I am not sure, exactly. However, if you are using "liters per problem sent" instead of "problems sent per litre" you are probably going to be in trouble. 8^)

ok, got this problem from my math class that is just killing me. i am completely stumped!!
so this is it. two men board two different trains at two different times in two different countries. one is traveling north @ 55kmh, the other south @ 64kmh. the first man is on a train with two engines pulling 10 cars, the second is on a train with one engine pulling 11 cars. if train one gets to hamburg at 2:00 in the afternoon, and train three gets there @ the same time, what color shirt is man one wearing?

I have found, through years of experimentation, that harnesses have limited utility while bouldering. 8^)

Is there a negative relationship between amount of Scotch consumed and climbing ability? Is there a unit of Scotch where even Class 1 becomes too difficult?
As a current college student and an aspiring bum, the possibility of this effect has been plauging me.

Actually, if you check out the back of the books "So Long" and "Mostly harmless" were listed by Douglass Adams as part of "the ever growing Hitchhikers Trilogy" but then again the guy was a comedian. Now for a Climbing Question:

UIAA rope testing methods are severe and rightly so. As a climber, you will never experience even one standard UIAA rope test fall in your climbing carreer. Because lead ropes are certified for multiple fall ratings, climbing ropes never break when in use. The only exception to this, which I have recently become aware of, is the breaking of a single climbing rope that was exposed to battery acid.

how do know 42 is the answer to "what is the meaning of life, the universe, etc."? i thought the the question to which 42 is the answer is unknown, but i don't remember if i read all the books, so i may have missed the question. and if that is the question, isn't that a bit of disappointment? so ho-hum.
also, which is a better place to spend a few weeks this summer: boulder or phoenix?

Ive never seen lets make a deal so im not sure on how the game works but... i would say he would have to switch because by switching he would increase his probability of getting the right door to 2/3 as opposed to 1/3... but if that fails he could walk around with the goat hoping they are opposite sexes and the feral moans of a goat in heat would give away the answer.

I think Clausti is right about his island in Hawaii... although its spelt Mauna Loa (day have dyslexic a). If i recall from my history classes its like 15 - 17 km (i cant remeber exactly)in evelavtion although most of that is pushed below the ocean floor.

Close. Its actually Mauna Kea, which is near Mauna Loa on the big island of Hawaii.

Well, let's see. I had the opportunity to take a job in LA, involving a huge pay increase in 1981, with Tahquitz, Suicide, Rubidoux, Joshua Tree and Yosemite basically in my backyard--or I could stay in MN amd freeze my ass off for six months out of the year.......

hehe. Dude, curt, Mac is another humanities student, she just may like Klein's book. I've been using it for a lot of stuff lately as I prepare for my comp exams.

Academics in the climbing community are incredibly rare. We all how many engineers, scientists, and mathmaticians climb, and not infrequently we hear about how they apply their logical, left-brained analysis to their climbing. The sciences are conducive to climbing.
However, we never hear about professors in history, english, philosophy, or anthropology that climb. There are very few. There have even been a few times as I sit through seminars listening to fellow students and professors hedge around problems, using unnecessary complicated words, and accomplish absolutely nothing intellectually, that I sometimes wonder if being an academic is somehow NOT conducive to climbing.
Would we push forward through the crux, or would we simply sit around talking about it?
So yeah, that's why I was so stoked when you told me about Klein: tenured professor at a very reputable institution, who is also a hell of a climber.
And his book r00lezzzzz.

