So, I went to the climbing gym the other day and had a strange interaction. My climbing partner introduced me to a guy that he used to climb with. I was polite, said hello, and shook his hand. The "brah" was gruff and short with me. So, I was talking to someone about looking forward to doing some easy multi-pitch stuff and "brah" says to my friend, "Real motivating man. Nice partner you got there." I guess he was referring to the fact that I was not going to hang off of sport route for two days trying to work a move. Maybe multi-pitch routes are lame to him. So I replied by looking at him and just asking him if he really said that. Of course it was met with a gruff walk away. The best happens next. I have small children and it was getting late. My phone rings, as we were casually trying a couple of boulder problems, and I answer it. "Brah" says in as dicky a manner as possible: "I would never climb with that dude if he is going to answer his phone." And he walks away. Of course I asked him if he is a penis like this all of the time but he just carries his crash pad out of the gym. I repeat, carries his crash pad out of the gym. I ask my friend about the guy and basically "brah" is "hardcore" and tries to push "buttons." It is hard enough to get motivated to climb indoors but this isn't any help. I am fairly certain "brah" is on this forum so maybe he can read this and reply. It was pretty funny though but a little irritating. Anyways, I felt like posting this here as I was wondering if anyone else encounters guys like this?

Don't you know how fun it is to dog a sport route for days. It is like aid climbing but even slower.

I know that I am quite short and brash with others, but this guy just sounds like an ass. But then again, some have taken my lack of diplomacy the wrong way and thought I was an ass to.

Nice. Instead of the crash pad offering extra safety, people were tripping all over it. I guess it had been folded for too long and was unable to lay flat.

This was definitely him being an ass. Even our mutual friend was taken aback. He just seemed to be very bitter and unhappy.

Yep, you caught me. I had my cell phone on me at 9pm in a climbing gym. I should have forgotten about my kids being a handful at bedtime. We were pretty worn out and about to leave. I actually was waiting for the infamous "wife call."

I climb fairly regularly outside and at my local gym and I've been lucky enough to not really run into anyone like 'brah' in my gym. Even outside pretty much all the climbers I've met have been pretty cool. (in general I think that's the case for most climbers) Maybe I've just been lucky though. Hopefully you won't run into him too much in the future.

Imagine if you committed to a weeks trip someplace and had to endure this kind of stupidity and craziness. I've never run into it although when I was young, one of the best climbers in the state seemed to have me on ignore...like I'd wander over to a group and give and get hi's and hellos from all but him. Later I learned that he was just a real introverted person. It had nothing to do with me...dude just had a long warm up period. Now you have to name names!!! Edited for speling......

If he was so "core" then what the heck was he doing in a gym?! That's like copping an attitude for being the best extreme skier in Michigan! In my experience, true pros (in any sport) are mostly humble and cool. It's always the wanna-bes and poseurs that are all full of themselves. Laugh and walk away!!!

Yeah, you wouldn't want to spoil somebody's gym-wilderness experience with the trappings of the rat race. Jay, I know you're joking, but with unnatural distractions like cellphones and running children in the gym, it really is hard to properly chillax and vibe into the blaring honk of Master of Puppets while simultaneously contemplating the crux moves on getting that chick's digits.

I do have a friend who committed to a trip to Peru with someone and barely knew him. They never spoke after their bad trip. I certainly value my time as my kids are 3 and less than a year. I only really climb with guys I've known for some time. I am pretty sure "brah" doesn't want any part of scouting boulders, cleaning them, and climbing problems with no name or grade.

"Master of Puppets" - a GREAT name for a gym route. Don't get me wrong; I regularly puppet ... err ... climb at the gym.

Clarify please. Was he a pro who was a douchbag or just a pro douchbag? These things are important.
