Thanks to all who submitted names. There was some really great stuff. In addition to the winners we already announced, here are a couple of last minute adds. You can check them out in our new catalog and on our website in August.

total_nobb – Paradox. This name will be used for our new belay device.

Davidji – Fury. This name will be used for our new guide shoe.

Cmacblue42 – Addiction Chalk (we already posted this one, but you did make the final cut)

M3thOd – Mad Cap This name did not make the final cut, but was so great that we are going to make a hat just to use it. The product was actually named by the designer.

Each person will be sent the Mad Rock climbing shoes of their choice. We sent each of you a PM, so please check it and respond when you want to get hooked up with shoes.

Honorable Mention (Not used yet?, free stuff anyway)

1) trogdortheburninator1 (Rad Moc) Sweet
2) thrmaln (Crack Shoes), Love it, loose my job for using
3) climbingeagle (Extremist) Very nice, Alpine boot

Greetings All:

Mad Rock is looking for new product names. Something along the lines of a psychological disorder (some current models include "Fanatic" and "Maniac") or astrological, like the new harness line ("Saturn," "Venus"). Anything might work though-- it just needs to sound good; You can post your suggestions on this forum-- that way we can track who came up with what name first. Have fun.

If your name is used you will get a free Harness, Pair of Shoes or other product depending on what the name is used on.

In Answer to a few posts I saw, 1) Yes I am the sales Manager 2) Names and winners will be selected approx. June 15th 3) We have already seen 3-5 names we like 4) No this is not a joke, call the office if you doubt it. 5) "F-bomb", not a good name 6) The reason for the comp is after 20 hears in the outdoor industry the well has run dry, I am out of catchy names.

Thanks for all the help in advance.

Joe Garland

The Alto.

(Alto = Height when discussing medicine... for example, altophobia is the fear of heights.)

Not that Altophobia is a good name, but "Alto" might work for ya.

The Synapse!

(Synapse: the space between nerve cells through which nerve impulses are transmitted.)

Kind of like the shoes are the space between climber and rock through which movement is transmitted.

I spent $700 so my night companion Amy could go out to Colorado and take a "night sky" seminar. She told me it would enhance the carnal pleasures of our camping trips. Anyways, she gets back and all she knows is Ursa Major and Sagittarius. What a ripoff.

Anyways, in going through her course material, I came up with:

Draco (the Dragon) - good for bold climbers
Cygnus (the Swan) - good for graceful climbers
Cetus (the Whale) - good for fat climbers
Virgo (the Virgin) - probably not appropriate for many climbers

more harness stuff, Mars is OK god of war, but the moons are pretty cool. One is Deimos, which means panic, and was Mar's attendant. the other on Phobos, which means fear, Both of those could probably go for the shoes too i guess. Some of Jupiter's moons are Leda, who was Sparta's queen and Helen's mom. Saturn's moons, Atlas, and titan. That's all i got with celestial bodies. (ooo celest, not a bad one either)

Dude, that seminar wasn't about learning constellations, it was about 'enhancing the carnal pleasures of your camping trips.'

Did you notice a difference? I didn't even charge extra for showing her my big dipper or the Archer. :P

Joe,

Your "Fanatic" & "Maniac" go well with the "mad" in Mad Rock. Too bad "Paranoia" is already taken.

A few others in the "mad" theme:
Fury
Bipolar
Anger

And some that just sound good (to me anyway):
Crush
Highball

for the harness, i had the thought of the astrological concept of a rising sign, as that goes nicely with the notion of climbing - rising upward:

- (insert astrological sign here, e.g., scorpio) rising

If you're making new shoes, I think you should call them "the elvis" and make them outta blue suede.

For psych terms, "ego" was always one of my favorite.

Harness Names:

Quasar

Compact, extra galactic, objects at extreme distances, which are highly luminous. They are thought to be active galactic nuclei. The name is an acronym for quasi-stellar radio source. A quasar is very similar to a QSO (quasi-stellar object) but gives out radio waves also.

Aurora.

A glow in the Earth's ionosphere caused by the interaction between the Earth's magnetic field and charged particles from the Sun (The Solar Wind). It gives rise to the "Northern Lights", or Aurora Borealis, in the Northern Hemisphere, and the Aurora Australis in the Southern Hemisphere.

Aphelion.

The point in an orbit around the Sun at which an object is at its greatest distance from the Sun (Opposite of perihelion).

Shoe Names:

Synapses

Phobias

For Her : Inter-Planet-Janet harness
For Him: Stellar Stan Harness

for shoes: Arecibo, VLA( Very Large Array)
S.E.T.I., and Plan 9 From Outerspace!

And a couple of other orbital/trajectory based terms: apogee, perogee, escape velocity.

