No... i sent him 20 bucks and didn't hear from him for a while. I sent him several messages. You know, this has got to be one of the most amusing threads I have read in a LONG time! Somehow, we've managed to go from advising a Marine on which type of carabiner to purchase in lieu of the ones he purchased from Home Depot to insulting the Corps and the members of our armed forces! What happened?!

Now, having said that, this next little bit is addressing RICHARDVG03 only:
Sgt, I understand what you're experiencing when you see a lot of other members on this forum insulting you and your country. Sadly, however, you cannot expect anyone in here to give you the same respect you would demand from your subordinates in the Corps. In here, these members are not subject to the UCMJ and are not bound to respect neither you nor your rank.
Rather, the insults you face in here have to dealt with using one of the most important leadership traits your Drill Instructors taught you in boot camp: Tact. You cannot go around insulting and harassing other members throughout the forum; you will earn no respect this way. Remember, these people visited your thread because they wanted to help! There is no sense in alienating yourself against those that are trying to help you...
Now, to answer your original question, no. Do not use the carabiners your purchased from the Home Depot. Those biners were not made to withstand the momentary weight strain brought forth by rock climbing. Those WILL break. Ask yourself this: "I've gone through eighteen intense weeks of boot camp at either San Diego, California or Paris Island, South Carolina. The Marine Corps has invested over one million dollars training me. Is all of that worth sacrificing over five extra dollars on good-quality carabiners?"

To everyone else on this forum:
Lets try to be a little nicer to RICHARDVG03. For those of you residing in the United States of America, he has dedicated a significant amount of his time and energy protect your rights and liberties. Doesn't he deserve atleast SOME respect?
For ALL of you on this forum, the man many of you have been ridiculing and jeering at is simply a guy who is new to the world of rock climbing. That is why he posted in the "Beginner's Section" instead of another thread comprised prmarily of advanced level climbers! Cut him some slack; everyone is entitled to ask a few questions that we may believe to be stupid at atleast one point toward the beginning of his/her climbing career.

Well LT, you find it amusing that people insults your beloved Corps because one of your NCO's doesnt know how to conduct himself. And I dont think that the Corps. has yet reached the one million dollar amount with Richard quit yet. Perhaps when he is done with his PT (physical therepy) and surgeries from his injurires sustained. But NOT from a 10 week sniper training class in VA or HI if he had even attended the course.

Richard, did you go thorugh the Marines sniper school or just a indoc training school? Are you in a RSTA group or Force Recon? Did you go thorugh the US Army Ranger school? Did you go through Jump School? I am not a Marine, but I did train with a shit load of Marines in my different schools and ALL of the RSTA snipers were qualified in Airborne school, Ranger school and served under the RSTA groups. The reason that I ask is that I see a Richard V Gilbert from Texas that is a 0341 (motorman) that graduated from boot in 2003. Hence your sign on name? Is that you.

Respect yourself before others can respect you. You should know that as a NCO. Dont dishonor yourself or your Corps. Is this how you want people to think of our military men and women. If you want to troll and poke fun, fine, but do it without "bragging" your a Marine sniper and a member of the military.

Just my .02 cents.

WOW! haha looks like somebody has access to the database and is sharing classified information...hum... and if you'd look closer maybe you would check out my schools... and the sniper school I went to was on Camp Pendleton. i did however... take an indoc as well.. yes i did graduate... 2nd in my class and I took high stalker... there is a 7.62 mm hollow point around my neck... now...NOBODY in my plt has jump wings. We stopped calling it a STA (no R) about 5 years ago... so old timer... you MUST have been in during peace time...

oh ya... go fuck yourself...

Simple question turned pissing match!

Its more sad then funny. If this guy is using biners from hardware stores what rope is he using? Does he know the basic knots to use? What about anchor building? If he's TR'ing who's belaying him? So many questions are left unanswered.

Richard,

My suggestion is to start bouldering until you meet other climbers with more experience then you. Or go to a crag and befriend someone who is willing to show you the ropes. Or save your money and take a class.
There's no shame in not knowing how do do something as long as your willing to listen when its time to "listen"

Now for the $1 million question: Home Depot or real ones??

I have to agree LOL I thought it was funny myself. I hope everybody knows that this is a VERY VERY old thread that people just keep bumping up. I think the people who responded to this thread would be very happy to know that I now own several black diamond carabiners that I purchased from REI. :) I do however still have my home depot biners and I use them to clip my bike up.

I love these pics....especially the "look at me trying to be cool" pic # 2.

That being said, I've worked with marine snipers lots and thanks for the help, however...your not setting a great example (granted this is the web and who really cares) of the corps and snipers with your online persona. Just my humble opinion.

Gratz on the biners and stay safe climbing.
