Buying a dog?

Might I make a suggestion?

If you want a dog, please check your local shelter. If you want a specific breed, there are breed-specific rescues like those I listed above.

Puppies, seniors, middle-aged dogs... There are millions out there, and they need homes. There's no need to breed.

I just picked up my third rescued dog -- a gorgeous, healthy, purebred Australian Cattle Dog. We couldn't be happier!

Where'd you rescue an ACD from, and how much was the rescue fee(s)? I love those dogs, that's definitely what I'm going to get when I finally do get a dog.

Also a +1 for rescuing.

And that's the truth. Unconditional, unwavering, unchanging love, loyalty, and friendship. Come shit, mud, blood, hell, or high water, a dog will stand by your side to the end.

We humans could learn something from that, I think.

We got her from an all-breed rescue near LA. We weren't looking for an ACD specifically, but I fell in love with her as soon as I saw her. Our last rescue was an ACD-Husky mix. She died last year around the age of 15 or 16.

The adoption fee was $150 (it's actually a tax deductible donation). She's an older dog, so the fee was lower than if she was a pup. The rescue fee for a young purebred can be several hundred dollars more.

I see that you're in Sacramento. I'm not familiar with these organizations, but here are a few links:

http://www.cattledog.com/rescue/norcal.html

http://www.netpets.org/...breeds/dogcatle.html

http://www.acdrescueinc.com/

You should also check your local shelters. Some have a system where you can be on a list to get called when a particular breed arrives.

Make sure you learn all you can about ACDs before you rescue one. They can be the most wonderful dog you've ever had, or the most destructive and difficult. It's depends on their personality to some degree. Mostly it depends on how you train and socialize them.

Also, they can get themselves into a lot of trouble if left alone all day. If you're gone much of the day, an older and mellower ACD would definitely be a better idea than a high-energy youngster.

Good luck with the rescue. You should find it very rewarding.

I should stop now. I ruining my reputation of being an uncaring prick.

Yeah I realize that they're a working breed, and although the AKC has only recently accepted the Australian Cattle Dog as a purebreed/whatever the hell the call them, they haven't been as "watered down" as older breeds have. The non-recognized version of them is Queensland Heelers, but I'm sure soon enough they'll drift apart both physically and mentally... aanyway.

I wont be getting a dog until I can devote a lot of time to one and be able to integrate it into my life as well as possible. Sucks that most dogs aren't that well behaved; it would be awesome if dogs were allowed at work and everywhere else their human goes. After all, aren't they supposed to be our companions?

A cattle dog husky mix? I wouldn't able to find the energy for a mix like that without the help of meth. Tongue My husky is middle aged and still doesn't know when to STFU. Good thing she's cute.

I recently rescued an aging lab mutt. He's cool. He's too old to have pride:

As someone who is not fond of crag dogs* yours is adorable and I wish you luck in training him and taking care of him.

* Most people who bring dogs to the crag treat them at best like brand named puffy jackets - cool items that signal your climberness and can be left lying around while you're hang-dogging your route. At worst, crag dogs are just dogs at the crag - pooping, barking, roaming - and the owner seems incredulous to the fact that others might not enjoy their dog's presence.

No I think they understand clearly that you may not like them. No different than not enjoying the presence of the person you are climbing with or even you.
Yeah some seem to not GaS but the majority that I have seen are well looked after and not barkers who strew poop everywhere.

The vast majority of crag dog owners I've met simply could not Give A Shit (GaS, for those wondering). I've said it before, but it bears repeating: I don't care how well trained you believe your dog to be, the only dog I trust not to attack me unprovoked is the one in a solid cage. And I love dogs. The best trained dog I've ever seen once got spooked and nearly broke my arm (thankfully, the leash broke). What exactly makes you believe that I'm going to give that much slack to a dog I've never met before?

My dog does not go to the crags anymore. Although she's well behaved. She is big, and she scares people to death. They see a great dane coming torward them and freeze up.

Relish in your puppy induced tail, once it's a dog you'll need to have a personality again.

I've spent a lot of time contemplating how to organize such a business. Any insight on how to do it without running afoul of the Human society?

Chilean business address?

in a lot of places, you can volunteer to walk dogs for the local humane society. cute puppy + "ask me how to adopt this dog" shirt = adorable with bonus volunteer cred.

and, YOU don't have to keep the dog, but you might help some get adopted. always good.
