I sent a subscription request to Urban Climber Magazine and it came back as undeliverable. Their phone rings once and then defaults to a busy signal. I am told the magazine isn't very good. Is the magazine worth it? The address I have is Permanent Publishing USA P.O. Box 338 N.Y. N.Y. 10014.
Is there another climbing magazine other than Climbing and Rock and Ice, other than Ascent?

Don't waste your time with Urban Climber... and forget about everything else and check out the Alpinist... you'll never go back.

how about you just subscribe through the website:
http://www.urbanclimbermag.com/

I had a subscription given as a gift 2 years ago. If you like bouldering, then this could be the perfect mag for you. I don't know if they have changed much in the last year.

If you just HAVE to go through snail mail to contact them, I would use this info rather than your current address:

Skram Media HQ
180 Varick Street
Room 1514
New York, NY 10014
Tel: (212) 691-2921
Fax: (212) 243-8212

fuck you man. obviousley you trad climb like 5.10.

Urban Climber is the best mag in the business. i too thought that once it came out it was going to try to be urban: style, fashion, buildering, and only bouldering. now that i have been reading there mag i realize that it is the most real amg out there. they (the mag) keeps you updated on all the new things and sends and redpoints in todays sport but also makes half of there mag about climbers climbing just as hard as these "pros" but dont get recognition. so far the only people who dont like urban climber are the low grade trad dads who dont appreciate the athleticsm of our sport.

bring on the shit Cool

Love that ad on the back of that pic of Larry on the back cover with the Mad rock pad strapped to his back, peddling a tiny bike down the hwy somewhere near Moab: cig dangling, cowboy hat on.

Alpinist is THE very best mag for alpine climbing.

I especially liked the stuff on buildering. They should do more of that. I followed my friend Andrew up a 6 story chimney of a building he led where every story he tied off the stairway handrail with a runner for pro.

Pretty sweet.

my guess is you made the spelling quip and then realized you made an error yourself.

or it took you 10 minutes to think of the insult, after which you came back and put it in.

Yes, but the question is, what are you interested in?
The best quality mag out there, in my opinion, is Alpinist. They have the best pictures and the most well written articles.
But maybe you just like bouldering (which is cool, too). In that case you might as well go with urban climber. Climbing and Rock and Ice have more of a mixture of trad, sport, bouldering, etc.
You can also try to get Gripped, the Canadian climbing magazine. It's pretty good, too.

goodness me, looks like I stuck a cord. Sorry if I don't like reading a magazine about sweet Ivan Greenes arm bands are and what hair styleJason Kehl is sporting that month, splashed intermitantly with Kahdeja ads. You're intitled to your own opinion, but don't cry if people don't agree with you.

oh, and I wouldn't go making assumptions about other peoples abilities based on thier magazine preference, then again, you sound like the kind of kid who probably spends more time spraying than you do actually climbing...

I am not a big fan of the mag. but I have heard the subscription service is sub-standard from others as well.
It's too bad.

OBE- Rhythm not only climbs well, his style is pretty darn good too.Wink

To each his own with reading material

Highlights from their latest issue:

A two page article on a 5 year old that can climb in a gym in NYC

Another page devoted to “Ear Candy” (…in a climbing magazine)

Way too many photos of that douche bag Ivan Green

An article that highlights a heavily chipped area 30 mins away from the Gunks

…not to mention the impossible to decipher font they tend to use all over the place

...yeah, I'm going to pass on this subscription...

I have not seen that issue Elwood. Sounds like a horror show. But think of this: if they can put all that shit in UC, then boulders will have a mag which will be publishing that kind of thing, and the rest of us can read interesting climbing stories in R & I and Climbing instead of that trash.

yeah I just subscribed to alpinist. I was so impressed with their website, layout look & feel and quality of pictures/articles. And I don't even know anything or have much interest for ice climbing but they do cover a little bit about other aspects of climbing.

For all around good climbing coverage I think Rock and Ice is the best. It doesn't have all the crap that UC has I like the articles and layout much better than Climbing. Alpinist is really good because it has lots of reading and great quality photos on great paper.

I hate magazines that you can flip through in ten minutes and have nothing to really read.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the dismal quality of the writing it UC. Did none of their writers ever take a high school english class?
But hey, most boulderers can't read anyways, right? Wink

I'm an Alpinist fan myself, I hate the exploitation of climbing "image" and how "totally stoked" everybody gets. But to each his own I suppose...

^ I got nothing against being totally stoked... but obviously different people get stoked on different things! Personally I'd rather read about what I prefer climbing- long trad horror shows!
However UC is not a bad mag IMO, its just very targeted at a certain type of climber.
