Umass Ph.D. Candidate Seasonal Ranger at Crater Lake N.P. Part-time fire fighter/emt and substitute teacher in rural MA I broke 20k for the first time last year and managed 100+ days outside Just took a pay cut to work at the Gunks this year. You'd think I'd be good by climbing so often... "My pockets are empty but my heart is full, and I don't need money to give my life value. You can buy the land but you can't buy the sky...." TREE

Umpqua National Forest Botany........I chase weeds, do restoration work, etc. Pay is ok. But I probably spend 140 days/year (guess) outside. Climbing abounds. Problem. I'm laid off for 2 months or so in THE WINTER!! AAAAGGGGGHHHH! And the job really gets intense through the summer.... Of course, I'm a family man too.........so just busy....

Marketing Coordinator and Graphic Designer for a civil design firm. I also do free-lance graphic design and custom airbrush. It's a cushy job, it pays a lot and I go home smelling as nice as when I left, but I don't get out to climb much. I haven't figured out how to get the same salary and benefits just climbing all the time.

I'm an assistant in a business management firm in Santa Monica, CA. I pay the bills and manage the money of people who are too rich and lazy or just too rich and too dumb to pay their own bills and manage their own money. Boring as hell but I don't work weekends, the pay is good, and I have excellent benefits. I'm also still in school working towards my environmental science degree. Jason

Living the cube life, making sure that the machines keep running (IT Guy). Not bad considering that it leaves some time for climbing and I can even afford to take a few roadtrips in my gas guzzling pig of a 4X4. I figure if I use the ORV capabilities a few times a year in the desert southwest somewhere it makes it worth it, and I don't get stuck in a ditch 100 miles from the nearest gas station. :-) But I do like my job and I do climb at least 2 routes a year 10+ pitches over 500 miles away from my home so it all seems good to me. Come to think of it I would much rather go on the never ending road trip and live out of a van.

I'm a quality control laboratory technician for Halliburton. I miss my soul. But I do get 4 day breaks after every 5 days working. And the pay's good.

Lifestyle over money, baby, all the way! I work at a cool little resort in the middle of the Sierra's. 3 hours or more from a major city. Never went to college. Have always worked near or related to outdoors play. Have learned a ton of things over the years as well. Mostly useless, but what the hey. Don't have a ton of possesions, and have decided owning a home is way over rated and a lot of work. I sold me 16' travel trailer for that reason. I love sleeping in the back of my truck. And I even own a horse!

As a student I often am faced with the decision whether or not I can afford food or climbing gear. I mean, who really needs food anyways?

I sell rims and tires at a local shop while I put myself through college. It pays the bills and buys the chalk.

Working as a coach/junior program instructor/routesetter at Edgeworks in Tacoma, and ambassading (is that a word?) for Statik Mountain and Mad Rock. Though right now I'm off in Colorado for a few weeks to chill in Rifle, Telluride, etc before going back to work in Washington in July.

I'm half way through a geology degree. When I'm not at school I work part time at the local gym. I'm spending most of my summer (and the next few summers) in some remote place carrying around rock samples and other menial jobs for the real scientists. It seems like a pretty good deal. I can exploit the rocks underground so I can climb the ones above ground.

I work as a photographer for a local University out here in the valley of the sun. I'm also finishing up my degree. I try to go out and climb twice a week but it's getting too hot to move.

This must be one of those threads where only the first and last pages get read. I work for myself. Which has great flexibility, sometimes.
