I'm sure the OP would love to go out in the bush with a Mossberg .22 and a Tasco 3-9x scope.... Save us taxpayers a shit load of money, and it might work.

Dude, this is STILL your life on the line. $10-15 bucks at least gets you two locking biner's that will FUCKING WORK.

It's not a stupid question - it's your response to the answers that is bringing this ridicule.

Well, according to the Home Depot website, that particular quicklink costs $6.17 plus shipping. It has a max safe load of 1000 lbs, which is less than 4.5 kn.

1) This kind of gear is not even remotely safe for climbing use. To see how much force you can generate in a fall, see below. I realize that you are only top-roping, but you can still generate large amounts of force, many times your own body weight.
http://www.getbeta.com/fall_factor.asp

2) It's more expensive than many full strength climbing carabiners (which are rated to about 20 kn or so), so there's absolutely no reason to buy one instead of a real climbing biner.

3) It really sounds like you should be climbing with experienced climbers first before you jump into things by yourself. There are many aspects about climbing, even on top-rope, which are not apparent to the inexperienced, and which can lead to severe injury and death if not heeded to properly.

who said I was a good shot?

These biners were given to me by a friend. He heard I was into climbing and he had some sitting around and he gave them to me so I said thanks and took them. I didn't buy them. I can still use it to hold my chaulk bag or I could tie it to the end of the rope when I repel. Sly

Holding a chalk bag sounds like the only real kind of use you can get out of those links. As for the rappel situation, common practice is tie a big knot (figure 8 on a bight or something) at the end of the rappel instead, so the quicklink is really unnecessary.

In all seriousness, try to find an experienced partner.

Glad that's over with. Back to work.

Climbing with home depo gear is well, like......

It's kinda like you going to Afganistan wearing black and blaze orange deer hunting camo w/ a bolt action .22 over your shoulder.

Ya, kinda like that.

I didn't read through all of this because much of it was ignorant, so if this has already been said I apologize. That being said, since you are trying to rig some shit together, make sure you don't hook steel and aluminum together - whether they're made for climbing or not. Steel will cut through aluminum under a load.

Also, I understand that you're making an attempt at jokes or sarcasm in pretty much every thread you start. That's all fine and good, but if you're serious about climbing, please take the time to actually learn from someone that knows what they're doing. And if they're willing to do that, then give them the respect they deserve by paying attention and being serious. There's a time and a place for fuckin around. I'm only saying this because even the most experienced climber can make mistakes, no matter how great their gear is or how long they've been climbing or how many 5.14's they've sent. Take a moment to read the injuries and accidents section. A guy just rappeled off the end of his rope in Alaska and fell 10 stories. And he supposedly knew what he was doing. (My condolences to his family and friends) I hope that you can learn something from that tragic loss and many, many others. I'm not trying to be a dick, I just want you to understand that you can get seriously hurt. Maybe facing death in Iraq has warped your sense of fear. Fear keeps you safe. I want you to be safe.

If you are talking about the huge quicklinks that weigh a ton and cost more that climbing biners it is cheaper to buy climbing biners if you mean the keychain aluminum "Not for Climbing" Biners I fell 20 feet as a kid with my mini zipline. Just buy some freakin climbing biners. You keep talking about wanting to save money, taking short cuts gets you killed. Idiots who get killed on the rock runin it for everyone else so don't do it. Just find stuff on sale. Your next question will be can I use the 200 lb test rope since I am only 175 lbs. And buy the way stop making so many stupid posts. There is a thing called a search box and this thing called a climbing dictionary on the homepage.

Climbing 101:

In reply to:
Lesson #7: Great Ways to Injure or Kill Yourself

Step 1: Buy the cheapest carabiners available. Expensive 'biners tend to weigh more and, really, do you want to carry all that unnecessary weight on a BIG WALL CLIMB? Furthermore, don't even bother with the locking 'biners. The locks just add more weight.

Step 2: Climb away!

While you mean to be sarcastic, that is exactly what a big wall rack is composed of. When I have a full double rack on and 50 spare biners, the cheapest lightest thing I can get my hands on is what goes with me. A typical wall rack is between 40 and 100 biners and about 6 lockers.

No, FUCK YOU.

Respect Canada, you insolent redneck prick, you should know more than most that the top US Armed Forces Snipers train in Quebec.

You are a specialist by trade, and yet you think that it is a good idea to substitude construction hardware to replace specialty equipment. How would you like to go back to work with a sport radio, a pair of kids binoculars and a hunting bow because someone wanted to save a few bucks.

You seem to have a whole shitload to say, but so little to add.

PS. Don't take this as a hit to the Marines, It is you, not your emplyer I take issue with.

I've seen a couple of posts here in the beginners section and its clear your going to get outside and start climbing come hell or high water.

I enjoy learning things on my own by reading and getting out there and just doing it. Last week I killed my first spring turkey. I did it all without guides or a mentor. It took me a while, but I finally got my bird.

My experience with climbing is that it is not a sport to learn on your own and it takes some time to become competent. I just took the beggining climbing class from AZ Mountaineering Club for 160 bucks and it was definetely worth the money. Before I will set up my first top rope outside though I will take the anchors class. Take a class or find a mentor, but learning everything you need to know about climbing over the internet is a dangerous proposition. My instructor in the class was climbing serious stuff 2 years after her beginner class. Slow down and get some quaility instruction.

P.S. Use actual biners that are designed specifically for climbing.

I don't know of any snipers who train in canada. The Marine Scout/Sniper schools are on Camp Pendleton, Quantica, and Hawaii... and lasst time I checked we were among the best snipers in the world. What branch of sniper trains in quebec? Is it a high angle fire package??

I find it ironic that the person that made these comments is trying to start climbing on Home Depot snap links. If climbing is so expensive that a few biners is going to break the bank, it's time to find a new hobby. If you insist on using items from Home Depot instead of the real deal, it's really time to find a new hobby.

If another friend learns you're climbing and offers you several old clotheslines, let us know. Maybe you can braid three of them together and use it as a rope.
