Ward Smith saw his car...called a few people and the word spread really quickly. A bunch of us drove there, his car was gone, and Farley is now chopped as well.

ward called jeff squire, who then emailed jon lavalley...i was there with jon and a few others.
most of the anchors on the first and second tiers are gone. looks like he was working his way up farley and once the rain stopped he trucked out.

I find amusement with both camps. If you have the right to place a bolt, someone else has the right to remove it. I particularly enjoy the sanctimony of the bolters. "I feel so, so... VIO-LAAAT-ED".

I wish I could say everything that needs to be said here, but decorum prevents that.
Suffice it to say that Ken Nichols is a tool of major proportions, and has been a pimple on the ass of everyone in New England for all of my 28 years of climbing here. History trumps innuendo; I hope you realize this from someone who cares deeply.
Ken speaks for himself, in a self-flaggelating manner, and has the same potential to learn as a barnacle. Zip, zero, zilch. All he knows is to latch onto his ship's hull and hold on for dear life. Yes, this is me being sensitive.
I would not grace this or any public forum with my actual thoughts, as they would far surpass those that I have typed here.
Ken; be a man. Do your foul(i.e. chickenshit) deeds in broad daylight, and leave a message in writing. not when Farley is owned by the WMCC. The cliffs are property of the wmcc who then have the right to bolt, and no one else has the right legally to alter that rock unless they have approval from the owners.
and i find no amusement whatsoever with this.

bolts at morman hollow without any proof, maybe he thinks, if I'm going to be accused of it, might as well do it. Or, did you guys go over to CT and put some more bolts in his areas in retaliation for his so called chopping

The unfortunate part of this is that Ken will not acknowledge any of these posts, will be beligerant and deny any of this in person, and act like he has a God-given dictive for anything that he has done when faced with irrefutible facts. History supports this.

Again, Ken isn't chopping recreationally. His response is most unfortunate, but I can assure you he is chopping in retaliation for something he regards as a serious provocation in CT. That is not a defense of his actions, or a justification for them, merely a statement of my view of how he operates. It is quite unfortunate he does not communicate the problem before or after setting off on another retaliatory jihad.
As before, I'm still trying to unearth contact info for him - if anyone has it or can get it I'm still willing to talk with him...

I just had an idea other than urging someone to kick his ass. Someone who knows people at Rock&Ice and/or Climbing should urge them to do a little investigative journalism into the matter rather than the silly ass who flashed what things they normally publish. I think a little bit of history and light on the subject would be very interesting to read and we all know that light is the best disinfectent. I also think that drawing public attention to the matter would help to alleviate the problem, the problem being, someone chopping bolts.

what im going on is the group of us here in western mass, who are a pretty tight knit group. granted there are people here who i dont know that climb, but as far as the locals around here, no one has done anything. i do find the thought that someone did something to him quite possible...as it becomes a rather easy thing to justify over time. but given the HUGE effort he put in at farley today (some serious work to get up to the upper tiers to chop anchors and hangars), it seems possible that someone did indeed do something.

Haven't spoken with him in years and it's been even longer since I climbed with him, but I'm in frequent touch with people that know him well. Ken is actually pretty damned immutable - it is extremely unlikely, especially in light of these new incidents, that anything much has changed about Ken.
