Everyone should get this shirt and wear it to their local gym or wear it to your local gear shop http://www.tshirthell.com/shirts/tshirt.php?sku=a188

I will probably get cynical later in the week if I get into a bad mood, but right now I think that the Yuppification of our sport is a riot! My favorite part is that Wall Street is selling consumers products based on a lifestyle that we are percieved to live. They are not copping our style, they are copping a misconstrued interpretation of one particular climber's style. Let them think what they want, what's it got to do with my climbing? Here are the differences between Hollywood and Yosemite as I see it: Vertical Limit v. Masters of Stone North Face v. Fish Range Rover v. Toyota Corolla Gore-Tex boots v. sneakers Sharma v. me [ This Message was edited by: dirko on 2002-12-25 22:40 ]

in my highschool melodramatic world its just like the "uppermiddle class...pussy queers" wearing skater wear, and kavu hats (side note, i wore a kavu hat long before i started climbing for fly-fishing, does that mean i was a poser? and thats a true question and by no means condescending) posers are posers who cares.

thank you mcmlxxxiii, i am a beginner i just got my first harness for christmas, ive been borrowing one from the gym so i could climb, ive gone from barely making it up the wall (25 ft.) to doing a 4+/5- rating (5.10) in two months but since i didnt do it in my own gear does that make me a poser, NO! and even though thats not what most of you are saying in this forum, i have dealt with the "higher than thou" climbers who wont talk to or help me because i didnt even have my own gear and i couldnt climb routes on the wall yet. just because you climb and someone else doesnt or sucks at it doesnt mean you are higher on the food chain, treat people with respect, maybe youll make a friend and climbing partner or at least a belay slave for a while.

Not long ago, I would see someone with a North Face jacket (or a few other brands) and I would know it was someone who at least enjoyed outdoor activities. Then, stupid people discovered that they are much more expensive than nike jackets and s***, wich made them MUCH COOLER! Suddently, i have stupid rich kids showing off their mountain clothing on their way between home and school... Hey! There's nothing wrong about buying quality clothes (I use my mountain jacket in the city), but when u do it just to show of, that's punishable. I ususaly strike everyone i see with a North Face on the street. If they are real mountain people, they will strike back and i will greet them (with a few less teeth). If they are just stupid, they will be scared as hell and run away crying. Before, everyone would ask me what kind of brand was that and where had bought such a stupid jacket (or trousers or something)! Now I'm afraid of been confused with a poser! CLIMB ON! NO LOGO!

I was a paramedic just after highshool and did it for 3 years following that. We had names for a certin group off people we called WOO-WOO's a WOO-WOO is one that talked about EMS 24 7 and told stories as if they were theirs. Everyone in EMS would go through this stage....the problem where the ones that got stuck there. You may know some one like that with climbing. Just as WOO-WOOs are upset when they see some one wearing a Fire Dept shirt that is not a firefighter, we feel the same way because of our love for the sport. I don't take offense to it. and if you do maybe you should realize that it's okay your just in a WOO-WOO stage. everyone does it LOVE all of you and merry late XMAS safe climbing

im with the group who says "who cares?!" because immitation IS the best flattery. plus the extra dough to climbing companies helps them fund their R &D to make newer cooler safer stuff for those of us who use it! but (and I'm no economics guru....) if the demand for climbing-related stuff goes up, do we risk a rise in price? that would be sad.

Hmmm, all this "twalk" about clothing makes me think that I'm just gonna get as natural as the rock itself. Why spend money and time worrying about having the right clothing and gear for climbing, that is, why try and find the real brand names worn and used by real climbers and avoid the names and brands worn and toted by "non-climbers"? I'm going back to the true beginning of rock climbng paraphenalia: I am going naked from now on when I climb. Just my swami belt, hemp rope, soft pitons, and pearly white butt. (Maybe after a time or two on my fave route, Recompense, my butt will not be so white!) Care to join me? I say it is time to return to the Adam and Eve of climbing... as Joni Mitchell wrote (and CSNY and she sang): "we've got to get outselves back to the garden..." I'm in Taiwan, and I have seen some people wearing chalk bags to carry their money in. I call them manpurses. Didn't know they were fashionable though. Does this mean if I wear my chalkbag to the bar I will get more chicks?

I don't really think of Kavu as climber clothing. It is also popular with other outdoor activities: hiking, trekking, rafters. I think Kavu stuff is kinda dorky actually, and more aimed toward hikers/ adventure travellers. Prana is another example of "climbing" clothes that really isn't. I'm not sure how the company was actually started. But "prana" is a yoga term, and their clothes are also popular with yoga fanatics. I think yoga was at least partially instrumental in the founding of the company. So don't think that non-climbers are automatically "posers" just because they are wearing "climbing" clothes. I admit the "carabiner as keychain" or "coffee mug holder" trend is a bit much. I've seen a person buy a fancy DMM bent gate, and told the store worker that they were specifically using it to clip their mug to their bookbag. And I just saw an airport worker that used a nice screw-gate biner for a key chain! Why someone would want to spend $$$ on a full strength biner, when they can get a $3 toy one is beyond me (I've even gotten the toy biners for FREE with a mail order, or at outdoor gatherings). I think it is mostly coolness factor, and not because they really want people to think they are climbers. But everyone is different. Every sport has posers, and climbing is no different. When you get to the gym or the crag and start cranking, its obvious who the real climber is!!!

JCS, don't be a follower. Start a new trend, like wearing your harness outside. Don't have pockets or a bag, no problem just clip everything on the gear loops.

I used to worry about whether I was coming off as a poser, or if I had earned my place...still do. What it comes down to is that you will always be a poser to someone. My friends always gripe when their favorite "Indie" bands go big, cause they sold out, & lame crap like that. All it means is that more people found out about them. If more people are wearing climbing gear, they're becoming more aware of the climbing community. it's cool. For me it's not about how many people do what I do, it's about how much I like what I do. Or it should be.

newbie to climbing but heres my take on any entity that has the possiblity of selling out... best way to separate yourself from the masses is going hardcore. In climbing that would be 11-12s:) If its music your worried about, push up the BPMs to 160. Basketball...hit your elbow on rim. Work...get more education (Masters or PHd) This will show your down for the cause and not some come by night poser. Its how I deal with this anyway cuz I hate it when something I love is popularized and sells out (mostly music). cheers, Sean