Here's a good one that covers both aspects:
guy's shoe: The Rasputin's
gal's shoe: Anastasia's

Hello Joe,

Here are a few of my ideas. Please understand I am very new to rock climbing (since February) so some of these names may already be currently taken or from products from the past and I am unaware. I read a good deal of the ideas on this thread and think that the name Synapse mentioned earlier by someone is a great name and you should seriously considder it. Anyway, here are my ideas with a few joking ones thrown in.

Good luck in your quest. Hey Quest is a good name too!

Harnesses or shoe suggestions

Ascension
Assent
Climax
Adrenaline
Big-O – Good name for carabineer

Crack Addict – Shoes for crack climbing
Crack Whore – Female specific shoes for crack climbing
Rock God
Rock Star

How about shoes named after animals that climb.

Gibbon
Lemur – maybe cool striped pattern to match Lemur’s tails
Chimp
Baboon – where the heel of the rubber bends up toward ankle make it look like a sunburned ass. Just kidding!
Koala – Female specific climbing shoe Grey and black
Stink Bug – there always seems to be a stink bug climbing effortlessly when I am pumped and stuck at the crux

Motivator
Cult
Freedom – Red white and blue theme
Spirit
Rushmore – Harness since it was carved with people on top ropes

Charitable shoe for women idea

Komen – How about an all Pink and White shoe that say a portion of the price (couple of bucks) goes towards the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. If the shoe was good, I think women would really like the unity of active female climbers involved with this charity. Maybe even throw in the pink rubber bracelet in the box too! My wife has pink ribbon stuff all over the house. Just an Idea!
http://www.komen.org/intradoc-cgi/idc_cgi_isapi.dll?IdcService=SS_GET_PAGE&nodeId=298

So What ya think Joe! Any idea when we will find out what you decide to go with?

Have a great weekend,

Marc Webster

The Golden Lotus (or for a womens version the Li Yu)
In the early 10th century, emperor Li Yu of the Southern Tang dynasty in China ordered one of his slave girls to bind her feet in silk ribbons and dance on a platform littered with golden lotus flowers. From that day on, foot binding was often associated with the term golden lotus.

Of course, I could go for Southern Tang,

soma
"In the Hindu culture, Soma is their moon god. The Hindus believed that Soma rode through the sky in a chariot drawn by white horses. Soma also represented a drink that only the gods could consume to make them live forever. Because the moon was thought to hold this drink, the Hindus believed that when the moon got smaller it was because the gods were drinking."

Do you guys seriously think that a company would market a shoe that has such strong sexual meanings... Necrophilia??? WTF. Also a shoe would never be named after one of the world most notorious serial killers. The company would generate such horrible PR that it would go out of business almost over night. You don’t see other clothing or sporting good store with advertisements saying (SALE DAHMER SHIRTS... FEEL THE CRAZIENESS. Or Jack the Ripper kitchen knife set…Cut like the pros) Im surprised on how little thought is going into some of these suggestions.

well I'm thinkin about Olympus (The place where all Gods rested).

Also for shoes how about Hermes (the messenger for the gods, and also known for his cunning and shrewdness).

How about the Titan (They are veen bigger than the Gods).

Zeus (The ruler of all the Greek Gods.)

How about Scalato (Italian for I climbed)

My favorite...Debello (Latin for conquer, to end a war...this could be an absolute great chance for advertising).!!!!

I'll take a crack at it..here are my choices:

Conversion
~An unconscious defense mechanism by which the anxiety that stems from intrapsychic conflict is converted and expressed in a symbolic somatic.

or

Axiom
~A self-evident and necessary truth, or a proposition whose truth is so evident as first sight that no reasoning or demonstration can make it plainer; a proposition which it is necessary to take for granted; as, "The whole is greater than a part;" "A thing can not, at the same time, be and not be."

Thanks for all the help in advance.

To appeal to this demographic, consider the.......

2) Grommet

3) n00b (may be a copyright issue here)

4) Wannabe

or

5) Poseur

Basically, we have all given out enough names to cover all of the shoes (and variations) that came after the Fire was introduced in the early 80's.

Prior to that, if you took all of the avant-guard shoe models, you could have named them Moe, Larry, and Curly... That would have covered 1950-1982+/-.

Neuroses-- the plural sounds cooler than the singular neurosis-- but, then again, if used for a pair of shoes, perhaps the plural is perfectly appropriate. Plus, by the posts on this board, it's pretty easy to note that most of us have more than one mental problem . . .

Shoes: saguaros (yes the cactus, STICKY! just like shoes should be)

harnesses: aphrodite (obviously more appropriate for a women's harness, and perhaps to similar to venus for them to want to use it, but hey, why not.)

either harness or shoes:

silvan: original meaning= of or pertaining to the woods; has since come to be associated with elves thanks to Tolkein and the rest of the fantasy genre after him. either meaning works pretty well for climbing gear. one is just outdoorsy, the other is a very well balanced (physical balance) highly dextrous and very in tune with nature humanoid. something most climbers should aspire to be in at least some regards.

