Then I picked up a book thats been on my shelf for a lot of years, that I've been kicking around should I read or knot. Enola Gay. Def worth reading, amazing story about the flight crews trained to deliever the bomb. Also goes into the lives of a number a Japaness. Well researched and written. Finally I'm about 1/2 through a book on the battle for New Guine. A little dry, but intersting as it really is the kick off of the offensive in the Pacific. When I think about the 10 pages written on that war in my highschool history book and then about the expansive volumes that exist outside of it, it makes me wonder what else they glossed over and then my head starts to hurt a little. You think about our 4 year involvement in WW2, and what we accomplished. The number of theaters, fronts, battles, offensives, and defenses during the whole war. The sacrafices people made. Makes you dizzy. My parents were young kids during WW2. Actually my Dad got drafted right after the war. But when "Midway" came out in '77 we all went to see it. Made quite an impression on me as young Jr Higher. I read a number of books about the war back then. This summer I picked up a few more. Was it Walter Cronkite that called them the greatest generation? Impressive what was accomplished. Damn... My grandpa was 6 as of 1945. My grandfather was in WW2... He was one messed up guy. After he died we found a lot of his ww2 books where he had made notes in the margins... It helped us understand him just a little bit better. Both of mine were in WWII, too. One was injured by shrapnel during the invasion of Italy and the other was initially in the Coast Guard managing supply boats off the coast of Africa. When the war in Europe ended, the one in the CG returned home and, during the decommission / welcome home parade, every third person was asked to take one step forward. Upon doing so, my grandfather and the others who stepped forward were congratulated on joining the Marines. That grandfather went to the Pacific and was on the beach during the invasion of Guam (I think, not 100% positive. It was one of the more difficult battles, but not one of the more famous ones such as Guadalcanal was). Both died as alcoholics. One died drinking and the other was dry for 30 years, but still, they both had issues. My step-grandfather was in Korea. He also drank himself to death. What they did was amazing, but there was little glory in it all.
