Central Washington University has a wall, dont know how good it is, but you have to be a P.E. major to take a climbin class. We also have within an hour's drive, Frenchman Coulee (sp?)-you can talk to russman about the routes there, climbin in leavenworth, and exit 38 near north bend.

University of Utah is about 15 mins from parleys canyon, and 25 mins from little cottonwood. We have no need for and on campus rock wall. the local rocks are close enough.

(added on edit)

The front rock gymn is 10 mins and a trax ride away. and rockreation is 20 mins away. A little something for everyone (even gym rats)

Oregon State has a nice place to go and it is free for students. I disagree with the last post. University of Utah has alot of local crags, but they are covered in snow in the winter. So it could use an indoor center for the winter. I heard they are supposed to put one in with the new rec center, but who knows when the rec center is supposed to be built.

We have a nice but small gym here at Colony Middle school, but it hardly ever gets used. They don't open it up even during school until late in the year, and it's not open to the public even though it's the only gym in town. I set the bouldering record on it in sixth grade, but lost it about 5 minutes later to my friend.

University of Northern Iowa has a really nice wall. It has 10 top rope setups, bouldering wall and natural rock texture. Also as natural features- Hueces and a couple of cracks. Only about an hour away there are two of the best places to climb in Iowa. (For Iowa they are good)

Since the midwest has jacksh*t for climbing, we have an indoor gym at our small D3 school, Luther College here in Decorah, IA. however, it's built by Nicros, so it's not that great. UNI has a really nice one too, and ISU has one, however, theirs is worse than ours!

I've climbed at the UNI (University of Northern Iowa) gym, and it's a nice place, but lots of stupid rules. Required helmets for bouldering and climbing, must attend a special class to belay, lead, etc.

At the University of Minnesota they have a gym on the St. Paul campus in the St. Paul Gym. Not very tall or anything, but it's ok.

I see that you are from Cleveland...if you are looking for something nearby, the University of Pittsburgh has decent climbing nearby. Doesn't even come close to anything out west, but we've got a handful of small local crags within an hour or two and Seneca is only 3 hours away. Also have a solid Outdoors Club, so you won't be lacking partners.
As for an indoor wall, nothing yet....we are working on getting a nice shiny Nicros wall put in but it will be a year or two at least before construction starts. There is a commercial wall nearby, accessible by bus (or grab a ride from a club member).

Take care!

Stanford has a pretty nice gym. The routes are really short (25 feet or so) but it doesn't matter because everybody boulders anyway. Lots of good traverses and some hard bouldering routes.

Plus, the location is hard to beat. You've got great bouldering at Castle Rock (.5 hour away) and Yosemite and Tahoe are both doable for day trips if you like driving (3.5 hours)

I've got to concur with an earlier poster (Travis). The University of Tennessee, Knoxville has an awesome wall. Mainly bouldering. . .I used to climb there back in '96 or so. So its been around for a while and not dealing with the typical issuea new facilities encounter. I dunno what its like now, but at the time there was a great variey of climbers---from total beginners to suspiciously non-university-student-lookin' SICK climbers (explained by the fact that this was Knoxville's first wall, to my knowledge).

University of Wyoming has a wall on campus and a larger one in town. The campus wall is 30 ft high, with "up routes" on toprope and bouldering. Bouldering however is the more popular. Vedauwoo is 20 miles away with hundreds of rock climbs and some great bouldering.

For as wonderful a climbing city Tucson is, I am amazed that the U of Arizona doesn't have a climbing wall for it's students. I am sitting right now in the computer lab at the La Paz dorm which is probably the closest to a climbing wall you'll find on campus (it was actually featured in an article in Climbing on buildering college campuses). We have a great Rec Center half a block from here, but sadly no wall (yet).
The local gym (Rocks and Ropes) is only 5/10 min away by bike. There is outdoor climbing all around. There are more routes than you could wish for on Mt. Lemmon which is only about half an hour away. There's Cochise Stronghold (great trad), Baboquivari, the Dry, Milagrosa Canyon, and more all within about an hour and a half. Plus, there's more all over Arizona, J Tree is only 4 hours away and Hueco Tanks isn't far either. Even Red Rocks, Zion, Colorado etc. aren't too far away.

Aw, cracgchica beat me to it! curses! but yeah., The University of Arizona is a great place to be a young climber/slacker. In addition to our proximity to scads of varied outdoor climbing and the local gym, we also have the "cow wall" that wraps around the older (north) end of campus. (the legend is, back in the days when Tucson was a dusty cow town, school administrators kept wayward livestock off campus by putting a low perimeter of rock fence around the property) It's this low (about waist-high) wall of volcanic tuff with lots of features that would make a rad traverse! Every time I walk by it I look at the big jugs and horns sticking out. They beckon me!

Someone mentioned St. Lawrence University earlier in this thread. They just opened a new climing wall there this year featuring 9-10 toprope setups and a bouldering cave. The wall has just about everything from less then vertical to a 3 or 4 foot overhang. The wall is textured and routes are changed/added just about every week by several people with different styles of climbing. You'll find everything from reachy jug feasts to routes with nothing but small awkward crimps. A good portions of the wall (3 or 4 areas) are bolted for sport climbing. The wall is only about 35 or 40' tall, but is still very nice especially when you consider that the school only has about 2000 students.

Like the previous poster mentioned, there is plenty of outdoor climbing nearby and you can always find someone to go out with. The outdoor program has run trips to the Gunks, Rumney, and Red Rocks in the past and also hosted a small climbing competion this year.

If anyone wants more information about St. Lawrence send me a PM

If you're as small as 'climbsomething' you might have fun with U of A's cow wall. As for me I'd rather use it to run hurdles.
On another note, I have been thinking about checking out the wall at the university-owned 'challenge course' just a few blocks away from campus. I discovered it my first semester here, but as far as I got was scrambling over the chainlink fence, bouldering around on the first few feet of it and realizing I should come back when I could find somebody equally as derelict as I am to join me in my not-so-legal attempts to take advantage of university property. If you're interested, let me know... I'd be up for another fun fence-jumping.

University of Missouri, Columbia:

we've got a nice bouldering wall in the rec center, but it's either take a class from them and $12 a semester, or join the university climbing club for $20 a year, and get the 10% discount at the local gear shops, among other benifits. i think it's about sixteen feet tall, 70 feet long with about half of that flat and the other half pretty overhangins. the climbing club switches the holds around every semester or so. within two to three years though, the rec centers gonna be remodeled, and should have pretty decent wall afterwards.

natural features, Capen park within a mile of campus with about a dozen good top ropes. plenty of areas with a high concentration of sport routes within two hours drive, but's mostly limestone, which is good, because can go to the same place year after year and never do the same climb twice!! there's some decent dolomite about three hours to the southeast.

saw this topic, had to register. seems everyone's forgotten the great University of New Hampshire. while we have no facility of our own, we've got the excellent Dover Indoor Climbing Gym 5-10 minutes away, Pawtuckaway maybe 20 minutes away, and Rumney about an hour or 2 north.

The University of Connecticut rock climbing club is working on building a wall or boulder cave somewhere on campus. I'm no longer up to date with exact plans, but can put you in contact with some people that are. PM me if you need more.

As for rock nearby there is some interesting stuff. There are a 3 major areas around the area, that include diverse routes for climbers of all levels.

Texas A&M University

We have an awesome rock wall! It is 3500 sq. ft. (about 55 ft high)of climbing surface with all sorts of overhangs and a slab also. We also have a section just for bouldering problems. Tons and tons of holds, and the best part is that they change the routes AT LEAST once a month. It costs $30 a semester for an unlimmited pass.
