When i first started climbing I used chalk all of the time. My bag and a ball came with my first harness. I assumed that it was part of being a climber. Since then, the only time I ever use chalk is when climbing in gyms. Even then I save it mostly for the slimiest, most used routes. It's really not that necessary. Not only that, but where I do most of my climbing (Taylor's Falls, MN) chalk has destroyed the natural beauty of the rock all over the park. In some places, so much chalk has been deposited on the holds of some boulder problems that the holds are far more difficult now than before they were chalked up. White stains look gross on rock.

I saw a t-shirt once that said "Chalk is for schoolteachers and little girls who play hopscotch." If you can't keep your hands dry, try wearing small wristbands.

The MN no chalk ethic is absurd to say the least....

i find when using chalk just to cover your hands with a light dusting only when they get sweaty and when approaching the crux of the climb is the best way and only time you should ever use it. i find chalk helps increase the friction between my fingers and the wall therefore enabling me to grab holds that without chalk i would of had no chance in using. the best way to use minimal chalk is to buy an eco ball. most rock gyms only allow the use of this type of chalk.
i believe chalk does ruin the natural beauty of the rock. if you must use chalk outside, which the majority do from time to time, use nature friendly brown colored chalk.

I only use chalk in the gym. the rest of the time, I just dry my hands on my shirt or whatever. that's the whole prpose of chalk right; to dry your hands out. also whenever I think about climbing, my hands get a shot of adrenaline and begin to sweat.

I chalk almost every climb and going into the crux. I am kinda a chalk hog. Although, I have really sweaty palms. My palms sweat in a cold shower. I wish i didn't it would be cheaper.
