But I dont know what equipment to buy. Can someone please help me with a list of the bare essentials and what their purpose is. I would like to go out and start climbing the face of a rock...like this weekend! Im a hands on and very quick learner, and I hope all the muscular endurance and strength training I've done for the past year will aid me... MAny thanks in advance!

welcome to RC.com, ya gonna die. Find a AMGA climbing guide near you and hire him to take you out and teach you how to climb safe. He can also help you in gear choices I'm sure. Or just find a local climbing gym and start there.

Not exactly the answer I was looking for...A list of equipment would be alot better... But I do appreciate your concern, however...Everything I've ever done has been self taught... Sure I could go and give someone the little bit of hard earned money that I have to show me...I'd rather read read and read some more and watch some videos and take a cautious approach on my own... The money I'd rather spend on the equipment to get me started ASAP. So I know about the harness, Rope(what kind), but what about the other stuff that will get me climbing.

Mr.S wrote: Not exactly the answer I was looking for...A list of equipment would be alot better... Well you got what ya paid for. So I'll say it again differently: you don't need a list, you need a partner or a mentor. After all, you are planning on having some one belay you right? Now whether you pay them or barter with them is up to you. Otherwise if you insist on spending money go buy a pair of snug, but comfortable pair of beginner shoes and climb a boulder.* * suddenly wondering if I've just been trolled...

THEN I DONT WANT IT! Here's the list of things you'll need if you want to go straight from knowing nothing to soloing fifth class rock: 1: Huge Cojones 2: Coffin 3: cemetery plot 4: up-to-date will Seriously, if you're rejecting the idea of climbing with a partner, you don't know enough about the sport to start. Watch some videos of climbers - you'll see that climbers have belayers, people to catch falls. When you're new, you will fall.

Don't listen to these haters. Self belaying is easy. All you need is a rope (any kind will do), a piece of webbing to tie into a swami belt, and a carabiner to put your clove hitch on. Oh, and make sure to tie back up knots. You can watch some videos on Youtube if you're having trouble, but you'll probably be able to figure it out as you go.

Said list can be easily found, on your own, with some reading.

Seriously don't waste our time, and certainly don't waste Search and Rescues time hauling your dead body out of the woods. Climbing is not something you just go and do all of a sudden, especially by yourself. Go bouldering if you want to be all by yourself and not kill yourself, injure sure but you will probably survive.

Mr.S wrote: Thanks for nothing, people on here are assholes that offer sarcastic comments to new people. Only helpful thing anyone has done or said is this sarcastic bitch of a moderator lena...with a link at the bottom of her post. Haha. Wow. Just, wow. So I'm curious -- your profile lists sky diving as an activity. Was that self taught, too? The closest thing a reasonably rational person can do to be self taught is to hit their local library, do a catalog search on "Rock Climbing" and start reading. Books like John Long's "How to Rock Climb", or "Freedom of the Hills" or "Rock Climbing: Mastering Basic Skills" by Craig Luebben. In the odd chance your library doesn't have any of these books, try Amazon. You can read, absorb, and master the skills... or, not. Its up to you. Climbing has a long history and tradition of experienced climbers teaching beginners. I would say the majority of climbers learn through books and mentors, and a minority hire a guide. The problem as a beginner is you don't know what you don't know, and therefore learning from a stranger puts you in a spot of trusting someones knowledge and experience and hoping for the best. If you do follow through on this, and do continue to participate in rc.com, you'll probably look back and realize you were a pretty big tool your first go around. Most people climb for years before solo climbing anything (whether with gear or without) and so you might also grab a book on how to get along with people. So far you've done the climbing equivalent of paddling your foam board into the lineup, dropped in (breaking all the rules of etiquette), eaten it big time, and then proceeded to call everyone else "assholes".

She was not being rude... Despite strength, the brain would be the greatest equipment out on a climb. She just don't want you to be the next recipient of the Darwin Awards. All I ask is that I don't want to see your mangled body at Erock or Reimer's Ranch, or even at Hueco Tanks. I know a handful of free soloists, but they didn't started out that way. They actually read books, climbed with mentors and guides, then one day after years of preparation, they were free soloists. Bouldering is just as fun less gear shoes, chalk, and a crash pad, or go old school, no crash pad. It, bouldering, is fairly a very social thing, but we already know you are a lone wolf. Please do not stain my Texas' rocks.

THEN I DONT WANT IT! You can't scale the rock on your own, you need a parnter, unless all you want to do is boulder. Rope soloing probably not being suitable for beginners. To boulder you actually need nothing! Just go climb a boulder in your sneakers. No partner, no equipment, no cost. If you like that then buy shoes (ca $100), chalk bag and chalk (ca $30) and crash pad (vaires, at least $150).

You can't find something as simple self belay instructions by yourself, yet you want to teach yourself how to climb roped solo. Here, click on this. It's plain to see that self reliance isn't one of your strengths. Your going to get a reality check that you can't cash.

Ok, so just to be sure: If you are indeed not a troll, but an idiot, think about one thing: What happens with a human body that falls onto the ground from high up? And if you figured that out, maybe another thing: Why do most people suggest to do as they have done, and what is considered the "proper way" to learn our "sport"? qwert

As the folks here have made clear, climbing alone as a beginner is so dangerous that nobody wants to say anything that could be construed as encouraging that approach. Take that seriously. All that being said, lots of places have safe access to bolt anchors where you can set up a top-rope and TR solo without it being too sketchy. You can easily search TR solo threads on here to see what people are using.
