also, if this interests you, check out my pics page to see my photos of John Bachar soloing in J-Tree back in April. I didn't realize it was him at the time-- only realized it after seeing a picture of him in a recent climbing mag. fortunately we were able to talk to him for about 10 minutes.... real nice guy!

There are two towns named Lisbon in Ohio, one near E. Liverpool and the other near Dayton. Where is the place you climb? Also, I'll be going to Pittsburgh soon. Is there anything near there?

Logtown Quarries in Lisbon is here: http://www.rockclimbing.com/...tArea.php?AreaID=654

There is another link off of that site with even more info.

Most of the climbing is far away really. McConnell's Mill is about 45 mins North. Everything else is atleast an hour and a half away. Often it is to the south near Connellsville, PA.

Check out the routes database. The crags have a city listed that they are close to.

It also depends on how long it takes you to get out of the city and the weight of your right foot. I can get to some spots like Breakneck in an hour or less. Most crags are a bit further. Coopers Rock is less than two hours, and the New and Seneca are around 4 hours.

Another great source of information is Tim's site. Several areas include route maps and photos. Please note that Krahlick is closed. It's been posted in local shops and here, but not on Tim's site.

We're having another climbing/work day at the Yough Gorge crag. Same time and place as last Saturday. Anyone else interested in joining in. Contact me.

Tim

Looks like I can't make it tomorrow. I'm leaving town earlier than I expected, and have a lot to do before the trip. I'm looking forward to getting back out there upon my return.

We'll see, but it's doubtful. The weather looks like garbage for the next couple of days, which is making my decision easier.

Hey, thanks for pointing out the weather. I was feeling pretty unlucky that I couldn't make it down to Seneca or NRG this weekend, but the weather is worse down there. If it rains on a shorter trip up here....then I haven't lost as much.

Bill, you had a friend that I met down at Seneca last time we were there. He had a dog with him. What did he do with the dog while he was climbing? I would like to hear other people's suggestions on what to do with a dog while I am climbing at Seneca too.

Also, what is everyone's plans for the 4th of July weekend? Anything cool?

I am still debating what to do. Lam is really pushing for something where we don't have to camp (Cumberland, MD where we can drop the dog off at my parents) or someplace like the NRG that we could bring a dog with us during the day.

http://www.rockclimbing.com/topic/89221

I suppose I won't be climbing there any time soon. There are plenty of other places to go.

On a different note, I finally put together my plans to go to Cumberland, MD. I see there is rain predicted for Monday and Tuesday, but I can deal with that on Monday or Tuesday.

What is everyone else doing?

You really lucked out with a family member close to the nrg. I am quite jealous.

I thought you were all gung-ho about trad......did that get dropped in lieu of the great sport available at the NRG? :)

there's a lot of trad at the New as well, and now with the Meadows... there's one wall at the meadows with several 5.5 - 5.6 trad climbs... i'm hoping to try it out this weekend. bubba city has several easy trad climbs too. junkyard is all trad.... but i'm still wearing diapers when it comes to trad.... literally and metaphorically! :)

what really sucks is this rain lately. i can't stand it anymore. of course there's no use in complaining, but it feels good to bitch sometimes.

i'd like to bring my cats to the New but i guess now Dan's dog would eat them.... :)

Well, I won't be at the New. So, you can bring them this time.

Every time people discuss bringing their cats or walking their cats I am reminded about the one time I actually saw someone try this.

The girl had a cat on the leash. The cat was freaking out. It would try to dart back and forth because it was in unfamiliar territory with lots of new things going on. It also happened to be in the middle of a field where no cover could be found. While darting, it would run into the leash, and it would fall down. It would get back up just looking bewildered. Then the owner would try to "walk" it around. The thing then realized the leash attached to its neck, and the cat fought with the collar, leash, and owner for a while. Something happened in the surroundings and the cat went back to darting. The whole time this owner was getting scratched and scared herself. She gave up "walking" the cat pretty darn quickly, but then she couldn't get the cat without being clawed. She got clawed dropping the cat and almost lost the leash when the cat went back to darting. Some brave soul eventually just grabbed the cat and withstood the scratches. The cat disappeared, but the girl was still around. I wonder what the inside of their car looked like.