NH is cooler than UT for all of the following reasons and many more:
-Easier access to Beer and other staples of a climber's life (whatever they may be)
-The temperature is lower
-There are no "anti-cruising" laws in NH
-The traffic lights don't beep at you
-Fewer people will try to get you to join their religion and bring all your dead relatives with you
-The lakes don't have salt in them
-Having tried to sleep in a car in both states, I can tell you that fewer people will hassle you in NH
-If people do hassle you in NH, they are less likely to be armed
-Orin Hatch does not live in NH

I returned to this thread because this is a SERIOUS QUESTION, requiring a SERIOUS ANSWER. First of all "scotch" means different things to different people. For instance, to me blended scotch isn't really scotch at all, in spite of the fact it is Scottish. Go figure. So, we are talking about single malt whisky here, OK?
There are distinct regional differences found in the malts distilled in the four major regions of Scotland. There are lowland malts, which are rather light and somewhat resemble Irish whisky. There are the Highland malts, which vary considerably, but (in general) are more distinctive than the lowland malts and often have flavors that result from ageing the whisky in Oloroso Sherry barrels, or Port barrels, etc. Next are the island malts, from Islay, Skye, the Orkneys, etc. which charactaristically exhibit intense smoky flavor, resulting from the use of local peat to halt the germination of the barley. Last of all are the Campbeltown malts, which are in their own distinct class. So, you will really have to see which type (or types) of these malts appeal to you personally.
In spite of that caveat, here are a few suggestions for you:
Everyday drinking: 10 year old Springbank (Campbeltown), 12 year old Macallan (Speyside - highlands), or Highland Park from the Orkneys.
Special occasion drinking: 25 year old Macallan (about $400 per bottle and in my opinion, the very best malt available) or 25 year old Glenfarclas (at $150 a bottle, about 1/3 the cost of the Macallan) which is almost as good and is similarly aged in Oloroso Sherry casks.
To impress people: Well, either of the two above should get the job done. If you want to impress me, you can buy the bottle of 1946 Macallan that is on sale at the store near me, where I buy my whisky. It is only $3,000 and I will help you drink it. Haha.

By far and away, the climber I learned the most from was John Stannard. John Gill was another huge influence on my climbing carreer, but of course, that influence was more related to bouldering. As far as "favorite" goes, there are many, many climbers that I have enjoyed climbing with and continue to enjoy climbing with.

It's apparant that the term "emos" is similar to what "goth" means, albeit with a particular modification that is only meaningful to those who apply the term or felt the need for it. I think quite possibley for you and me Curt, we could lump all those kids into the group labeled "little fuckheads".

When I was in high school in Utah ten yeas ago it was all metal heads, ska boys, ravers, grungers, and straight edgers.
No emo back in them days, although Sunnyday Real Estate did give a local concert. I think they later became total emo bedwetters.

Yeah, I wear baggy jeans and frequent coffee shops myself. I thought the devotion to a particular type of music and the drivel it embraces was the core of the emo thing, like goth kids wanting to be vampires and get all into death stuff, way cool. Speaking of sort of proto-goth kids, my brother once knew a kid named Danny he met in art class. Danny knew some punk kids who reportedly robbed a grave of an elderly man and put it in their attic and named Gramps. This is the sort of thing I think would later appeal to goth kids to do. I'm surprised there was not a fad like this.

I have gotten snowed out a couple of times at Red Rock that time of year, so it will all depend on the weather. Do the first 7 pitches and rap, rather than topping out and doing the walk-off. Supposedly, that's the better option.

The swirling effect is what gives us the rotation of tropical storms such as hurricanes, typhoons, cyclones and of course last but not least tornadoes.
Cyclones rotate for the most part in a clockwise direction in the southern hemisphere much in the same way as water swirls down the toilet in a similar fashion of clockwise. This is of course reversed in the northern hemisphere to being counter clockwise.

Hahaha, as Papua New Guinea is the nearest foreign country to our state of Queensland (we share a border) I keep abreast (pun intended) of our neighbours. I`ve seen pics of those women with their babies on their backs and I kid you not that the babies are using their mothers breasts to feed from whilst still strapped to their backs. Those things are like razor strops. They pick their boobs up and fling them over their shoulders to keep them out of the way. A kid will be feeding on one while a pig feeds on the other, I am not joking.
Pigs are virtually the cash econonmy of Papua and so if a pig is orphaned a mother will feed it herself.

