The majority of sport climbers call helmets "brain buckets" and laugh at them.

They can laugh and ridicule all they want. I always wear it when doing belayed climbing outside. Rocks aren't the only things that can fall on you. They don't call 'em "beaners" (more homonymns) for nothing. If your partner ever beans you with a dropped QD, my guess is that you might also jump on the "I'm wearing the b.b. and to &*%# with what anyone else thinks" bandwagon.

unless that is, you are sport climbing (as the thread implies by it's location in the forums) and you actually want to climb at your limit.

When I belay I don't stand directly below my partner, so if a hold breaks, or he drops a draw (the latter happening like once every 5 years, or something), I don't get hit in the head. Now, am I missing something? Is the correct technique to stand direcly beneath another climber, but to wear a helmet? I'm talking single-pitch sport climbing.

Neither do I, at least on sport routes, but stranger things are known to happen.

Also, I personally don't feel like it interferes with my climbing at my limit, but then I'm not a 5.12 climber either. Maybe that is more of an issue for elite sport climbers, which I will never be.

Anyway, most of my climbing is alpine trad, so I am so used to having it on that I hardly notice it.

No I don’t either. But I try to stay close enough to the wall where if my partner takes a whipper I don’t get launched face first in to the wall, if he out weighs me by a substantial amount.

I would wear that, and on my back I would have a sword. Everytime I would get to a crux I would use the blade to make a better hold. J/K

I got a little lazy about my helmet this year, but after the events of last weekend, I'm going to be a little more militant about having my helmet...

yes, I wear a helmet. I think it's rather important. The way I see it, if you're not smart enough to wear a helmet, you don't have much to protect any way, right?

hosh.

If the area I am climbing in has a major problem with loose rock... then yes. I don’t wish to live life from a tube and hospital bed.

but the "good" news is that in todays society you won't have to worry about that. :)

and yes I do wear one most of the time outside especially if I'm in a very touristy are.

i always wear a helmet leading, except for the time i was climbing in st. George and took a 15 ft whipper into the rock and smashed my head open, 7 hours later i ended up getting 5 staples in my head. got some cool pictures though.

helmet $55
5 staples $260

It depends where i am climbing. Anything that might have a rock fall off. helmet always. Indoor, nope. My belayer, yup he best be wearing a helmet also because if a rock drops on him, he can't belay me and then my helmet does me no good.
