If the conquest of a great peak brings moments of exultation and bliss, which in the monotonous, materialistic existence of modern times nothing else can approach, it also presents great dangers. It is not the goal of grand alpinisme to face peril, but it is one of the tests one must undergo to deserve the joy of rising for an instant above the state of crawling grubs. On this proud and beautiful mountain we have lived hours of fraternal, warm and exalting nobility. Here for a few days we have ceased to be slaves and have really been men. It is hard to return to servitude. Lionel Terray

In reply to: Those where his famous last words before doing the last section of Everest....he quoted Frost! Actually, the Frost quote was made over the radio during the descent from the Everest summit by a member of the American team that did the first ascent of the West Ridge in 1963 when it became apparent that they would not make it back to camp. If you're going to educate us, at least get your facts straight. Brutus

"No dude, you bump to that one, you don't match. Sharma matched but Graham didn't, he bumped. Then you go to that, stab your foot here, throw for that... [into endless spray.]" Two v4 (?) climbers discussing the Mandala today at the Buttermilks I suppose that should go into the what not to do when you are a noob thread.

"The perils of climbing fascinated me because they released so much joy and delight in simple things, like the feel of the wind, the scent of rock warmed by the sun, the sudden relaxation of tension, or the hot tea in the cup... There is no escape from passion like climbing..." Wanda Rutkiewicz - the first woman to climb K2

"We are Homo sapiens, the tool users. We earn the name by developing tools to increase our leverage on the world around us, and with this increased technological leverage comes a growing sense of power. This position of advantage that protects us from wild nature we call civilization. Our security increases as we apply more leverage, but along with it we notice a growing isolation from the earth. We crowd into cities, which shut out the rhythms of the planet -- daybreak, high tide, wispy cirrus high overhead yelling storm tomorrow, moonrise, Orion going south for the winter. Perceptions dull and we come to accept a blunting of feeling in the shadow of security. Drunk with power, I find that I am out of my senses. I, tool man, long for the immediacy of contact to brighten my senses again, to bring me nearer the world once more; in my security I have forgotten how to dance" From Climbing Ice by Yvon Chouinard.

So, if you cannot understand that there is something in man which responds to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you won't see why we go. What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life. We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to live. That is what life means and what life is for. -- G. Mallory

Bill: "You are going to die" me: "but I was just......" Bill: "No, you are going to die" The guy who taught me to climb, in a very serious voice while staring me in the eye, when I hooked into a figure-eight wrong while getting ready to rappel. Very motivating (and memorable) teaching technique.

Sitting in emergency room , waiting to have wife's bloody leg stitched up, as it's flayed open with six inch gash, and lower leg covered in streaking blood, some 12 year old kid comes in. He sits down and sees the carnage, and his jaw drops. Kid: "What happened!?!?" Wife: 'Umm... rock climbing..." Kid: " I am NEVER going rock climbing."

In reply to: I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain. - Frank Herbert

from vertical limit - possibly the most accurate thing about climbing in the entire movie. Peter: Can you climb? Monique: Peter wants to know if I can climb! Skip: Worst I ever seen. Couldn't climb a ladder. Peter: You're that good, huh? Monique: Yes... But it was a very tall ladder.

Here's a few of my favorites...
In reply to: A relationship is like a tough mountain climb — if you are willing to persevere through the tough spots, you will come out stronger and feel more fulfilled as you continue to confront and overcome obstacles in your way. - Steve
In reply to: When men climb on a great mountain together, the rope between them is more than a mere physical aid to the ascent; it is a symbol of the spirit of the enterprise. It is a symbol of men banded together in a common effort of will and strength against their own true enemies: inertia, cowardice, greed, ignorance and all weaknesses of the spirit.
In reply to: To put yourself into a situation where a mistake cannot necessarily be recouped, where the life you lose may be your own, clears the head wonderfully. It puts domestic problems back into proportion and adds an element of seriousness to your drab, routine life. Perhaps this is one reason why climbing has become increasingly hard as society has become increasingly, disproportionately, coddling. — A. Alvarez
In reply to: But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he cannot learn, feel, change, grow or live. Chained by his servitude he is a slave who has forfeited all freedom. Only a person who risks is free. The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; and the realist adjusts the sails. - William Arthur Ward
In reply to: The pleasure of risk is in the control needed to ride it with assurance so that what appears dangerous to the outsider is, to the participant, simply a matter of intelligence, skill, intuition, coordination... in a word, experience. Climbing in particular, is a paradoxically intellectual pastime, but with this difference: you have to think with your body. Every move has to be worked out in terms of playing chess with your body. If I make a mistake the consequences are immediate, obvious, embarrassing, and possibly painful. For a brief period I am directly responsible for my actions. In that beautiful, silent, world of mountains, it seems to me worth a little risk. - A. Alvarez
In reply to: "I refuse to believe in a risk free society where the thrill of living is traded for the safety of existence."
In reply to: Lead me to the rock that is higher than I -Psalm 61:2
