One of my personal favorites: "Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn." -John Muir Also good for those with large "wimp nodes" (a Malcom saying): "First weigh the considerations, then take the risks." -Helmuth von Moltke And for those who need more common sense: "Take calculated risks. That is quite different from being rash." -George Patton

"I'd reather be in the mountains thinking about God, then be in church thinking about the mountains." I read it on this site, forgot who said it though.

"Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try." Yoda. Ignore that it's a quote from a fictional character, it says a lot about committing to a move when you climb.

"Summit or death, either way I win." - Rob Slater before dying on K2 "I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have done that if we weren't taping" - Myself just after a 10 ft gainer flip off of a sand dune. "Oh man, I'm so scared...I love this s---" - My friend just before the same gainer flip. "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately. To front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived." - Henry David Thoreau.

not a climbing quote but a good one. "The dominant primordial beast was strong in Buck, and under the fierce conditions of trail life it grew and grew. Yet it was a secret growth. His new born cunning gave him poise and control." -Jack London, The call of the wild.

Mallory though: "Because it's there" (explaining why he wanted to climb Everest.)

The first one is one of my favorites. If you cannot understand that there is something in a man which responds to the challenge of this mountian and goes out to meet it, that the struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you wont see why we go. What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. If you have to ask the question, you won't understand the answer. -George Leigh Mallory I climbed up this north face to experience the masochistic pleasure of fighting for my life. But I had'nt intended to lose. The need for risk has always been inside of me, lurking and threating. If I don't satisfy the impulses, if I let them bulid up untreated, they'll explode with finality. I'd kill myself trying to handle it.--Mark Twight

In reply to: If you have to ask the question, you won't understand the answer. -George Leigh Mallory I've often used this answer, but never was quite sure where it came from. I thought it was orriginally Sonny Barger when asked why he rode Harleys - guess I was wrong. Not climbing specific, but one of my favorites "I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time." - Jack London
