In reply to: No one likes your dog except for you. Get it ino your pea sized brains that although your hairball may be more important to YOU than the people in your life, to the rest of us IT is just a hairball  anytime you bring your hairball anywhere other than your own backyard you are inposeing on other people. heck Most of the time you are imposeing on other people when you keep the mutt in you own back yard. Dog next to my moms house didn't shut up for five freaking years!!!!! Awwww. How cute. Someone has a poopy diaper!!! Cool pics everyone!! Cool thread. The kangaroo is hilarious!!

In reply to: Dog next to my moms house didn't shut up for five freaking years!!!!! Oh, is that why you finally had to move out of her basement? Sorry, couldn't resist! PS - I don't have a dog so I'm gonna have to bring my cockatiel, Apache, to the crag. He's gonna sing pop goes the weasel all day long, step on your rope and steal your peanut butter sandwich. So you had all better look out!

In reply to: So I did a quick and dirty search for a crag dog pics thread. Didnt find one. So if you got a pic of your crag dog, post away. Tell us about your four-legged friend!! My dog is anything but a crag dog. I take him as little as possible. It's just not safe (for the dog) at high use areas and he's miserable. There have been several times when he's almost been hit by rock fall by careless climbers. My dog despises the rock crag. he's ok with ice climbing. his favorite part is the fact that I have no skills and despite my best attempts i tend to clear lots of ice (i tend to exagerate a bit). anyway, he collects the ice and eats it. i'm glad he's a border collie and smart enough to not try that with rocks. in anycase, he's climbed 5.3 slabs, summited 3rd and 4th class peaks and rappelled off the tops of cliffs with me. I trust him more then most humans and i enjoy hiking, biking, paddleing and climbing with him more too. The reason is he shows more introspect and appreciation for the places he goes then most people and he doesn't complain. He is also the ultimate leave no trace hiker. No powerbar wrappers, gum, cigarette butts or wasted food. I can vouch for the fact that he's never broken a glass bottle or written his initials on a tree or rock. Just the occasional pile of poop that he is courteous enough to walk off the trail for. Heck some humans shit right on the trail so I think that is amazing. BTW, I don't believe all dogs are good trail or crag dogs but I am always weary of people who have a mistrust of all animals. http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=58315

If your dog almost gets hit by a rock, it's not the climber's problem (the dog doesn't know what ROCK! means anyway), it's yours. There is a safe place for your dog to be, and that is a good 30 feet away from the wall and tied to a tree where he can get shade and not rocks on the head. Oh and I love dogs. But not so much at the crag. Especially that small one I posted earlier, he's a douche. But I think dogs deserve and need better than standing by a wall looking at it's owner climb. You dog owners should intead go on a hike with the dog, he'll like it A LOT more. No kidding.

You dog owners should intead go on a hike with the dog, he'll like it A LOT more. No kidding. Actually I give you a 50% agreement on the rockfall thing. See the rock might hit my dog or it might not, but it could just as well hit me or another climber. I've seen rock fall bounce off boulders and fly many feet (as in 30 or more) from the fall line. Rockfall for the most part is a inexperienced gym rats gift to the rest of us at the crag. Now if your putting up a unclimbed route, or something that sees 3 ascents a year, I would expect some rock fall. But when you climb at the Gunks on routes that might see 20 ascents a day dropping rocks is a careless pathetic act. Even worse when you don't call rock, or when the freakin boulder hits and you go "oopps" and then laugh. And I agree 50% on the fact that your dog shouldn't be at the crag at all. Dogs are miserable at home (even in a yard where they do absolutely nothing) they need human or dog interaction and at the very least at the crag they get that. they also get some excercise walking and scrambleing around the base of the crag. now some breeds do ok by themselves in a yard. but any breed with a ounce of intelligence needs stimulation. i'm sure most people have seen border collies who incessantly chase there tails? thats because that dog is smart enough to manage a flock of sheep on it's own with only minimal direction from hand signals 1/4 mile away if at all. leaving it in a yard is like giving einstein a freakin coloring book and thinking he'd be satisfied with life. bottom line is most people know absolutely nothing about dogs. they grew up with a dog tied to a tree in the yard (miserable at that) and think that is the way dogs like it. Gotta say, unless you dog is a lazy worthless piece of crap he's probably miserable living that sort of life. So get him out for a hike or a run or a mountain bike ride before or after your day at the crag. Then leave him at home or take him to the crag but stay away from the careless climbers who think rockfall is funny. But please don't take your dog if your doing multipitch. It's inconsiderate and unsafe for the dog to be at the base of the cliff for perhaps hours. take 'em and top rope or stick to single pitch routes and you'll all have a better time. So while I think it is best to not take you dog to a crowded crag (gunks for instance) i don't fault people who do.

[quote="pico23] Actually I give you a 50% agreement I can live with a 50% agreement, because the other 50% I do not disagree with. Except that rockfalls are not always caused by humans. Animals (including dogs!) can create such if access is possible to the top. I've seen BigHorn Sheep kicking rocks at us in Alberta and chipmunks creating minor rockfalls (but enough to be hurt) in the east. I've seen 1 foot diameter rocks getting pulled off year long crowded cliffs by ropes because of a fall. We can't predict those, but can prevent by wearing a brain bucket and those do not exist for dogs, plus they are a bigger target as their body is more "spread out horizontally" than humans. Think about it before bringing your poochy!

Think about it before bringing your poochy! If I start worrying about chip munks and mountain goats then I'd be so agoraphobic that I wouldn't be able to leave my house. Yeah, sometimes rockfall isn't caused by a careless climber but I'd venture to say the majority of the time it is. And yes, dogs can knock rocks off as well. The difference is they don't think it's funny or do it out of carelessness. And one other note. A helmet is meant to protect against small rocks. Pebbles to golf ball size stuff. When you get into baseball and bigger I don't care if I'm wearing a helmet or not, I don't want to get hit. Think of it like a motorcycle helmet at 160Kmh it's not gonna do a thing. But at 40kmh it just might be the difference between slurping your food through a straw for the rest of your life or getting up and walking away.

I played with a couple of them, petted all of them. They had fun, I had fun. Thanks to whoever brought their dogs to Moore's (NC) this weekend, I enjoyed them.