I owned a pair of mad rocks, best shoes for the gym, cheap, good soft gym rubber, but outdoors they dont hold an edge and the rubber wears super quick, Id only use them indoors

that being said they should name them with numbers and letters and crap like that, like mercedes like C100, C200, Im tired of all these names that are supposed to evoke these images, its the worst in SUV's like the Ridgeline, or Tahoe. Just give them a simple name, how am I supposed to talk to someon about shoes, Did you get the Crazies, or the Frenzies or the Locos? Dude I want simple numbers with out going into some kind of psychosomatic shock while trying to purchase a pair of shoes.

That is unless they want to name it the TRonsite

Don’t you need the Mad Sock from Mad Rock?
It looks like a shoe, but fits like a sock!

Or if that’s not your cuppa tea, how about the

Mad-stone? Okay, don’t groan…

The Mad-tuff, for when the going gets rough…

The Mad-crag for when you need to brag

The Mad-lava, which may create a palaver

I could go on…

The Mad-send for when you need to pretend

The Mad-proj for those you need to dodge...

And I think a peachy name for a harness would be

“Don’t get yer knickers in a twist”

although maybe that’s a little too much of a mouthful…

so how about the

“Shut up and climb” harness?

Ooooooh, and if mad rock starts making beanies, they could have the "Mad Hatter" range...

"In that direction," the Mad Rock rep said, waving its right paw round, "lives a Hatter: and in that direction," waving the other paw, "lives a March Hare. Visit either you like: they're both mad." "But I don't want to go among mad people," the customer remarked. "Oh, you can't help that," said the Mad Rock rep: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad." "How do you know I'm mad?" said the customer. "You must be, said the rep, "or you wouldn't have come here."

how 'bout [brown]Petraphilic[/brown] petra= rock philic=attracted to, or [brown]Petraphillia[/brown] love of rock
someone already said Acrophillia = love of heights.. i was thinking Altophilic, or Atlaphilic, depending on guy or gal.. but thats spanish and latin.. maybe thats no bueno... Acro's cooler...
Acisculus = stone cutter. wait that doesnt have anything to do with the theme.. unless your cutting rock with your teeth.. that would definatly be a disorder... so maybe Dentacisculus...
seems like theres more negative connotations though.. so maybe
[olive]Terraphobic[/olive] .. fear of the ground.. gotta get off the ground.. up on the rock.. although thats technically ground too.. DOH...
ok.. um..... talcum powder.. YES!!

and YES, i did read all 11 bloody pages.. AARRRGG :deadhorse:

Ah, here's a good one.. how 'bout some mayan names from the Daykeepers of the mayan calender.. not the silly new-age version, im talkin the old school names, the real lords... like
Kaban; lord of mind, thought and evolution. or
Chikchan who governs instinct and natural...stuff... my favorite is
[indigo]Chuen; lord of creativity and enjoyment and all around sillyness[/indigo]. lets see.. who else would be good for climbing...
theres Imix - the first daylord.. the original, the source...
ooh, or Manik; accomplishment, potential... he even has a curled hand for a symbol ( i dont have a scanner, else i'd post their symbols too..)......(i'm bored, can't ye tell..?)
how 'bout ... aah.. [olive]poo[/olive], ok, im done....
oh, wait.. no, theres one more silly little idea.. how 'bout Ipsillateral ; meaning on the same side (anatomically speaking) or Contralateral ; opposite sides.. oh but dag nabbit.. thats not goin with the theme..
the Mad Rock Slightly Askew
or the Mad Rock Altsheimer ; for the aging climber
hmm.. Mad Rock SuperStickyfragilastistastic!
ill just stop typing now...*everyone nods in agreement* :boring:

I'd be inclined to use names from norse mythology. I mean honestly, what sounds cooler than the names of norse gods?

I'm not sure what I would use it for but I like the name Grungir.
Its the magic spear of Odin that never missed it mark.
I'm sure there are limitless cool names that could be used from norse mythology.

Oh boring, boring, boring… you people are all so very predictable

Jupiter, Orion, Moon, Air,….. snore….

I don’t want to fall asleep while perusing the harness and shoe collection at my local climbing store… I want something that will grab my attention in a vice-like grip and scream “BUY ME!!!”

Now, the question is, what would have that kind of an effect on me? Well…. I think that the most bloody brilliant name of all time is...

Feral Racooon

(but sorry madrock, that is my name and you can’t have it)

So, in lieu of that, I rather like

Feral sh*t-flinging howler monkey

and

Feral Poodle

I wait with baited breath for the “Feral-series” to appear at my local climbing store…
