Partner that WON'T climb outside!!!

I have a partner that loves climbing but only indoors. I try to get him to go out but he says that it's too unsafe. I'm a little confused on his theory. We've gone sport rapelling a bunch of times but he refuses to climb. He also spelunks and other more dangerous sports. Any one heard of this and how'd you deal with it?

He also thinks I'm crazy for taking up trad climbing. IMO climbing is as safe as YOU make it, so I can't figure out what's up.

Thoughts, opinions, sugestions.

Leave him on the trail and then let him pout in the parking lot.

I had a partner who just couldn't be bothered. He thought the gym was all that you needed, regardless of what I said to try to convince him.
...until he won a rope at a comp.
Then he was keen to get outside an use it, and needless to say once he got outside he got hooked Cool
(the gym provided ropes, so he didn't need it there)

I guess that just means your partner needs to win some trad gear....Wink

Yep, the preponderance of the evidence shows that 4.5 hours of "time out" in the parking lot will motivate your partner to climb; however, the best data depend on the presence of a more motivated cousin. No cousin and all bets are off.

Try maybe to bring him in a wonderful area, where the landscape will put him in a mood for climbing. ANd lead for him if he's scared.

Seriously though, you are in Oklahoma! Is it the climbing she has a problem with, or the incessant talk about climbing? Wink

It's frustrating when this happens. My climbing partners keep saying that they will take a lesson from our local gym in lead belaying. Then we can go outside where they can belay me in a sport climb and I can set up the anchors and they can top rope. But they never manage to get around to doing this. I am not qualified to teach them. I've given up and am in the process of finding others to climb with. We can't make people do things they just don't want to.

You'll save yourself time by following the above advice. Go find a partner that is more stoked about climbing outside than you are instead. Then that person can post here about what a weeny you are about not climbing outside enough Wink.

Nice catch.... The climbing here in Oklahoma is limited, especially in height. Nothing over 200 ft. But hey for anyone needing a partner, come to Oklahoma I'll take you out( Just wait till it cools off a few more degrees

I had a partner like that. He was scared shitless about leading, and preferred inside over out. I go outside with other people, and inside with him.

For god sakes, many crags are bustin' at the seams already, we hardly need to drag unwilling indoor climbers out so as to increase the crowds.

Leave him or her in the gym where they belong and find someone who already climbs outside.

that is so not true. indoor climbing is sometimes more dangerous than outdoor. although it depends on the type of climbing, i boulder. so most of my injuries consist of bad falls and muscle and tendon issues. i have never gotten hurt climbing outdoors. and you can tell him that. i have been injured do many times in the gym it isn't funny, so tell him to get a grip and climb.

CoolMost injuries happen in the gym, because gymbies think it's oh so safe. Remind him of this, take him to a comfortable outdoors place, not overrun with crowds, set up a TR on something substantially easier than he wants to do. Show and explain your anchoring system, and using a 2nd rope if need be, rap the route first and point out any problems(no tape outdoors). If all this fails, then your next best option is to get another partner. By the way, trad climbing is where it's at. There's nothing like hauling up a bunch of gear and slings and keeping a cool head, whilst making a very committing move. Feel the love. Good luck.

not everyone who climbs only indoors is a poser. in the flat lands of Louisiana we only get a coulpe of chances for trips each year. i went on 3 trip lst year outdoors. and all were a 6 hour drive. so for those of us who train indoors all day because we live in this depressing place called flat give us a break. i am not a poser. i am a competer
