This may well belong in Community (mod, feel free to move), but it is specifically related to climbers. I know a few climbers who do not drink alcohol at all, and I know quite a few that do not like beer, but most climbers that I know like nothing more than having a couple of brews after a good (or not so good for that matter) day's climbing. I also brew quite a lot of my own beer, and asked myself recently, "what would make a good 'climber's beer'?". The answer I have come up with so far is, there is probably no one beer style that fits to most climbers from all climbing styles. If I divide it up by climbers of a particular style though, I think it would come out something like this: Alpine - Something that puts hair on your chest, and then curles it for you, like a Russian Stout maybe. Ice - Heavy and warm, an irish stout or porter perhaps. Trad - English Ale, for true old school grit-stone trad climbers, maybe a heavy scottish ale!? Sport - Lager, most would probably be happy with the refreshing, but otherwise tasteless, curry lagers of asia, whereas Ozzies and northern Europeans would probably prefer the the more continental lager taste. Boulderers - Either watery tasteless s*** like Corona or Sol, or girly (I apologise to the true women out there) drinks like Zima.... Anyway, those are obviously my very subjective 2 cents, but if I were to brew a beer for climbers, what do you think it should be like :?:

As I first statrted reading this thread I thought about my favorite brew, New Castle, and what segment of climbing it corresponded to, and what do you know the OP was reading my mind. Certaintly a solid beer for trad climbing. Or watching trad climbing, or dreaming about trad climbing, ah trad climbing (insert homer simpson-dreaming-about-food noise here)...

Hey man, When you're scraping together every last penny for gas on that ultimate roadtrip you've always been dreaming of, there's no money left for such discriminating tastes. Besides, bottles are too fragile for the rough and tumble life of real climbers. There's something about climbing, that as long as the beer's cold enough, almost anything tastes like the nectar of the gods. I'll throw in my vote for tall boys of PBR or High Life or a beat-up and dented sixer of Tecate as the true flavor of the climbing life.

I resent the boulderers and/or girls cheap shot! I'm a girl and I don't shy away from any alcohol, but when it comes to beer I like mine dark as night, heavy as rock, smooth as jazz, bitter as life and sweet as love. Some of my favs are Salvator (brewed by Paulaner), Hevelius (Polish beer), and Kozlak (I think Czech). As for Zima and wuss beers, I'd rather drink water!

I agree with the fact that it is almost impossible to lug good beer with you. So for that reason i think that the climber's beer is the best beer one can get ones hands on, in the local area. For example: Smith Rock = Dechutes, Black Butte Porter. Leavenworth = What ever the seasonal beer is at Uncle Uli's. Little Si, North Bend, WA = Redhook's, Blackhook or go to the Stumbling Monk in Seattle. Joshua Tree = What ever Cross Roads has on tap or the tallest cheapest can you can get back to your campsite. Well you get the point it just depends on where your are climbing. But one should never sacrifice quality for quantity, that just results in shitty next day of climbing. My 2cents

In reply to: Besides, bottles are too fragile for the rough and tumble life of real climbers Bah thats why liquor and beer comes in plastic bottles now yes a cold one is much like the nectar of the gods after a hard days climbing but keep those sports drinks ready or dehydration will kick in, especially with the darker drinks. I always reserve the liquor for the night before i head home

I wouldn't say that they are the only beers worth drinking, but I will second Stone Brewwing Co. Very few beers in the world (and I think you named most of those that do) that come close to their Russian Imperial Stout. It is the perfect sitting with friends in front of the fire after a hard day of ice climbing beer.

The cheapest beer available in Yosemite Valley (varies between King Cobra and OE800, if I recall correctly) seems to be the best bet for the climbers' beer.

I'm a trad climber aspiring to be a mountaineer someday, but I'll second the Belgian Trappist Ales; world class brews even compared to most German beers. Strong, too; upwards of 15% alcohol in some of them. You gotta love living in a country like Germany whose oldest law is the Beer Purity Law of 1516  Edd

You can get 240z cans of "steel reserve" for just over a buck a can, and at 8.1% its a cheap buzz. Thats what I drink when the funds get low. The best beer on earth, (other than my homebrew), is Sierra Nevada Big foot ale. It is a barley wine that comes out in the spring for a limmited time, and is so yummy, you'll smile like the first time you saw boobies. BTW- starving big wall haulers can rejoyce!! Trader Joes sells a litre of blended scotch whiskey that is cheap, entirely drinkable, and will fill a entire nalgeen bottle. SWEEEEEET STUFFF for only $9.99 a bottle!!

'Girly' is like 'gay', are descriptive adjectives meaning 'weak', used to get a reaction but having little to do with the real thing. Hence my 'apology' in the OP. As far as boulderers are concerned...boulderers have no defense :P On a completely unrelated topic, I am glad to see people pointing out the climbing bum's 'cheap beer is good beer' opinion. I was going to mention it in my OP, but then I forgot.

Best beer on earth? No. I assume you haven't had a trappist westy 12 or rochefort 10. Bigfoot's hops aren't well balanced to its malt, and in that aspect it looses out bigtime to the trappists.

They would drink any type of beer, as long as it comes in a can they can then crush in their 'grip' and say fuck yeah, but deep down they wished it where a really bottle and they weren't really gym climbers.
