowed well, i then said i set it up. So far I have asked a whole 3 people to try the problem just to see what they think of it to see if I set it good.
Do what you like to do for fun and for no other reasons.

I've really got a kick out of this thread. It always seems to be the folks who have very recently joined an activity who complain the loudest about how popular it becomes, posers, etc. As if the cap should have been placed immediately after they join up.
No offense to the OP, but you've been climbing less than a year. Why get all elitist with the folks who may be intrigued by climbing but who don't do a lot of it. Are you terribly far removed from them? You keep saying you don't mean to upset people, but you're basically saying, "Hey climbers, aren't we so much cooler than wannabe-climbers and other folks?" Not really.
And what's up with people complaining about others carrying Nalgene bottles? "Why would a non-climber be carrying that?!?" Um, to transport beverages in a tough, reusable container? Nah. Most be posers.

People like that do piss me off. I have only been climbing for 6 months not, and I have already met this one guy who said he use to climb all the time. I brought him to a wall, and he didn't even know how to climb in. Lets just say when he made it to the top, it was a quick belay down. :)

some day, take the time out to count just how many ppl pose to be certain things they arent. if i had a pie for every person i met who claimed be a boulderer i'd be one richpie dude. but these are also ppl that its fun to mess with, just throw out a term or start talkin bout a tight climb...hehe then watchtheir confused looks grow on ther faces. you see.. the things that a REAl climber finds stoke'n arent the same as a poser. they cant feel what WE do.

Holy cow, I just realized that I followed all your guyzez foot steps. I have nothing better to do than argue about this crap. Baically this is what I see:
The younger generation: Wah Wah... Everyone says they are a climber but they are not b/c I have been climbing for 4 months they have been climbing for 1!!! HOLY SHIOTE!!!
The Older Generation: Just climb to climb, dont worry AT ALL about what people think of you and your status.
Here is my opinion. Both groups have valid points, but you gotta get into each groups midset.
The younger people are perterbed b/c they have found a sport that they love. And they are looking for something that makes them stand out from the rest of the crowd. Climbing makes you stand out. Right now they like it b/c its really fun and the title climber comes with a certain image wether you like it or not. Now when everyone else gets in on it, well then it's not AS great anymore in terms of title. They still like climbing the same but now the image has been de-valued a little. It's the same reason rich people buy Ferrari's rather than a Honda civic, the civic is way more common and tons of people have one.
And the older people are correct as well. They have been young and experienced (maybe) this stage and have grown past it, it's called maturing. They dont need that image to make them happy, they have found their place in the world, so they disrgard the image thats comes. And they have really learned what this sport is all about, not the image, but the activity. Just climb, everyone will learn what it's all about some day.

i only know of like 5 ppl at my school that climb and i know that cause i got them into climbing i have taking alot of my friends climbing and they say they like it but not enought 2 go again. and those girls who are prissy and are calling themselves climbers who cares they are dumb if they want 2 call themselves climbers ask them 2 go climbing with you. if the refuse than be like ur not a climber a climber never rejects a offer 2 climb if its possiable 4 the climber 2 go. dont let them tell u they are a climber make them prove that they are a climber. it doesnt matter if they cant climb a 5:6 if they area climber they will at least try. who cares how many falls they take at least they are trying. we all were new climbers at one time just cause some people have been climbing for years doesnt mean that they have the right 2 trash new climbers. i think that all climbers are kinda like a big family its not very often you find a mean or rude climber. im not saying there are none but mostly everyone in this sport is really nice. so y not just give everyone a chance 2 learn. about about the stupid bottles who cares its just a bottle of water.

I generally don't get worked up over what people do are say about themselves. I'm also not a "climber cop". If someone wants to call themselves a climber, how does it affect anyone else? We aren't in a club. They don't get special discounts. They aren't benefiting themselves and discounting you in any way what-so-ever.
