hi guys,
i'm 17 and i've learned all my limited skills at a r.c. gym. i'm a louisiana boy who loves the thrill of the problem but i've only tried myself once on real rock; not because of fear or doubt, i'm merely deserted in a land of swamp, without a hill in sight (much less a cliff, or ever a simple boulder.) i'm so jealous of all you people who practically grew up in a harness with the sky your only boundary. i'll be lucky if i get to feal the cold rock in my struggling fingertips even once more before the summer's gone. i just wondered if anyone else had the same problem. if you are, how do you cope with being geographically isolated from ROCK?

Well, where I am there is some good climbing within about an hour and a half, but since I have no car or liscence and no one to bring me, I'm basically stranded too. For me the next best thing is buildering. Luckly I do get to go on a few road trips every summer. See if there are any programs in your area that offer outdoor excursions, like outward bound sort of things, they might offer climbing trips that you could sign up for. If you look hard enough I'm sure you can find something. Good luck!

Study hard to get into a college in a climbing town.

Also, a job helps.

Failing that, ganja.

Hey, I live in Arizona and am surrounded by rock, but it's all closed off to the public since our entire state is on fire-danger lockdown. so I can kinda feel your pain

Sorry for you man, but you still have your whole life to look forward to living or traveling somewhere rocky!
I had a chance right after I made it out here to WY in '88 to move to NE for a job I'd always wanted (Firefighter/Medic). One of the main reasons I didn't take the job was that I'd just taken up climbing (@ age 33) & was really starting to love it. And how many cliffs are there in all of Nebraska?
Hang in there; your time is coming.

My advice to you is, once you get your licence, convince your parents to let you go where you want. This could take some time though, cause it took my parents 2 months to let me leave the city limits.

What about socialy stranded. I live in Las Vegas most of the year and only have a few partners despite the awesome rock. What gives, why are there so many freak show people living in my town and so few climbers?

As far as geographicly stranded goes, I just can't feel your pain. God gave you legs, use them. Don't live your life on what you mommy and daddy want, you got your own needs to fill. Take responceablity for yourself. I knew a dude in high school who got tired of the dump he was living in and got on his cheesy Wal-Mart bike and rode to another state for a few months. He had absolutely no money, but he sure had fun. Surely you have a distant relitive living near a rock worth climbing you can visit for a while. Old people are suckers for company, you might as well exploit them while they are still alive.

Remember, adventure is just another way of saying you did what you wanted and survived.

I'm stranded in a sea of sagebrush and sandy hills. The only time I ever went climbing outside was at Spring Mountain in Oregon. Dad and I woke up at 4AM, drove for a couple of hours, and ate breakfast at McDonalds. Once we reached our destination we hooked up with some of my dad's work friends, took a walk, ate, and went climbing. Oops! There I go remenising again. Chances are I'll be lucky if I so much as see another climbing spot by the end of the summer. We've got some good stuff within a couple hours driving. However, I can't drive myself, have no climbing buddies, neither my dad nor myself have any real belaying experience, and I have no clue whether anyone I know would be willing to take me!
Enough of me being pathetic. At least I have the little room in the court club with those 18ft. top-roping routes. I get to go twice a week! Guess I am kinda lucky.

I'm sorry, but I gotta rant again.

Your parents do not have your best interests in mind. They have bills to pay, jobs to work, and any number of personnal mistakes to fix. It is up to you to provide the climbing opportunities you need.

Wake up America's youth

Don't waste your youthful energy waiting for mommy and daddy to get their dead butts off the couch, they are old and tired, you are not. Don't make that same mistakes that my generation, generation X, made. Don't wait to live. Freedom and adventure is all around us, don't be afraid to grab it. Your parents were afraid and that is why they don't do anything anymore. They are paraliysed with fear and the aquiring comfort. Go, live, learn, and become free as you know you can be.

