That's cool. I was hoping you might hop on Zag at Bridge, or Four Sheets to the Wind at Junkyard.

It seems like Butchers is quite a popular place. And I can see why: the rock is really beautiful.

Did get on Zag - but late in the day and the sun was beating down on it - and was greasing off. So decided to downclimb and leave it for another day. Did Four Sheets the weekend before (yes, I have been to the New three weekends in a row Smile) - very fun, pumpy, but good pro.

I hope you saw this Bill:

http://www.rockclimbing.com/...t_climbing__734.html

I think it would be awesome if you were a guide for one of the local climbs. I think you could be a great representative of the community. It would be a blast to see you on TV as a follow up to your Tribune Review article.

Sounds like productive weekends for all, even with record temperatures.

RRG was amazing as always. Met up with one of Bill's friends, Marlene, and Beau and I had a blast with her for the weekend. Very fun girl and a great climber!

We got to practice some easy trad leads, including some multipitch. Beau's lead head was very strong for the weekend and he was happy with a 5.8 trad lead to end the trip.

We are thinking of trying out Seneca next weekend.

The gentleman to whom you referred is Jack Harris. Dr. Jack. And by the way, he is the coolest instructor at Malone College. In charge of the MBA program, but also teaches canoeing, spelunking, rock climbing. Yes he is about 55, 5'7". I am good friends with him. the class he had was a rock climbing class PE credit. Lisbon was their final exam. I made the mistake of taking him to the North Jersey Rock Gym several years back. He made me look absolutely clueless. Afterwards, he tells me he was at Seneca Rocks for the the prior week climbing. Good Guy, I am proud to call him friend.

Yes, he seemed to be SUPER friendly. I assumed someone knew him from around here. The climbing community isn't so big that a regular could go unknown. Cool

Thanks for making the connection.

Dan, I'm a rockclimber or should I say a rock climbing old man, not a mountaineer.
I got back from my trip to rumney, nh. last nite. I am cleaning up and starting to get ready to leave for colorado on sunday. I had a great time at rumney even though my cold traveled with me and I couln not climb the first day and tried two routes on the second day. Even on top rope I could only climb ten foot before being exhausted. The last two days I lead an easy route and followed a cpl others. I still wasn't 100% but at least got to climb. My two friends had a great time. Very tenative plans for a spring and fall trip to each @ rumney/nconway, rrg, north carolina. Maybe more trips to nc. so we can get to pilot, stone, moores, table rock, and looking glass.
Good to see you are getting out in this beautiful weather. The two months of october which include the last two weeks of sept. and the first two of nov. are the greatest times of the year to be out. ENJOY it folks.
I'll update you on my wife after we see the doc but she is doing much better. Thanks for the prayers and good vibes.

Please keep us updated on your wife. When I met her she was very nice, and I wish her the best.

A friend that runs in McConnell's Mill said the 'project' area is no longer marked as no climbing. Has anyone heard anything about this? Perhaps I will call the park to see if the sign just fell down.

I took Judy to the doc yesterday and she is doing much better. She just has to deal with the three small stomach incisions healing. She had to have a drain tube in for a day or two so she got an extra incision. She is doing pretty good but tires easy. I am leaving again on sunday for colorado. She said if she felt better she would go too. Plans are for a flatiron, eleven mile trad, gog, and red rock canyon. Should be a busy week.

Good to hear, I hope she is able to make it out with you. Have a great time and let us know how those areas are.

Anyone else gonna be at Seneca this weekend? We won't be getting there until Saturday evening for a morning of climbing on Sunday. Have plans Friday unfortunately but we wanted to get back to Seneca before end of season (and next weekend will be busy with the Chili cookoff).

Quiet thread, hope that means everyone was out pulling hard all weekend Cool.

Turns out Beau and I were definitely ready for Seneca, or at least we felt so. With recommendations from charley and markc we decided to do Le Gourmet. After the first 2 pitches we opted for Critter Crack over the third pitch of Le Gourmet and then summited for the first time.

Was an awesome time and thanks for helping me get the balls to do it Laugh. I think I was just putting the peak on a pedestal...

Juice & I met at High Rocks at ten today (Tuesday). What a gorgeous fall day. Not too cold, not too hot, just right. A goldilocks day, fer sher.

However, my skinny behind was thoroughly kicked. Ten Crack, Johnny Rotten, The Scoop, Mysticism, Sloth and finishing up on the giant knobs along the river.

I've never seen HR looking so beautiful. It was like a park. Then the rains came....as we were driving away. Perfect.

Great job!! Hope you all are having fun at the chili cookoff. I am in the library in co. sprngs. We just left red rock canyon open space and are going to pack up and head home in the morn. We did a flatiron climb and descent, one day at garden of the gods, and 2 or 3 days at red rock canyon. Been a great time and I,m tired.

I sustained a small retinal tear while running Saturday. Treated Sunday morning at AGH with the introduction of a gas bubble into the Vitreous, cryotherapy, and lying on my left side for two days. 90% chance of healing without the horrible surgery. So, I hope to be on the rock again in a week, if all goes well. Do not forsake me O my darlings!

