I'm writing the report and organizing the picts and a piece of video.

Can canyone help my with the formula to calculate how deep the hole is?

it took a rock 5.4 seconds to reach the bottom

Yes, we always use a big not at the end of the rope in case this doesn't reach the bottom, thanks for the reminder, a friend of mine forgot to use it on a rappel on a bridge 4 months ago and fell on his back... he is ok now

Thanks bflank for the info. The hole is not a cave but i will write them. We are very interested on exploring this thing and any help will be apreciated.

Look forward to seeing pictures and reading your report.

If you ignore air resistance, the distance travelled by a falling object is

d = 4.9t^2

d is the distance in metres, t is the time in seconds. ^2 is "squared."

So if it took 5.4 seconds, the depth is 4.9*5.4*5.4 = 143 metres.

The velocity upon hitting the ground would be 9.8*5.4 = 53 m/s, or 190 km/h.

Air resistance will slow the rock, so the real velocity and depth will actually be a bit less. How much less? Depends on a lot of things, especially the particular rock you tossed.

Also, the speed of sound is about 340 m/s, so it will take about 0.4 s for the sound to reach you from the bottom, thus the real time for the rock to hit is between 5 and 5.4 seconds. Finally, there's your buddy's reaction time before he stops the stopwatch. You could compensate for these factors (ask if you want details) but since all of them lead you to overestimate the time the rock takes to fall as well as its speed, and thus overestimate the height, they provide you a conservative estimate. BUT, you'll want to be absolutely sure you're hearing the rock hit the bottom, and not just bouncing off a ledge halfway down.

Make sense?

Great exploration, I'm glad to read that you all did this safely and with respect for the locals, even if you didn't get to the bottom.

There are cenotes on the Yucatan peninsula, giant sink holes. I'm just making a guess without any scientific support, could this big hole be a dried up cenote?

Thanks!! it could be a dried cenote, we have no idea and as you can see, there are not many people with knowledge about it or at least interested (here in Guate).

And if it is a dried cenote, do you have any data about it? it is possible to find noncatalogued insects? plants?

I have to go right now but i will keep checking this forum

keep exploring!

hroldan, what a great sounding adventure! I just saw this thread, and couldn't stop reading until the end. Good luck getting down there; it sounds like an awesome place to explore!

I couldn't get the video tp play, for some reason. Did this happen to anyone else?

There are quite a few British, Mexican, and US cavers who venture down to all karst regions in both our hemispheres. Go check out http://www.purificacion.org/. Bev, Peter, and the rest of the gang no doubt would love to see your pictures. Their project area is in central Mexico, but many in the group have caved all over the world, including Madagascar. They can give you advice about gear as well. I've gone on a half dozen projects with them.

More importantly, Peter has quite an archive of caves in Central America and/or might know who has some information on Guatemala. Cavers are real sticklers about mapping and surveying every pit they come across.

fucck the owner and drill the wall at one spot for an anchor but use the colored bolts. just makesure you always rappel from the same spot where the bolts are.

Well, I know Im beating a dead horse here, but I just feel like I need to put in my 2 cents. Being originally from an area quite close to this person, I feel privlaged to have not come across them. If you get a reputation for creating access issues with the attitude you have, than not only is someone gonna beat the shit out of you; youre never gonna find a partner (a respctible partner) anywhere. Many people work very hard to preserve access to various climbing areas across the country. Its people like you who have the potential to throw literally years of hard work and cooperation right out the window. Keep that in mind when you decide to say "fuuck the owner".

WE MADE IT

the math is right... now we have measured the place and it matches what the numbers of a falling rock gave us.

We got to the bottom. Visit the link http://www.xplorandoguatemala.com/...mo/1052292214344.htm to read the story. Right now is in spanish... but soon will be in english. We will post the video when we have it ready.