Ok, I am not at all trying to be mean, sarcastic stupid by saying this, but I live in southern Utah (St. George) and if anyone that feels like this ever comes by my way, e-mail me and I would be stoked to take you out. Probably not a good post on my part, but I just wanted to invite anyone who is interested.

Wonderbread. wow. I apologize, but I am about to be slightly off topic...

Quote:can't climb for a week and your bitchin like a little girl!? WTF, some of us can't climb for ten months cuz of a couple surgeries to put our knee back together, and you're complaining about a week???

While I sympathize with your plight, I'm utterly insulted by your remark! Why is it that so many guys feel the need to use girls and women as the ultimate insult for other guys??! Let's see...what is the lowest thing I can call another man or boy for insult value? Oh, yeah! Either a girl or a woman! Perfect. Please, please, PLEASE, take you head out of your a-- and your attitude and insults with it! There are so many other nouns you could use without resorting to such tiresome, sexist remark. How about any one of these:

Baby, whiner, wimp, malcontent, wanker, etc.

Hell, be creative for a change! You might actually contribute to the culture in a positive way! How about just sticking with "little boy", instead of peppering the rest of us with your contemptuous commentary in the bargain?

I am soooooooooooooooo tired of female references being used as the ultimate male condescension! How manly is THAT? I wonder...

I was climbing at the stronghold a couple of months ago and there were a couple of newbies (guys) throwing woman, girl and chick at each other. I could only shake my head 'cause there were at least 12 amazingly talented and hard working females in the gym that night. A little respect will make your circle of friends alot bigger, boyz.

Thank you cman. That is what I was talking about. Talk about laughing! My little wonderbread! Your response caused me to actually chuckle. No, really. It was so cute and...underdeveloped. You know, like the proportions that babies and young animals have so that you protect them instead of stomping them to death in aggravation. Lucky you!

Wonderbread! I see that you have gone back into your profile and removed the little bit about being 16 years old. I wonder, wonderbread, why you would do such a thing. That explains your rapier-like wit. I think those attempts at insults were in fashion for boys of your age back...um...in the mid-seventies. Oh, that's right! You weren't around then, so you couldn't have known. Poor thing.

When you are old enough to understand the difference between taking oneself too seriously and merely being insulted by inane, monosyllabic and, quite frankly, juvenile catch phrases, then, come back and we'll have some substantive discussions on just where you and I stand in this culture, relatively speaking. Say, aren't you part of this XY-Generation or some media-created vision of present youth that is more sophisticated and savvy than those of us who came before at the same age? If so, Wonderbread, then all I can say is: You're draggin' the average down.

Well Louisiana is quite hilly compared to Florida. I know cuz my Dad lives there. It ain't no Colorado but there's bouldering if you know where to look. The best bet is work hard, get a car, save some bucks and drive. AR and Tx are near by. Good climbing there. Save more and Colorado isn't that far. I have to save all year for 15 days on rock, but I find it well worth it.

JDpeak: being a father, I can certainly attest to what Crap said. His name is obviously not a correct one: I recommend we all call him "truth" from now on.

Please re-read "truths" post, and remember that the truth shall set you free.

Also: remember that buildering can talk place in almost any city. I've done some great chimneys and cracks here in Portland, Or. (shhhhhhh). Uhhh, be careful on that one for all the obvious reasons.

PS Doosh: isn't that correctly spelled Douche? As in Douche Bag, and after checking out the link to your "handle" I have 2 questions: why is your real name A Hole, and are you just teasing us all the time?

Regards to all:

BillCoe (my psydonom, inventive eh?)

JDPEAK, I live in Kansas ( it don't get any flatter)I didn't start climbing until I was 27 YOA (30 YOA now). You have many years ahead of you. Look at the bright side think of all the cool places you will get to see and travel to while using LA as a base camp. I didn't even start exploring our great country until I had a reason. Rock climbing and backpacking showed me a whole new world. Good luck.
