I can't commit to the Red because I don't have a job. No job=no money=no gas=no Red if I can't find a job. So Chattanooga local areas are still my best bet. The signs at Lostwall/Rocktown actually say Alcohol in designated campsites only. Between climbing, biking and caving, I have spent 40+ nights on that Mtn and have never had a problem over alcohol. I was also at Sandrock on Sunday. There were six ATV's and a Jeep riding up and down the trails. Adds new meaning to Objective danger doesn't it?

The campground at Foster Falls usually closes in mid-october. Does anybody know exactly when? Is it closed already?

"For camping with beer, Sandrock would be a better choice" True you can get away with it, but sandrock is in a dry county. If the cops roll up they can take you back down the mountain if they want to. they probably won't though. I would also push for either lost wall or meeting at a central point in chatanooga and dispersing from there. Alshough i may not even be able to attend that is my .02 furryfrisbee, you mentioned that you were heading up to sunset on wed. This may not be a good idea. here is a quote from dennis curry, the park ranger for sunset. "A work crew of 5 stonemasons are working at the bottom of main wall. 25 tons of stuff is getting stacked at the bottom of the routes. The workers are instructed to insist all climbers depart the areas of work. This is going to be difficult but should be over in a few weeks. I will keep you appraised as the work develops. We will have a better handle on completion dates as we see how it goes." Thanks Dennis Now i know that this doesnt say DONT climb at sunset, but if they have asked us nicely to stay away for a few weeks it may be a good idea. stewart

Stewbabby, Thanks for the up-date on Sunset. I've been up there since they started, and know where the masons are doing the work. I plan on being in a different section, but if they have moved to where I'm planning on going, I'll just move further south on the wall. I would never get in the way of those trying to make things better for us. There are some easy routes further down I want to try also. About Sandrock, as many broken bottles and empties as I've picked up out there, you would never realize it's a dry county. I drink very little, so the beer issue only concerns me when people over-indulge and endanger others. [ This Message was edited by: furryfrisbee on 2002-10-28 09:15 ]

Ha, we cant decide on anything yet . I dun really know too much about rocktown, considering how no one has told me yet about the sport climbing options there. I would almost prefer Foster Falls due to the variety of sport climbs, but then there's the camping issue...So if there is *any* decent sport climbs at RT/LW thent hats fine with me. And it seems that the majority want to climb on T-day weekend (which happens to be my 23rd brithday so alcohol is a must!!) I dunno, but we're gonna need some closure on this soon before it gets too late.

Lost wall is really a trad area, but if I remember right there are a few bolted routes. If that is the place though you will want to jump on, even if it is on tr or to follow, some of the great cracks. Lots and lots of cracks. And rocktown has imho the souths 2nd best bouldering. only second to hp40.

Sorry about that. I ment to mention that Lostwall is mostly trad. There are a couple of good bolted routes in the front section though. Somalian Hunger is a fun clip up. Its supposed to be 5.10b, but id your over six feet tall I don't think that it would be that hard. Ethnic Cleanser is a good mid grade 5.11 clip up. I've always wanted to do it but I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Not alot in the way of Sport routes I know, but there is tons of unbolted face climbing between 5.6 and 5.12d and toprope access in mega easy for 99.99% of the routes. As far as bouldering at Rocktown goes, Ive been to Camp4, Bishop, Ibex, Horsetooth reservoir, Durango, HP40, Boone and I've lived at the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon and made trips down to Joes Valley every weekend for two months. I've been tons of other places just to check out the bouldering and I still think that Rocktown is in the top two or three bouldering areas in the country. I'd be happy to show you around. Well then I'd say Rocktown is the place to go. If people that come can climb trad, then I guess I'll just follow, considering I am clueless when it comes to trad. Or I will learn . Also if TR access is easy then I'll just do that, and boulder. Whatever it takes to hop on some real rock!!! So is it RT/LW for Thanksgiving weekend?

Are we agreed on Rocktown/Lost Wall? I hope so. It really is a good place to climb. As Biggernhell pointed out, alcohol isn't much of an issue as long as you keep things under control. There are about 6-8 sport routes at LostWall, most of them in the 5.10b - 5.11c range. Tons of bouldering at the top of the mountain. Trad is the most plentiful. I've got my rack, and I am willing to share as much as I can. I will try to get a friend to join us and bring his rack as well. Pick a date: Nov 15-17 Nov 22-24 Nov 29-Dec 01 Best, JRB

OK, so where are these places? (rocktown and lost wall, that is). What state are they in and what is the closest town? If I know that info, I will look on Mapquest and figure out how far it is from Indiana and whether it's reasonable to drive on a weekend.

They are both located in northwestern GA on top of Pigeon Mountain. La Fayette, GA is a couple miles away.

Tradguy: Rocktown/LostWall is near La Fayette, Georgia. (FYI: Down here, we pronounce it as two seperate words, unlike the town that has Purdue Univ.!) From Bloomington: Get yourself on I-65, and head south. Take 65 to Nashville, head east on I-24 to Chattanooga. Catch I-75 south, and exit at Hwy 136 (I think it is exit #320... LaFayette/Resaca.) Go west on 136. Continue until you reach Hwy 193. Go to downtown LaFayette, turn left on Main Street, turn right at the second stoplight, and go for about 2-2.5 miles. Look for "Uncle Jed's" gas station on the right, and turn left onto Chamberlain Road. 3 miles later, you will see the entry to Crockford-Pigeon Creek WMA. Drive time from Indy is about 6-6.5 hours, depending on how you drive. If this is confusing, PM me and I'll give you a better description. Best, JRB
