I went to the Santee boulder field yesterday to do some climbing and some hanging out with an old climbing friend. As wel walked in, someone asked us about the "For Sale" sign up the hill so we went and checked it out. Sure enough, on top of the hill just to the right of the boulders overlooking Mast Blvd was something along the lines of "For Sale 27 Acres Coldwell Banker" I always thought that the boulders were on private land, but what a sad possibility. Not that the Santee boulders are the best bouldering the world, but having learned to edge and smear granite there I have a certain amount of affection for the place. It really is the best bouldering in SD (that I've been to). Does anyone know anything about this? Asandh? Others?

I've bouldered there... It would be pretty lame if it was sold and ended up getting leveled for a freeway or something. Wow. what a world...

The only benefit I can see to a private party purchasing the plot would be to keep people such as yourself off of the land.

It does seem only logical to add the plot to its neighboring park. After all, it is currently a wonderful recreation area and developing the land would likely cost more than it's worth, simply because of the boulders strewn about that would have to be removed.

Yah I would buy it, but the $1.5 million I'd need is tied up in the stock market right now. Care to make a contribution.

The phone number I'm talking about is to the Realtor handling the deal so we can possibly do something Proactive like maybe opening a dialogue with the owner and possibly linking them up with the nearby park. We're not whining we're trying to deal with it. You're either part of the problem or part of the solution .... shutup or put up.

I was just out there (well like a month ago) and those damn rocks provided for some pretty good times. Glad they arn't actually being sold, but if the develop around them what impact will that have, not only on you guys but the mtb trails as well?

Thanks to Prop X being defeated, this property is in even more danger. Since Santee Boulders are technically in San Diego and NOT Santee (and, yes up for sale) they are not directly affected by prop X, but very near to it.

The property line ends near Medina drive (the first light after the boulders). There is an estimated 3000 homes going in from Medina Drive to well beyond Santee Lakes. With all those new homes, you're going to need schools, fire dept, and police stations. Not to even mention Supermarkets, restaurants, gas stations, etc... where are they going to go? Hmmm...you do the math. There is only SO much land out there. Not to mention, those hills burn every few years...they are going to need new roads to get in and out of that property.

It just doesn't look good for our well loved local spot. :(

I called my friend who lives a minute or two from the boulders. Hopefully he can give me the number today. If anyone else has a faster way to get the number, go for it!

Yeah, I saw that sign a couple of days ago, but also saw in an article that Mission Trails was buying some land in the area. I figured that was the land they were buying... I guess not.

Please keep us updated on what is going on with Santee Boulders. If there's anything I can do to help preserve it, let me know. I'd hate to see such a popular local bouldering area go to waste.

The Pardee development proposed for the area adjacent to the boulders is called Castlerock. Here's an article about it in the San Diego UT:

Santee is pissed that they may have to provide fire protection for a development that isn't even in their jurisdiction.

Anyway, when I left the employ of the City of San Diego, Pardee was looking at buying the boulders as mitigation for their adjacent development. They have to buy habitat to replace the habitat that they destroy. Pardee would then turn this land over to the City of San Diego and it would be managed as part of MTRP. That way Pardee doesn't have to pay property taxes on land they aren't using anyway.

This may have changed... it's always changing.

If you want to keep tabs on the Castlerock development, whoever is handling this can PM me and I can get you the number for the project manager who is assigned to that area. If I post their number, I am fearful that every rock climber in the world will start harassing them and I don't really need to anger my former co-workers. I'm sure you all understand.

This thing looks to have quieted down a bit but heres some info for y'all. It looks like Pardee already ownes the boulder group to the west side of the valley along with the parcels that front on Mast that we cross to get to the boulders. I couldnt get an aerial view overlay with parcel lines, but the 27 acres looks like it contains the boulders on the east side of the valley. This parcel is owned by a private party but since they are bordered on the west, south and east by Pardee I'd imagine that is going to be the buyer. And all this land is in the city of San Diego, not Santee if anyone was unsure about that.

I would guess the boulders will remain in some fashion or another. Access will probably become the next issue. But you know, land development is time consuming in CA and plans change like the breeze, so who knows how or when anything will change.

I may be wrong, but I can't imagine that the Santee Boulders area would be cost effective to develop. There is a plot of land near my bro's house in Poway that has changed hands a number of times, and each time the new owner dumps it at a low price when they find out how expensive the boulder eradication would be just to build one house. And the rock there isn't half as ubiquitous as in Santee. If anyone hears of future developments, please keep us posted.

This may be the case, but you're talking about a private owner. The plot of land that is up for sale (ie the boulders) will be demolished by (most likely) Pardee...they have some pretty deep pockets if you know what I mean. Dropping a few hundred thousand to remove the boulders will be nothing compared to how much they will get for the 50+ tract homes that will replace them.

I just recently went out to Santee boulders for the first time. I know they're not the best rocks and they get a bad rap because of their "poor quality," but I would hate to see this area covered up by yet another plot of carbon copied houses. Anyway if anyone knows what I can do or how to get involved in preserving these boulders please let me know. I would be very interested in giving my time to such a cause.
