Cotton does kill, unless you're dry and warm. No problema wearing Patagucci Capilene (I'll not wash it for while and wear over and over, still not stinky). Try washing your Capilene inside-out, warm water, letting it soak, etc. If that doesn't work, try laying off all the garlic and onions :D

Smart wool is a great way to go. Pre-shrunk, no itch, feels buttery smooth, and you don't smell like Anna Nicole Smith's bicycle seat. Whoever said that Patagucci doesn't stink has probably either got malfunctioning stench receptors, or constantly has poo on their upper lip and can't tell the difference. :( Look at it this way, if you are at the local crag, be a stud(studet) and go topless, be a bigger stud and have someone towel you off when you get to the bottom. Otherwise, go smartwool and fughetaboutit. But I guess if you can't afford smartwool, then go capeline and be a stinky dirt-bag climber. There's no shame in that! I guess your theme song would be "don't stand so close to me" eh?

YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME!!! Unless you are bouldering or cragging 500ft from your car you have to be a damn fool to use cotton for base layer. The last time I wore cotton climbing was a spur of the momment trip up to the glacier and I ended up soaked and freezing until I though that piece of crap into the moulain we had been climbing in. Cotton kills people because evaporation heat loss causes our bodies to vasoconstrict at the extremities and keep the warm blood in the core. You lose dexterity, and way too many calories by not taking care of yourself. Who gives a shit if you are stinky, my god I had a pair of shoes that smelled so bad they rode outside the car and away from any other gear, and I still wore them until I burst through the toes. Sweat stinks, if a ya ain't stinking ya ain't sweating, and if ya ain't sweating who cares what your wearing because you are crag-posing-goomba that's only good for keeping outdoor companies in business so those that need good climbing gear can buy it at a cmopetitive price.

I have some poly liner socks with the silver X-Static stink-proofing whatchymajig....it really seems to work! Smell of rotten foot death definitely reduced... That said -- REVEL in your hard-earned stench!! It takes some perspiring to really build it up...savor it for a bit!! Don't get me wrong, I DO believe in hygiene, but tend to think (we) American - types are WAY too hung up on eliminating every tiny vestige of human BO. People smell like people, and often perfume (cheap, applied with pressure washer) is way more irritating to the rhinal cavities than a little "funk"! However, when it comes to the overwhelming smell of unwashed BUTT, I recant the above...

try washing capilene/fleece when you first buy it, BEFORE YOU EVER WEAR IT. my partner's been known to get pretty stinky now and then (say, after a week in jtree without a shower), and he swears by it.

cotton sucks(the life out of you!) I find, even in the heat, I prefer synthetics. it helps wick the moisture off me and keeps me cool. Just about anytime I'm outdoors, I'm wearing synthetics or wool actually. wool is good too. yeah...

When I first got some capilene I fully expected it to stink overwhelming after a few hours. Now, over a year later, I've worn medium weight, light weight, and silk weight capilene regularly and even after a week of straight wear they've never started smelling. In fact I find that capilene smells far better after active wear than other garmets. I am completely addicted to this stuff and wear it on a near daily basis now. Capilene is pretty much the world's most perfect fabric imo. Maybe its just a body chemistry thing but my capilene smells good far longer than I would ever exect it to. Stuart

In reply to: YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME!!! Unless you are bouldering or cragging 500ft from your car you have to be a damn fool to use cotton for base layer. Like I said, as long as you are aware of the risks and take precautions, cotton won't kill. Most of the people saying cotton kills probably don't venture a mile from their car.
