I was wondering if I should wear socks in my rc shoes. If not , why?Because what I am afraid of are stinky shoes!

I personally just deal with the smell, but it's personal preference. I've heard that the socks slip, but never had a problem with that myself. I don't usually climb with them though, I like barefoot better. :)

Generally no, you should not wear socks. The socks will make the shoes slip more and feel less precise. They will however save your ankles from scars. If you insist on wearing socks, keep them thin.

As a beginning climber you'll soon find many things more worthy of fear than shoe smell.

I wore socks when I still rented gym shoes...because I was grossed out by the thought of all the other feet, and, well, its the only way they were snug enough.

I've worn socks once in my shoes since buying my own pair, and it was because it was VERY cold out. It hurt. There wasn't really room for the socks in my shoes, and my toes hated me for 2 days afterwards. So no, I don't recommend it. Thinner socks would have felt better, but you still won't be able to feel the rock nearly as well.

wearing socks can help if your shoes stretch out over a period of several years, and the inner lining gets so slick with crap that your feet swivel while edging... of course the locigal thing to do would be to retire them at that point and get new shoes.

There would be little benefit to wearing socks on new to relatively new shoes.

Socks in shoes create a nice feel but allow less friction between your feet, the shoe and the rock thus allowing you not to be fully able to feel the rock.

And for Smelly Feet? Air out your feet between each climb, worked for me and if your buddy's complain, tell them to smell there own shoes, it should make them think twice before speaking up again lol... :)

if you do decide to wear socks, i highly recommend bike socks, as they are very thin and won't slip as much

Eventually, your shoes are probably going to STINK no matter what you do. Enjoy the newness and non-stinkiness while you can.

I've worn shoes with and without socks. It doesn't make any difference to me as far as performance goes. The stench factor is much lower when you wear socks. [scenario] I couldn't send that route until I wore my shoes without socks. What a noticeable difference in performance![/scenario] Sounds silly to me.

I wear socks all the time.
I started without socks, and I just didn't like it.
I've never had any problems with feeling the rock, or my shoe slipping around my foot.
As for smell, my feet just stink normally, so my climbing shoes stink after wearing them. I just change them between climbs so they can air out a bit.

I do both. Here are the pro's and cons of socks as I have found:

Socks-pros
when it is really cold out, they make a huge difference
when you lace you shoe up really tight around the sock, they dont slip
if you are doing any walking in your shoes, they can be more comfy

cons-
if your shoes are really tight, the added pressure can hurt your feet
if they aren't really tight, they can slip
some people perceive a decreased ability to sense the rock with their feet

since I live in AK and climb rock here year-round, I find that the added warmth of a nice sock can be a real foot-saver and often sport the socks.

yeah i definately dont wear socks, it keeps me from feeling the rock as well, but if it really cold, or your on a long crack climb, it can help pad your feet. If you're doing stuff on real small foot holds, it really helps [me] to have super-sensitive feet, but some ppl dont notice that big of a difference. And as far as smelly feet, you dont notice in the middle of a climb [if you do, id consider that a serious medical problem.....] and thats the only time you'd really be around them...and just air them out whenever you're not climbing

I would stay away from wearing socks in your climbing shoes, the socks will stretch your shoes out more. You do lose some sensitivity. and yes as far as stinky shoes go, buy some shoe spray. the smell goes away, and as buckyllama said you will have more things to worry about than stinky shoes.

I think that all of the above posts have missed one essential aspect of this problem...

If you wear socks with climbing shoes, you are a NERD!

Love the stink. You get used to it. If not yours, your partners will soon get to you. And if it doesnt, then you havent been on an epic yet my friend.

I started out wearing socks all of the time with my climbing shoes. As my climbing progressed I bought tighter and tighter shoes. At this point I couldn't wear socks in them even if I wanted to. I wear shoes two sizes smaller than my street shoes.

Whether or not socks affect your climbing is dependent on the shoes. Whether or not it affects your image while climbing is obvious. Only gumbies wear socks when its warm. That said, if you get the right shoe, you can pull on thin socks when its cold and have no loss of ability. But white socks, climbing shoes, and shorts do not go together.

I agree with the reply that mentioned the other 'fear factors' in climbing outside the stench of your footwear. The only time I would ever recommend wearing socks is when you're climbing in your approach shoes because your in a long trad crack, or because it's WAY to cold to climb in anything else. Of course, if it's that cold, you should consider taking up ice climbing anyhow. :) Wearing socks keeps you farther away from the rock, reducing the control you'll fell on the features of the face. But hey, to each his own, and if you can pull that sketchy move more confidently because you've got your smartwools on your tootsies, more power to you.

Hmmm. So I'm a Gumby, a Nerd, a Geek, and an Old School Traddie since I wear socks when I climb. Thanks. I didn't realize that it wasn't "Cool" to wear socks in climbing shoes. How could I be so stupid. Holy friggin 90210, Batman.
