I am fortunate enough to work for a climbing/rescue rope manufacturer and I love my job! Great people, free rope, and I get to attend tradeshows, OR, and climbing events. :D

I work at the local climbing gym part-time. I also work for the local outdoor rock climbing instructional company. So yes...I spend a lot of time teaching people how to tie the 8 knot. And yes...I am the bastard hogging all your warm up routes when you get to the crag on Saturday afternoons. None of it is full-time, and it leaves lots of days to climb, if only my partners would stop moving to other cities.

I'm a grants administrator...which means I help people to get funding for their research. Pay is enough for me to buy gear and airline tickets comfortably, and vacation days are very generous!

I see a few teachers on this topic, the three best things about teaching, June, July and August. Not many great things after that.

i write database applications for the forest service. when you word it that way, it sounds nice. you can also say i sit in a little box and swear at a screen and twitch all day. sounds less inviting when you think of it that way. its about 10 celcius in my cube today, as the HVAC in here just plain sucks. currently, i'm in the middle of transitioning to full time writer/musician/freelance IT security/climbing ho...i suspect this will be a postive career move :D

Someone wrote: "I see a few teachers on this topic, the three best things about teaching, June, July and August. Not many great things after that." Actually, there are lots of great things about teaching, but just to focus on the schedule: June, July, August, 4-5 weeks in December/January, another 9 days for spring break, and a slew of 3-4 day weekends (I'm a university prof, so I can set up a MW or T/Th schedule if I choose to). On top of that: when I am at "work" I am reading or writing about things I am interested in, or sitting with students in a coffee shop discussing the same; I don't wear a suit; I often have mornings or afternoons free for a climb or surf session; people expect me to be counter-cultural and therefore don't complain that I am; every 6 years I get a full year off with pay (sabbatical); etc. I'm not saying it is the best gig for everyone, but it is pretty sweet for me. The downsides of teaching at the university level: (1) It is not easily portable. You cannot just pick a city and get a university job there like you could with accounting (I imagine) or nursing. Thus, I am currently in LA (Hell-A). LA is actually a decent place to be as a climber--not great (Boulder or SLC), but not awful (Midwest). (2) Grading. Brian

Partner at a consulting firm...I get lots of frequent flier miles, but, not a ton of time off. Weekend warrior mostly, other than a few longer climbing trips during the year.

I'm a cop, which sort of squashes any chance of what I consider a good "rock 'n roll lifestyle." It pays the bills, the benefits and job security are good, and I have lots of extra stress to burn off at the rocks. I work 4 on 4 off, which allows me to climb at least two days a week. Being the fuzz makes it a little tough to find partners but I manage.