Where did you come up with the less than 1% number, Most estimates say that approximately 10% is gay or bisexual. You don't have to approve of the lifestyle. You don't have to consider it moral. You don't have to beleive that it is a genetic, not learned, trait. But, as global and US citizens, you have an obligation to accept diversity. Tolerate at least. And how is it shoved down our throat? Just ignore it if it bothers you, but don't persecute others because of it.

Who`s persecuting who here, where did that come from?
The ten percent figure comes from the now widely discredited Kinsey report. The true figures are less than 1%.

what on earth are you talking about? i don't recall ever seeing any petitions to ban straight marriage.
i have a question curt that is much more important than this religious fundamentalist crap. i'm moving into a new house with a full bar downstairs. i want to stock it with a good selection of whiskys that represent different regions and characters of scotch well. so far i have a bottle of macallan 25yr(i broke down and had to buy another bottle - you can get it for $290 at applejack in denver), a bottle of lagavulin 16yr, a bottle of talisker 10yr, and a bottle of bowmore 12yr. what do you suggest i get to complement that? maybe 4-5 additional bottles.

Well, diversifying by region is always good. I would suggest a bottle of Springbank, the premier Campbletown malt, a bottle of Highland Park from the Orkneys, and a bottle of Edradour from Pitlochry (the smallest distillery in Scotland) and my favourite of all the distilleries I have visited.
Then perhaps double up on either good Speybank or Islay malts. If you prefer Speybank, I would recommend either a bottle of Glenfarclas or Glenlossie (if you can find it) or, if you prefer the smokier Islay malts, go for a bottle of Ardbeg.

If you actually care about your scotch selection and don't want to drink the same 15 or so name brands over and over until you die from boredom, and don't care that guests will not see fnacy lables, may I recommend you either purchase re-bottlings of single-cask (scotts selection, etc. any decent store can help you, or I would be happy to) or, better yet, join the scotch malt whisky society. (www.smwsa.com) I have been a member for a number of years. You get access to HUNDREDS of bottlings from every region, shipped to you undiluted, non-chilfiltered, single cask, cask-strength. Tasting notes are available. When someone comes to your house, find out what they like, and then use your experience with these remarkeable whiskies to give them a treat they will be amazed by. The opportunity to dilute (with correct water, of course) to an appropriate nosing proof or drinking prrof is remarkeabble, as is the option of tasting at cask strength and diluted, experiencing the difference in the nose and moutfeel as different strengths are attained. otherwise, go with Curt's selections and recommendations. They are all quite good.
The smws whisky is not cheap, averaging around 90-100 a bottle, but they are simply amazing. If you have not had the pleaseure of drinking indivisually selected cask-strength non-chillfiltered scotch, you are missing out. if you are ever around CT, I'd be happy to share a dram or three with you.
Edit: To further agree with Curt, if you do buy springbank, buy a bottle of every age they have available. It is one of the most intriguing vertical tastings I have ever had the pleasure of taking part in. Old springbank is hard to find...good luck!!

Yes, I think they do, and see a country they still love rejecting it to such a vile degree that they stated (most speaking in hyperbole, I imagine) this extreme position.
The fact that a decent percentage of the populace supports writing bigotry into the constitution based on their own morality is simply unacceptable to another decent percentage.
HOW DOES GAY MARRIAGE/RIGHTS affect you?? You don't have to find it moral. But why must you make it illegal? Why should people in love and dedicated for life have less rights than you because you think they are doing something immoral?
What if the religios right said that having the hair color you have makes you less of a person, and you should not be allowed to marry. If the majority agreed, you would just accept it, right? Thought so.

I do believe you are missing the difference between tolerance/diversity and blind acceptance. If a person is harmed, or rights UNDER THE LAW are infringed, then it is not a matter of tolerance. If a person is considered "winning" in the home, then yes, that is a matter for the religion, and should be tolerated. If, for example, a woman can be diverced inside the religion for disagreeing with her husband, that's her religion. I might not lie it, but its hers. If she tries to get help from the courts, because this is against the family law where she lives, then the court must apply the law of the land fairly, regardless of her (or his) religion. If religios doctrine is allwoed to run the law, then the taliban is right, and we are wrong. Same goes for the debate re: homosexualtiy. The law must not be driven by some group's take on religious doctrine.

