One question... What's the deal with this fest thing? I thought I understood, but now I'm confuzled. So there's this ice park, where water is pumped over the cliffs to make rad ice climbz, and aroun new year every year people go party and climb and banter. But am I right in assuming it's illegal to camp? If you rent a room (I'm guessing you haz to) you can cram 10 ppl in it or it's regulated or something? You gotta buy a pass to climbz? People can't just turn up?

People can't just turn up? That's several questions, actually. It is NOT illegal to camp, just inconvenient. It'd be winter nights in the San Juan Range, around 8000 feet elevation (approximately 2500 meters, for you metric folks.) Unless one had a four-season tent, a bag rated to -10F or warmer, and a tent mate to snuggle with, camping during the ice festival could be miserable. Hotel rooms are available, and it's not unreasonable to fit 4 or perhaps 5 into a room with two queen sized beds. It will be crowded, though, given all the clothing and gear that 4 people bring. No pass necessary, but an ice park membership is good karma, and will pay for itself with discounts around town. And yeah, you can just show up. Not the best time of the year to do so, given the 3,499 other people that will be doing the same thing. It is a cool social scene, though. See old friends, make new ones, drink beer, eat food, and climb a route or two.

In reply to: See old friends, make new ones, drink beer, eat food, and climb a route or two. ...and get naked at Orvis. Reno, how'd you forget that, it's one of the best parts! We're still nailing down our plans, but it looks like Chris and I will be driving out this year. We should be in Colorado (somewhere) in time for New Years Eve. Going to try to hit up some skiing early in the week. Does anyone have any recommendations for a place for novice? We've skied a handful of times, but just in Michigan - short, icy runs with no powder. Leaning towards getting a room at the Best Western, but may be able to be talked into going in on a house as long as it's going to be drama free. Cant wait to see you all again!
