I'll be gone to Texas then, but sounds fun! FYI, I am an avid Smith Rock freik, and I climb there year round, but I thought that you all should know that in August the temps are in the 90s, its super dry, and the holds are pretty greasy. Don't get me wrong, I have climbed hard .11's and low .12's during this time of year, but it is really demanding. I guess the point is, know what you are getting into, and if your okay with that, have fun!

Damnit Jim! August huh? I wanna cry, with all the other trips I've got planned I don't think I can fit this one in.

I just wanted to remind all those interested in the Smith Rocks Gig or the dates.

Week of Aug. 18-23

Just bringing it back to the top. As we get closer, we can discuss more here. Looks like we should hae a good crowd and the locals should be minimal...jsut be prepared for lots of HEAT

There is also camping, for free, at the Grasslands which is about two miles east of the park, and is more suitable for large groups, car camping, and general rowdieness!

We then would carpool to the park, alieviating some of the already sick parking problems.

On a side note; There have been, for about a year or so, break-ins to newer Subarus (well not breaking, they have a master key), hopefully this will be solved by the time we go. With a key they've been able to get into cars in broad daylight.

When it is hot, there are many ways to hide from the sun. The upper gorge is nice (woman in the meadow is overrated) the rock is much more friendly than the volcanic tuff that the main complex is made of, and it is a crack climbers paradise. With most of the routes being fairly short it makes a wonderful toprope area. The "backside" is especialy nice in the morning, and the Pheonix area is good in the afternoon.

I hope this helps, if anybody needs more beta just let me know!

Jeff

Sounds like a good time, I'd like to meet some people from the site. I could also try to recruit some of the OSU bums to go climb.

Hey PhreakDigital, it looks like we'll be sharing that birthday. Heat, climbing, and a party is more than anyone could ever ask for on their B-day anyway.

Ok, I think I might be able to make
this one.
But, smith in august?
"whew" I'm melting just thinking about it.
Sounds way kicka$$ though!
I'll just make sure that most of the
weight in my pack will be water!
Because its gonna be hot!
I'll try not to miss this one,
sounds like a blast!

After my experience with the gathering here in SLC, I have to say that I am way interested. I'm gonna put in for that week off of work and barring any unforeseen circumstances I will be there.

yip!

Can I handle this one? so soon? I might try to sneak in, but don't write my reservations in Pen.... please use pencil..

I would really like to do this, but i am not exactly caught up at work, and I already am taking a week in July (no not Yosemite )

Anyway, the blue toes are gone..... and now I have the climbers blues.... You guys were fun, and I can just imagine how fun Oregon could be.

Here's the plan, I will play it by ear. If things work out.... I might bring a passenger up from SLC (spouse or climber - her choice of course)....

If not this one... definitely the next one!!

I've decided to come ut and just ask this rather difficult question to bring up.
Please try to understand my reasoning behind the question.
My husband and I are toying with the idea of making this gig. However... as usual whenever there is a large group and possible partying...I must always be very careful. I learned at a very very young age that I have a severe alergy to the second hand smoke of pot(convulsive seisures... been triggered by just walking through a cloud). I know that there are some that do partake and I want to know if this would be happening at the campground where most of the folks would be staying. If so..then Marmot and i could make arrangements to stay elsewhere...but we would like to have an idea before i put myself into a very risky situation. Please be honest.
Thankyou,
Otter

Otter:

thank you for your candor.

I was in Utah...thinking that certain things might be outta hand...too. Drinking or too hard of partying.

Ok...not a soul that I know of...was partaking in any form of Pot smoking. Even drinkin was to a minimum...under control, that is.

I think your asking is GREAT! Stating your needs.
I don't see this as an issue.
But, for you own safety...maybe staying at a small hotel/motel...would give you an out...for safety sake.

I hope this helps.
Utah: 65+ people...
not a single issue.

keep in touch...k?