Man, cats are great. What else deserves so much ridicule?

ps

right now the dog is about the size of a cat we expect it to be on the medium to small size

also, it is LOVING anything that moves. Whatever it is, it will run up to it and roll over on its back to play. This could very well freak a cat out, but I don't know.

....those silly cats...

I was wondering if anyone (or if you could recommend someone) around Johnstown, PA would like to help out my dad and I get started climbing. Right now we are just interested in doing some rappelling and topropeing. I would like to eventually do some sport or trad, but dads not to keen on that so we'll see. The main thing we need is guidance on building bomber anchors. We have made a few anchors that would make the rest of you cringe. So we could use some help. We have a very basic rack; rope, harnesses, biners (locking and non), atc, and a couple pieces of webbing. So if anyone would be interested in helping us not kill ourselves it would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Greg

Charly: I was looking at bringing 12 scouts to Mcc mill or Ohioplyle for some climbing...We had been to NRG, RRG and Libson and I wasnt sure if it was worth the drive. Is there any bolted climbs there or is it all TR? Are the routes grades? How high are the climbs? What type of rock is it, so I know to bring a rack or not.................Thanks Frank

jocaam, I am not aware of anyone near the johnstown area that posts in this thread. I don't even know of someone to put you in touch with. If you ever want to come out toward Pittsburgh, I would be willing to help out. Have you posted in the Eastern PA forum? There might be someone there that atleast has a contact in Johnstown.

fmd, The mill is about as tall as Lisbon. The rock is sandstone, and it is often more humid there. So, the rock takes a little longer to dry out. There are a couple of areas one could go, but for the main part is probably the best to take a group. Often it is crowded there though. So, plan on getting there early to reserve your spots. Everything is pretty much toprope there. My PERSONAL opinion is that it is NOT worth the drive. I find the rock dirty and wet. I also find the crowds to be worse then any other area around. The mill is the closest crag to me, and I see the mill as a last resort. Plenty of people disagree with me though. Bill (screen name charley) is one who does like the Mill. I hope you get other's opinions on it too.

i 2nd dan (microbarn) on the mill-- it is some pretty dirty climbing.

but if you're within a 45 minute drive (like Pgh), and it's been dry for a few days, then it's not bad for a TR workout.

it does have its own ethos and charm.... fun for groups new to climbing.

victor

ps. dan- my cats wouldn't last 5 minutes at the crag, but one time we did meet a really cool cat down at the NRG-- it was on a leash-- it acted like a puppy it was so cute.

I'm at the mill alot cause I live 35 min from it. I am there most weeks at least once during the week and sometimes on the weekend if I don't go somewhere else better. The mill is a strange place. Many climbs are dirty esp if it has rained lately. There can be days with no rain and the rock is wet from the condensation from the creek during the nite. Some weekends its afriggin zoo with groups and some times there is noone there. Some days there are noobs that I spend hours showing them enough that they don't hurt themselves and other times I watch ppl cruise the tens. I would not drive an hour and a half to climb there. If lisbon is closer go to lisbon. It can be a nice place for groups but some of the stuff is hard to get up on and it is a bit spread out. The easiest climb is slabby and needs to bedry. The next two you need to know how to rig. Thats my take on the mill.
I have had alot of good times there. There are places you can climb in the rain and places I climb most of the winter. There is a lot of bouldering too.

The Mills can be dirty, wet and crowded, but is also a place of great beauty, with a lot of stiff, demanding climbs.

I've had many great times there, and shall continue to enjoy the Mills once or twice a year.

However, it is a long drive, and generally not worth it.

I have to go to a wedding this weekend. :( Also be planning stuff for my own. Lam and I moved it up to Oct 14th of this year.

Last weekend we went to Cumberland, MD. I saw you had a first ascent there Bill. I am looking forward to going back. Still need my lead head worked out on easy stuff.
