Ok August is here summer is over, everyone back to the gym

Just kidding, we got 2 - 3 months of outdoor climbing left. Anyway as usual post your plans here, some of us are going to the north shore Aug. 21-24, we'll be camping at Northern Exposure campground anyone who wants to join us is welcome to. if you want to get a campsite in the same area, tell them you want a site near Les Voorhies and I think they will accommodate you.

:D Les :D

I will be back in Minnesota from the 9th through (probably) the 15th of August. I would love to hit up Taylor's Falls, for old times sake. The most likely day would be Sunday the 10th, but I may be able to get up there additional days too.

Bouldering, top-roping, (nobody leads that stuff, do they) ????? Hahaha. Let me know if you are interested in meeting up.

Ah... Friggin' AUGUST is here already... Man, where did the summer go? Anyway, lots of climbing still to do before the holiday season.

Damn straight I'm interested in hooking up and climbing with ya curt! Let me look at the 10th. If that's the day you're going to climb, I'll make it work somehow... Any other days you might want to climb too?

New to climbing, brand new to this site and just moved to Minnesota (Minneapolis, soon to be White Bear Lake) from Oregon, and am looking for for some friendly locals to climb with.

I am pretty much open for whenever, and or where ever.

Hello all,

I figured that it was about time I posted here-- I'm moving to Minneapolis the first week of September after 6 years in Boston... and trying not to lament the loss of (or the severely increased road-trip time to) some of the finest bouldering and climbing in the country.

Can somebody give me a heads up on the general 'feel' of places y'all climb? (I know I could just log onto the "routes" page, but I'm interested in your opinions.) Sounds like Taylor's Falls has lots of leading, top-roping, and bouldering... and Barn's Bluff has some sport climbing? And the North Shore and Devil's Lake (WI) have lead climbing?

How difficult is the climbing? Can I find numbers of 5.10 and 5.11 climbs? Is there potential for development, or is have these areas been scoured out for routes? Thanks for any thoughts, it's much appreciated!

Jon

PS-- I'll also likely be in Minneapolis in the first week of September, and would love to meet up with people who are climbing. I've got a decent rack and rope, and a respectful year and a half of climbing experience. Look forward to meeting you all. jw

I'll be at the North Shore sometime around the 5th-7th. Will be climbing with family and friends at the Amphitheater. I know you guys don't allow chalk, but is it OK if I wear shoes and use a nylon rope?

Dann,

I can commit to Sunday the 10th for sure. The other days I'll have to see about. My mother is going into the hospital on the 11th for some surgery (one of the reasons for my trip) so I'll have to take it day-by-day for the rest of the week.

Alright curt, sounds good. I don't know when you last climbed at TF but, you do know the current "conditions" there don't you?

Anyway, post or PM me and we'll figure out what time works sometime this week.

Well, if you must... Just kidding. That "No Chalk" deal is just for the areas on the North Shore... Some first ascentionist years ago was joking around and said to do his most recent route, you can't use chalk. Well, people start talking; years go by and word of mouth turns into a "NO Chalk Ethic" at half the states crags... What cha gonna do?

Believe me, the majority of the climbers here USE chalk...

fargoan, Welcome to Minnesota!

You should find plenty of routes in the .10 - .11 range and quite a few higher on the scale... As far as"developement" goes, there might be a few areas left to dig up, but I wouldn't count on it. Most of those would probably be on the eastern border along the Mississippi river bluffs south of the Twin Cities. I can almost guarantee that just about every inch of rock has been covered in all areas along the North Shore as well as at Blue Mounds SP.

Want to get a good quick workout, Barn Bluff in Red Wing is the "sport" area about an hour south of the cities. Want to do some trad leads, boulder, and top-rope, Taylors Falls is about an hour north of the cities but be forewarned; the place is constantly packed with climbers and tourists. You may have to wait in line to do popular routes here. The WI side is generally less busy.

There are a number of us that regularly meet or trade partners and whatnot (wow, that almost sounds kinky  ) to climb at BB and TF. This thread (and our other "monthly" threads) are where we make plans and find partners to go out to the crag with. Feel free to join in the fun anytime you can.

nanista-can, Welcome to Minnesota and RC.com! The same goes to you... This is where we make our plans and hook up for partners. Feel free to join us anytime.

This thread and all other monthly threads can be found at the bottom of the Minnesota page in the posts related to MN section.

Alright, current happenings... For anyone interested in joining us, myself, rockfool and some folks from VE, and rockhugger will all be at Barn Bluff in Red Wing by around 10 tomorrow (Saturday) morning.

Just wait til you climb on the N. Shore, ya don't need chalk. Some Taylors falls routes are pure greased chalk fests. I'm convinced that hords of climbers using chalk takes away most of the grip that the holds once had.

Dose anyone going up to the North Shore for the 21st -24th have any room for one more in their car? I really want to go before I leave, and my dad is playing softball in North Dakota. I can help out with gas or lunch ect... Let me know if you have room.

Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd drop a post to introduce myself to all. This is my first post to RC.com. Thank you, thank you all. I've lost my climbing partners and thought this would be a good place to meet up with people (aside from the crags).

Anyway....I've been climbing since last fall and the two that I was climbing with moved away. I just got back from a long weekend at Blue Mounds that should hold me over for another week or so. (Gotta recover) But I need to get back on the rock soon!

Well, rockfool, Tim (he's got a sn here but I can't remember what it is, Tim, post up more so we learn your handle!), rockhugger and myself and Kali and Alyssa (my 2 girls) went down and did a little climbing at Barn Bluff yesterday (Saturday). We had a good time, but it turned out to be a WASH!!! Literally... (as Jeff aluded to a couple of posts earlier)

I led Jam & Jelly and then Tim was set to try his hand at it. He didn't get very far so he wanted someone else to "show him how its done" and it started sprinkling, heavily. Before long, Heather/rockfool was climbing in a pretty steady rain. She was going to clean the draws at the top, but Jeff said he wanted to climb it.

By the time she got down (without the draws) we were caught in a full thunderstorm with thunder and lightning very nearly right above us. So, Heather graciously offered to climb again to get the draws ('cus Jeff would have melted in the rain). When she got down, we were all soaked (except Jeff who was hidding under an overhang), packed up our stuff and carefully treaded our way down the trail.

OH, and Jeff did end up getting wet (and didn't melt after all) on the hike down. Its amaizing that the whole trail didn't wash away with all the water that was rushing down it while we hiked down.

Anyway, had fun. Don't like climbing & getting soaked at the same time...

As far as Wednesday Craig, we'll have to see.

Welcome to the site mtnlvr! Reiterating fo_d's decree, join us any time!

Hey Craig,
I might be up for climbing on wed afternoon. I wouldn't make it till 6pm but I'm assuming that you meant after work? I just lifted for the first time this morning, I was at about half strength and a bit painful but I'm so antsy I really want to give it a try. It I can't climb, I'll at least be a belay slave and just near rock. Let me know what time you were thinking.

1 more thing. fo_d, I think I'll be joining you at the campgroud on the north shore(at least the 21st). I have a wedding to attend there so I was planning on being up north anyways. I'll just have to climb and show up at the wedding with chalk on my butt, oh yeah, you can't use chalk anyways so I should be good to go!

You guys must have had some rain, since my partners and I bootied off a couple routes when we climbed at Barn Bluff on Sunday. Things went well, though we're all a bit out of practice, so there was some flailing. Anybody know how the bouldering at Blue Mounds is looking lately?