I have done each of those problems a zillion times or so. IMO, White Rasta is only a "great" problem because it is a highball. Stem Gem is good, but IMO, not as good as SNL. That's the thing about opinions though..... I am glad you had fun there anyway.

Well, if you are drinking a fine single malt, the attention one gives to the nose often (in my case anyway) is best achieved with eyes closed, so not recommended while driving (that's just not safe). Also, an open glass can be spilled far too easily. So, IMHO, for on the road scotch, I recommend something not too high-level to be enjoyed out of a flask or even the bottle. JW Black, if you must go to a blend, or a Glelivet 12 would do nicely, and is young enough to survive the onslaught of the taste-killing flask or the aroma-killing small opening of the bottle. You might do well to look into the bargain-priced single malts, such as McClelands (I may have spelld that wrong), they have a nice assortment of Highlang, Lowald, and Islay whisky that is robust enough for the above task.

The guy at the desk later realizes that the room was only $40, so he sends his son to give the climbers the $5 change. The son, knowing that there are 3 people in the room, can't figure out how to divide $5 three ways, so he gives them each $1 and pockets $2. So lets do the math on this. Each climber paid $15, but got $1 back so they paid $14. Three people paying $14 each equals $42. Add the $2 the son kept and that adds up to $44. What happened to the extra dollar?

Hey Curt there is this girl I like, she is pretty and intelligent. I have taken her climbing with me and I hang out with her almost everyday at school and we have a blast together, always laughing and goofing around. She seems to be resisting all my advances though she has admitted that she has had a crush on me in the past. I have already ask her 'out' so to speak, twice. What should I do? Some people have suggested that maybe she is just afraid of commitment I mean the semester is over in a month and she will be going home for 2 or 3 months before fall semester starts so that might be understandable. But to outright deny me twice? I mean I am a pretty ok looking guy, applying to medical school etc. etc. I mean I can even climb 5.12 haha... I am not a total schmuck. So what's the deal? Should I just try and accept the fact that we are friends even though I have a crush on her or should I be persistent?

I'd say head out west, if you have never climbed out here--and if you can still swing it, financially. As a fall-back position, I would at least try to spend some time in the Gunks. The Gunks are fantastic.

Actually, I don't boulder much in the Gunks. I usually go there to do routes. I like all the climbs on the slime wall a lot.

When Curt comes online, he may have a better answer than I....but i reprised it because I noticed that our black sheep, good ole Nolan 14 has returned to the fold.
He made a comment about someone smearing his bad name...to a thread that was a haf year old. But...I couldn't resist seeing what our boy had been up to, re-wise. So, I clicked on his "all Posts Made By" button, and saw this one, as his last...

He also had a desperate plea for examples of "Great Lycra", I instantly thought of your photo and directed him to it. Did anyone else notice how Urban Climber magazine seems to have a blatant ripe-off of the Ask Curt/Ask a n00b threads? Something called "Yo Joe" or something or other. The article consists of people asking stupid questions and him giving a stupid answer...
Not that the idea is all and all original in the first place but... hmm

No, wood is a living organism until man cuts it off at the knees and uses it for his beck and call.
An average SG is just that, an average of a specific type of wood.
I will except a 10% variation in answering that question, however I will be less lenient in my second favorite color category; i.e. if it were fuschia, then lavender or pomegranite would not be acceptable substitutes.
Curt, of course, realizes the gravity of these questions.

That depends on the scotch in question. The swill that BVB normally drinks can indeed benefit from the addition of a little ice. The good stuff, however, is best served neat--in a brandy snifter. 8^)
And, no, I'm not a huge fan of Laphroig. I prefer Lagavulin, Bowmore or Ardbeg for Islay malts.
