quote: hehe i started last year at age 15 and i already feel like i am behind the game - i can feel for the 30 year olds who just got into it :-)

Thanks Mike for the input. I am just starting climbing (basically) and I am almost 40 years old. I believe that anyone can become anything they want, no matter what age they are -- if they set their mind to it. Of course, one has to be in shape physically and mentally, but why say it is genetic? I believe that anyone who wants to be a competitive climber is more than capable if they are determined. The worst that can happen is one may not become the "best climber," but just by trying it proves that mentally they are #1! Don't give up your dream -- go for it!

Keep climbing!

JULES

Wait for the Sharma and Ogden era to die.

Probably start doing impossible routes and pushing the grade (Sharma) or start doing stupid dangerous scary routes (Ogden).

Then climb 8,000+.

Sorry to be harsh since your a Newbie but you need this.

Readjust your attitude or get out of the sport. Climbing is not an activity that will support win at all costs, gotta get paid to play, eye on the pie type attitudes.

Most likely you will either burn out or get injured from overtraining by trying too hard to reach an unrealistic goal.

Sponsors are not interested in the gotta be the best attitude either. They are intereted in climbers who are on top but still accessable and down to earth. Sponsors want climbers who will represent their company to the public and make other climbers feel very appreciated. You won't get far with out sponsors if you want to be the best.

IT'S DAMN EXPENSIVE TO TRY AND BE THE BEST. You will go through gear like water. You will go through gas and travel money like water. You will go through training supplements like water. You will need gym memberships. You will lose MANY close personal relationships, including girlfriends/boyfriends, friends from school, and you will have to leave your family to travel. You will need money to enter comps. You will need money to pay for health insurance and doctor bills because at some point you WILL become injured. You will have to give up the creature comforts of everyday life so that you can pay for some of the things I've already listed. You'll live out of a car for weeks/months/years on end just to keep up with the rest who are doing more in order to climb better.

If you think you can handle all of this go ahead and try. I wish you the best and please send pics of your development. I promise you that I have not even listed 1/4 of all that it takes. I don't know the rest to list because I'm nowhere even near being a "top" climber.

Practice and do not try to be de best compared to others, try to be the best for yourself.

And you can try training again and again, and when you are tired of training... train again.