Good luck with the eye MM. I hope all that stuff I don't understand helps. Sometimes when outdoors it's best to keep the eyes covered. Of course we can never protect ourselves from everything all the time.

Wearing sport goggles will protect the cornea, which is a fine idea. The retina, however, is at the back of the eye.

The retina is the layer of neurosensory tissue that lines the back, inside wall of the eye. If you imagine that your eye is like a camera, then the retina is the film. When rays of light enter the eye and are focused on the retina by the cornea and lens, the retina reacts. The light receptive nerve cells that comprise the retina generate a nerve impulse whenever they are exposed to light. The retina then sends these nerve impulses along the optic nerve to the brain which interprets them as a picture. It's rather like the film in the camera being developed so that pictures can be viewed. However, just like a picture cannot be developed if the camera has defective film, vision is not possible in an eye with a defective retina.

The back cavity of the inner eye is filled with clear jelly called vitreous. When the vitreous jelly undergoes the natural aging process it deteriorates and becomes liquid. As the eyeball moves, small pockets of liquid vitreous can move around as well inside the vitreous cavity. This movement causes the vitreous to pull on the retina, causing flashing (photopsia)

Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD)

Normally the jelly is only loosely adherent to the retina and easily peels away from the retina during vitreous degeneration
(syneresis). This event is called a posterior vitreous
detachment (PVD) and again is a normal event occurring in most people sometime between 50 and 70 years of age.

However, occasionally, the vitreous jelly is so adherent to the retina and pulls so hard on it that it creates a tear. If this tear is along a blood vessel of the retina this may cause bleeding into the vitreous
(called a vitreous hemorrhage) which could lead to a shower of floaters which cloud the vision. Acute retinal tears with or without flashes and floaters pose a risk because fluid can enter through the tear under
the retina and lift the retina off, causing a retinal detachment, much like damp wallpaper peeling from the wall. Since PVDs are usually the
initiating event of most retinal detachments, this is why PVDs are such a concern.

A retinal tear is considered so serious because the vitreous liquid may leak through the tear, and pool under the retina. Gradually, the build up of liquid separates the retina from the wall of the eye, a condition called a Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment ( a retinal detachment associated with a hole or break in the retina). Retinal Detachments are a separation of the retinal tissue from the inside wall of the eye. Similar to wallpaper coming loose from a wall, the retinal tissue may develop folds or come completely away from its proper position along the interior of the eye resulting in loss of vision.

My eye surgeon told me today I'm healing well and won't need the nasty surgery. So I'll be climbing again in a week, and shouldn't have another.

YEA

that was a pretty good summary of all the interlinking parts in the eye. Thanks for posting that. It sounds like one small problem could lead to many big ones.

One more thing:

A retinal detachment is an emergent condition. Without prompt, expert treatment, you will lose the sight in tht eye in a few days. A delay in treatment may leave one with a permanent partial loss of sight.

YUCK!

So, if after a fall or anything that snaps the neck, if you have any kind of a black curtain across your vision, get to AGH ASAP and see Dr. Van Stratton. He's the greatest.

According to weather.com, Saturday and Sunday are supposed to be awesome at the New. Anyone? Anyone? 55-60 and mostly sunny, perfect for sending! Perfect for working on that dream route! In short, perfect. You will also be helping out an addict in getting his fix - good karma all around....

Weather around Pittsburgh is supposed to be iffy - chance of showers the whole weekend. I know none of you would prefer to sit inside and hear the pitterpatter of rain drops on your roof. The New beckons....

I wish I could help your addiction but I'm unfortunately grounded this weekend (and I don't mean by my parents, as I'm 23...).

Perhaps you could try j_ung or dbrayack if you can't find anyone in this thread, they are both very friendly locals.

Exkursion is having their 20-50% off everything sale this weekend. I went with the wife. We didn't pick anything up, but we drooled over the things we want. I was in the mood for wings, and I asked their recommendation. They said to head on over to Rivertowne, and they gave directions. (http://www.myrivertowne.com/)

This place was great. They had a dozen FULL wings (both parts) for $10. They had an extensive menu other than the wings, and everything was priced a buck or two less than other restaurants around here. The food was good to average quality though. The best thing of all is that they had 13 microbrewed beers there. The few I tried were excellent. I really look forward to going back. I recommend all of you guys try them out when you are in the monroeville area. I was totally unaware that Pgh had another microbrewer.

So, in an effort to visit all the microbreweries in pittsburgh, do you guys have any microbreweries to add to this list? Which ones have you gone to? What is your favorite?

Church Brew Works
Hereford & Hops Steakhouse & Brewpub
John Harvard's
Penn Brewery
Rivertowne Pour House

I got this list from here: http://brewpubzone.com/ Hopefully I didn't miss anything.

My order of preference
Rivertowne
Penn Brewery
Church Brew works
John Harvard's

never been to Hereford & Hops
